Two pieces of good news!
Neither one is a demo, but yeah ;D

Okay, the first one is that, work has been wearing me out lately and Cave Story DS is hitting some very tricky 'optimisation' portions. That part's not the good news. ;) The good news is that I've gotten Pixel's permission to bring a very talented DS programmer friend of mine in on the project; he'll be helping it out as a second pair of hands, plus his just general expertise when it comes to writing good code for the DS. He'll probably be introducing himself here shortly, but he's kindof shy so he asked to not be named ;) So yes, this should hopefully get things rolling again time-wise. There's actually a build in the works that involved guns, but it was starting to lag like crazy... I cleaned it up some, but I'm sure Tursi and BrokenWing remember from when I was making the GBA Organya demo that sometimes it takes a level of expertise to get that stuff done right.. :P

The OTHER good news is, everyone who donated however long ago that was, your money has not fallen into Limbo; Pixel has finally relented in his japanese politeness and is letting us buy him a DS! ;)

We've got $60 (see below) so far. Anybody who's ever wished that Cave Story were shareware, or at least donationware, so you could tip Pixel for his hard work and creativity, now's your chance to buy him some handheld gaming goodness ;) Apparently the last system he owned was an N64... (And hell, this is just speculation, but once he's got the hardware to run homebrew, who knows what he might be curious enough to try writing..? :D) I know we did a bunch of research back then on what would be a good place to order to Japan from (or whether it would be better to buy domestically and ship it all from here?), and which card reader to get... but I'm sure things have changed a lot, so, any good recommendations of places (and things) to order are welcome ;) (I'm still using an M3CF, so that should tell you how in-touch I am with DS homebrew hardware these days :p I hear the R4s are good?)

Total so far: $410

Note: I cannot accept any more credit card or debit card donations, sorry. Blame Paypal!

Donate as you see fit :) I'll edit this post with updates as they arrive...

Great news.

Donated - hopefully we'll get enough to buy Pixel a game or two as well? There are surely some fantastic DS platform games, shoot-em-ups and RPGs that he would like.

Indeed :) We'll see how much we wind up with... And thanks, on behalf of Pixel, for your contribution! :)

Or at least a Supercard of some sort, so that he doesn't have to pay for games! :D

We're getting him an R4 so he can run homebrew games, like CS:DS... but I think as a game creator, he wouldn't be a big fan of game piracy...

There are a few people on here who write games for a living. Thanks for stealing from us.

DS lite: http://kakaku.com/itemlist/I2050205020N101/
R4DS: http://gametool.jp/
microSD: http://kakaku.com/sku/pricemenu/sd.htm

gametool seems to take credit cards. on kakaku, any store where they accept credit cards and do cheap delivery should be fine.

I played the last demo you showed today...I was surprised at how smooth it looks on the DS screen. I am really looking forward to playing the game again.

After all of the weird and horrible stuff I've done with the fandom, the least I can do is help buy the guy a DS. Count me in!

In answer to the R4 cards, they are awesome as i would recommend it, my cousins have 1 in their ds and it allows them to play anygame they want to download that is a ds game

Sent $10 :P

So what happens if you get too much?

Buy him more games, perhaps?

I sent 10$ as well... Cave Story is worth WAY more than that, so it seems like just a little price to me. Thanks to ravenworks for managing all this (and for working on the DS port too, of course!).

Either we include a game, or -- if we get way too much, but this would be really cool -- we find someplace to paint a Balrog on it. XD

I dunno, I'd put it to a vote among the folks who donated :) I'm more planning on cutting it short once we've got nearly enough, and just paying the last little bit out of my pocket, rather than being like "ummm, there's $12 unused in my paypal now" and being in that awkward situation ;P

Or just donate the rest to pixel for gifting us with this amazing game.

In a pinch, yeah! Kinda defeats the purpose of getting a gift, though? Anyway, it probably won't come to that.. The DS, plus R4+miniSD package comes to about $195 US. Unless folks are really enthusiastic about finding somebody who can paint a Balrog on it (then glaze it somehow, so finger-sweat won't make it come off), I'll probably just wait for the $190 mark and pay the rest... actually, I guess I should make a post finding out. :P

Actually we should get the R4 card and a SD card for him. 2 gigs should be enough. I remember my R4 and Memory card with shipping all together cost me around 80 bucks

That's the plan, yeah. Ufo_Z's comment lists a place that has an R4+microSD bundle for what translates to $56 USD if we get the 1 gig, and $65 USD for the 2 gig. A DS lite in the link in the same comment is about $140 US, so we're nearly there.

Glaze, huh? I just got myself a DS, so I'm gonna see if I can't airbrush Balrog on it. I'm fairly certain that the graphics lab has some kind of glaze or sealant (like what is used to keep airbrushed designs on cars, etc).

So if there were enough money (and enough trust in me...) to somehow get a Japanese DS to Winnipeg, I could airbrush Balrog on it. Er, I'll see if it works out on mine first, I guess. Pics hopefully forthcoming!

Oh, and the good news is, DSes are region-free, so we could do it with a US one, if he doesn't mind the manual being in english ;) (I'm pretty certain there's no major differences in the hardware between regions... I'll have to confirm this somewhere though.)

Have yet to complete this game. The last 3 or 4 bosses are too damn hard for me atm.

I do love the music.

And the ability to hover with the machine gun.

I hope to complete it soon but I had to donate $10. Nice work pixel :D
