Um, I read some bad news...
Is there any possiblity this is true??

Joss Whedon put in a special appearance at the Angel Booster Bash tonight. He came as Alexis' date to the banquet this evening and while here told people he will not be at Dragoncon and he had never even been scheduled to be there.

I am looking forward to Joss. Could this be a big mistake?

If this is, in fact, the case, this is the scale of head-rolling mistakes on someone's part. The fact that the Con is promoting the appearance of a significant Guest without confirmation would be a notable blow, and given the net-savvy of the typical browncoat and Buffyverse fan, would result in significant, extremely verbal bad press moving by that most pernicious of vectors, word of mouth.

This definitely needs to be a priority clarification action on the part of the Con, likely with some kind of homepage update to get the "right" information out.

(Interestingly, the comments on your link suggest he was pretty clear about being in CT that weekend, which bolsters the potential truth value of that particular rumour.)

Blame the cunning required by long years in a corporate environment while writing RPGs in one's spare time. The psychic ruptures are without limit.

Jewel herself told me in April that Joss was very excited about attending Dragon Con this year, and I know that he's scheduled for a minimum of 3 events - so I think someone might be confused. Either that or an emergency of some kind has come up (which does happen, unfortunately) and he'll be cancelling. However he wouldn't have "not known about being scheduled" that's BS.

I've seen stuff like this run both ways.

I've seen guests confirm for a convention--and then just NOT SHOW UP. (The local convention I go to gets this often, they have actually post the "sorry, but we can't come" letters as well.) Some have had valid reasons, others just decided that there was another convention (aka more money) that they'd rather go to at the last minute.

I've seen conventions list someone who hasn't confirmed yet, only to find out at the last minute that the person can't come. I've also worked for a first year convention that was so far out of it that they didn't inform all their guests as to what panels/etc they were booked for, so I had the unhappy job of informing them they needed to be someplace, when they thought they had free time.

And, recently, I saw it go both ways. The local con booked a guest that I'm friends with and he confirmed. Their slow on their website updating so he didn't make it up there at first. *Luckly*, they found out that he'd confirmed for another convention as well ON THE SAME WEEKEND. So, the sat down, talked to him, and tried to figure out what the hell happened--he's ultimately going to the other con, but better than listing him as a guest, when he isn't.

I have a feeling that the knee thing is what's keeping Joss out of ATL.

That would explain it if he were cancelling, but since the report is that he was never scheduled in the first place it doesn't answer anything.

it happens quite often..thats why when I see big names I don't get to excited..I can't help but think they fudge the guest list sometimes..

I'm waiting to hear back from a friend with an inside source at Dragon*Con. But the news that Joss and some of the cast would be at Dragon*Con was also posted on the Official Serenity site so I find it hard to believe that Joss was NEVER scheduled. This "news" sounds fishy to me.

Oh, well, if you figure out that it is, I would definitely credit you. I just desperately wanted something with even the tiniest bit of animation, but something relatively small and simple. It just fit the bill.

Here's my other icon, based on the same premise.

That posting just meant some subset of "Joss and cast" would be at those cons. For example, Joss was definitely not at the London thing. And I believe it turned out nobody was at Wizard World Philly.

if it does turn out that he never really scheduled, I would be gobsmacked knowing that whoever did the guestlist would risk facing the wrath of however many fans going just for Joss.

his name's been up there for months, and I have enough faith with DragonCon's track record that they aren't purposely misleading anyone. guests have cancelled at the very last minute without forewarning (such as John Rhys Davies), but this is odd that he says he had never been scheduled.

anyway, I wasn't interested in seeing Joss Whedon at all, though I did want to see all his fans in their various costumes. I hope it works out for them.

I have seen the latest guest list of confirmed guests, and not all of them are even on the Dragon*Con webpage,

I also know therte is a Track called Joss and the Girls that is in one of the ballrooms. I Seriously doubt that Dragon*Con would M<ake an event with a leading name, Based on that name without having Confirmed with the man. Now he could be very well confused on dates, or something else might have changed his schedule, But Dragon*Con is know for adding people Last minute because they couldn't get confirmation, Rather than adding people who aren't confirmed. On the Browncoats website the list a apperences includes Dragoncon http://browncoats.serenitymovie.com/serenity/index.html?fuseaction=tools.shownews&news_id=124

Speaking as a tech staffer
[info]domesticat

This is me with my dragon*con tech staffer hat on. Bear in mind that I am NOT an official spokesman for dragon*con, and my statements should only be taken as the observations of a tech staffer.

But ...

I've seen an early, preliminary schedule for 'con, and Joss Whedon's name appears all over the place on it. Both tech and security are making contingency plans to deal with the overflow crowds that are expected because of Whedon/Serenity. Basically, if he's not showing up, it's news to both security and tech.

There is always the possibility of a screwup. I cannot discount that. However, my gut tells me that it's unlikely given that we have a schedule that has him showing up in several places, and I'm forwarding the link on to one of the directors to see if I can get a confirm/deny on the rumor.

That's all I can do right now. I don't know that it helps, but it's the best I can do.

From Joss's post on whedonesque.com:

Hi boys and girls. I'm not going to Dragoncon. As far as I know, I was never ASKED to go to Dragoncon. I didn't even know when or where it was. I have nothing against Dragoncon per se (unless actual dragons are there, which would be scary and dangerous) (and "acchio Firebolt" doesn't really work for just anyone) but I have other plans. I don't know about the actors -- I assume the ones listed are actually going and I'll make sure we confirm that. Sorry for the confusification but it is not of my making.

Gotta fly, peeps. But not to Atlanta. -j.

I know this is already being worked out, i have seen a gazillion posts about it but i have one comment.

That doesn't even sound like Joss' writing. He does indeed get quirky with his wording as proven in many scripts and letters to various websites, but the writing here just isn't in his flavor.

Not trying to be nit picky, just adding my .02

On WHEDONesque.com Joss does post there from time to time, that's for sure. Joss didn't book himself for D*C, someone else handled that. I'm sure Joss is just mixed up on his own plans, I mean the man is busy as heck, I'm sure he gets himself mixed up all the time.

Indeed, there seems to be some communication issues btw. Joss-Universal-D*C because Universal is continuing to confirm his appearance, while Joss continues to post no knowledge of it on Whedonesque. Hopefully this will all be cleared up shortly. Quite often in these cases (in my little experience), the studio does have a BIG say so in where people go for promoting new films, so don't give up hope just yet. (Though I also would hate for Joss to have to be too inconvenienced with an appearance if he has other, more important stuff going on that weekend.)

I'll still be having fun either way!! :-D
