! INTRODUCTION

dothack_awards is an icon contest for the various anime series .hack//SIGN, .hack//LIMINALITY, .hack//DUSK (.hack//Legend of the Twilight), and, of course, the .hack games.

You do not have to be an graphics designer to join. We welcome artists of all skill levels and encourage participation in two ways:

make icons for the challenge

vote in the polls

You must be a member of the community to participate.

While we know it can be hard to enter every week, we need icons in order to vote. Enter the current contest here.

! SYSTEM

Tuesday 7:00 p.m. (EST): Theme posted, winners from last contest posted. Banners will be posted within three or four days of winner announcement.

Friday 7:00 p.m. (EST): A reminder is posted.

Monday 5:00 p.m. (EST): Current contest is ended, voting begins.

ATTENTION: I'll try not to be late, but I have a full-time job as well as my last semester of graduate school, so I hope you'll bear with me if I get overloaded.

! THE WORLD

Attention older members: the format of this contest will change starting May 2006.

Each week, a technical challenge will be posted. Technical challenges may include

certain colors

size limitations

incorporation of current icon trends

punctuation

animations

etc.

Also posted will be three ways to interpret the theme:

a word
an image
a lyric

The technical theme must be incorporated into each icon submitted. One, two, or all three of the interpretations may be used. Up to three icons may be submitted for each contest unless otherwise indicated.

! RULES

1 - The images used in the icons must be official art. No doujinshi or fan art will be accepted unless one has easily viewable evidence of the permission given to them by the artist who created it.

2 - Icons submitted must be 100x100 pixels and 40kb or under. Filetypes must be .JPG, .GIF, or .PNG. If your icon does not meet this criteria, you will be notified once. If you do not alter the incorrect icon, it will be disqualified.

3 - All entries should include the image, the image's URL, and any comments/credits you would like to display. It's very helpful to include the font face if you used text so that the winners' banners can match as closely as possible.

4 - Icons submitted must be newly made for the contest. Icons that have been used in the past or that have been "flashed" will not be permitted to enter. If any such icons are found the person will be immeadiately disqualified unless stated otherwise (I'm not as nice as

sunset_avenue and will ban multiple offenders, so please keep track of what icons you have currently entered and don't display them until the contest is over).

5 - You must follow the childish, but extremely important "golden rule" if you decide to criticize someone's work. It's essential that people's feelings are not intentionally hurt. Even though this is not a rating community, some people may feel that they should express their personal opinions. Members may give their opinion, but please try and be sensible. I encourage you to list reasons for your votes, although this is by no means required. But positive feedback is always nice to see. I'll happily email any comments made to a submitter who asks.

Good: I like the colors you used, but the words seem a little crooked.

Bad: The letters on the icon look awful. Did you do it with your eyes closed or something?

6 - All entries must be turned in by the deadline. Icons submitted after the deadline has already passed will be politely refused.

! VOTING
Voting is a large part of an icon community (just as much as actually submitting an icon). Therefore, it is extremely important that you make a true effort to vote during each contest. If you cannot, for what ever reason, that's fine (in other words, I won't ban you for not voting). However, voting is greatly appreciated.

Voting will occur if there are at least five seperate members who submitted. A person can place first, second, or third. There is the moderator's choice award and sometimes a special category (only if there's an abundance of icons).

The same icon cannot be picked again. The only exception is the special category. With the special category you can choose one of the ones you've already chosen or pick a new one.
