Men Behind the Sun (1988)
Although there have been a few sequels and remakes, the original Men Behind The Sun is still pretty memorable. The copy I watched was on an old VHS tape, and the transfer from the original film was pretty grainy - all of which combined to give this depressing film about Japanese war atrocities the look of a documentary. There isn't much of a plot to Men Behind The Sun - it largely concerns itself with the inhumane experiments conducted in Japanese prison camps during world war two. The film could easily have been just another forgettable piece of so-called shock cinema, but instead it goes over the edge into the realm of the truly screwed up. Martyrs -
I'm not sure if Martyrs is disturbing - or if it is just hard to watch. The plot (without spoilers) involves a shadowy organization who kidnaps and tortures women. We learn why at the end of the movie, and the payoff is more interesting and original than anything Hollywood has come up with recently. 90% of the film is footage of women being tortured, and this isn't fancy SAW style torture, this is a much realistic brutality. I've watched thousands of horror films and there isn't much that really bothers me like the violence in Martyrs does. This film really pushes the envelope and it does so in a way which is challenging, and hard to forget. I especially liked how grim it was - there was no comedy relief, no trite pop-culture references, and none of those annoying little things that pull you out of the movie. Instead the movie drags you down with it into a world of pain, suffering and vengeance. I would certainly say it is the most memorable horror film I've seen in ages - even though I kind of wish that I could forget it. | 10:41 pm [lachupacabra]

[REC]2 INSANE TRAILER! In case you have been hiding under rocks in deep caves on Mars, this [REC]2, the sequel to the ever-loving pee-your-pants festival known as [REC] (which will be seeing it's US release on DVD in July 2009). I personally consider this to be one of those zombie-type films that gives you the willies until the cows come home. Don't believe me? Watch this trailer then watch the original then tell me it's not one of the best horror films around right now. P.S. - Quarantine was the US remake of it and dear GOD it sucked compared to the original. | | Friday, May 22nd, 2009 | 8:40 pm [dyingnight]

Musings on "The War Zone" and a preview of "Antichrist"
I come bearing two films, neither of which are among the 116 memories through which I just scrolled! The first is from 1999, and I finally saw it a week ago. I'm still bothered by it. I'll re-post here some of what I put in my own LJ the day after I watched it; PLEASE BEWARE THE SPOILERS!!! I have them clearly marked, mind you, so it'll be easy to scroll past if you're anti-spoiler. It's just a difficult film to explain without a lot of these plot points. Forgive me for being so...verbose! This is why LJ cuts are our friend. THE WAR ZONE (1999)The movie is called "The War Zone", directed by Tim Roth and starring Ray Winstone and Tilda Swinton. It's based on a novel that, by all accounts, is actually more horrifying than the film, though I really have no idea how that's possible.
( An overview with very basic plot points + some unnecessary, but possibly interesting to fellow fans, blather about 'Irréversible' and 'BROKEN' )
( Two compelling bits of IMDb trivia about 'The War Zone' )
( MAJOR SPOILERS - a graphic recount of several disturbing scenes )
I don't really know how to make these images leave my brain. I've already seen another movie in the meantime, have been out with a friend, have conversed about fluff, and yet my ears are still ringing with the sounds from that bunker.
I'll leave it with a completely safe YouTube clip of the review Roger Ebert gave back in 1999, when it first came out. Then you can decide for yourselves if you would ever be willing to experience this film, for the sake of seeing an excellently made movie, and in spite of it being something you may never be able to wish away.
( Roger Ebert's video review of 'The WarZone' )
ANTICHRIST (2009)
I can't speak to how disturbing this one is, as it's not been released to the general public just yet. It was featured at Cannes in the past couple of weeks, and it's getting press that says things like this:
( ...deeply controversial, frighteningly bloody, inhumanly evil... )
I shan't post any more of that review, because apparently it gives away every plot device and twist. But I gather there are a lot of women's groups who are trying to get this banned.
All I have left to offer for that one thus far is the HD trailer and the link to its IMDb page (beware spoilers there, too - the message boards are full of 'em).
( THE ANTICHRIST - Lars von Trier - new trailer )
So perhaps we'll have one more nasty film to look forward to, hmm?
Anyone else here find themselves surprised at their reaction to The War Zone when few other "disturbing" movies affect you? If anyone's read the book, do you agree that it's actually MORE disturbing than the film?? (I'm the creator of disturbingbooks, so that's of interest to me!)
Edited to add: More Antichrist stuff is available at http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/16275, including several clips from the film (rather than just the trailer). Also worth mentioning: If you're spoiler-happy, I'll post the link to the whole review mentioned above (and one from Roger Ebert, to balance out the one I put up for The War Zone!), so go forth and see what could possibly make so many reporters leave a screening crying.
- "Lars von Trier Shocked The Entire World"
- Roger Ebert's review - "Even now already is it in the world" ("It is the first screening of Lars von Trier's Antichrist, and we are ready for anything. We'd better be. Von Trier's film goes beyond malevolence into the monstrous. Never before have a man and woman inflicted more pain upon each other in a movie. We looked in disbelief. There were piteous groans. Sometimes a voice would cry out, 'No!' At certain moments there was nervous laughter. When it was all over, we staggered up the aisles.")

Here we go again...with a twist 9:41 PM 5/18/09 · I kinda mentioned this in a little blurb on my journal but the main reason I rented this, cuz I didn't think it was going to be any good, was to see if it continued to balance things out. This series was spawned from a Japanese horror classic called Ju·On: The Grudge that was hands down one of the scariest things I'd ever seen. The Grudge & The Grudge 2 tell the same story it does in two parts... ... Ju·On was really fucking long! There's a Ju·On 2 and I wanted to know if The Grudge 3 was the same story that was, or had a lot of elements from it. After having watched it, and what I remember from the 2nd in the Japanese part of the series, I'd have to say that would be a no. What I didn't expect was for the 3rd Grudge to be so fucking good! ( spooky stuff between the cracks )This movie was un·fucking·believably excellent! Current Mood: intimidatedCurrent Music: Charm School | 2:35 pm [bomb_the_cherry]

Ken Park
Was anyone else really disappointed by this film? I'd wanted to watch it for a long time, and after a fruitless search a few months ago finally found somewhere yesterday that has it up. It was pretty boring, I didn't empathise with any of the characters, hated the open ending and was irritated by the porn-for-porn's-sake. I'm guessing if I was that unimpressed I should give Kids a miss? Any recommendations of vaguely similar but better films to see? (I've seen Mysterious Skin and loved that, if that helps any.) EDIT - if anyone is interested, you can watch it here - http://stagevu.com/video/vlaqseztckmx | | Wednesday, May 13th, 2009 | 5:17 pm [fearnet]

I know this is posted in the memories but it's from wayyy back in 2003. Does anyone know where I can get a copy of Chicken Hawk, the movie about the North American Man/Boy Love Association? I remember constantly looking for it on Ebay a few years ago but it never came up. Any help would be so appreciated! | | Monday, May 4th, 2009 | 3:17 pm [saori1f]

Documentary: Real Dolls and The Men Who Love Them vodpod.com/watch/213865-nsfw-documentary-real-dolls-and-the-men-who-love-themVery little is more disturbing than men who make excuses for the reasons they can't get women, and instead have sex and take care of rubber dolls who look and feel like women. I do quite pity the British guy, but the first guy, and Gordon especially...the amount of money they spend on these dolls could very easily go to bettering themselves with personal care products, therapy(lots of therapy), and even, like the Texas man, the internet or dating groups. The people who are in the business of making these dolls need some help, as well. Yea, whatever. The men are lonely. Giving them these dolls will not help in the long run. Thankfully most of them stay inside, and far away from the rest of us real women. Ugh, people >.< Current Mood: wtf.Current Music: David Bowie-Oh! Faces of Death 1 & Traces of Death 1
I checked the memories for these two, but only found Faces of Death 2 and nothing for Traces. I wasn't sure if they'd be allowed, since they're more "shockumentaries" then actual films. But oh well! To start off, Faces is pretty laughable. If the first one is supposed to be the most shocking, then the ones that come after it must be horrible. There is little gore and death in it, and most of the footage is fake. And I mean like, noticeably fake. The scene with the alligator? Yeah. Not to mention it tries to be pseudo-philosophical, what with the strange montage of trash and litter while the narrator goes off on how we need to take care of the environment or something. What? It was entertaining I suppose, but if you want real gore then look elsewhere. Next is Traces! I'm not sure if I'm qualified to give a valid review of this, since I couldn't even finish it. That should give you an idea of the content. It's pretty much the same idea of Faces, but with legit footage and little narration. What really bothered me about it was the editing (of all things). One moment you're watching a dog attacking a lady then BAM! fucked up looking eyeballs. It's really jarring, but I guess that's the point, haha. The narration is kinda eh. It's basically just some guy making crude jokes about what's going on, but usually it's just music. If you need a fix of gorey fun, then this is a better option than Faces. Maybe I'll suck it up and finish it one day. What do you guys think about these movies? |
