SPX 2008 [Jul. 25th, 2008|01:13 am]

[music |The Beatles - Don't Let Me Down]

I sat down earlier and started making a list of all the stuff I need to start putting together for SPX this year, hoping to get a head start on the work - a couple new mini comics, new shirts, new buttons, tiny paintings, prints...

...and then I remembered that I don't have a table lined up this year!

Oh well. I guess it will be nice to be able to go and just hang out and actually spend the weekend looking at comics and goofing off. I believe I'll be signing at the New Reliable Press table at some point (You Ain't No Dancer 3 will be debuting), so I am still planning to have some new mini comics with me for that, and also for trading as I walk around the rest of the weekend. Other than a few mini comics, I don't plan on bringing much of anything down with me.

I do have another batch of shirts in the works, which I'll be selling online. I'm thinking about maybe taking pre-orders this time around and only printing enough to fill the pre-orders, simply because screen printing shirts myself is a lot of work! Expect to see a mock up of the new shirts sometime in the coming weeks. I can tell you that they will be available in two different colors, I think yellow printed on dark maroon shirts and a yet to be decided color printed on light blue shirts.

Heading out to SDCC in the morning! I'll be signing copies of Comic Book Tattoo at the Image Comics booth (#2729) with [info]newjason, who wrote the story I drew (I think it's the fourth one in the book). I'll also have buttons & prints and I'll be doing little sketches during my times. If you're having trouble catching me and you really want to say hey or buy stuff, just email me and maybe we can meet up. ;)

Signing Schedule - Image Comics Booth #2729

Friday: 2pm to 3pm
Saturday:  2pm  to 3pm
Sunday: 3pm to 4pm

Also, the CBT panel will be in room 6b at 11:30am on Saturday. Anyway, we're crazy psyched about the show. Hope to see you there!

Oh, and I'll likely be Twittering from the show.

inkdick, it's back and better than ever. [Jul. 24th, 2008|11:48 pm]

[music |ben folds "late"]

inkdickSo in case you haven't noticed, inkdick, the journal comic I've been doing since April, is back up and running. I got behind posting them, and got way fucking behind doing them. Yeah, I got the semi-valid excuse that I was in the middle of finals and in the middle of moving to a new house, and that my crappy scanner broke on me (literally, shattered glass everywhere), but excuses are lame. So I'm back up and running.

So, until I get caught back up, I WILL BE POSTING 2 TO 3 INKDICKS UP EVERYDAY. That's right, EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Until I get all caught up again. Right now I'm about a month behind (June 29th is the last completed strip I have so far, but I'm working on it) and at my current schedule I won't get caught up until mid to late-August. At that point I'll try to post up a day behind, so there will be one new comic up everyday. But we'll get to that bridge when we cross it.

For now, check the site everyday for updates, and be sure to click the "previous" button to view the other comics I post up that day. Afterall, you don't want to miss any days in my exciting life, right? (Spoiler alert: An upcoming strip deals with me shopping for canned corn. Exciting, I know.)

This posting schedule will be good, trust me. You get an ass-load of inkdicks (that sounds dirty, I am sorry) and I am forced to create at LEAST two inkdicks a day just to stay ahead of my posting schedule and that will force me to get caught up faster and be able to spend more time on other (better) comic projects, instead of having these journal comics looming over my head.

Sorry I got behind, but I'm back for a long while. Get used to it.

I usually think of myself as Earth and Silber as Fire (especially because he totally has the hots for Azula), but he disagrees and is convinced that due to my hot headed personality and his mellow compliment, the kingdoms should be reversed.

I'll show him >:C (such a Fire Nation thing to say, I know)

Wow, when I don't draw for a month my anatomy goes to shit. Well, lesson learned.

Jess Hates Her Fucking Job [Jul. 24th, 2008|06:35 pm]

jenisis
Well, thanks Twitter for fucking up my story.
Let's try this again (anything in parenthesis wasn't in the original twitters):

Anyway, we're understaffed and I'm undertrained and its busy and customers are freaking out at me for going slow and not knowing how to do complicated shit.

And I need help but my supervisor can't do it because there's a huge line and if she came to help it would leave only one teller on the line

And so the only person that can help is the bank manager (Basel), but he's never been a teller and has no idea what to do

And my station is frozen and they're both telling me to do transactions and now I'm freaking out because I CAN'T, IT'S FROZEN (the computer locks up and MAKES you do this certain type of government report. I can't do ANYTHING ELSE until that report is filled out. But in this scenario, the report is unnecessary because the evil gentleman who wanted to do the transaction in the first place just freaked out and left in the middle of it. So we had to process it anyway because it was locked up, but he wasn't there and it just sucked)

And finally I get to the point where basel can just override it and he comes up, looks at the screen that clearly says SUPERVISOR OVERRIDE

And closes it.

And then closes everything else, not realizing that I CANT JUST CLOSE SHIT OR I WOULD'VE DONE IT ALREADY

So then I have to start over, but I don't know what to do because I'M NEW IDIOT (AND YOU JUST CLEARED OUT ALL THE PRE-FILLED INFORMATION FROM THE SYSTEM SO NOW I HAVE TO DO IT OVER AGAIN BUT YOU CLOSED THE OTHER THING SO NOW I CAN'T FIND IT WTF)

And then it takes TWENTY MORE MINUTES for us to fix it (another teller finally has to step in and do it for me because NO ONE KNOWS THAT THE FUCK THEY'RE DOING)

We don't call Basel over to help again.

And the entire time he's like "is it fixed yet? There's a line."

I hate this job so much

Sosososo much.
--------------------------------

So that was the first installment of "Jess hates her fucking job" storytime. Here's part two, told partially on twitter until I realized that it was being an ASS and so now I'm just going to put it on here and try to edit it out of my loudtwitter thing tomorrow. w/e

ACT TWO:

At lunch my supervisor Irene pulls me aside to comment that she was looking through my paperwork (hereafter referred to as "work") and was noticing that I had a lot of reversals and changes. Like, if I messed up I would fix it. She said that I was making too many small errors.

Errors like printing on the wrong piece of paper and then transferring it (cut/paste) to the right sheet of paper. (Nothing too big, nothing wrong with my cash, nothing serious. Just writing or cutting and pasting because I had validated THE WRONG PIECE OF PAPER).

She said that these errors shouldn't be happening, that I should do everything right the first time and concentrate harder on my transactions.

No lie, she actually said that.

So I try to say something like "Ok, so was what I was doing to fix my errors wrong? Should I not be cutting/pasting? Do you want me to reverse the transaction and do it again?"

Her response is, once again, that I shouldn't be making mistakes. I should be CONCENTRATING HARDER. Ok, w/e, I just smile and nod. I know that validating the wrong piece of paper is really minor and is something that will get a lot better with time.

She says something like "Well, if you look at my work, you won't see any cuttings or pastings or writing down. I do everything right the first time". Ok, yeah, well, you've been here for like five years, right? And I've been here....... a month? Ok, great, yeah. I totally get what you're saying. Never make any mistakes and do everything really fast and basically just be perfect right away. That's going to happen. You just wait on that. I smile and nod and pledge to work harder and concentrate more, because the problem is certainly that I'm not concentrating hard enough because I GRABBED THE WRONG PIECE OF PAPER.

Anyway. THe day passes. I have to do a few more reversals, but I don't care, w/e. At the end of the day my drawer is off by $6.10, which I find immediately. Meaning that I balanced.

My supervisor, however, is off on her own drawer by more than three hundred dollars. There's talk that she may have just given a customer MORE THAN THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS. Who's not concentrating now? I bet if you'd cut and pasted some shit this wouldnt've happened. I laugh inside. I laugh and laugh and laugh and feel vindicated.

THEN she tells me "Oh shit! The vault is also out of balance! Stay late to help me fix it!" Guess what the problem was? Transposed numbers. Someone wasn't concentrating. Maybe writing it down would've helped.

-----------------------------

Ok, so those are my two stories for today, but this shit happens EVERYDAY. Honestly I don't think I've ever hated a job as much as I hate this one. I dread going to work EVERY SINGLE DAY. Even the awful bakers assistant job that I quit was better than this. Everyday is just a constant struggle to wake up and eat as much shit as they feed me and then go home and do it all again the next day.

Next week is going to be absolute hell though. Our weeks start on Saturday, so this week my schedule went something like this :

Saturday: Work
Sunday : off
Monday : work
Tuesday : work
Wednesday : off
Thursday: work
Friday : work

(work saturday, day off during the week)

Unfortunately, next week looks like this :

Saturday : off
Sunday : off
Monday : work
Tuesday : work
Wednesday : work
Thursday : work
Friday: work
AND working next Saturday D:

So because I took this Saturday off to move, I have to work six days in a row next week DDDDD: v. sad foar Jess, cry cry cry

Anyway, the moral of the story is : I HATE MY JOB WHY GOD WHY.

Going to grad school asap.

[music |Short People (on my cd)]

You know, something just occurred to me today that I miss about my previous job. I was able to listen to music all day (and perhaps drive my officemates up the wall). And it was itunes, and it was really easy to make little playlists, fiddle with them for ages, and eventually when I was satisfied, burn a cd.

I say this because I made a cd at home last night and a song I didn't want on there snuck on somehow! Dang me. (the Roger Miller song Dang Me was also on the cd, but I wanted it there).
Read comics! There's some good ones, some not as good ones! True Loves will be new tomorrow! Or after 10pm West Coast Time, I think.

[music |The Olivia Tremor Control - Hilltop Procession (Momentum Gaining)]

I've almost worked my way through my backlog of commissions! For a while there it was pretty hairy, but I only have three more to do now. Thanks to everyone who has been patiently waiting! I've been stuffing the packages with all kinds of extra goodies to make up for the delays.

As soon as I manage to clear my desk of these last few commissions I'll start taking a new batch of commission orders. I'd take more now, but I really need to get these last few finished first, these last few people have been waiting for a long time. I'm working on a number of deadline projects right now, but I've been trying to squeeze in time for commissions whenever possible.

Gradient Question - Adobe Creative Suite [Jul. 23rd, 2008|05:37 pm]

thornwolf
[mood | annoyed]

I am having a helluva time with gradients.

I'm working in Illustrator and InDesign CS3 and I'm trying to do a stable gradient of Pantone/PMS 485 C (Red) and Black, but in Illustrator and InDesign this gradient looks like it goes from black, to gray, to red. Not black to red...but there's a /distinct/ gray in there, like the black craps out and the red's like "hi guys sorry I'm late to the party, I brought chips though"

I checked in Photoshop if a gradient between these colors is possible, and from what I saw it is, but for some reason the gradient between the same colors in the same mode in Photoshop is WAY different than Illustrator and InDesign.

I printed all three versions out (PS, AI, and ID) and they are all wildly different.

Does anyone else have experience with printing PMS colors out of Illustrator and InDesign that can offer some insight on how to print a STABLE gradient between TWO colors without that weird in between color messing it up? I don't want to take this thing to the printer and have it look like gray's trying to be the meat in my 2 color sandwich.

This is so annoying when programs made by the same manufacturer don't play nice in the sandbox >:C
