The Only Symphony
01.
He wakes up from that resonating dream he’s been having for quite some time now. You don’t want to wake up, but his jagged breathing draws you to sit up and hold him close. You think for a while whether to follow what your mind advised you or not, and eventually get up and plant a soft kiss on his forehead. He snuggles Kumagoro close, and fitfully tries to go back to sleep.
Instinctively, you put an arm around his waist and hold him close.
02.
The phone rings. You take a peek at the number flashing on your phone’s screen. A smile forms on your lips. You pick up the phone, pause for a while, then chuckle. You insist that he drop the “shachou” act for you know he calls you Tohma. You hear a mellifluous laugh from him and heave a sigh.
He ends the call. You draw the receiver close to your lips.
03.
He appears behind you all of a sudden, and you almost jump in surprise. He rests his chin on your shoulder. You merely shrug and let him be, attending to the stacks of papers that have been on your desk for ages. You hesitate for a while, debating with your mind whether to put your pen down or not. Your subconscious mind wins.
You turn around and he jumps in surprise. Your lips touch Kumagoro’s ear. You force a laugh as he bursts in laughter.
04.
You drop him off over at the studio as he watches Shuichi in amazement. You note that sparkle in his eyes as he catches sight of a young blonde lad.
You were in his place before. What if you put him in your place now?
05.
You just stand here, not moving. Your feet seem to have been glued to the hard cement. You hate it; you’ve always been the control-freak. But here you are, standing still, not making a sound.
You’ve always made the right decisions. You’ve definitely broken that record now.
06.
He extends his hand to shake the writer’s own. Shuichi almost squeals in excitement as he sees his idol just a few steps from him. Shuichi asks if he was there to watch the pink-haired lad’s performance. He replies with a jolly nod, but you know otherwise.
He has always liked the sun. He has always lived in reality. And that’s his advantage.
07.
You steal a glace at him for a couple of times during your practice, your fingers not trailing off. You’ve memorized the notes by heart. You know you wouldn’t miss. Not a bit.
But, you muse, if the light is just too bright, won’t you be blinded?
08.
He drapes his arms around you, sighing in defeat. He tells you that you did great, and you just chuckle. You affirm with a curt nod, and you ruffle his hair. He lets out a sound of protest and tackles you. Everyone who passes you by takes a second look at the compromising position that you are in.
Your newly bought trench coat is ruffled, but for all you care.
… Especially when he suddenly plants a kiss on your cheek.
09.
He turns his heel and runs away, and you run after him. The chase is endless; you’re out of breath. You corner his at last. Time stops for a moment, your eyes fixated on his. You bite your lower lip as your right hand comes in contact with his cheek, leaving three fingers that are more than enough to leave a stinging feeling of a pinch on his cheek.
You wish that time forever stopped at that moment, but time flies. And you know that.
10.
It’s the balance of nature, you say, when one loves someone yet that someone doesn’t love him. That’s your twisted kind of logic, yet he knows what you mean by that. Your belief in that conclusion of yours is firm.
Yet when he opposes you, your arguments crumble into smithereens. And there’s nothing you can do about that.
11.
He continues rambling about how the day went for him. You’re typing away, yet he’s dead sure that you’re listening. He touches that certain topic that makes you stop and shut your laptop down.
You turn to him with a happy smile and listen.
12.
He has always been bursting with happiness, that’s an established fact. There has never been a day that you’ve seen him gloomy.
Your heart breaks as you feel a droplet of water on your palm. Your first instinct is to pat his shoulder, yet you hold him close to you.
Somehow, it feels right.
13.
You kiss him good night and tuck him in bed. You open the bedside lamp and turn off the lights, settling gently on the unoccupied side of your bed.
Your hand reaches out to him in an instinctive manner, yet you hold back.
14.
Batteries do run out of energy, and, certainly, people experience the same. When the music stops, you know that you must try in vain to make the batteries work. You know that the energy’s drained, and there is no point in forcing out the so-called “life” out of that dry cell.
The microphone slips from his hand. You rush to his side just in time to prevent him from hitting the ground.
15.
Your mind is in doldrums. You can’t decide. You know not whether to stay calm, not react, or to just break down. All of a sudden, you are brought to a point in your life when you’d just like to drown and have a revolving lantern experience.
Yet his hands suddenly move against yours. And with that, your life begins again.
16.
“Dakara, you’re there.”
17.
The sudden warmth that flows through his veins makes your eyes shoot up. You don’t want to expect, but something tells you that your intuition is correct.
His eyes flutter, slowly opening.
He smiles.
You smile back.
His eyes slowly close.
The next thing you know, your ears are deafened by a shrill, never-ending sound.
You just want to cover your ears and break down.
18.
He has always been the confident one, the one with charm, looks, you name it. He was the life of the group; you know he knew that.
Perhaps it would be best to disband the group altogether.
What’s the point in trying to live when the heart has already stopped beating?
19.
You lay the flowers gently on the stone and close your eyes. You take off your fedora and place it gently on the top of the epitaph.
You don’t know how to put it into words, but, somehow, everything just falls into place with a simple three-word sentence.
“I love you…”
20.
Your fedora falls on top of the flowers.
A sudden blow of the chilly breeze lets you know that the message has been relayed.
“Ima made… arigatou.”
Finale.
You close your eyes as the breeze tousles your honey-kissed strands. You fight the urge to be with him. You fight the urge to follow him wherever he is.
You think of the happy things instead.
You think of him.
A droplet cascades down your cheek.
You hear the waves crashing against each other in an orchestra-like manner. You hear the voice of the sea. You feel the pull of gravity acting on your body.
You raise your head to the sky.
Somehow, everything feels right.
