Afternoon at the SGH Cafeteria
Izzie smiles to herself and take another sip of her tea. It's pouring outside, but somehow she feels like the sun is shining down on her. She sits alone for now, enjoying the solitude. The other day with Finn was unexpected but somehow refreshing. They talked for hours afterwards and he convinced her to reconsider her internship at Seattle Grace.

Izzie had just finished a two hour meeting with the Chief and Dr. Bailey and was granted permission to continue her internship. Even though she is now under strict probation and being watched like a hawk by Bailey, she doesn't mind so much. She tugs her lab coat around her tighter and it's as if she's starting to become whole again.

She hasn't told her friends yet and she grins to herself again, imagining their faces when they see her sitting casually in the caf in her scrubs and lab coat.

(ooc: I needed to get back in the game and fast forward through some stuff...bare with me here. And someone join Izzie for a little chat.)

Alex is on his way to pick up lab results he should have picked up for Montgomery at least thirty minutes ago. He's not hungry but he knows it pisses her off when he's late and eating so he decides to grab something from the outside cart. He glances outside seeing that it's practically slating it's raining so hard and veers off towards the indoor cafeteria.

He's just tossing some bills at the cashier as he grabs his bagle when he sees someone else from across the room. She's out of place but still it's so comfortable to see her sitting there, casually sipping her tea and tossing him this look. Suddenly pissing off the SheShepherd is not longer top priority as Alex makes his way towards Izzie Stevens.

	Izzie downs her tea in one gulp, almost burning her tongue. She sees Alex walking over to her and he's half smirking, half staring at her confused so she smiles back. "Hey, Alex," she says when he stops in front of her. (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

"Yeah," she sighs, thinking back to the hardcore 'talk' she had with him and Bailey. She was practically ripped apart, told she couldn't perform any surgery, or basic medical proceedures, and was only allowed to shadow other interns. "It was hard, but he let me come back."

Lightning cracks outside and the sky lights up with deep purple and white light. She turns back to Alex. "I'm not really back today. Tomorrow's my official day back, but I just wanted to get back into the feel of things, you know?"

	"Good." He glances around, "Hey I have to run to the labs for Montgomery. I'm sure she's already pissed. So, I'll. Well I'll see you tomorrow." He glances around again. 	Izzie's eyes light up at the mention of getting labs. It's been weeks since she looked at anything medical related and his offer is very tempting. But then Bailey's authoritative voice echoes in her head and she rethinks going. "I'd love to, but if Bailey sees me..." she trails off thinking of the short Nazi's eyes when she gets mad. Izzie laughs at his mention of being on gynie. She knows how much he hates it, and the thought of him following Addison around all day is amusing.

She makes a mock shocked face when he insinuates that she's too chicken to break the rules and raises one eyebrow. "Oh, you did not just go there!" She hops off the table she was perched on and stands nose-to-nose with him. "Let's go get those labs, Dr. Karev."

	He nods his head up and down at her when she mocks his dare and takes the bait- which was the reaction he was aiming for. He can't wipe the grin off his face even as she stands up, reaching her full height and bringing her face inches from his. "And she's back in the game." (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

Izzie makes a face at him but smiles as they make their way across the cafeteria and towards the labs. She chucks her empty tea cup into the trash as they pass it and stuffs her hands into her lab coat pockets.

As they walk in step she thinks about the hundreds of times she's done this before and the hundreds of times she will do this again. This mundane task of getting labs never used to excite her, unless it was an unusual case, but now it reminds her of everything she was about it give up. Being a doctor is her life, it's what she's always worked towards. She lost sight of that when she was in the fog of grief and depression but now that she is back in the SGH halls, she can feel things falling back into place.

Izzie can feel Alex looking at her and she tucks her hair behind her ear self consiously. "What? Is there something on my face? I had a brownie earlier... Do I have chocolate on my face?"

He knows he's smiling. He knows it and she knows it because she's almost smiling as much right back at him.

And it isn't even because of anything they have or had or at one point might have had, really it's because with Izzie- with Izzie, Alex is someone he can like. Not always, never is anything always, but most of the time when he’s with her, Alex feels like he could maybe be a good person. He likes to believe that maybe he too provides her with some temporary relief from the all-the-time-happy-thing she does with everyone else.

Maybe. Maybe not. He’s not even really sure. That’s what he likes- the fact that he doesn’t have to sure, he can just be.

“No,” he cocks his head to the side as he looks at her before opening the door to the stairwell and standing back to let her pass. “No, no chocolate.” And then he laughs because it’s just like her to actually ask if she has anything on her face. Any other girl would have wiped her mouth to make sure and then bring up something completely unrelated to the fact that she might have something on her face. “So you all the way back tomorrow or the chief making you go through some bull shit steps first?”

They take the stairs one at a time, no rushing or urgency in their steps. Alex has changed, Izzie can see that now, and she wonders silently what caused him to become so...decent.

"Well, I'm 'officially' back tomorrow," she begins using airquotes. She stops at the landing and rolls her eyes. "But I can't actually do anything medical other than watch. I'm basically going to have to shadow you guys until they think I'm not a danger to patients anymore."

She gets a little twinge in her chest as she says the words. She's a danger to patients. She was a danger to Denny, no matter how much she loved him. She suddenly pictures herself walking around the hospital with a big red sticker on her back warning: DANGER.

She snaps out of her daydream and they start on the stairs again. "I'm pretty sure I'm never going to see the inside of an OR again. I might as well put my name on one of the seats in the gallery since I'll be spending all my time up there."

"Well between Addison and Slone, I haven't seen the inside of an OR in a month either," he considers this not having really realized how long it had been since he had scrubbed in on an actually procedure-not counting c-sections.

They reach the next set of stairs, continuing their slow climb.

"Not like you'd get any good surgeries anyways. Not with the twins doing every Attending in the hospital."

	"Aren't we a pair?" she asks jokingly. "Should I put your name on the seat next to mine in the gallery? They reach the floor and Izzie opens the door, going through first then holding it open for Alex to follow her. "Twins?" she asks as they make their way to the labs department. 	"Grey and Yang." Still seeing her blank look. "Shepherd and Burke. They don't pick anyone else to scrub in besides whoever is occupying their bed." "Unbelievable," she remarks and stands in line behind another doctor waiting for results. As much as she loved her friends, the hypocrisy was irritating. They constantly talked about things being fair and unbiased, and yet it was pure coincidence to them that they just happened to get all the best surgeries and that they just happened to be screwing the Attendings in charge.

She shakes her head and gives Alex a sympathetic look but breaks into a playful smile. "Well if this is how the hppsital works, it looks like you're going to have to sleep with Dr. Montgomery-Shepherd, and I'll have to sleep with Dr. Sloan if we want any OR time these days..."

	"They would be so lucky." He says out of the side of his mouth, smirking at her before looking up at the nurse whose standing behind the window. "Lucy Collen for Dr. Montomgomery-Shepherd." "Ooooohh" she coos as she takes the files. "Aww, twins!" she comments as she flips through the results and hands them back to Alex. "Too bad it isn't surgical."

They enter the stairwell and suddenly stop dead in their tracks when they hear Bailey's voice. She must be on the phone talking to someone and her voice is getting closer as she comes down the stairs.

"Shit!" Izzie whispers under her breath and grabs Alex by the arm, pulling him down the stairwell in the opposite direction of Bailey's footsteps.

She's practically pulling him down the entire flight of stairs, taking each step two at a time down the first level then the next. He stops her, pushing her up against the wall of one of the stair wells shielding her with his body as they both pause to listen. They can still hear Bailey's voice and it's still loud but at least it doesn't sound like it's getting louder.

They're both breathing semi-hard and he's fighting the urge to laugh when he whispers behind his shoulder. "Shit that was close."

She covers his mouth with her fingertips to shut him up. Bailey could easily hear them whispering and seek them out.

Izzie tries to ignore the fact that Alex's entire body is pressed up against hers as they continue to hide from their resident. The contrast of the cold wall behind her and his warm body in front of her is a little distracting but she snaps back to reality when the doorway above them opens and Bailey's voice fades away once the door closes again. She rests her head on his shoulder and allows herself to giggle at the absurdity of the situation.

He hadn't been aware that they were standing so close until she tilts her head and it lands on his shoulder. She's giggling now which makes him groan inwardly because he loves it when she's laughing. Laughing is good.

He turns around, placing one hand on either side of her but so his palms are flat against the wall. He's trying not to laugh too. "I'm never taking you anywhere again."

	Izzie can't stop giggling at his expression. She can tell he's trying hard not to laugh but she can see the sides of his mouth twitching upwards. "Oh, you missed me. Her hair falls into her eyes and he opens his mouth to say something when she reaches up and swipes her bangs back, lifting her head to look at him. Right in that moment, none of the last three months has happened. Denny didn't die, Alex wasn't an ass, Izzie isn’t broken. It was like before, before when things had been easy.

He is staring at her now. Both their breathing slightly louder then normal breathing should be as he starts to lean forward.

But then Denny had died. Alex had been an ass and Izzie was still broken. So he stops. He drops his hands from where they were trapping her against the wall and takes a step back. "Ah, we should…I should deliver those results."

Izzie looks up and see's his face leaning closer towards her. She freezes. Her heart speeds up and she feels like she can't breathe. It feels like an eternity before Alex breaks eye contact, drops his hands and steps away. She feels flushed and claustrophobic and she can barely make out what Alex is saying to her.

Slowly, the blood rushing past her ears isn't so deafening and she lets out a breath she didn't realize she was holding.

"Yeah, uh... I should go too." She moves away from the wall and heads in the direction of the locker room. "I have errands to run and stuff. So, yeah!"

An intern from a different service runs past them, taking the stairs three at a time. Izzie takes another step away from Alex and gives him a warm smile, trying to break the awkward silence that follows.

"Well, I'll see you tomorrow, then."

"Yeah. Yeah." He nodds back at her. "Tomorrow." She smiles back and turns to leave. "And Iz- I'm here. Tomorrow I mean. And the next day..." He swings his hands together in front of him as he tries to clarify. "I'm just. Here- If you need me." He adds just to make it sound a little less non Alex.

He grins then too and starts to head back up the flight of stairs they just came from, stopping two flights up to jump and slap the top of the stair well with one palm. "Izzie's back."

Izzie watches him go back up the stairs and smiles to herself. He's definitely different; nicer and less obnoxious. It suits him, but also makes her feel off balance, like she doesn't know what to expect anymore.

She exits the stairwell and spots Bailey heading towards her. Izzie doens't want to know how she managed to get down so quickly, but she doesn't have time to care. She slips into the locker room and quickly changes into her regular clothes. She hangs her stethascope back up in her locker, folds her lab coat and scrubs and shuts the door. She grabs her purse and finally heads out the door.

Bailey is outside giving her a sideways look and Izzie just smiles warmly. "See you tomorrow, Dr. Bailey."

It's still pouring outside when she reaches the lobby and she fumbles with her umbrella for a few seconds. She checks her phone quickly for the time and sees a new message from Finn. She closes her phone before listening to the message, and heads out into the cold rain.
