Pregnant Wife
We had so much fun at last years D*C08, but it seems there's a bit of a problem, My wife is in her pregnancy and was wondering if anyone had any great tips for pregnant women who attend the con, anything to keep them happy without the hurting (walking around too much). I'm open to any ideas and opinions. She's so excited, she didn't want to miss this years con because of the guests they have this year. It's a good thing I was able to reserve a room last year for the hyatt this year.

Thanks Guys.

dont let her drink ANYTHING a pirate hands her. In fact, dont let them breathe on her either... that might still be dangerous.

I was 31 weeks pregnant during last year's con. I still enjoyed it, though I did have a tough time with sore, swollen feet and fatigue.

My best advice is to do things at her pace. Sit often, and have plenty of water for her to drink. :) And don't forget to head back to the room so she can take a nap when she needs to.

Much luck and have fun!!

When my friend who was almost at the end of her pregnancy went to con, we took an easily foldable camping chair(which someone else in our group usually carried) so that she could sit when we were in line, and i took it upon myself to clear the way in elevators/really packed crowds for her. Other than that, she needed to sit down and go up to the room and put her feet up a little more than she was used to (usually party animal). But we had a great time!

Also, make sure she stays hydrated. I would suggest keeping her own water bottle that she can refill at stations in the panel rooms, even if she has to do with the little cups. Keeping a few snacks in her bag/purse would be handy too, sugar, protein, whatever is getting her through her days now +1.

There are bathrooms pretty evenly spaced around con, and if what she is interested in is the guests, she shouldn't have a problem being close to one. (These are things one must think about) :)
Everyone was really great to my friend. Have fun.

I really like your idea on the fold-able camping chair, although i found one that lets you put up your feet, we were thinking of resting near one of our friends table if she ever needs to rest her feet or take a quick nap to regain her strength, since it would be really tiring walking back and forth to the hotel room. About what you said about the guests, what do you mean she shouldn't have a problem being close to one?

On one hand, being in the Hyatt will be great since you will have access to DC*TV. On the other hand, if you get stuck in the main tower, the elevators *will* be a problem. Try to get in one of the other towers if you can.

My wife needed a lot of rest, so my thought would be to pace yourselves. It's easy to forgot hoe tiring con can be under normal conditions.

Also, depending on what level of smoke exposure you are comfortable with, remember you may have trouble going from the Marriott to the Hyatt at night, so plan accordingly.

Everyone's given great thoughts so far. I would just reiterate:

Schedule in time for RESTING. Seriously, a few hours out, a few hours in and nap, a few hours out, a few hours in and then crash out early. It'll make a serious difference to be able to crash out in a nice air conditioned room with some DC*TV going. Being well rested also REALLY helps with immunity.

Eat well. I mean SERIOUSLY well. Don't skip meals, or eat just junk, and carry snacks around, bring fruits and veggies or whatever she can tolerate. Lack of food/drink and tiredness are going to be her main enemies. Get used to carrying a bag of food/drink if you don't already.

I didn't do any conventions while I was pregnant, but I did go to Disney World twice while pregnant. The last time, I was 32 weeks along.

Lots of rest, lots of fluids, VERY comfortable shoes, and a comfy bed should go a long way towards helping her get through the convention without difficulty.

If she isn't already walking regularly, she needs to start now. Just start with a short walk around the block and work up from there, as long as her doctor says it's okay. The more walking she does now, the easier the trip will be on her.

I would think that people would be polite enough to let her sit down whenever she needs to, especially if she's pretty far along.

:)

No major troubles and that was in 2007. The addition of the 4th hotel and the skywalk should make it easier for your wife.

Great advice thus far. I was about 5 months along last year. I'll reiterate, rest, take breaks often, drink LOTS of water, and eat real, regular meals. And for the love of god take those prenatal vitamins -- con crud while pregnant would suck!

I took it easy last year -- didn't stress if I missed a panel, etc. I was tired but came out of it just fine.

I was 8 months pregnant at the con last year and the best advice is go to disability services and have the disability sticker put on her badge.

I got to sit while waiting for panels, was able to get up and go to the bathroom (important when you are pregnant!) and I met some really shiny people.

I was tired, but it was do-able (though the beds in the Marriott sucked for a pregnant lady - they were too soft!)

Ditto what everyone else said. Try to build nap time into your schedule. Even if she doesn't need to sleep, I know that I needed time to just lay back with my feet up to give my legs and back a rest. I planned for sleeping right before lunch and sent my husband to get food for us while I rested, and that worked pretty well for us.

The skywalks were a blessing for me, trying to avoid the smoking, used them every chance I could.

Always having a bottle of water on hand is an absolute, and granola bars or cups of fruit (so they don't get bruised in a bag) were very handy to have as well.

The great thing is that now that they're showing more panels on DCTV, even if she's too tired to deal with sitting through another panel, she can still go back to the room, kick her feet up, and watch one of the big panels on tv.

For non-pregnancy reasons, I also have to sit a lot -- so I'm trying like mad to find a local shop that sells these cane seat jobbies -- I want to test one to make sure I won't fall straight over, or pinch my tushy, and if it fits me then I want to decorate it to match my costume. Might ask your ob/gyn if s/he thinks this would be a good idea, and if not, recommend a nearby place to buy one?

One thing I can thing of to add to all the suggestions here is, if possible, to bring a small portable microwave with you. There are lots of options now in non-frozen reheatable meals - soup bowls, easyMac, etc. You wouldn't believe what a difference it makes to your rest level to be able to go back to the room and grab something hot in peace and quiet, instead of having to crowd in long lines in the food court.

She will be hungry almost always. She'll also be thirsty, and she very well may get depressed because there's so much that she'll be too tired to do. If she doesn't do this already, train her in the elbows-out belly-guarding style whenever navigating through crowds. I was very pregnant last year at Dragon*Con. I had fun, but my stamina was definitely waning. I also went to disabled services to get the sticker on my badge. You may need her in sight for that, but if that is the case, they have chairs she can sit in while they go get her badge. Yes, it's true, she wouldn't have to stand in line, just go to DA, give them her info (and show the baby belly), they'll take it down and ask her to take a seat while they fetch it.

Good luck with your endeavor, and I hope to see you this year! Look for a trio of Incredibles.

that's really some great advice, well i know shes not looking to see all the panels, but what she really wants to do is go to the hall of fame, shop a little, and take lots of pictures with costume members. As for the disabled services, we are def. taking up that offer. As of today, I'm calling them to reserve a wheelchair for her so she can sit anytime she wants or just enjoy the ride. Thanks melodicblue, i'll be looking for yall incredibles trio, as i'll be the Gingy from shrek.
