We've extended the early bird booking discount until the end of June and the full list of rates and when they change is on the site. The entire Concom are working hard to put together a really fantastic event and we fully expect the website to fill up with information over the next few weeks. We'll also be announcing our other guests and giving you plenty to get excited about.

As a reminder, the convention will be taking place in the Hilton Birmingham Metropole from the 27th - 30th August 2010 and we look forward to seeing you there.

Announcing the 2009 Irish DiscWorld Convention! [Jan. 11th, 2009|03:23 pm]

www.idwcon.org

Friday 6th November - Monday 9th November 2009
The Falls Hotel, Ennistymon, Co. Clare, Ireland

Following a serious bout of post-Convention enthusiasm last August, we are pleased to announce that the first ever DiscWorld COnvention in Ireland will be held in November 2009, in a very nice hotel in County Clare.

We have invited Bernard Pearson, Colin Smythe, Ian Stewart & Jack Cohen, Diane Duane and Peter Morwood to be Guests, with Sir Terry Pratchett OBE and Stephen Briggs as Guests of Honour. Bernard Pearson and Jack Cohen have confirmed that they will be attending, as has Sir Terry (health permitting).

The website is now online, where you can find out about the hotel, some of the events, and there are also forums available for discussing things. (Don't worry about the colour, it' being seen to.)

Membership will be open from February, in various varieties.

We intend to make this the biggest, best and most fun DiscWorld event in Ireland, so come along and join us for the best weekend you'll have in November!

Given that there is still no details about the general release of the 2008 Discworld Double-Anniversary DVD, will the jump in price on the 1st of December (as mentioned here) be postponed?

2008 Discworld Double-anniversary DVD [Nov. 9th, 2008|06:02 pm]

_hypatia_
At the opening ceremony of the 2008 Discworld Convention, we announced the making of a DVD to celebrate the double anniversary of 25 years of Discworld books and 60 years of Terry Pratchett. The DVD contains in-depth interviews with key figures in the Discworld Universe (e.g.
Stephen Briggs, Bernard Pearson) as well as recordings from the Convention itself, including Terry's opening ceremony speech and the "Disc Is Your World". All profits from the sale of the DVD will go to the Alzheimer's Research Trust.

You can see a trailer for the DVD here:

<http://uk.youtube.com/user/dwcon2008>

or here at the mail list files area:

<http://dwcon_org_2008.googlegroups.com/web/dvd_taster_v2.mp4>

We took over 160 pre-orders for the DVD from our members at the Convention and will shortly be opening that opportunity to the general public. This will be at the same price of £10 plus postage and packing, until 1st December 2008, at which point the price will rise to £15 (inclusive of P&P).

In the original announcement, we planned for a release date in October. Unfortunately, technical problems with sound on some of the tapes from the Convention mean that editing is only just finishing and that release date has had to slip. We have now set a new release date of 8th December 2008.

More details about how to buy a copy of the DVD will go up on the website shortly.

Don't let my flame go out! [Oct. 26th, 2008|05:07 pm]

Dennis the dragon from the Discworld Convention 2008 has been rescued once more from the clutches of those who don't care for him and can now be found on ebay.

For those that aren't sure who Dennis was; he was the 90cmx70cm plaster dragon that greeted the Gala Dinner attendees at the entrance to the hall.

He also made a guest appearance in the closing ceremony having a corset draped over his snout!

He's being auctioned off and the money raised will be going to the Alzheimer's Research Trust.

The link for the auction is http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Discworld-Convention-2008-Dragon-prop-CHARITY_W0QQitemZ300268418957QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item300268418957&_trkparms=72%3A1301|39%3A1|66%3A2|65%3A12|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 and please do go and have a look even if you decide not to bid.

Give Dennis a good home and raise more money for a good cause!

Informal Hogswatch Barbecue - AFP/DWCon08 [Oct. 1st, 2008|03:39 pm]

[music |Peter Cincotti - St. Louis Blues]

(Also posted on my own LJ.)

Long story short: the Con ended much too quickly, people getting withdrawal, and I like barbecue.

After some back-and-forth here on the DWCon 08 LJ community1 and on AFP2, here's what I've come up with:

WHO: Perhaps a dozen or so Discworld fans

WHAT: Hogswatch barbecue and bonfire weekend

DWCon08NostalgiaMeetHogswatchMicroCon Update [Sep. 17th, 2008|03:45 pm]

[mood | optimistic]
[music |Little Feat - Dixie Chicken]

You may remember a few weeks ago I mentioned the idea of a sort of micro-con to assuage our post-Con withdrawal symptoms. Well, I've been looking into it (I still have a few more hotels to look at, see if I can find better prices or timings, but this is the best option so far), and here's the suggestion as it stands.

A micro-con, rather like an extended AFPmeet, in the more civilised wilds of Scotland. With Hogswatch dinner.

Remember, this is entirely theoretical at this stage; nothing is set in stone, and of course if there's not enough interest it won't happen at all. If you have any suggestions, please leave a comment and I'll bear it in mind in planning.

More details... )

Anyway, there you go. It's all open for adjustments, suggestions, ideas... any thoughts? Any interest? I'd like to get a dozen interested, and who knows, maybe this'll become a regular thing?

Irish DW Convention October 2009 [Sep. 16th, 2008|02:57 pm]

sabremeister
Having been to the UK International Convention 2008 it was decided that there should be an Irish equivalent. As in it was suggested to some Irish people and they took it seriously.

We have an LJ community ([info]idwcon_2009) and a Facebook page, and we know it's going to be in late October 2009 in Co. Clare (so that anybody coming over from Britain can fly into Shannon and already be close to the venue).

So head on over to those pages and have a look, and tell people, and get ready for plenty more news over the coming months.

Post Con meet up in London [Sep. 10th, 2008|01:56 pm]

hermi_nomi
Also posted at Facebooks Discworld Convention 2008 and 2010 group.

How many people would be interested in meeting up in London to reminise about DWCon 2008, to share experiences and ideas for future conventions and events?

I'm not talking about anything like a planned festival atmosphere (unless someone wants to undertake the responsibility)...no weekends or anything, just that, you know ~ if you're in the London area, you know, for the weekend or for work, then how do you fancy meeting up with fellow convention virgins/newbies/old-hands for a coffee and perhaps a wander around the National Gallery or something of that very cheap kidney?

Just a day spent with fellow like-minded nutters to plan world domination or what ever topic takes your fancy. I was originally thinking that this could be do-able this year while people are still feeling gregarious...sometime between now and christmas. Please comment if you are interested and a date can be arranged from there.

DVD announced at the Convention [Sep. 7th, 2008|09:45 am]

itsbruce
In the opening ceremony of the Convention, we announced the sale of a special anniversary DVD, all the profits from which will go to Alzheimer's research. The content on the DVD will include:

  • The Disc is Your World item from the Convention (a This-is-your-life style interview with Terry and various guests)
  • An interview with Stephen Briggs
  • An interview with Colin Smythe
  • An interview with Bernard Pearson
  • An interview with Trevor Truran
  • Assorted bonus material

Some of this content is still being compiled and edited, so the DVD will not be available until early October. It was possible to order the DVD at the Convention (over 160 copies already ordered) and we will be making it available for order online soon; an announcement should go up here and on the official website in the coming week, along with some previews of the content.

Treatment for DWCon Withdrawal [Sep. 6th, 2008|10:28 am]

awmperry
[mood |Scheming]
[music |Chantz - Uptight (Everything's Alright)]

A few of us - mainly me and the Glingle Feegle at this stage - have been pondering a few ideas for easing the traditional post-Con withdrawal symptoms. There's the Wincanton thing, of course, but not everyone can get there (I certainly can't), which at least means there are people left over for other things...

It's all up in the air at the moment - really just a "wouldn't it be fun if" scheme for now - but basically we were thinking of a sort of DWCon08NostalgiaMeetMicroCon thing. Nothing of the scale or ambition of a real Con, of course, really just getting some fun people in one place for the weekend.

The current ideas basically involve finding a suitable weekend - perhaps a three-day weekend if people are sufficiently interested, but probably not - and getting a few people (perhaps a couple of dozen, or however many are interested, but not too many) up to Galloway. Oh, alright, it doesn't have to be Galloway, but I like to show off the area and everyone's already seen the Midlands.

There won't be programme items, or anything complicated; after all, there's a reason the Cons are only every two years. The closest to a programme item that we've thought of is a trip over to Wigtown ("Scotland's Book Town", known for its numerous bookshops... and the nearby Bladnoch distillery. And yes, they do tours.) and possibly a visit to Cream O'Galloway, the local (and extremely good) ice cream farm.

We have had one idea for a main event, if it can be called that. Hogswatch dinner (or, in my language, "excuse for heavily pork-based meal with lots of roast potatoes"). The problem with that is of course that it of necessity clashes with Wincanton, or at least ends up in the same general neighbourhood. So perhaps it'll be further into December, or something.

Anyway, nothing's set in stone yet; it's not even certain, after all, that there'll be anything. (Oh, and obviously a key aim will be to keep costs as far down as they can possibly go.) But it would be interesting to see what interest's like - is there anyone who thinks it could be fun, feasible or, ideally, both? I'll bring my Just A Minute bells and my complete set of Mornington Crescent Stovold Mk 2 ferrocheminators.

Anyone tempted?
