Star Wars vs. Sports
Saw this on YouTube and had an immediate flashback to an argument I had with the sports editor at my college newspaper... and knew people in this comm would enjoy (bad acting and all).

Meanwhile if you can retain both [traditional "geek"] and sports trivia in your brain at once, you are a geek twice over?

Remember that the football fans crashing Dragon*Con who dress up to support their teams are just cosplayers with licensed apparel :)

Very true. And then there are those among us who somehow are both nerds and athletes... [me -facepalm- Although FAR more nerd than athlete.]

Of course, I can't support the fans that are crashing D*C because my school is their opponent, but its kinda similar. They buy theirs, not make them, but its cool. They shall be one of us! [one of us! one of us!]

ok, stopping now. ^.^

Oh. My. Gosh. *falls on floor laughing*

Thank you to whoever made this film and thank you, wiebke, for posting it!

Though, I have to disagree with the Kurosawa answer. The only thing from The Hidden Fortress that Lucas took away was the film's perspective told through the eyes of two lower class characters. Joseph Campbell's book Hero With A Thousand Faces had a bigger influence on the story. *shines "film geek" badge*

not trying to be a smart ass but in one of the many "special edition" star wars dvd releases lucas mentioned how big of an influence kurosawa all together was on him, hidden fortress just parallel's with star wars a lot

not to say that he wasn't inspired by other things, everyone is inspired by SOMETHING

except for j. k. rowling ... she just rips everything off, barely changes it around and tada .. here was have a seriously boring story spread over a crap load of pages :D (oh i'm gonna get burnt for this one)

Actually, Hidden Fortress doesn't really parallel Star Wars that much. I know which interview you're talking about where Lucas said that it influenced his work. He later said in another interview that he misspoke and the only influence was the servant characters' POV. However, Kurosawa did influence him, and he meant just in general with his style.

(Dorky film fact: Lucas and Spielberg help to revitalize Kurosawa's nearly dead career in the '80s. Kinda sweet, don'cha think?)

i guess so ... i mean not like lucas can make up his mind on ANYTHING!
he really needs to stop beating a dead horse and just MOVE on .... star wars was great and revolutionized the way films were made (especially sci fi) but jesus ... leave it alone now!

the whole hidden fortress/star wars comparison: over the years i've read most commonly that hidden fortress was a BIG driving force regarding how star wars was shot (and how the story was told)

if you break star wars down for its influences, it ranges from religious influences to cultural references across history
hard to pin point something like that

personally, as much as i like kurosawa's films for the sake of art, they do get draggy entertainment wise
i know that's just something you don't say but that's how i feel about a lot of acclaimed films

for instance i would much rather watch FOR A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS than YOJIMBO
not to say that the remake was a better art film, but it certain has more of an appeal for me (big western fan)

hehe, lucas and spielberg DID help kurosawa's career in the 80s, but who's going to help save lucas' career in the end? :D

i love that video .
I have long said there is little difference between The guy at a con dressed as darth maul and the guy painted green with a flapping eagles hat ( well aside from a light saber hurting more than a foam finger )

but hey in philly even the geeks are sports fans ( they hurt my brain here with the sports fanaticism )

I'm guessing you're from Philly then? Lol. Philly people are all nerds in their own way (My family currently Lives in Bucks County)

The only eagles game i ever went to was the playoff game like 2 years ago when they were sooooo close to getting in the superbowl. They won the game I was at, but lost the last playoff. [boooo] but yeah. We are all alike in our own special way. ^.^

hehe, "super bowel"
all the same crap to me!

sports geek .... that's a bit of an oxymoron if you ask me
none of my geeks even care for any sports related events
[other than the real patriotic ones who also happen to be victims of pop culture, they'll watch the super "bowel" once a year, and make excuses that the commercials are fun! ... yea! ... youtube will have those same commercials up in minutes! ..... i forgive them for it]

but hey, to some it's the SUPER bowl .... to some it's the super bowel
:D
