About to head off for Brighton - doing a bit of maths and so on, I figure that quarter to twelve is about the latest I can head off and still make my train. The checklist has grown, though - it's almost distressing:

- Costume
- Boots because I am not wearing those fuckers today, no way, not until I have to
- Gladstone bag
- Spare herbs for physreps
- Daz's chocolate memory cards (which I don't think came out quite right but they've been in the fridge all evening so ... we live in hope and if not, hey, green chocolate)
- Little sack o' tradeable crap for Floating Market
- Camera

I was going to bring my laptop but in the end ... too much junk. Thanks, but no. I'm already going to clank when I move. Yech. So instead it'll have to be the notebook that perennially lives in my handbag for the drabble that's been flitting around my head for the last week and I've been too tired to set to 'paper', as it were. So ... yeah, anyway, things to do and places to go. Less nervous this time, though partly that's because I've just woken up after going to bed at near daylight and I'm not last of the great morning people.

Okay, this leave me ten minutes to pack my shit and get out the door. Hasta luego, people - see you when I get back (not before 2am my time, from the look - I'm such a nutbar...)

Fantasy Moguls Update [Jul. 26th, 2008|10:19 am]

angusabranson
I have one Studio's season coming to a close and another Studio entering into Week 4 of the next season in Fantasy Moguls - the online Fantasy Film Studio game which is played in the same way as Fantasy Football, but dealing with what's on at the Silver Screen!

With one week to go The Phantom Syndicate is currently 2nd out of 28 Studios in it's League - plus I have one more film to open this weekend which will hopefully keep my earnings and ratings up for the close of the season. The last film on my slate is the new X-Files film so I have my fingers crossed for a raesonable showing. I'm 9.5 points behind the leader (Murphworld) but they had a weeks head start on me as I joined the season late - but saying that, we're both beating a number of studios which started the season two weeks before that so are doing pretty well to have caught up and clinging on to the top two spots!

My second studio in a Legaue that only started a few weeks ago is the imaginatively titles Cubicle 7 Entertainment - can't think where I got that name from :p. Anyway, coming into Week 4 I'm currently flying high in 1st place with points of spare and 3 of my 6 seasons films now released (Hellboy 2, Dark Knight and Space Chimps). My other three releases this Season are Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Babylon AD and Bangkok Dangerous - so we'll see where I end up come the end of September - although this week I scored the top marks in every catagory so fingers crossed for a similiar showing in this League compared to the one now ending!

Anyway, I need coffee. Catch you guys and gals in LJ-land later and hope you all have a great weekend!

Loan Wolves 17 - 20 Gardner & Theobald [Jul. 26th, 2008|09:23 am]

Wednesday's game should have been the second against G&T, a team from a large firm of surveyors. However, the first was rescheduled and will be the last of our season. Which didn't help us, as G&T have become a stronger side as the season has gone on. Scores were low and close until they pulled away from us, and even though we made seven in the last inning we couldn't pull enough runs back to save the game.
The result didn't help the promotion chase, but we're still in contention with three games left. But we really don't believe in making things easy for ourselves.

Aaron's Art "Flood Sale" [Jul. 25th, 2008|10:37 pm]

angusabranson
[info]aaronace, a friend and great artist who's done work for Cubicle 7 in the past and is currently working on a future Victoriana cover for us, suffered from a flash flood a few days ago which has wrecked the ground floor of his place. He's having a 'Flood Sale' to raise some extra cash so if you've ever fancied a signed piece of his art now is the time to get your orders in! He's only charging $15 per piece with free postage in the US.

I've already put in an order for, er, a few bits :p

Anyway, his words:

-----
$15 for signed 9"x12" prints, with free shipping in the US. You can browse through this journal ([info]aaronace) or my flickr gallery. If you see something you like, drop me a line at aaronace [at] gmail [dot] com, and I'll let you know if it's available.

Here's a few samples of his work...

Paging ferret fanciers [Jul. 25th, 2008|10:26 pm]

A friend has just adopted a couple of ferrets from an animal rescue, and while he seems to be reasonably well clued up on them (and has his first bitemarks), I was wondering if anyone had any hints and tips to pass on, or sites to recomment. They're both females, not very old, that's about all I know.

Going through my archives I found a bunch of photos I took in February just before the U600 died. It was incredibly pretty that day and I've posted the good photos here, they're some of the last photos I took with that camera phone before it died and I kind of miss it.

The Walrus and The Carpenter [Jul. 25th, 2008|07:18 pm]

pond823
The Walrus and The Carpenter
Lewis Carroll
(from Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, 1872)

The sun was shining on the sea,
Shining with all his might:
He did his very best to make
The billows smooth and bright--
And this was odd, because it was
The middle of the night.

The moon was shining sulkily,
Because she thought the sun
Had got no business to be there
After the day was done--
"It's very rude of him," she said,
"To come and spoil the fun!"

The sea was wet as wet could be,
The sands were dry as dry.
You could not see a cloud, because
No cloud was in the sky:
No birds were flying overhead--
There were no birds to fly.

The Walrus and the Carpenter
Were walking close at hand;
They wept like anything to see
Such quantities of sand:
"If this were only cleared away,"
They said, "it would be grand!"

"If seven maids with seven mops
Swept it for half a year.
Do you suppose," the Walrus said,
"That they could get it clear?"
"I doubt it," said the Carpenter,
And shed a bitter tear.

"O Oysters, come and walk with us!"
The Walrus did beseech.
"A pleasant walk, a pleasant talk,
Along the briny beach:
We cannot do with more than four,
To give a hand to each."

The eldest Oyster looked at him,
But never a word he said:
The eldest Oyster winked his eye,
And shook his heavy head--
Meaning to say he did not choose
To leave the oyster-bed.

But four young Oysters hurried up,
All eager for the treat:
Their coats were brushed, their faces washed,
Their shoes were clean and neat--
And this was odd, because, you know,
They hadn't any feet.

Four other Oysters followed them,
And yet another four;
And thick and fast they came at last,
And more, and more, and more--
All hopping through the frothy waves,
And scrambling to the shore.

The Walrus and the Carpenter
Walked on a mile or so,
And then they rested on a rock
Conveniently low:
And all the little Oysters stood
And waited in a row.

"The time has come," the Walrus said,
"To talk of many things:
Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax--
Of cabbages--and kings--
And why the sea is boiling hot--
And whether pigs have wings."

"But wait a bit," the Oysters cried,
"Before we have our chat;
For some of us are out of breath,
And all of us are fat!"
"No hurry!" said the Carpenter.
They thanked him much for that.

"A loaf of bread," the Walrus said,
"Is what we chiefly need:
Pepper and vinegar besides
Are very good indeed--
Now if you're ready, Oysters dear,
We can begin to feed."

"But not on us!" the Oysters cried,
Turning a little blue.
"After such kindness, that would be
A dismal thing to do!"
"The night is fine," the Walrus said.
"Do you admire the view?

"It was so kind of you to come!
And you are very nice!"
The Carpenter said nothing but
"Cut us another slice:
I wish you were not quite so deaf--
I've had to ask you twice!"

"It seems a shame," the Walrus said,
"To play them such a trick,
After we've brought them out so far,
And made them trot so quick!"
The Carpenter said nothing but
"The butter's spread too thick!"

"I weep for you," the Walrus said:
"I deeply sympathize."
With sobs and tears he sorted out
Those of the largest size,
Holding his pocket-handkerchief
Before his streaming eyes.

"O Oysters," said the Carpenter,
"You've had a pleasant run!
Shall we be trotting home again?'
But answer came there none--
And this was scarcely odd, because
They'd eaten every one.

So this is how I would look like as a Trollball player.
This is from the special Continuum edition of 'Trollball: This is NOT a Fair Game!', illustrated by Rolland Barthelemy. The committee and the Guests of Honour have all been rendered as player counters in the game and all look so fantastic as Rolland has captured our characters very well.

Today I got a few things done

Fiddled around with the design of the cutout boat I mentioned yesterday, and fixed the things I didn't like about the engine

Made a couple of hundred cards (basically saying "This is the Tooth and Claw RPG - UK postal regulations will charge me an arm and a leg if I include a letter here, so read the Readme file on the CD" to go into the disk mailers.

Wrote the readme file; it's behind the cut and I'd be grateful for comments - it basically explains why it's taken me three years to get this out, and I'm worried it might be a bit too whiney.
Read Me )

Designed labels for the distribution disk and the FF CD-ROM. Those I'm not going to print in quantity until I'm ready to use them, those labels are expensive. One of these years I will have to look into the white topped CDs and printing on them directly, but stack loading CD Duplicators / printers cost about a grand and I can't really justify it. I'm going with one of Sue's pictures for both labels, a nice dragoness which I manipped to add a bonnet and "Votes for Dragonesses" sign.

Did some more work on the other contents of both CDs.

Hopefully everything will be ready once I have Jo's corrections. So why am I sweating so much?

Time to go out and get some fresh air, I think...

This week I watched "Horror at Fang Rock" (very silly!) and last night "The Hand of Fear" (which I quite enjoyed. I'm glad that Sarah Jane Smith later developed a better dress sense *shudder*).
According to Lovefilm, I should have "Destiny of the Daleks" tomorrow.

I will also get "Dragons of Autumn Twilight", the Dragonlance "animated film" which I foolishly added to my list. I've only read bad reviews, especially about the production "values" but I want to see for myself. I really enjoyed the books and there's something intriguing about Kiefer Sutherland doing Raistlin's voice. Oh well, we'll see.

Scam II: A Reply And Further Thoughts [Jul. 25th, 2008|01:43 pm]

Yesterday, I wrote that I thought the so-called "London Book Festival" awards were a scam. Well I'm obviously not the only person in the world who uses Google Alerts, because I woke up this morning to a reply (a public blog comment - not a private email, in case anyone was wondering) from the organisers, which in the interests of fairness I will reproduce here in full.
One reason the world is going to hell is because bloggers don't pick up the phone and ask questions. It's much easier for lazy people to hurl accusations.

Your main complaint seem to be that we're running book festivals around the world. Yes, we do, in New York City (Central Park), Hollywood and London. We've made a lot of writers, publishers and others happy at our parties, panels, events, festivals. We've had many top people speak at the events.

Does four Google ads really constitute a site "covered" in them? And yes, we support books from major publishers and smaller ones. Shoot me for supporting the little guy. We haven't set the date for the London live event yet, which is why we're not talking about it.

Maybe you should follow your own advice - check things out a bit more carefully in the future before tossing around accusations.

Best,

Russia To Ban Emo's, Goths and Halloween - No Really... [Jul. 25th, 2008|01:28 am]

angusabranson
You'd be excused to think this was a joke but the Russian Government is actually proposing a bill called "Government Strategy in the Sphere of Spiritual and Ethical Education" which calls for heavy regulation of EMO sites, banning young people dressed as emo's from entering schools and government buildings. EMO's aren't the only ones being officially blacklisted though - goths and skinheads have also been thrown in at the deep end of official disapproval and the need for re-education of their ways...

It's not the first time that EMO has been targeted by the state in Russia either...

-----
In November, the Novgorod regional education department issued a letter to all schools in the region with a description of emo culture, saying the "dream of every [emo] is to die in a warm bath from the blood of cutting their wrists."

The branch distributed the letter at the behest of the regional branch of the Federal Security Service, according to the bill's footnotes.

One school in Chelyabinsk has banned emo attire, saying it violates the Constitution because it promotes "violence," the news agency Novy Region reported.

Igor Ponkin, one of the bill's authors and a member of the Interior Ministry's public oversight council, described emo culture as a "social danger" that demands measures such as dress codes in schools, Internet regulation and state-sponsored after-school activities.
-----

Together with proposals to combat child alcoholism and pornography, the policy project outlines a raft of draconian measures such as a 10 p.m. curfew for all school-age children and a ban on tattoos and body-piercings.

Under the new measures, schools would be prohibited from celebrating Western holidays like Halloween and St. Valentine's Day, which are deemed inappropriate to "Russian culture." Toys in the shape of monsters or skeletons would be banned as "provoking aggression."

-----

The proposal also sets its sights on teenage subcultures such as emo, a style of hardcore punk, and goth, which lawmakers accuse of "cultivating bisexuality." Both styles, the legislation implies, are social scourges on a par with the skinhead movement, and must be eliminated from the social landscape.

"The country has overcome its economic crisis, but now we're faced with another kind of crisis -- a spiritual and moral one," says Natalia Karpovich, the deputy head of the Duma committee for family, women, and children that is the driving force behind the proposal.
-----

Some supporters of the project -- including Duma deputy and film director Stanislav Govorukhin -- take a particularly dim view of the country's young people, saying the new rules are chiefly intended for toddlers and children who have yet to be born. Children older than 2, says Govorukhin, are already "lost" and beyond rescue.

Most authorities, however, have been more inclusive. Russia's mounting demographic crisis means the country can ill afford to sign off on an entire generation as a hopeless cause, and the government in recent years has demonstrated a growing interest in young people. Pro-Kremlin youth groups like Nashi have found active backing, as have the newly formed Mishki, or Teddy Bears, which aims to instill patriotic values in 7- to 15-year-olds.

Critics say initiatives like Nashi and the Duma's new policy proposal smack of Soviet times, when children were heavily indoctrinated both at school and in state-sponsored movements like the Young Pioneers. Some skeptics fear the Kremlin will use the proposed legislation as a weapon to nip political dissent in the bud.

Government harassment of youth-based opposition movements like the now-outlawed National Bolsheviks only cements the conviction among many that the government's youth policy is highly selective and deeply political.

Angus-less Live Journal Posts... [Jul. 25th, 2008|01:14 am]

angusabranson
I've just realised how little 'Angus' content is on my Live Journal these days. I hardly ever talk about 'me' anymore. Indeed alot of my musings have either been about Cubicle 7 or the RPG industry as a whole with the occasional "who wants to go to the cinema this weekend" type post thrown in for good measure.

Truth is a number of things. I have actually been very busy doing work so there's not a lot of 'Angus' things tor eally talk about at the moment apart from work. Secondly, there are things happening in Angusland but there's a lot I don't neccesarily want to post to the wide world of the web.

I did however manage to break away from the computer this evening for a few and went to a pub I'd never been to before, in an area I don't know to meet up with a bunch of people I'd never met (apart from Tom whom I met about 4-6 weeks ago at The Dev and The Ballroom). This is quite a departure and accomplishment for me because I'm generally incredibly shy when meeting people I don't know outside of a work environment unless I have an introduction of somekind and the fact that I didn't suddenly decide i *should* actually stay at home and work all night (again) as a feeble excuse impressed me.

Anyway, I had a wonderful night and met some new wonderful people. Certainly will be doing that again!

Knew I'd forgotten something... [Jul. 24th, 2008|09:07 pm]

ffutures
Forgot to mention that I went back to the computer market yesterday to get the glossy paper I wanted, and fortunately they still have masses in stock so I've bought a few packs.

On the way back I thought I'd take a look in the new W.H. Smith that's opened nearby and spotted that they had a big display with a special offer that looked like two reams of 80 GSM A4 printer paper (forget the brand) for £1.99 each. Since I need the ordinary stuff as well as the glossy this looked to be a reasonably good deal by current UK paper prices. However, when you looked at it carefully it turned out to be a "buy one, get one half price" deal, with the price in big letters the half price, not the full price, which was £3.99. So a total of six pounds for two reams of fairly ordinary looking paper.

The other offer they had, which they carefully weren't pointing out, was a buy one, get one free offer on HP 80 GSM paper, which came out at £4.50 for two reams. Three guesses which one I ended up buying...

WTF RTF???? [Jul. 24th, 2008|08:29 pm]

ffutures
I just noticed that the RTF version of the character sheet was 1.2 MB, where the DOC version was 117 K and the PDF version was 88 K

So I thought... is this a problem with RTF, or is it something stupid that happened when I saved the file from Word?

So I opened it in Open Office, the only good RTF editor I have, and saved it again. And suddenly it's only 188K. Still the biggest of the three, but something I can cope with.

Not sure what the moral is, except that Word sometimes does some VERY strange things...

Steaming ahead [Jul. 24th, 2008|07:30 pm]

ffutures
[Tags|, , , ]

While I wait for Jo to get back to me with corrections, I've been finishing off the cutout model paddle steamer I designined a while ago. Basically, I've added assembly instructions and pictures of the ship, fixed a few problems, and added floor plans for the below-deck areas. I'm not going to try to model the machinery in detail, steam engines are too bloody complicated, but I do want to show where all the bits are, e.g. the boiler etc., so I've spent most of the day with Micrografx Draw, and though I say it myself, the results could be a lot worse. This is the engine room - it's ludicrously simplified and maybe looks a bit reminiscent of something that Mamod or Mecanno might sell, but I think it will just about do.

I'm especially proud of the mesh overhead walkways, which is NOT something that's easy to do with this software. The crank shaft was a total pain, and doesn't look as good as I'd like, but I think it's just about OK. This is a paste-up of two screen dumps since the engine takes up about half a page (with the boiler on one page and the rest on the next page, unfortunately - I couldn't find a way to get everything on one page without putting a page boundary somewhere even more awkward). The slightly mottled appearance at a couple of points is down to jpeg compression, it isn't in the PDF.

The rest of it was comparatively easy, apart from some silly problems getting blankets to look vaguely like blankets on the cabin beds - that took a ludicrous number of separate elements per bed to get right.

Anyway, it comes out at 14 pages and a little over a megabyte, and I think that on the whole it's good.

Anyone who wonders why I'm bothering - remember that the next release will be space travel, and if there's one thing people are certain to want in a space travel game it's deck plans for their spaceships. I might as well get up to speed now!

Friday AM: Fixed the crank shaft, not perfect but a lot better.
