PSP port, release candidate 1
So it looks like this is going faster than expected. The port is pretty much finished apart from fixing a few bugs in the game's script where it doesn't work well with the wider screen. But it is playable from the beginning to the end, and very fun :D

Link (link 2, apologies for the dumb bandwidth issues)

This isn't the final version yet, but it'd be nice to have it playtested, to see if others can spot any bugs that aren't in the readme yet... Also not quite sure about the legality of redistributing the AGTP translated version...?

Hmmm... Does this work with the 2.71 firmware? And if so, how would I go about getting this to work on 2.71? I can't find any proper FAQs on it.

Running any homebrew software on the PSP is of questionable legality and involves hacking your system, so you're probably not gonna find answers here. :/ I don't think it would be against the rules to tell you that you'll need a firmware downgrader, though, as well as some other tools that will probably cost money. It's a long, involved project, and the most fun part of all is that you could render your PSP completely nonfunctional forever if you mess up. ^^;

Heh, fun times for all!

Since I'm really illiterate when it comes to doing that sort of 'hacking' business, regardless of how minor it is, I feel no desire to run the risk of junking a 300-dollar gift. I'll just have to sit back and dream of how much I'd enjoy playing this if there were a way for casual players to pull it off.

Yeah, sorry about that. There are so many factors out there involving running homebrew on a PSP, that it'd be beyond the scope of this LJ to go into details. I will say that the success rate is higher than people make it, *IF* you take your time and do everything right. That is, most bricks occur because of human error than a completely uncontrollable human error. I've "played with" two PSP's (mine and a friends), both with different motherboards and firmware versions.

What I will say is, NEVER update the firmware if you ever intend on unlocking homebrew. I cannot stress this enough.

The only bug I found is that trying to exit using the Home button didn't work. This was during the title sequence. This normally means you need to tell your main loop to exit when notified by the exit callback.

It works great though!

I reuploaded the fixed version.
Funny how I never tried to exit that way...

Thanks for fixing it so quickly.

I started playing from the beginning and have gotten up to the Labyrinth. Not long now until I've caught up with where I got stuck on the PC version. I'm quite terrible at computer games! :-)

Oh by the way, I sent you a PM on PS2Dev. I hope you don't mind.

I'm posing the same question as Daimera up there, reguardless of answers or not. Does it work with 3.40 OE-A?

And yes, miano, those who run homebrew on their PSP do know of the dangers, and of the possibility of bricking their PSP. But it's not too long and involved a project: Downgrading my PSP just took a copy of Lumines, the Noobz downgrader, and Dark_AleX's 3.40 Open Edition custom Firmware.

(I won't link to the downgrading stuff though, but I will say Sony sucks for not encouraging the homebrew community in the first damn place. :/)

It should work with all recent OE firmware. I think I'm on 3.10 and it works fine.

The process itself is not long at all, you're right. However, there are a bunch of factors to consider when doing it. I did mine back in January (with a TA-082 mobo and 2.71, I think it was, before they found the GTA and goofy exploit, I believe). I had to find the exact files to use to avoid bricking it. It would have been a great disappointment to end up with a 200 dollar paperweight...

Finally, I agree with your Sony statement. In the least, they should have backed up their support of the portable instead of let it fall into obscurity.

I run 340oe on mine, actually. ^^ I just wanted to provide safe warning in case [info]lemshadra happened not to know how you can mess things up.

And I agree that Sony sucks for that. :x However, I make up for it by mostly running homebrew and emulators on mine, thus supporting them as little as possible. :3 For me the PSP is like a GP2X on steroids. ^^;

Also, just to answer you, this worked fine on my system. ^^

dude you are a moron, you and everyone who says "sony sux for no homebrew lolz" use your freaking head for five seconds for the love of god.

Sure, with homebrewing made available, anyone could make their own fun games to played on the psp making it a great system...but let's look at the other end...say someone write a program that lets them use their psp to hack into other computers via wifi hotspots...let's say people make homebrew emulators for everyone's favorite systems (which they have) well let's see here, emulators and roms are illegal if the one playing them does not own the original game.

So let's say my server gets hacked by some dude on a psp, or let's say my new game I just released gets virtually stolen via rom/emulator...well I'm pretty sure that gives me reasonable cause to sue the shit out of sony.

So looking at it from sony's point of view. Should they please a few gamers or support illegal activities and reap whatever that may sow? If you chose choice 1, you would be correct.

damned ignorant gamers don;t know anything about the industry

Works great ;-) The other glitch I've found is to press START several times in a row while playing. It'll play one more frame of the game, and will return to Continue/Reset/Exit screen.

Also not quite sure about the legality of redistributing the AGTP translated version...?

My general rule of thumb is that anything that Pixel is OK with, I'm OK with, so I don't have any problems with the translation being used. However, since Gideon Zhi also worked on the project, it'd be a good idea to contact him as well.

Nice job! I wish I could test it.

This is amazing; I've been waiting forever for Cave Story PSP, and you've delivered. I'm especially impressed by the full-screen action on the large rooms. Thank you!

Other than the bugs you've mentioned in the Readme, the start-up animation (the white screen with "PSP" on it, which appears right after starting up the game from the XMB) was screwy and off-centre the first time I ran the game. It hasn't happened since that first time, though, and it didn't seem to affect gameplay at all. I'm using 3.40 OE-A.

It does run at 50hz (FPS) correct?

I think the wide screen display makes the game look terrible, is there a normal ratio option?

I've been playing this on my new(ly purchased from eBay) PSP, and I'm up to the Labyrinth now. So far, so good, I'm rather impressed with the speed at which you managed to generate this high-quality port of this great game.

That's not to say that I'm not still patiently waiting for the DS version, Ravenworks, but for now, I'll play on my PSP :)

Just beat the Sacred Grounds. Excellent port. The issues listed are extremely minor. The only thing I would have liked was a slightly different button configuration, because it was kinda hard to charge the spur and jump around at the same time (well, it might have been easier with an additional button for shooting, don't really know)... I know you said you'd add "profiles", is that what you meant?

Oh, and you should be in the credits at the end, unless I missed you.. ^_^

Noticed a somewhat major issue earlier this week. On my way up through the deathtrap in the Plantation, I took a leap off the side of the rocket to collect the health upgrade from our doggy friend. Afterwards, I jumped off to the right and, upon encountering the Bat Swarm enemy, had the PSP hard-crash. It took a solid 30 seconds of holding the "off" switch to get it to actually turn off and restart. Of course, this only happened once, so I don't know if this is a common issue or not.

A friend of mine went to Portland with nothing to keep him entertained but this PSP Cave Story port. And it's working great from what I hear, except for one thing:

Every once in a while, the Down command on the d-pad will get stuck and won't un-stick until he quits and restarts the game. He says it seems random when it starts but it seems to be happening more frequently the later he gets in the game. Does anyone know what that could be?
