[The camera on Alize's laptop flicks on to show her and Hakuba in the music room of his house - Alize sitting on the couch (her chair is off to one side), shuffling through music sheets, and Hakuba standing as he quietly practices his violin. Irene is playing with a toy on the couch and 'chu'ing to herself. None of them take any notice of the filming, which means the comm is probably playing with video posts again.
There's a second violin lying almost invitingly on the table between them, but Alize is rather pointedly ignoring it. Hakuba glances at her and plays a spirited stanza, but she ignores that too. Unperturbed, he continues with the song: a pretty challenging piece meant for a quartet, or at least for two violins, but he's doing a good job of it. It seems he's been practicing.
After a moment or two, Alize pipes up without looking up from her papers:]
You need to put more feeling into it.
[Hakuba just stops and lowers the violin. Alize blinks and glances up at him, and he quirks an eyebrow before retorting] I don't think you're in any position to critique my music.
[That makes the singer glare.] I still know more about it than you.
Oh really? [The eyebrow goes higher] Skill deteriorates if you stop using it, you know. And you haven't played anything for almost half a year.
[Alize flinches, but keep glaring.] That doesn't change what I know!!
Of course it does. A person's skill set is almost always directly correlated to their knowledge base. [He replaces the violin under his chin.] At least I've played lately. You've been falling out of practice, sister. I bet you couldn't even keep up with me any more.
[Now she's angry enough to slam a palm down on the couch cushions] I could so!
In tune? [Hakuba's very good at the 'condescendingly dubious' look]
I can too!! [She snatches up the extra violin and levels the bow at her adopted brother with a scowl, growling out] Play.
[Hakuba smirks and does so, starting with a tauntingly casual up-and-down opening verse that slides over the strings. Alize just listens intently, and as soon as his music breaks, she plucks her strings in a sharp retort, her posture upright and intense. He returns it.
And they duel.
Alize is taking this as a personal challenge, and Hakuba's expression is serious with concentration as he does his best to keep up with her, but the detective can't help a little smile. He's just gotten his sister to pick up an instrument for the first time since February.]
