    Welcome to San Francisco.
Well some people wait 3 years to feel their 1st San Francisco earthquake. But we just had our first one on the dot for our 1 month anniversary of moving here.
    Ha.
It was a 4.0 and very very short.
We were having dinner and it just shook side to side for just a second or so ( even less according to reports).
I was so ready to dive under the desk !

What a week, friends, what a week.

You know when you get to that point when everything is so out of control that none of it really matters anymore and you just kind of laugh ?
    Yeah, that's where I am.

    It just looks cool.

The new Google browser is absolutely amazing.

One of my favorite things about it is the grayed-out areas in the web address - Only the domain is actually black.  I have no idea how this actually benefits me, and I know I could say something like, "It's easier to tell if I'm actually logging into MySpace..." or something, but the truth is, I just think it looks cool.

    Dedication To Service Bullets...
As long as it's not that community organizing service. Helping people find jobs and get off drugs. How lame is that?

*I'll give Palin some credit. She can give a good speech. We shouldn't be surprised. She was a Miss Alaska runner-up (that's one step away from Miss America, baby) and a former sportscaster. She knows how to tell a home crowd what they want to hear.

*Palin looks a little like one of my recent ex's, which is a little weird.

*I felt a little bad for McCain last night. He's not a bad guy. He just had to sell his soul to get the nomination. The problem with the Republicans primogenital approach to nominating presidential candidates is that it makes good men wait until they're past their prime before they get their chance. See Bob Dole.

*Apparently my Ex was having a good laugh at my line judging adventures last week. Nice to see she's moved on and has grown up...

*I think it's funny how we're all so glued to our cell phones. Everyone walking around with their eyes fixed to a little 2X3 glowing screen.

*Obligatory Cryptic Omphaloskeptic Comment: It can be a lot of pressure trying to make a good impression.

*My Pirates are doing the long, slow fade at the end of the season. I've adopted the Tampa Bay Rays (not Devil-they'll send you a letter if you call them that) as my team to follow during the pennant race. It's fun to watch David beat the Goliaths.

*It's really nice outside right now.

*I'm going to relax and have a good time. It's not that big a deal.

Starting where you are sometimes involves...
    Focusing on the positive.
I want to start this morning with a gratitude list. I will update about my teeth/gums later but it will be an involved post and it's going to be a long healing process. For now I want to embrace what I do have. :)

*Jeremy's infinite love and support and his coming to the dentist with me.
*We have the ability to heal ourselves.
*We (I) have tools and means to heal and lots of trained people to help.
*I have lots of tools to be present and work with pain and wholeness.
*I have a great supportive community of friends, classmates and teachers.
    *I collaged this week.
*Our downstairs neighbors picked up packages.
    *I am a fast reader.
    *Financial support from loved ones.
*Fascinating articles to read for school.
*Package from loving naturopath back in Seattle involving sea coral calcium, which made my little boat girl so happy ( and probably my gums!)
*The vastness, quirkiness and location of our apartment.
*Short and sweet scooter rides to school.
*A school schedule that allows for free days to do homework and have a life.

update with tiny barking in background
Hi - my life right now:

Puppies, set-building, puppies, freelance writing gig, puppies, other freelance writing gig, set painting, puppies, guest lecturing, Petsmart, play revisions, puppy foster care, big freelance writing gig that's gone on for a year, pups, scary freelance writing project I'm not sure how I'll finish, and puppies. All must be done in 3 weeks. Except possibly the puppies.

No room at any shelters, and animal control can't guarantee they won't euthanize the pups, so we're fostering them indefinitely. I'll make them a web page soon and start pimpimg them through adoption agencies.

Just bought a crate of puppy pads. Must sleep now.

    Lizards and Edward Albee Plays
I just got home from a really great rehearsal for Seascape. It seems I am the Movement Specialist as well as the fight director. I'm also going to be working with two actors who were also in The Kentucky Cycle last year with this same company.

What this means is that I am teaching people to act like lizards. Or more accurately, to lay the foundation early in the rehearsal process for them to build on in their lizardness.

Building the physical vocabulary was so much fun. We watched footage of different species of lizards for the rhythms and style of their movement, and then I put them through a bunch of exercises to create the character style. From there (since the lizards are a couple) we worked on what essentially came down to modern dance pas de deux movements so that they could have a series of movements that could work as a pair in different situations. Some of that got fairly acrobatic.

I won't be back at that rehearsal for a couple weeks, by that time they'll have worked off of the foundation and come up with all kinds of interesting stuff. That's also when we're adding in the fights.

    Editorial Meeting.
Today we had an editorial meeting for Plain Spoke for the fall and winter issues.

It was lovely to see all of my favorite people again, and it makes me miss them that much more.

We have 30-35 poems, 4 fiction stories, 1 memoir piece, 2 interviews, and some other stuff planned for the issues.

I can't wait for them to come out.

    Yay.

school's back, and i've fallen in synch, pretty much.

falling into my same-old, same-old.  met a man in arivaca at the beginning of the summer with NMD.  i spent the weekend with him - i spent two whole nights in a row with him, that's probably a personal record.  definitely haven't spent that kind of time with anyone in...  years.  (except this summer with farmboy, and that was the kiss of death, eh?  indeed.)  i got too quiet and shy after the first day because, after a whole day, what is there left to say, besides your life story, and who swaps life stories on a first date?  still, i liked it, i liked riding on the back of his ATV with no helmet, i liked swimming naked down by the pond, i like this country boy.  country man, he's almost ten years older than me.  i even like the burn mark on my left leg - stupid stupid me, stood too close to the engine block of his scooter, left a blistering burn, just like that, instantly.

and now i'm freaking out because he hasn't called, hasn't emailed.  why?  jerk.  why oh why?  why am i freaking out?

(see, i'm right back in the swing of things.)

    Bulleted Update

    i. $$$ — There is a sacrifice that has to be made to do what I love, and most of the time I make that sacrifice without even thinking about it, because there is nothing else I would rather do. But every once in a while, I am reminded of the things I am giving up in order to pursue my art: long-reaching financial stability. I have been scraping by ever since I graduated from college, and by the time I get my hands on that MFA, I will be more than a hundred thousand dollars in debt. A few of my friends have recently landed lovely, cushy positions, some of which are even in their field of interest. And I promise, I am nothing but proud of and happy for them. But every once in a while, when they talk about the fun thing they’re planning to do or the shiny toy they recently bought, I look around my sad little room and think of what my life would be like if I’d chosen a more lucrative career path. I am an exceptionally bright girl and could have been a million other different things, and I could have done a good job. A great job, even, in some cases. I wouldn’t've loved it, necessarily, but I would have been good at it. A psychiatrist, maybe, or an advertising agent. I look at the condos they’re building around the corner from my building and I tilt my head back and peer up at the balconies that are attached to the penthouse suites and I think, maybe one day I’ll have that. But you don’t get into this business for the money. Well, I suppose some people do, but that has always seemed foolish to me. It’s too hard to be in it for the monetary payoff.

Which is why I have to marry for money.

    …I’m kidding.

I honestly don’t usually mind it all that much, being a little on the broke end of things. Usually I can find plenty of fun things to do for cheap or free, and every once in a while, I say “To hell with it!” and spend money I oughtn’t or money I don’t have, and I feel better, if not a little foolish. But I would really love to just… up and fly to Prague (which, incidentally, is the location I am most obsessed with at this time) but I can’t. So I don’t. That’s the end of it.

ii. Whirlwind of Academia — I had orientation last week, and I begin classes tomorrow. I really lucked out with this schedule: I’m in class Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, and I work all day Tuesdays and Wednesdays. (All right, so I saved myself a few hours on Friday Morning for some extra sleep; I have no doubt that I will need it.) I am full of excitement but, as yet, have nothing to report on the school front. Columbia, it can be said, is extremely warm and welcoming to its Artists.

iii. Psychomachia — will have a workshop! It has been moved forward into the second round of development with The Bridge Theater Company. Very exciting. Less exciting, however, is the fact that I haven’t even begun to think about re-writes.

The sum total of these musings basically — and I suppose this was mostly just a bulleted list of what’s been going on since the insanity of last week and through the long weekend — is to say that things are progressing nicely. My professional life is looking brighter than ever, which (since it is my passion) is the most important thing that can be said. My personal life is mediocre at best, and my internal life is dark and twisty and full of contradiction.

But shhh, we don’t talk of such things here.

iv. Politically speaking… fun fact! Did you know that Sarah Palin can consume 3 times her body weight in Krill? I was chatting over a mojito with a friend of mine the other day, and he shared with me this game he had been playing with a friend of his. They came up with all sorts of delightful “fun facts” about the republican VP. Did you know that only 10% of Sarah Palin is visible, while the other 90% remains submerged under water? Sarah Plain remains at a constant -4 degrees Celsius and has 100 words for “snow”.

    Long Labor Bullets...
It's Tuesday, the backside of a long weekend. It was a good weekend, with a healthy mix of good times, new people and a bit of rest. I don't mind coming back to work (as much) after one of those weekends.

*Stripped Away closed this weekend. We finished strong. The electrical storm forced an extra intermission into the middle of Act I on Friday night, but it didn't seem to impact the performances or the audience.

*After the show Friday I was hanging at the Round Bar with some of the new people I met and someone commented on a funny line in the show. I was able to sit there with pride, knowing I had written that particular line. I think that was my favorite moment of the entire thing.

*I was a favored smelled object Saturday night. I can't blame them. I do smell nice.

*Does anyone else feel like this Palin pick is turning into an episode of "Mama's Family"?

*She walked in and said Hi to me like she already knew me.

*I'm pleased that Hurricane Gustav wasn't as bad as feared. My real question is this: what do they do when they run out of names? Gustav suggests they're already at the bottom of the barrel (no offense to any Gustavs reading this-it's a lovely name). Do they go with roman numerals like the popes or Rocky movies? Will we have Katrina II someday?

*Apparently I do have a drinking problem. I spilled beer down my chest Saturday night and I just dribbled coffee. I'm blaming the cup this time.

*The Makeout Couple haven't been making out lately. I guess the passion is gone, which lends credence to the theory of my co-workers that it was a Summer Fling of the illicit variety. "Summer lovin, gave me a thrill..."

*The whole belt holster for cell phones look has got to go. What, no room in your pockets? Trying to show how important you are by displaying your technology on your hip? Dude, kindergartners have cell phones now. You look like a douchebag trying to play modern day cowboy.

*I missed catching a game at Cooper Stadium one last time. I have some good memories there from my childhood. Having said that, I'm not going to miss the place. It was in an awkward place in a bad part of town with a lovely cemetary view behind the left field wall. Huntington Park is right around the corner from where I work and parking will be easy for me. I'm looking forward to catching some games next year.

*Obligatory Cryptic Omphaloskeptic Comment: No I'm not.

*I have little interest in watching the Republican Convention this week, unless Palin does a Hot for Teacher number during her acceptance speech.

*I like September. I don't know if I've mentioned that before.

    What poetry should do.

Trying to define a good poem is like trying to talk about what a true Christian is. Once a definition begins to take shape, it looks more like an anti-definition. It’s comprised of what the thing actually is not, more than it is of what the thing is.

Most poets who give good, thoughtful advice about the idea of how to write good poetry hardly ever follow their own advice, and are, therefore, rendered moot by their own wishy-washiness.

I like to think that there is no authority, that this is the stuff of good late-night arguments. Why? Because objectivity does not exist. People judge poems. People judge each other.

Further, criticism based solely on opinion is worthless to me, because it doesn't tell me WHY:

    This is a good poem.
    This is a bad poem.
This is the best poem I have ever read in my entire life.
This is the worst poem I have ever read in my entire life.
My dog could write a better poem. You suck.

    Those statements say nothing.

So let’s not talk about whether something is a good poem. Or whether it’s a poem. Let’s assume that it is a poem, and then let’s talk about craftsmanship. That should be interesting. Now we’re getting somewhere.

One of my favorite poems is Li-Young Li’s “The Cleaving.”

The first time I read it, I was fascinated. It is full of rich, sensual detail, but it’s also a wonderwerks smorgasbord of connections, familial imaginings, neighborhoods, and self-definition. There are some big ideas in those little ideas.

This is a poem that inspires me to want to write something as meaningful.

The first time I read this poem, I was also overwhelmed. I was overwhelmed by the grotesquery in it. The way he describes the fish “gutless twitching on the scales” is amazing. His command of the English language is startling. This is the kind of poem that makes me wish I wrote it. This is the kind of poem that lets me walk in someone else’s shoes for a while, get a feel for them. He allows his reader to get comfortable in his skin. I want to be that writer. I want to write that poem.

This is the meat of the poem, and also the place where it’s the most sensual and most abstract at the same time:

“The deaths at the sinks, those bodies prepared
    for eating, I would eat,
    and the standing deaths
at the counters, in the aisles,
the walking deaths in the streets,
    the death-far-from-home, the death-
    in-a-strange-land, these Chinatown
    deaths, these American deaths.
I would devour this race to sing it,
this race that according to Emerson
managed to preserve to a hair
for three or four thousand years
the ugliest features in the world.
I would eat these features, eat
the last three or four thousand years, every hair.
And I would eat Emerson, his transparent soul, his
    soporific transcendence.
    I would eat this head,
    glazed in pepper-speckled sauce,
the cooked eyes opaque in their sockets.
I bring it to my mouth and--
the way I was taught, the way I've watched
    others before me do--
with a stiff tongue lick out
    the cheek-meat and the meat
over the armored jaw, my eating,
    its sensual, salient nowness,
    punctuating the void
from which such hunger springs and to which it proceeds”

He talks about death and America and being Chinese and racism and history and transcendentalism and tradition.

But he does it in a way that I don’t feel like it’s heavy-handed.

And that’s all I want in a poem, really. I want to immerse myself in it and wander around in it for a while. I want to revel in the way its words feel rolling off my tongue.

I want to feel like it knows me, and I want to know it. For a little while.
