    Fan Fiction in Schools
I am a teacher who has integrated fan fiction into my classroom throughout the year.  As I sit down and reflect upon the experience of having students write their own pieces I am interested in knowing more about how other people perceive fan fiction and the impact that it might have  had on you as a writer.  Are you more confident in your ability now?  What did fan fiction writing give you that other writing genres have not?  Do you primarily write fan fiction or do you participate in communities discussing fan fiction?  Thanks in advance for sharing.

Last Saturday, I'm happy to announce, the first Chapter of Guardians went live. You can go to http://www.guardiansnovel.com to hear it!

So far it's gotten rave reviews. I was on Jackie Kessler's "Cat and Muse". Karen Syd from Echelon Press recommended it.

I would love to know what you think! Don't be shy.

Update on MA thesis on HP fan fiction
    Hi!

With this message, I would like to thank all of you who answered my questionnaire at http://fanfiction.frontexperts.com (see the original message below) and have given me helpful feedback. Many of you who sent me emails with comments let me know that my questionnaire did not fully embrace your experience with fan fiction. Because a survey is a highly standardized research instrument, there was no way of avoiding this problem but I decided to broaden my research design according to the concerns conveyed to me. Thus, I would like to conduct a group discussion with fan fiction authors where they will have the opportunity to freely talk about their experience without being bound by narrow questions like in the survey.

Therefore, I am looking for Harry Potter fan fiction authors who will attend the LeakyCon 2009 from May 21st-24th in Boston and who would be willing to get together for an hour or two as a group to discuss their experience with me and the other fan fiction authors. As far as I can tell from the LeakyCon schedule, Saturday morning would probably work best to meet for the discussion. Also, it would give us a chance to get to know each other on Thursday or Friday. I will provide a space at the hotel where we will be undisturbed and make sure we have drinks and snacks. A group of 8-12 people would work best but if there are too few people for a group discussion, I would be happy to meet with any of you informally at LeakyCon to talk about your experience as a fan fiction author.

By participating in a group discussion, you would make an immense contribution to the quality and accuracy of my research. I am looking forward to meeting you in person and hearing about your life in Harry Potter fan fiction. If you want to participate please let me know until May 19th by replying to this message or at fanfictions@ gmx.net or petra.baumann@edu.uni-graz.at.

Thank you so much for your repeated help!
    Best,
    Petra

Harry Potter Fan Fiction - Help with MA thesis!
    Hello!
I hope it's OK that I'm posting this message here. I do not have any financial interest whatsoever, this message regards academic research only!

My name is Petra Baumann and I’m doing research for my master’s thesis in sociology on Harry Potter fan fiction at the University of Graz, Austria. As a sociologist, I am especially interested in the social background of fan fiction authors: where they come from, how old they are, etc. Through my research I found that, many studies on fan fiction are done in the fields of literary studies, women studies, or cultural studies but there are very little sociological data available, especially on the Harry Potter fan fiction community.

In order to gather sociological data on Harry Potter fan fiction authors, I developed a short online questionnaire. If you are an author of Harry Potter fan fiction you would immensely help me with my research if you could answer this questionnaire at
    http://fanfiction.frontexperts.com

The questions will take about 10 minutes to answer and there will be no spam or advertising when you click the link. The evaluation is done anonymously and the data will be used solely for academic research. If you have any questions regarding the questionnaire or my research please feel free to contact me at fanfictions@gmx.net or visit my LifeJournal.

    Thank you!
    Best,
    Petra

    New Angellus Journals
Just a bit behind but the Angellus Journals: 4 was released last Sunday. AJ:5 will be up on Monday!

From the Podcast Novel: Guardians by Kimi Alexandre here's your chance to ask Kimi, her characters, or her cast any question you'd like!

Who knew that a trip to a museum benefit to guard an underwear model could change a girl’s whole life? Raegan Fischer stepped into a closet but didn’t quite come out alone. Now she’s part of a secret but no one let her in on the rules. It’s set to put her smack in the middle of a celestial police investigation she’s not equipped to deal with.

In order to protect her sanity, her body, and people she cares about, she’s going to have to figure out who isn’t what they appear to be, play a game of spiritually enlightened catch up, and track down an artifact that holds a dangerous key to the whole thing.

    Writing help desperately required!
Hi all, new member here. I'm sorry if this sort of thing isn't allowed, but I am desperate for help. Can anyone assist me in any possible way?

I'm in college and am having major trouble with an assignment, a 2-page (double-spaced) critical review of an article. I don't know what to do!

The article I've chosen is "Hopping Frogs and Trail Walks", and basically it says that children should be allowed the opportunity to explore the natural environment as much as possible, as it's good for them.

So now what do I do? How the hell do I make that into an assignment?

    I'll c+p the instructions:

"The process you will undertake is to:
    1. Read the article critically.
    2. Think critically about the article.
    3. Write an article report following the writing critically guidelines of the text."

The text is "Quick Access Reference for Writers" by Quitman-Troyka and Hesse, 3rd ed. It mentions some kind of SASE thing, I don't understand wtf that even means. The instructor's no help at all, just tells me to read the text.

I'm desperate, this assignment is already overdue and if I don't hand it in, I'll literally fail the course. Please help in any way you can!

    novels and Charcacter introdcution
    I have a technical question:

As a rule I’ve been told not to intro important characters in the third/ fourth act as it is a bit contrived.

how late, in your view, in a novel-length work, do you think it is acceptable to introduce a new important character .

    readerjack.com
is an internet publisher where all authors can publish their work in ebook format. Authors maintain 100% ownership of their work, each ebook is copyright protected and assigned an ISBN, and authors receive royalties for each book sold.

Most publishers won't take a chance on new authors. JK Rowling's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was refused by 11 publishers before the 12th said they would publish her book. Now she's one of the most well-known writers in the world. What if she had not submitted it the 12th time?

readerjack.com publishes all authors, and gives them the opportunity to have their work recognized. Authors retain 100% ownership of their work, and are free to market it however they choose. readerjack.com has made it possible for authors to get published and expose their work in a way no other publisher has before.

We're currently holding a poetry contest, as well as a Halloween short story contest. More information is available at our Livejournal community, [info]readerjack_lj or at our website.

Invitation to submit to new webzine!
Hi everyone, I invite all the artists in this community, and anyone else you may know, to submit artwork or writing to our new literary/artistic/cultural/nature and travel writing/scientific webzine Synchronized Chaos!

Information on the zine and how to submit, from the Facebook group http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=20763137372&ref=mf :

This is all of our new brainchild, an art/cultural/literary/scientific/social commentary/essay webzine tentatively called "Synchronized Chaos" (referring to some kind of not-obviously-apparent logic that emerges spontaneously from randomnity, basically a fun way to have a theme without having a theme.)

Sort of a way to help the aspiring artists we constantly meet to get their names out there and spotlight some excellent work which should have an audience but the artists don't want to go through the publication process. And to give people committed to worthwhile causes a way to speak out or to use their personal experiences to educate others.

Everyone's invited to submit (and everything should be accepted, unless it's obscene or hateful). If you are interested please send a submission via email anytime this summer. We're working towards setting up a regular editing board and designating people to handle certain kinds of submissions, but for now you may use my email, cedeptula@sbcglobal.net

We're online in a rough draft form (all the artwork and writing is posted by our promised deadline but the Word Press blog still needs customization, quotes, links, and pictures to make the site more navigable) at http://www.synchchaos.com and invite you to check it out! Think of it as a building in progress, with the scaffolding still attached but with some interesting posted architectural plans.

We are not a paying market as of yet but hope to become one as we grow and sell advertising and/or host contests. The magazine's online contents will remain free to provide artists and writers with the greatest level of exposure possible.

So far we have received a good variety of submissions, and look forward to more! We're also [info]chaos_zine on LJ and would be a publishing credit for any visual artist or writer to put on his/her bio or proposal or resume.

You may either pitch or send a completed product (attachments OK but prefer writing or thumbnails or JPEG images pasted in the body of the email.) Please put "Synchronized Chaos Submission" in the subject line and please feel free to include an artist statement or bio if you would like.

Also - our magazine is as much about building community and relationships with artists as it is about publication. We'd be happy to see artists and writers post and chat with each other in [info]chaos_zine or on the Facebook page and would be glad to comment/critique or dialogue with you about your work if you would like.

    Inspiration
    Hi all,

I'm working towards an Arts Award, and I'm focussing on my creative writing skills. In particular, I'm looking at where other creative writers find their inspiration for short stories.

So, if you'd be so kind, I'd really appreciate some responses to this post with answers to the following:

When writing a short story, where do you find inspiration? Do you use any techniques or processes to look for inspiration? If so, could you please explain these?

Any other comments on gaining inspiration, especially with respect to short-story writing, would be very much appreciated!

    Many thanks in advance,

    TK
