"That right there is a straight, sweetheart. Let's see if you like lace--"
"Hold your horses, Messer. I do believe that this is a full house. Let's see if you wear boxers or briefs."
Danny stood up and stripped off his pants. He wasn't sure whether he should be regretting this right now. It had been his idea to play strip poker, but he hadn't thought Angell would be any good. A shirt, tank top and pants later, and he was thinking that maybe he'd underestimated her.
Angell took a drink of her beer as she gave Danny the once-over.
"Like what you see, Angell?"
She smiled.
"I see that I'm winning. Who doesn't like winning?"
Danny sat back down and gathered the cards to shuffle them. If he played his cards right, maybe this could turn out in his favor after all.
Angell gestured for Danny to hand her the cards. He watched as she shuffled.
"I didn't know you played," he said finally, enjoying the way her hands moved skillfully over the deck.
"I've got four older brothers, Messer, of course I play," she said, starting to deal the cards. "Maybe I should be offended that you suggested that we play strip poker because you thought it would be a quick way to get me out of my clothes."
Danny grinned.
"Yeah, well, I'll take it as a good sign that you agreed to play knowing that it was a quick way to get me out of my clothes."
"Blackmail, Messer, that's all. One more hand and I get to see the goods. Then your ass belongs to me for the foreseeable future."
"I like the way that sounds," Danny said, leaning forward and licking his lips suggestively.
"Of course you do. Too bad your family jewels aren't quite as irresistible as you seem to think they are."
Danny pretended to be hurt.
"Now see, that's not fair. You haven't even seen them yet."
Angell picked up her cards. "Give it time."
Danny picked up his own cards, smiling again. He looked over at Angell, but her expression didn't give anything away. Danny suspected that her small smile was just a sign of a woman who knew she had the upper hand, so to speak.
He didn't mind.
Danny got rid of one card and drew a new one from the deck, unable to keep from grinning when he saw the hand he ended up with: a flush. This might turn things in his favor a little bit.
"You look pleased with yourself," Angell said, arranging her own cards and raising an eyebrow. "Let's see what you have."
"Ladies first," Danny said, feeling confident about this one.
Angell laid her cards out on the table.
"I've got a straight this time, Messer. Still feeling lucky?"
Danny fanned his own cards out with a small flourish.
"Why yes, as a matter of fact, I do. A flush beats a straight, doesn't it?"
Angell looked shy for a moment, and Danny resisted the urge to say that her cheeks had a "flush" of their own. She pulled her shirt off over her head, tossing it to the side and giving Danny an "I dare you to say something" look.
Danny couldn't help licking his bottom lip.
"Not bad, Angell, not bad at all."
"Try not to touch yourself, Messer. I know it's been a while since you've seen a pair of these in person."
Danny laughed.
"Maybe, maybe not."
"Just shuffle the cards," she said, pushing them all across the table toward him.
Danny had to admit that he liked seeing her off-balance like this.
He also liked seeing her partially undressed. A man could get used to those curves--
"Hello, earth to Messer. Stop staring at my chest and deal the cards."
Danny smirked, shuffling the cards quickly. Angell turned up her bottle of beer and drained the last of it by the time Danny had dealt the cards.
"I don't plan to lose two in a row," she informed him as she picked up her hand and started to arrange the cards.
"Eager to see me naked, aren't you?" Danny said, dropping two cards and getting two more. This hand wasn't shaping up to be very promising.
"Maybe, maybe not," she replied, her expression not telling him whether she was being sarcastic or serious.
"Ladies first," Danny said, wanting to see how bad it was before he admitted that he only had a pair of threes.
Angell fanned her cards out.
"Two pair."
Danny laid down his own cards with a small grimace. The moment of truth had arrived, and he was suddenly wondering if she really was just interested in having blackmail material.
"Make this interesting, Messer," Angell said, sitting back with a grin on her face and waiting for Danny to lose the boxers.
Danny stood up, turning around before he pulled his boxers down slowly.
"Nice ass. Are you getting shy on me now?"
Danny glanced over his shoulder.
"I wouldn't want to shock you."
Angell smiled. "This isn't my first rodeo, cowboy."
Danny turned around, hoping that he wasn't blushing. Angell's gaze was frank and appraising.
"Not bad, Messer."
Danny raised an eyebrow. Now what? Angell stood up, reaching for her shirt.
"Wait, where are you going?" Danny asked, moving closer.
"I've got to work early tomorrow. This little game has been fun, but it's a long ride back to my place. I'll see you soon enough--although perhaps not so much of you."
"You're just leaving?"
Angell grinned, pulling her shirt back on and reaching for her keys.
"Your ass is mine, Messer, remember? I'll make sure you remember that."
She gave him a kiss on the cheek before disappearing through the door. Danny couldn't help but smirk. He went over to the window and opened it, waiting for Angell to appear on the street several floors below.
"Is that a promise?" He called, leaning over the ledge.
Angell laughed as she hailed a cab.
"It is," she called back. "I'd say it's a win-win situation."
Danny got a glimpse of her smile before she ducked into the cab.
A win-win situation? He wasn't sure what she had in mind, but he thought that sounded about right.
