Community Info

DN_Challenge is a livejournal-based Death Note fanfic challenge community. A challenge theme is posted every couple of weeks, and community members may submit fics on the challenge theme into the contest for voting. Winners will recieve a graphic they can display on their userinfo (or whereever) for their achievement. The real purpose of the comm, however, is not so much the winning as the taking part. There isn't nearly enough fic in the DN fandom these days, and hopefully the competitive spirit and challenge deadline will encourage some authors (like myself, for example) to get their butts in gear.

You will need to join the community in order to see any of the fics, and friend the comm in order for them to appear on your flist, but there is no obligation on members of the group to submit fic or take part in the contests.

Please note that this community contains adult content, and may not be suitable for persons under the age of eighteen.

Please use it. Additionally, there are a number of guidelines to bear in mind when posting:

1. All posts must be flocked.

2. No character bashing fics. There is a difference between a fic that slights a character for the purposes of the plot and a fic with the sole purpose of bashing. The discretion rests with the moderator.

3. The appropriate tags must be used (see the 'tags' section for more information). You may be more free with your info in the character/pairings line of the header, but keep the tags to a minimum.

4. No flaming. Constructive criticism is allowed, of course, but none of this "omg yur pairing iz SO L4M3" nonsense or you'll be on your ear faster than you can say 'shinigami'.

5. No spamming. This means no icons, no community promos, no "OMG guess what I just found" posts etc. There are other places for this, and we're all sick of seeing the same entry twice anyway.

6. No 'l33t' speak, no scrolling or flashing text, no ridiculous fonts, and for the love of god, have someone beta read before you post. Run spell check, at the very least.

7. All fics behind an lj-cut, please. (To do this, type <lj-cut text="YOUR TEXT HERE"> after the header, and then </lj-cut> at the end. Simple, no?)

CHALLENGE ENTRY RULES

1. Fics may be entered into only ONE category for voting (it may fall into multiple categories, but you have to choose one category for being voted on).

2. Fics may be het, yaoi, yuri, or a combination of the three.

3. Please stick to the official naming conventions for challenge entries. (no matter how much you hate them).

4. All challenge entries must be new, i.e., written specifically for the challenge, and/or not posted elsewhere first (not even your own journal).

5. Challenge entries must be ONLY be posted here until the challenge has ended.

6. All challenge entries must meet the minimum word count requirement for that particular requirement.

7. All challenge entries must address the topic/requirements of that challenge (Duh).

8. Multi-part fics are encouraged, but must be complete in order to qualify for the challenge.

TAGS

All fics must be posted with tags to help them be found later. These are:

- Your penname
- The pairing(s)/main character(s)
- The rating [G, PG, R, NC-17]

Purely for the sake of keeping fics with the same pairing together, and tags to a minimum, please list them as follows (regardless of seme/uke issues):

Light/L, Mello/Near, Mello/Matt, Light/Misa, L/Mello, L/Near, L/Misa, Light/Mikami, Other Pairing.

I'm aware there are scads more potential pairings available, but if I tried to list them all there would be about 75 tags, and no one would be able to find anything. Besides, those are the only ones I'm familiar with as being in any way common.

As for characters:

Light, L, Mello, Near, Mikami, Misa, Other Character.

Again, I am aware there are lots of other characters-- too many to list. If I should discover at a later stage that any other character has a sufficient volume of fic to merit their own section, I will add one. For now, this will have to do.

VOTING RULES

Each community member will be allowed one vote per category per challenge. Voting will happen once the challenge has closed and and all fics are in. Voting will be done by posting votes to a screened voting post specific to the challenge in which you will vote for your chosen story in each category.

As to the categories themselves... I've given it a lot of thought, and basically it comes down to this: lump all fics into a single category and the winning story is pretty much going to be Light/L every time, because as a pairing, it is greatly more popular than any other pairing. However, include categories for every possible pairing and there probably won't be even a single entry for all categories every challenge. So, what I've decided is this:

Light/L, Mello/Near, Other, Mixed, and Gen.

The first two are obvious, the third is for pairing stories that don't fit into either of the other two, the fourth for multi-pairing stories, and the last is for non-pairing stories.

It's not perfect, but it'll have to do.

Incidentally, if you would like to write a fic based on the challenge prompt, but don't want to enter into the competition, please feel free to post it here anyway, just specify at the beginning that you're not entering into the competition. You can also post it simultaneously on your own journal if this is the case.
