The award for best response to anything ever has to go to Steven Moffat on a message board.

Other poster: “he gave us a 1980's retread [referring to Tom MacRae’s ‘Rise of the Cybermen’].”

Steven Moffat: “What are you TALKING ABOUT you mad, mewling fool??

If that episode had shown up in the 80s (or the 70s, or the 60s) we'd all have fainted of joy on the spot! Whump! All of us! Every fan in the country - gurgle, whump, living room floor. Medical experts would've been flown in from all around the world! "My God," they'd have cried, "every geek in Britain is unconscious!! Quick, let's pull their pants over their heads and draw moustaches on them!"

The Elder Statesmen of Fandom, in their vast and mighty Council Chamber (in Mum's bedroom), would
actually have EXPLODED!! Into CLOUDS OF VAPOUR!!! Every breath taken in the whole wide world wide would have contained a measurable quantity of IAN LEVINE!!

And here you are, you lot, and you don't even know you're born. Some of us had to go to school the Monday after the Giant Rat!! No, REALLY! Think about that! Added ten years to my virginity, that did, Giant Rat Monday! Oh, I haven't forgotten!

Kids today!

Sheesh!”

*dies laughing*

Moffat pwns all...but I'm glad it didn't happen the way he posted. Who'd want to breathe Ian Levine?

Hahaha, nice one!! :D

And it could almost be part of a Doctor Who story in itself - something to render all geeks unconscious might be quite a useful ploy for some alien plotting to take over the world! ;)

Ah, somebody mildly criticises the new series and Steven Moffat, being a Big Name Fan, has carte blanche to tear them to shreds...it can only be the Oh Squee forums.

Seriously, he writes some good episodes, but he's a complete pillock.

Mhh... Do you really think so? Hey, he has at least humor and he clearly wasn't all that serious. If you're looking for a thin-skinned producer/writer who can get pissy in an instant, take Damon Lindelof from "Lost". That guy really is a complete pillock. And an embarrassing one as well.

[info]ed_zeppelin

He uses humour to mock the original poster instead of just in a lighthearted way. What about the kids who had to go to school after Professor Zaroff's John Lumic's "how will you do that FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE!?!?!" or the wince-inducing "delete"?

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]thehornedgod

They'll find that all the other kids love Doctor Who too and none of them noticed the stuff you found wince-inducing.

As could be easily applied to the rat. Doctor Who in 1977 was at least as popular as today, if not more.

They should have sacked Baker Major and made Johnny Rotten the fifth Doctor with Siouxie as his companion. Maybe then it would have remained relevant.

No. Sorry, but the stats don't back you up here. While the numbers it did in those days were respectable for the time, 'twas not the dominant force in Saturday night viewing and continual threat to the week's top ten that the current show is.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]ed_zeppelin
2006-05-21 12:40 pm UTC (link)
I'm not talking about statistics - it was still a popular show.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]issi_noho
2006-05-22 08:27 am UTC (link)
Well, yes, just nowhere near as popular as it is now. Trust me, you had much more playground cred if you liked The Sweeney, The Professionals, or any one of those big-rated, macho shows.

Good lord, now I'm actually feeling nostalgic for those long forgotten times of being beaten up for saying I thought Starsky & Hutch was 'fucking dull'. Happy days...

Ah, well... I didn't mind any of this stuff. In fact, I actually loved the cheesiness of the Batman-movie-style Davros. :P But then again, I dig the cheesiness of "Doctor Who", anyway. And it's not like it hasn't intruded the series not before the beginning of 2005. It was always there, gloriously on the screen to be seen for anyone. Even in the Hinchcliffe-years. "You must be the second unbeliever to DIE!!" anyone? :P

Well... and dunno... but I don't find Moffat's posting offensive at all. He was just having a laugh, nothing more. *shrugs*

[info]ed_zeppelin

It was the way he used the cheesiness of the original series as if ROTC wasn't one of the cheesiest of the new. Don't get me wrong, I liked it, but reading that makes me want to tear it apart.

it's my opinion that you're actively choosing to be offended by this, especially as he's lumping himself in with the "geeks" and besides the mad mewling fool bit at the start which i think might be a quote, it's free of ad-hom, and the rest of the comment reads as somewhat self-deprecating to me

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]ed_zeppelin

I get annoyed by Oh Squee in general and the theory of the intrinsic superiority of the new series, like it's a natural law or something.

But he hasn't torn them to shreds. He mainly sent himself (and his generation of fandom) up.

Tongue-in-cheekery, dude -- nothing to get po-faced about.

Oh good grief. He's clearly taking the piss out of everyone involved including himself, not "tearing them to shreds". I don't think that having a sense of humour makes him a pillock. Quite the opposite in fact.

Moffat rules purely for writing an amazingly funny rebuttal without using one single swear word, let alone the actual content of the post. Utterly hilarious.

"My God," they'd have cried, "every geek in Britain is unconscious!! Quick, let's pull their pants over their heads and draw moustaches on them!"

Reminds me of Roald Dahl. He's wonderful.

I honestly don't get it. maybe because I wan't around in the 70's?
or maybe because I've never watched TV in Great Britain??

umm... the episode is good and cheesy, mmmm cheese... I don't know about fainting... I was excited to see any Doctor Who episode when it was on in the 80's, no matter how crappy~
hmmm
I still don't get it.

The original poster is just whinging a bit, fair enough, but Moffat's reply is completely disingenuous. So modern Who is automatically better than old Who because the giant rat looked crap ? That's rubbish and he knows it.
