Over at jesteros, the humor sub-community of westerosorting, they are having a poll to determine who is the sexiest man in Westeros. The final round will almost certainly be between Oberyn & Jaime. And we all know that Oberyn is much sexier than Jaime.
So let's campaign. All of you who are members of that community need to vote Oberyn for Sexiest Man in Westeros because we know that it's true. Part of the mission of this community is to promote love for Oberyn & acknowledgment of his incredible sexiness. To begin with, let's compile a list of reasons why Oberyn is sexier than Jaime, which I will post once the final round begins.
EDIT: And grab some icons to show your support for Oberyn!

When we first meet Oberyn, we learn that he supposedly learned "dark arts" in the Free Cities. Later on, we get a glimpse of what these "dark arts" involve: Oberyn is able to magically thicken manticore venom which normally kills when it reaches the heart in order to draw out Gregor's suffering. There is also the chance that he may have studied magic in his time at the Citadel & that one of his 6 links may be Valyrian steel. I think there's a pretty good chance that he encountered Marwyn while he was there. What I'm curious about is this. If the dark arts Oberyn studied are a form of magic, and it seems like they are, was he actually able to use them? Or was he only able to thicken the venom because of the resurgence of magic? He certainly seemed to know what he was doing and that it would work in that particular instance.

There are two scenes in ASOS that really bother me, so I wanted to know how you all interpret them.
The first one is when Oberyn tells Tyrion that he was as close to Elia as Cersei and Jaime are. I shared Tyrion's thought "Oh dear god I hope not", but since Stannis had sent his letter about their incest to all the great lords of Westeros, I guess Oberyn must have known. I certainly hope he was just saying that to make Tyrion uncomfortable.
The second one bothers me more. It's when Tywin tells Jaime that he wants Cersei to marry Oberyn, and Jaime gets really pissed off and says Oberyn is vile because he sleeps with boys. I know he must have been insanely jealous at the thought of someone else sharing Cersei's bed, but still, he did use the word "boys" instead of "men" and seemed really outraged, so...
I know how blasphemous my post sounds, especially in here, but I'd really want to hear other people's opinions on this .

...and we have a few new members who have yet to really make themselves known.
Why do you love Oberyn?
Is it his sexiness? His snarkiness? His fighting skillz? His devotion to family? The fact that he's a great father?
My love of Oberyn began when I saw artwork of him fighting Gregor. I hadn't even gotten to ASoS yet, but the thought of someone fighting Gregor made me insanely happy. That's where it all began. His sexiness & his daddy skillz are additional turn-ons. I just love the fact that he's one of the best dads in the series.

Oberyn's Relationship with Doran
Oberyn & Doran are very different people. Doran is cautious and patient while Oberyn is tempermental and hotheaded. Yet it is quite clear from canon that they do in fact respect and love each other.
Doran's feelings on Oberyn are quite clear. We know that Doran wanted nothing more than a little brother when he was a child. He is absolutely devastated by Oberyn's death. Doran loved his brother greatly. He trusted Oberyn enough to put him in charge of Sunspear and let him go to KL. He even says to Arianne that Oberyn is "with him" whenever he closes his eyes.
Oberyn's feelings on Doran are less obvious, but we know that he respected Doran. He obeys him. Also, Nym mentions that if Doran had been killed by the Lannisters, Oberyn would've immediately declared war on them. I think we can probably say that he loved Doran as well as respected him. Oberyn wouldn't respect just anyone.
This is of course not to say that they didn't drive each other crazy on occasion. Or all the time.

One of the random things I love about Oberyn is the little conversation he has with Tyrion on the morning of Joffrey and Margaery's wedding about Lives of Four Kings. He deliberately starts a debate that will engage Tyrion's intellect and distract from his wounded pride, which in itself is not merely the decent thing to do but shows he had the perspicacity to appreciate Tyrion's intellect in the first place, unlike many characters in the books.
Oberyn = <3.

| The Oberyn Shipping Thread |

| Queen- Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy |
| oberyn, shipping |
|
Ah yes. Oberyn shipping. We've had a thread about this before, a while back. But since it is Oberyn Appreciation Month & Oberyn shipping is such a fascinating topic, we're having another discussion.
Oberyn is in a unique position in regards to shipping. Given his bisexuality & sexual openess, he can be shipped with many characters plausibly.
Canonically, We have Oberyn/Ellaria. Oberyn/Cersei was proposed in canon & could've happened & Oberyn/Willas is semi-canon. These are the 3 big Oberyn ships..
Oberyn/Ellaria Oberyn & Ellaria were made for each other. They have 4 children together. It is clear that they love each other very much. It should also be noted that they, aside from Ned & Catelyn, are the only happy, loving, long-term couple in the series. Oberyn meets Ellaria about a year or so after Elia's death. It seems to me that he may have latched onto her in a similar way he had to Elia. We are sometimes attracted to people who remind us of our loved ones, after all. He & Ellaria share the same views on sex & sexuality which allow them to have an open, healthy relationship. Sure, they enjoy having threesomes & whatnot. But they care deeply for each other.
Oberyn/Cersei He nearly had to marry Cersei. Fortunately that plan feel through. However, it is interesting to consider what might've happened if Tywin had accepted the Martells' offer & sent Cersei to Dorne. She might not've become the huge bitch we know today & she & Oberyn might've had a decent marriage. The idea of marrying Cersei comes up again in ASoS. In response to this, Oberyn has made it quite clear that he'd rather have scorpions in his bed than Cersei. Ellaria thinks he should marry her, though.
Oberyn/Willas Yeah, so it's not officially canon. But there's a good case for this ship. Oberyn accidentally cripples Willas. He feels bad about it & sends his maester to see to Willas. Afterwards, Oberyn & Willas become pen pals. Isn't it a bit strange that Willas would carry on friendly correspondance with the man who crippled him? And isn't it interesting that Willas isn't married? He's the Heir of Highgarden & he's just got a bad leg. He's not deformed. And seducing the son of his enemy is exactly the sort of thing that Oberyn would do. We're supposed to meet Willas at some point, so hopefully he'll confirm this ship as canon!
Then there are various other Oberyn ships that could be made to work: Oberyn/Renly, Oberyn/Daemon Sand, Oberyn/Sandor (hey! They both hate Gregor!), Oberyn/Arthur Dayne.
And another question: Mama Martell seemed adamant on marrying all her children off to non-Dornish people. How did Oberyn manage to stay Dorne's most elligible bachelor his entire life? Why isn't he married?

Some more info about Oberyn that wouldn't fit in the last post. Am I an obsessive fangirl? Of course. But it's fun.

Today is Nov. 1, and so Oberyn Appreciation Month has officially begun. Not that every month isn't Oberyn Appreciation Month on dmo, but hey! Same deal as Arianne Appreciation Month.

And for this week's Arianne topic, we have Arianne's relationship with Oberyn.
We know from canon that Arianne was quite close to her uncle. They seem to have become even closer after Arianne's estrangement from Doran. It seems as if Arianne were almost a 9th Sand Snake. She & Tyene were best friends & practically inseparable. She went along with Tyene when she did things with her father, such as the trip to the desert for instance.
It seems likely that Arianne might've learned how to fight with a knife from Oberyn. I doubt he'd have any qualms about teaching her, especially after Elia's death. I wonder if she learned anything about poison from him too.
Arianne also has some very strange feelings towards Oberyn. She seems to wish he was her father, but also fantasizes about him. It's an almost Electra complex, only with the uncle instead of the father due to Arianne's feelings about Doran.
One thing I've wondered about regarding Arianne's relationship with Oberyn is if she ever asked him about Doran's letter. She seemed to be so close to him that you'd think she might confront him with her fears about her father. Of course, Oberyn wouldn't have been able to tell her anything if she had asked him. One moment that I find interesting in their relationship is when Oberyn goes to intercept Arianne as she tries to go meet Willas and brings her back to Sunspear. I'd love to know what the trip back must've been like (HINT HINT fic writers! Plotbunny for sale!)
Slightly different subject, but our community will be celebrating its 1 year anniversary on Sept. 19, which also happens to be Talk Like a Pirate Day. I will try to finish one of my WIPs by that time. If that doesn't happen, I will post a drabble of some sort to celebrate our community anniversary. I heartily encourage all to post in order to celebrate this day!

Do you have a favorite Oberyn moment? It can be something that we see him do or something that's only mentioned, such as his poisoning of Lord Yronwood.

Last week, fontenar & I were discussing the four older Sand Snakes & their mothers. We wondered what the mothers were like & when/how Oberyn claimed them. So here are our ideas:

This is a do_me community & it is Valentine's Day so today we can gush, obsess, fantasize, write Valentines to or from Oberyn, & be completely fangirly. I know I promised smutfic today, but it's not done yet & I don't know if it'll be done for tonight. Anyway...
I'd totally give Oberyn myself for Valentine's Day. Maybe I'd buy him some chocolate too. I wonder if they have chocolate in Dorne. I wouldn't mind if he wanted to bring Ellaria, although I'm strictly dickly. I've been obsessed with my share of fictional characters over the years, but gods, Oberyn blows them away. He is such an incredibly awesome man. He's the whole package. Sexy, intelligent, a great warrior, devoted to his family...and who doesn't love the way he raised his daughters? *drools. fantasizes*

Here's a question for the fanboys.
Oberyn probably fantasized about killing Robert himself after Elia's death. If they actually had met up, who do you think would've won?
Robert w/ his hammer vs. Oberyn w/ his poisoned sword/spear of righteous anger. Both of them in their prime. Who would win?

Now if you excuse me, I need a little...personal time.

And now for something completely pointless & irrelevant, but related to the holiday season...
What would you get Oberyn for Christmas?
Personally, I'd get him & Ellaria a bunch of interesting sex toys.
And now the other thing...
I think it would be interesting to make & maintain ljs for the various Martells. I've seen this done before for characters & I think our favorite Dornish family has unlimited possibilities. Just imagine. We could have Oberyn (of course), Doran, Arianne, Ellaria, a few Sand Snakes...
