| About: | This is a community for dogs in training and their handlers. You do not need to be a professional trainer or have much experience. The only requirement is a love for dogs. Feel free to post about your dog's training experiences and progress. Pictures are always welcomed, but please place them behind a cut if they are large. Requests for advice : There are some professional trainers in this community but a majority of the members are dog lovers who might have been in your shoes at one point in time. For serious issues do not take advice over the internet in lieu of seeking professional help in person. Some behavioral problems need to be seen and worked on first hand. Keep in mind that there are many ways and methods to train dogs. Do not take the advice you read here as gold. If you ask a question, be prepared to hear different suggestions. If you are doing something the members deem to be harmful to the dog expect to be called out for it. Training does not happen overnight. It is a life long process and is never finished. Do not expect quick fixes, especially for behavioral issues that have been ongoing. Check here to see if your question has been asked and answered already. Giving and Receiving Advice Be responsible and respectful when giving advice to other dog owners. While there are a lot of different methods out there do not be upset if your advice is called into question. Be prepared to back up your suggestions. If you cannot or will not then do not comment. If you disagree with someone's advice, be courteous and accept that you might simply have to agree to disagree. Certain methods and topics will not be accepted in this community. Such as: advocating harsh physical punishment techniques involving shock collars, alpha rolls, and ear pinching; recommending low quality dog foods (Alpo, Purina, Ol' Roy, Science Diet, to name only a few), and suggesting Cesar Millan as a good example of a qualified dog trainer and expert. Community Rules : 1) Do not delete your post unless it was posted by mistake and only before any comments have been left. If it was posted by mistake and someone has commented, just go back to edit your entry and erase it, editing it to indicate that you posted by mistake. 2) Do not delete comments to your own post or any other member’s post. Doing so erases proof that someone was acting out of bounds. DELETING COMMENTS OR POSTS WILL RESULT IN ONE WARNING FOLLOWED BY BANNING IF THE ISSUE PERSISTS. 3) If you’re not open to hearing advice, don’t ask the question. Take pity on those who have poor bandwidth. 6) Don’t change the font of your post in such a way that it’s difficult to read or annoying (i.e., extra small, light colors, blinking paragraphs, scrolling sentences, etc.) 7) Title your entries. It makes it easy for those reading to immediately know if they could help. 8) Tag your entries. This will make it easier for others with similar training issues to read up on what was done in the past. The easiest way to do it is to go back to EDIT TAGS after your entry has been posted. Please don’t create new tags unless you don’t see your particular topic on the list. 9) Be as detailed as possible in your posts. Be courteous in your responses. Consider above all how you would like to be treated if you had to post about a difficult situation. Attacking the person and being generally unhelpful and insulting isn’t conductive to helping people out. 10) Posts advertising non-dog communities will be automatically deleted. I have owned several different breeds of dogs in the past. My current two dogs are border collies that have successfully undergone all (locally available) levels of obedience training, have received training and competed in agility trials, and have received training and competed in flyball. Though neither of my dogs are registered with a Service Animal provider, they both help me out around the house in the capacity of Hearing Ear Dogs. As well, both of my dogs have been tested and received certification as Therapy Dogs. I'm not a certified trainer or animal behaviorist. I don't pretend to be. I have, however, used a wide variety of training techniques, and discovered that One Size Does Not Fit All. Everyone should approach training with an open mind and be willing to change techniques to suit the personality of their dogs. This community is intended as a forum to discuss different training techniques, as a resource if you're looking for more information, or if you just want to talk about the latest cute thing your pet has done. Woodrunner **** I am a mainly positive-based professional dog trainer working in San Diego. I enjoy helping people communicate better with their dogs and believe that training should be a fun experience for both dog and handler. I’m a huge advocate of clicker training. Feel free to ask me how to get started if you are interested. My dog, Indi, and I are still in the beginning stages of learning agility. I hope to compete with her one day and possibility start to train others once I have a lot of experience under my belt (which means it'll be several years). I am also considering training her for Rally obedience. Once I find a suitable area, I would love to teach her tracking, just for fun. Indi is a work in progress. :) She's not perfect (no living thing is), but we are making headway on some of her quirks.
