Greetings!

Hello,

I have just discovered Dreamblade only 3 days ago, and I am obsessed with the game!!!!
I bought up nearly every pack from local game stores, and ordered the entire sets off of Ebay.

I am in love with the game, and after only a few times of playing.

I look forward to discussing strategy and stories with everyone.
I guess to start, what is your favorite aspect and why?

Hi there. First time poster

As I loathe Ebay, I was wondering if anyone here wants a mint in-bag Buzzkill Clown.

Yeah, yeah, he's pretty dumb. Thing is, my wife and I hate clowns. Like I can't even reconcile that my faux uncle (you know-- one of those old-school friends of your folks' that you call uncle without there being a blodd bond?) is a clown in real life.

Anyway, a buck seventy-five takes him off my hands. Seriously.

SLPjeff12 at yahoo.com

Peace, kids.

your stitched mod, spawned by baxar, brings you.....

....hello ppl,
this is a call to all players of mono-valor to come to the Edge tournament this Thursday at NG and do something about erik's mono-passion warband. The Madness/Fear stitched-without-marion warband that i am running works REALLY well...IF i win third-turn initiative and a decent amount of initiatives. last time we played, 2 of 3 games i failed to win initiative and in fact we had no spawn phase like 5 times. (bad for me, good for erik with his Heart Thief or whatever it's called). the last time, i wound up winning initiative practically every turn and just pounded his ass into the ground.
i tried to post this yesterday, more articulately, but i guess it didn't take. today, i am a bit scattered as underwriters are trying to eat my brain.
ttyl,
e

How the hell do you lose?!?

I was demoing Dreamblade for a friend of mine. He played choke_me_hard's army, and I just made a semi-random valor/madness mish-mash with an eye towards sub-optimal pieces.

Despite my efforts to try and lose... I still won. I made a lot of very poor tactical decisions, like over-extending myself, splitting up my forces, even marching large groups of people into his Fleshless Reaper, and I still ended up winning. I didn't want to do anything blatantly obvious, like running away or choosing not to attack when I had a clear advantage, because I didn't want it to seem patronizing, but I would have thought that as badly as I was playing he still should have won!

So does anyone have any tips on how I can throw a game of Dreamblade, especially when demoing it to new players, without it seeming like I'm just letting them win? The only other thing I can think of is spawning poorly (like, say, with 10 spawn points I might spawn a 7 instead of a 4 and a 6) and playing an army that's either all really small dudes, like runetagged brawler, or all really big dudes that I'll probably never get to spawn.

also, here is nath's post

stolen from nath_h when he didn't cross-post.

I got the train up on friday to Edinburgh. Was only 45 minutes late. Met Sarah and made our way back to hers. Fitted in a crash course in Dreamblade.

Saturday involved getting up late (that house doesn't do mornings), wandering around ediburgh, trying haggis(es) and the museum before going to the medieval feast. Food to good. Company was good (would have liked the chance to get up and mingle more), and managed to borrow the limelight to demonstrate my bad singing voice (with trusty old bawdy songs).

Went to Dreamblade tournament on sunday. Won 4, lost 2, came 7th. Given I hadn't had chance to playtest and fine tune by band, it was a fair result. Some one commented myself and Sarah seemed to be happiest players there. In better news, by spare figure trading I got the bits to play the band I really wanted to play at the next one.

Since we got away early (not having to do the final rounds) we went off into the City on a Ghost Walk. Was interesting (set in the graveyard that inspired Mary Shelley and JK Rowling).

I had a late-ish train back today, so wandered round edinburgh by myself. Did the National Gallery (finally saw the Midsummer Summer Night's Dream paintings Sarah told me about ages ago), a couple of the churches, the graveyard again (by daylight), the scottish parliament building (it looks as bad as they say). Discovered new muscles from all that walking in the process.

Thanks to Sarah (and friends) for looking after me.

also, Chance has set up a myspace community. i will post info.
hugs,
e

Good Morning People!
and thank you to my anglerbeasty. i love you too.
what follows is Chance Drzewski's account of the NJ $1K.

Hello all! I hope to see you this Thursday night for some Dreamblade fun! We had a slightly larger turn out last week which was great to see. Hopefully it will keep growing.

Last weeks winners were Ben and Ian!!! Yeah!!!

If any of you don't know Ben, Ian, Eric, and I all attended the Dreamblade 1K in Scotch Plains, N.J. this past Saturday. Ben came in 1st and I came in 2nd!!!
We beat out the distinguished competition who were all from New Jersey. Go New York!!!

Here is a little run down of the weekend if any of you are interested.

This past weekend I attended a Dreamblade 1K tournament in Scotch Plains, N.J. After play testing a warband with my buddies Ben and Ian the night before I was fairly comfortable with the abilities and combination of the figures. Ben and I only wound up getting 4 hours of sleep that night (due to playtesting, laughing, and craving the wave), but we still managed to drag ourselves out of bed in enough time to meet Ian and our other friend Eric in Queens to drive out to N.J. that day. Due to traffic and the fact that Scotch Plains happens to be the trickiest place to find (I know, I've gotten lost there once before) we managed to get there before the sign up for the tournament. We did joke that we would probably wind up single handedly bringing much needed press to this game when we finally crashed our vehicle and all died from Eric's speedy driving. Not his fault though due to our lateness (he actually was a very good driver).

After only minutes of our arrival most were in awe of the presence of my friend Ben Stoll. All you could hear throughout the comic shop among the 20 Dreamblade players was "That's Ben Stoll. He's the 3rd best Dreamblade player in the world!" Hilariously a young gentlemen by the name of Dan who plays there often sat down next to me and jokingly stated that if Ben was #3 then that meant I must be #1. Not very likely.

The tournament began a half an hour later and a good time was had by all. Every player was competitive yet still friendly and nice. I actually played someone who had the only real "themed" team there. It was refreshing and nice to see, but I still wound up beating them. Afterwards the player told me that even though I had beaten him pretty badly it wasn't his worst defeat. His worst was against a 7 year old little girl. After she beat him he told me she said out loud to her brother, "I thought you said this guy was good?".

After six rounds (games) it came down to a win percentage between my friend Ian and I moving on to the top 4 (the top 4 players all play for the money and large points). Since we both had the same records I wound up the fourth man in most likely due to that fact that I was paired up against a player that had a better record at the time and I beat them giving me a slightly better win percentage.

I was lucky enough to play a great player in the final 4 by the name of Tim who had beaten me hours before due to a lack of time. This time I was able to enact my revenge and I beat him due to there being no time limit and recognizing his play tactics. Ben who was also in the top 4 (he always is) wound up beating his opponent too. That meant that team New York beat team New Jersey to go on to play for the first and second places. Luckly for me I had many games to realize the potential of my team and I was able to put Ben on the hot seat which is not a very easy thing to do... he being the 3rd best player in the world and all and so far he's always come in first at every 1K he attends. In the end though due to poor rolling and missing my spawn point needs by one a few turns in a row Ben wound up winning and I took second.

The best part of the night was when we were in the car ready to drive home and out pops the owner with a little bag for Ben and I. We both recieved gold pins stating we were 1K top 4! Sweet!!! By the way, the store that held the tournament was called Little Shop Of Comics and it was by far one of the most professionally run tournaments I've ever been to along with the fact that the owners were very personable, nice, and generous. I would strongly suggest that if anyone is ever in or near Scotch Plains they check it out!

For now, I am putting together supplemental warbands for this week's Dreamblade tourney on Thursday. I would like ppl to be able to get involved. Playing Chance, Ian, Ben and the Ericks will be good for them. Nothing motivates yugioh players to spend extra money quite like getting pounded into the dirt.
....because i just said that.
please forgive Moderator moodiness, people have been making drama again.
hugs,
emily

It's good, try some today.
On to the ON Topic shit for the Community.
First off, I'd like to thank our moderatrix, MatronMalice, for all of the time she spent at NG this week, playing the Game.
One of my co-workers pointed out that many young men were lining up to "play with my wife", and how did I feel about that. I responded by saying that 1] she was beating most of them savagely about the Dreamscape. 2] they were lining up man and boy for this. 3] yes, it kind of did turn me on, and yeah it would even more if she was just punching them in the face.

Wow. I've really wandered here.
I MEANT to talk about the $1K that me and 'the guys' are going to in NJ tomorrow and the fact that WotC claims there are "No Secret Messages" on any DB minis on their website.
I guess the Set Symbols being part of one mini per set don't really count. For the record; Zombie Enforcer and Skinless, respectively.
I think I'll go have a nice glass of sangria now and post more on the 1k tomorrow, after I get the stuffing beat out of me at it.

hello ppl,
just a reminder that tonight's Edge Tournament at NG will feature 6 alt-painted purple Faceless Stalkers as prizes and will take place at 7pm tonight. I don't know what is going on at Goblin tonight, but hopefully they have been blessed with equally awesome prize support.
Good luck to Nath at the 1K this weekend in Cardiff (Cardiff? is that right? possibly Bristol, or something? or Brightham? help please, i can find Angel Islington but England on a large scale eludes me). He's using a tricolor warband again. go Nath!
we are all looking forward to the $1K in Jersey this weekend; Chance, Ian, Ben and Erik will be attending. hopefully we can get the kinks ironed out of Erik's warband by that time. Last night I purposefully gimped my Bloodcut warband by not planting the Heartsblood or spawning the Virtuous Maiden, just to see if i could beat my Hellbred warband without them. The answer is NO. I have been schooled.
back to faxes,
emily
Quote of the Day: "Wow, it's like looking at a collection of random words smashed together." - JC, regarding my description of last night's game against Drow Dave.

im in yor 2square bladin yor dudez

*takes deep breath*
OMMFG.
between the yelling ("HIT ME! HIT ME!"), the moaning and sighing ("YES! YES! YES!"), and the straight up muscle engagement, last night's Dreamblade tutorial at Neutral Ground had to be the most exhausting and satisfying round of gaming ever. in retrospect, perhaps my poker face needs a little work.....
i replaced something from my bloodcut army with a brighthammer avenger and my Night Queen in the Hellbred warband with a Voodoo Manipulator. now, both of them are combat monsters, though the bloodcut warband dominates the middle row within like 2 turns. husbeast made the mistake of making an end-run for the 4 square and my Hellbred warband smacked the SHIT out of him for it. in the end, i hit him for an obscene amount of dice for the win. The record for the night goes to Elaine, who rolled 27 dice. not damage, DICE. she also smote David into the ground and is now qualified to teach others. my Hellbred came back from the dead at one round to Cliff's Bloodcut's five, and barely eked out a victory by killing all his pieces. seriously, longest game i have ever played, and i wound up so attenuated i needed a rest break before i took on the next opponent.
i have been thinking about dreamblade way more than is healthy, and the fact that i am alone in the office today just makes it worse. i will be working on some permutations.
ttyl,
emily

After 9 Hours of Dreamblade, the Results Are In

Hello Everyone,
Having quit my second job, I have gone back to Marathon Dreamblade at Neutral Ground NYC. Last night, I ran a Bloodcut warband and an all-Fear warband; having dismantled my far-more-effective Passion/Fear Hellbred warband at the request of another player (he really likes the Fear), I can honestly say that, while Fear itself has remained dominant, Passion has come into it's own in a big way this set. My impressions:
1) Hellbred warbands are BROKEN. Axemorph demons, Ekkyon Wayfareres, Infernal Gothics, Hellshriekers, Manglers, oh my! Two cannibal pariahs remain a must, as well as a Heartsblood Temple, but if you choose you can run the highly-underestimated Citadel of Torture in case opponents refuse to give you extra spawn by offing your Pariahs. That "reroll" Curse ability is awesome, and if you plant your Citadel in the "2" square, you effectively prevent them automatically sucking 2 spawn points off of their Temple. Of course, you can also choose to run an Immortal's Resting Place, but i am getting ahead of myself.
2) Bloodcut Warbands are BROKEN. The Virtuous Maiden (you know, the translucent unicorn) is one of my new favorite pieces. That 1: Enrage is really something to look out for. With Steelborn Lions, Kitsunes, Naga Broodqueens, Hawk-Eyed Instigators, Thieves of Last Chances and Bladehounds, you can run right up and dominate the middle row. If you choose to run all Passion, you can plant an Immortal's resting place to keep your dicemonsters from getting disrupted all over the board.
3) Valor on its own is weak, and I am kind of annoyed by "gambit". Has this stopped me from loving the Angel of Sunrise? No.
4) MADNESS GOT THE SHAFT AGAIN! Or did it? THe new four-player rules make the Fleshworm Broodsire, the Chrysalis spinner, the Relentless eviscerator, the scissors, and any other regenerating piece totally worth it. A Madness/Fear Baxar-centric warband is the key to making your 3 opponents cry, and I have really become enamored with the Chaos Puppeteer. I would like to run two of those.
5) The ideas in my head for the Valor/Passion/Madness Location Warband of Total Sickness frighten even me. Let's just say they involve one Arch of Triumph or Pearlthorn Castle, one Immortal's Resting Place, one Heartsblood Temple, 2 Dreamstuff Entities, one Spellbound Scissors, Chaos Puppetteer, Hawk-Eyed Instigator, Scarab Warcharm, Brighthammer Avenger, Thief of Last Chances, Bladehound and five more pieces to be named later when I stop giggling maniacally and drooling all over my desk. Hey Nath, you want to try to tweak this one?
Today I have reassembled my Hellbred Warband and am bringing it AND the Bloodcut Warband to Neutral for some tutorial play. Odd, I never saw anyone use the Torture ability before I played with a Yugioh player. Anyone paying attention during yesterday's tutorial would have heard my yelling "I WANT YOU TO HURT ME! HIT ME! HIT ME HARD!" as I tried to convince my etudiante not to be so timid with the Fear Steamroller he had on the board (Citadel, Darkbringer, Pariahs, Concubine, Horrid Poltergeist if i remember correctly).
see you this afternoon,
Emily
Call me the Chaos Kid.

Reapers

Siadek just put up a really good article about passion of the reapers at wizards.com.
Would have been nice to get the deserved credit for the term "dumbell curve" and for rebuilding Ben's and my builds of chessmaster around it though =/

Its a really good article though and I suggest everyone read it as you will see a lot of this warband, even if baxar's obsoletes it, there are always a bunch of people behind the curve on these things.

Can I just say that I fucking hate the guy at my friendly local comic store? I went in to pick up this week's comics, and you know what the asshole had the nerve to do? Tell me that they had gotten in 6 boosters of the new expansion.

So what shoulda been about $20 worth of comics ended up over $100. Bastard... lol

I opened 3 packs, saving the other 3 for Becca (the fiancée I've mentioned many times in the past). It was crazy, one of my packs I kept pulling out absolutely massive figures. I got the torture chamber, which is huge, a troll or something (the 7/7/7 loner who can always make a deathblow), which is also huge, and that common unstoppable valor guy which is pretty large too.

Just got an email from the Tournament Organizer requesting that i show up for the Seattle 10k after all... as apparently, it's back on.

*baffled*

anyone... know... more about this? I don't follow the WotC boards at all... so i'm unaware of any announcement that may have occurred.

I bought my fiancée two packs last night, and myself one. I opened mine and right away, there is one base visible to me as soon as I crack the top. It's the base of my rare. It's the base of a Jack-in-the-Box. That's the last rare I got, and it's not a particularly useful one for me since I don't really want to play Madness. The better half was in bed when I got home, so I didn't get to see her open hers.

Fast forward about 12 hours... I'm eating lunch at school, get a text message. SHE GOT A WARCHARM! Bah! First the fleshless reaper, now the warcharm... I'm totally jealous of her luck.

She also has two of those Janus warpstrikers (all-seeing mage?), and is trying to put together a Janus warband. The beautiful, gorgeous, loving, sweet woman that she is, offers to trade me the charm for my two Jack in the boxes! And yes, she was fully aware of how valuable they are. :) I gave her a few other common and uncommon Janus pieces I had, too.

Oh, and then we played a game and she finally beat me with my new army. I was very impressed, she made a lot of excellent tactical decisions and trounced me. I'm so proud of her!

Hi all,

I've veen lurking on here for a little while and decided to finally introduce myself.

I'm Nath, a Larper and Dreambalde player from the UK. I've just come back from my first 1K (the second in the UK) which I won, playing a blue-green-red chessmaster variant.

One of the most remarkable things about the tournament was the lack of warcharms.
The top 4 players there were only playing 3 warcharms between the lot of them. A report on it (not by me) will go up on the wizards forum at some point.

I'm considering making the trip over to Gencon for the Dream Series next year.

Here's a question about strategy...

You've won initiative. You already have a couple units in each of the center scoring cells. There are no engagements, though, as all your opponents units are in their first row right after the spawn row. Your options are:

Shift forwards and attack, leaving you in the higher scoring cells but I'm told that's not a good place to be and I tend to agree with that.

Pass your turn with some minor shifting*, allowing your opponent to shift fowards and attack without any reprisal this turn.

Shift backwards, let your opponent take the center cells, but likely keep your guys alive for the next turn.

Debate with your opponent the meaning of "won initiative" since being put in this position is hardly a prize!

*Minor shifting being defined as moving units up to the center row which were behind it, and possibly moving units around in the center row to better reinforce

I've had this come up at least twice, and each time chose the second option. The third never really occurred to me until I asked this question just now, and the first has seemed like a bad idea.

EDIT: Just as an aside, there should be better terminology for the different rows... Assuming someone hasn't already come up with terms, may I suggest the following:

Spawn row
Staging row
Center row
Deep row
Opponent's spawn row

Your opponent would of course have staging row and deep row switched for him.

So using this terminology for the above question, you've got the center row uncontested, but your opponent has some forces on his staging row.
