Ted Nasmith has drawn a gorgeous pic of Sunspear for the upcoming world book. It's got just the right amount of Middle Eastern feel to it. I approve!

When we first meet Oberyn, we learn that he supposedly learned "dark arts" in the Free Cities. Later on, we get a glimpse of what these "dark arts" involve: Oberyn is able to magically thicken manticore venom which normally kills when it reaches the heart in order to draw out Gregor's suffering. There is also the chance that he may have studied magic in his time at the Citadel & that one of his 6 links may be Valyrian steel. I think there's a pretty good chance that he encountered Marwyn while he was there.

What I'm curious about is this. If the dark arts Oberyn studied are a form of magic, and it seems like they are, was he actually able to use them? Or was he only able to thicken the venom because of the resurgence of magic? He certainly seemed to know what he was doing and that it would work in that particular instance.

Join [info]westerosorting and find out what great house you belong in.

It would be kinda awesome if we were all sorted as Martells.

EDIT: Also, I've created a Facebook group called "Fuck this... I'm going to Dorne" for any Dorne fans who may have felt that way at one time or another. I certainly have.

I got my match on

[info]asoiaf_stamp& it is none other than Oberyn. As if there was any doubt.

I wonder how many of us who are members of that community will actually get matched with Oberyn or another Martell. This will be the official thread where you can share your match results if you choose.

A friending meme appeared a short while ago on fanmoot. I've noticed that we've gotten some new members here recently. Our numbers are now over 40. Yay. I think having our own friending meme might be a nice way to connect with each other and meet new members or members who mostly lurk. I've taken the one from fanmoot & added some questions specific to this community.

In a previous post, we all seemed to agree that "Alleras" is most probably Sarella.  I'm led to wonder about the real reactions of the rest of her family to her desire to study at the Citadel.

Doran refers to her being in Oldtown and "playing a game".  We never get his POV (in my opinion, Doran, like Littlefinger and Varys, is someone best viewed from outside due to all the machinations).  We don't get told about his tone of voice when he refers to Sarella as "playing" - presumably playing at becoming a female maester.  He could be using "playing" as anything from dismissive to indulgent to appreciative.

We see in Arianne's POV that Oberyn indulged Sarella's taste for learning as a child.  He encouraged all his daughters to pursue their particular interests into adulthood, and one would presume that he would have backed Sarella in her desire to study at the Citadel.  With the evidence we have of Oberyn's character, I strongly doubt that the danger of the enterprise would have altered his opinion.

Arianne's POV notably avoids any mention of Sarella's activities - "notably" because Nym appears to know about it, and Doran implies that said knowledge should pass quite easily to Arianne with Tyene as the conduit.  This is likely an instance of a character not thinking about something due to GRRM's desire to occlude it.  Nym certainly appears quite matter-of-fact about Sarella's "love" for Oldtown.

Today is the first day of Sarella Appreciation Month, as per the results of our poll. Her bio isn't finished yet, so we'll start out with some discussion.

Do you believe that Sarella is Alleras? I think this is commonly accepted here on dmo, but I figured it's a good place to start.

I just come across someone saying Martin had hinted that there would be man-on-man action in ADWD... The same person also said maybe Quentyn would be involved (but that was pure speculation). I thought it would be more interesting if it was a PoV from a guy who remembered a night shared with Oberyn, but what are the odds ?? Darkstar maybe ?? So what do you think ? Who might it be ?

I think we had this topic before, but I'm bringing it up again due to the recent discussion about whether Doran is or isn't a knight.

We know that he served the Gargalens as a squire at Salt Shore. So we can assume that he did eventually become a knight. Although, with his general dislike of war, it's difficult to imagine Doran with weapons.

In the infamous letter, he tells Quentyn that he should do everything the maester & master-at-arms ask him to do because, "a ruler must be strong of mind & body." He seems to place an equal importance on weapons training as on education.

So what do all of you think about Doran's fighting abilities, or lack thereof? [info]fontenar& I had a conversation once a while ago where we decided that we could see Doran as having been good with knives. I'm sure he probably learned how to use a sword, spear, and bow too.

How do you all pronounce "Tyene"?

I can think of three ways to do it:

1.  Three syllables - the way I pronounce it: "Tie-ee-nee", akin to the Greek goddess "Athene".

2.  Two syllables version 1 - "Tie-een".

3.  Two syllables version 2 - "Tie-enne".

4.  Something I haven't thought of - ??

I can't believe we haven't discussed this aspect of Doran yet. It's a huge part of who he is. So here we are, at the end of Doran Appreciation Month.

Doran is a very different leader from many of the lords we see in Westeros. He seems to care deeply for his people and takes his responsibility to them very seriously. We've seen many other lords put their families and family issues before the well being of their people. Doran does exactly the opposite. Oh, he wants his revenge, but he takes steps to ensure that the war to remove the Lannisters will be as bloodless for Dorne as possible.

Doran is also a very skilled player of the Game. He's a skilled actor and liar. He's extremely cunning. Just look at the scene in AFFC where he plays Arys Oakheart like a harp. And we know he played Jon Arryn as well when he visited Sunspear after the rebellion. Doran has constructed an entire fake persona about himself, one that even his own daughter believes. I put him right up there w/ LF & Varys in terms of skilled players.

How do you feel about Doran as a prince? Do you think he's a good leader?

Doran is the only lord in Westeros who I'd have no problem with serving.

From Tower of the Hand, courtesy of the Bantam Dell website:

"In the aftermath of a colossal battle, the future of the Seven Kingdoms hangs in the balance once again-beset by newly emerging threats from every direction. In the east, Daenerys Targaryen, the last scion of House Targaryen, rules with her three dragons as queen of a city built on dust and death. But Daenerys has three times three thousand enemies, and many have set out to find her. Yet, as they gather, one young man embarks upon his own quest for the queen, with an entirely different goal in mind.

To the north lies the mammoth wall of ice and stone-a structure only as strong as those guarding it. There, Jon Snow, 998th Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, will face his greatest challenge yet. For he has powerful foes, not only within the Watch, but also beyond, in the land of the creatures of ice.

And from all corners, bitter conflicts soon re-ignite, intimate betrayals are perpetrated, and a grand cast of outlaws and priests, soldiers and skinchangers, nobles and slaves, will face seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Some will fail, others will grow in the strength of darkness. But in a time of rising restlessness, the tides of destiny and politics will lead inevitably to the greatest dance of all... (bolding mine)"

Could the bolded sentence possibly be referring to Quentyn? It seems like it. I can't wait to meet him!

Somewhere in canon it states that Quentyn Martell was knighted by Lord Yronwood - specifically opposing this to the option of him having been knighted by his uncle Oberyn.  The thing that strikes me about that passage is that it does not imply that Doran might possibly have knighted him if Yronwood did not.

AFFC establishes that Doran was a squire at the time that Elia and Oberyn were born.  Did his gout first surface in his teens - preventing him from being knighted?  Or is it simply that it is improper for a father to knight his son, no matter if the father is the ruling Prince of the area?

There are two scenes in ASOS that really bother me, so I wanted to know how you all interpret them.

The first one is when Oberyn tells Tyrion that he was as close to Elia as Cersei and Jaime are. I shared Tyrion's thought "Oh dear god I hope not", but since Stannis had sent his letter about their incest to all the great lords of  Westeros, I guess Oberyn must have known. I certainly hope he was just saying that to make Tyrion uncomfortable.

The second one bothers me more. It's when Tywin tells Jaime that he wants Cersei to marry Oberyn, and Jaime gets really pissed off and says Oberyn is vile because he sleeps with boys. I know he must have been insanely jealous at the thought of someone else sharing Cersei's bed, but still, he did use the word "boys" instead of "men" and seemed really outraged, so...

I know how blasphemous my post sounds, especially in here, but I'd really want to hear other people's opinions on this .
