Hullo there! This may sound bit stupid, but could it be possible to get an "example" what the finished picture should look like, as in do you add the textures yourself or are they added later as in the first example http://community.livejournal.com/dragon_book/6011.html and so on. Basically everything that hasn't something to do with the dragon pic itself. Just to be sure. |

[Nov. 19th, 2008|06:13 pm] |
i was thinking of making something kind of bizarre, like the tail being a huge set of jaws and the head being a faux dummy thing, and wings covered in eyeballs, but when i tried sketching something it came out more like an archaeopteryx. i was hoping to post a better sketch than this, but with MIDfur X Aussie fur con only a few weeks away, i've run out of time, sorry :(

ah... I did pencils awhile ago and never did post them.
( Right here )
I guess I'm bad like that lol.
I need to fix up a few things, but lemme know if anything really stands out. Chances are he'll change a bit anyway. and I'll probably do the rest digitally. :3 |

Hai guys!
Thanks to everyone who posted a sketch on time. :3 (This includes those of you who posted waaaaay at the beginning - major kudos!)
So I think everyone's going to be really busy over the holidays, what with finals, seeing family and friends, all that good stuff. So I'm going to make the next deadline at the beginning of next year.
Please get at least a refined sketch in by January 31, 2009! Linework, some color if you're going to have that, something we can critique would be great. :) We also still want to see your sketches, because this is supposed to be a "field guide" looking collection, after all. ;)
That's nearly 3 months from now! Please plan accordingly. :3 |

| Mimic Dragon (concept isn't done) |
[Oct. 31st, 2008|12:08 am] |
Okay, originally this guy was supposed to be a straight "money" dragon, but I thought he'd be more plausable if he mimiced non organic substances in general. So, this isn't done, but I wanted to post something. I'm definitely going to change stuff, this is just concept.
I'll post updates when I fix it.

Height: 5ft at the shoulder Length: 25ft Wingspan: 30ft
The heads are going to show how the dragon's scales change over numerous sloughing (like how snakes shed their scales)
Anyway, the Mimic is an ambush species that must rely on camouflage to catch its prey. They have rather long tails, which they use to anchor themselves, or if they are in water, to propel themselves out of the water. Their scales can take on the attributes of non organic substances (not plants or animals) easily, though the changes never last long. Humans discovered that, if confined for a long time to one specic object, the dragon's scales would duplicate it to an extraordinary degree. Some enterprising soul stole a Mimic egg and placed it in a bank vault, and kept the hatchling there until it successfully created picture perfect coins from its hide. Eventually the marvel of the Mimic caused a great deal of over hunting, making them nearly extinct in the wild. There is high demand for these on the black market. |

| Dates (tentative) |
[Aug. 22nd, 2008|02:26 pm] |
Hey again!
Thanks for replying to my last post. :3 It seems like a lot of people are concerned about the deadline, so I'll address that.
So I talked with dustwing (she's currently busy with RL and has given me free reign over this project in the meantime OMGRUNAWAYAAAAAAHHHHH). Aaaaaaaanyway. XD
So I talked with her and basically she said that she wants this community to be very low-stress, and first and foremost a fun project. :) I agree, but I also know that without deadlines, a lot of people (me especially) don't get work done. SO. I'm going to put out some loose initial dates and work from there. Guys, look them over and let me know if there's like NO WAY you can get this done on time. :3
Concept chosen: by the middle of September (9/15/2008) First sketch: by Halloween (10/31)
... aaaaaaand, that's all I'll throw out for now. :) That gives you guys, from here, 3 weeks to choose an idea, and another 6 weeks from there to get an initial sketch. That's a ton of time, I know, but the concept and first few sketches are some of the hardest ones, while you're trying to pin down what you want your dragon to look like. ;)
Again, this is a really loose timeline, so suggestions are appreciated. :3 |

Hey all,
So it's been a little quiet here, I know. I just wanted everyone who reads this to please comment and tell me if you're still seriously interested in this project! I want to gauge who's still here, who's still thinking about this, and whatnot. :)
Thanks! :D |

It has been a while since I last saw a update, but I think it is safe to assume that this project is still going on yes?
I have spent some time drawing and redrawing some concepts and ideas. Keeping to a simple idea and trying to merge the two subjects into one being. After quite a few sketches, I found one that I like the most and will show here for some input. :)
These of course are rough sketches. :3

Here's the WIP of my Malaysian Moon Moth Dragon, Dractias maenas, which is a collab between charreed and myself (concept and lineart by me, which she is coloring); here is the grayscale shaded layer...
( Behind here... )
(It will look similar to this when colored: http://www.knubblefoot.com/MySpace/Actias_maenasM.jpg )
I still gotta figure out a background story/info for this little guy! :)

| Dragon Book: Juvenile Pothos Dragon |
[Jun. 18th, 2008|12:38 am] |
Originally I was going to go with an oscar-fish dragon. But staring at the vining plant growing around my kitchen, I was more inspired by the Pothos plant.
Link about them here, for those unfamiliar: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epipremnum_aureum
And a picture of what I've got so far, a juvenile one. Meaning, these are still more animal-based, rather than plant-based. And they're still somewhat mobile. As they grow older, then tend to become more eastern-dragon like, and don't move very much. THis one just seemed rather lively to my mind, so I drew it like that.

| [ | mood |
| | peaceful | ] | Hey guys :3
I chose Sakura/Cherry Blossom for my dragon, and here's what I doodled up:

It's gonna be pushed a lot more (less pink thing with petals I guess), this is just a doodle in color XD I'll probably also make them less cute-sy, and the final wouldn't be digital like this to get more of that rough sketchook/fieldguide type feeling that we all know and love.
So yeah, just dumping ideas here, any thoughts appreciated! :3 |

| Example Page |
[May. 30th, 2008|05:22 pm] |
Here is a very rough layout for the book. I've chosen the Fork Dragon because the design is unique and interesting while clearly remaining dragon-like and avoiding an artificial look. The text I've written hasn't been edited and it ends abruptly because it can go on for more pages if desired.

After my last post, I decided to tweak my dragons design a bt more and show it in a better/more informative pose than a standard profile.
