Okay.

After the Fool's Mate scans were uploaded, there's been a big hoopla about how Dir En Grey looks like now. How un-VK they are. I know that I've stated my opinion on this one already however, I can't let it go just like that. I think that many would agree that aside from the fact that their music rocks our world, the way they've dressed up over the past years made us want more. That's the point of being a Visual Kei band, right? Stimulating the audio-visual perception of the people. Dir En Grey is close to my heart because they're the first band that really got me hooked into J-Rock. Everytime that I listen to their music, my mind goes blank and all that exists is my conciousness and their music. I don't know as much as you guys do but I'd like to think that I reserve the right to feel just as bad as any of you.

Leaving their old selves behind may mean a lot of things and indeed, drastic changes in their personality and appearance. However, they're still the same people. I guess the fear that we have is that 'IF' they lose the thing that got them where they are right now, they might fade into nothing. We've placed them in a pedestal ever since they've captured our hearts and minds and this change is making us face the fact they're growing and maturing (in more ways than one). And we fear that they'll just be shadows of who they once were. I love them no matter what and damnit, I'll still be listening to their songs even when I'm too old and my bones are too brittle to headbang.

I'm sorry for being over-dramatic here but that's how much they mean to me. And I bet that's how much they mean to you guys as well. And just so this post won't be 'too off topic' to this wonderful community, I've uploaded some PVs for you guys. They're moving pictures so technically, it is allowed. LOL. Some of you might have it already but for those who don't, here are some short clips that I'd like to share. Every now and then, we'd like to see them stripped down to their normal selves. Without the make up and without the cover act.

Well said.
Though, I wouldn't say they are leaving their old selves behind. It's not like they thought, "Right, let's pretend that whole Visual Kei thing never happened and erase all those years completely."
I believe they've changed naturally and progressively, not drastically. They are focussing on the present and how they want to be right now, and so what if some fans have a problem with it?
So yes, basically I'm agreeing with you XD

Only I wish people would stop calling them "old". Come on. They're late 20s-30s. They're hardly old grey and wrinkly yet LOL

You're right, "naturally and progressively". I guess it's just that to some fans, it's hard to let go of the image they built when the started in this industry. Although, for the conservative, VK can be considered extreme now, to the fans, it's the best ever. The VK-period is when their career started to boom and frankly, some fans are uncomfortable to the fact that they're no longer that way. We, as fans, connect our memories to mental hooks in our memories. And these mental hooks can be anything from music to a simple tattoo.

Ever got those statements from people? Like, "Oh, okay. So they're going punk/grunge/acid/etc. rock now? That is soooo not them."

By the way I love you and that speech deserves a grammy. You hit the spot, I'm sure Dir en grey themselves would love to hear something like that from a fan. There really is no other band like them. And I'll support them no matter where they go in their image or sound. Because I love Dir en grey for Dir en grey and not for their appearance. Every dedicated fan should have the same mentality. :3

Dir en grey is beautiful. No matter what. With piercings, without them, with tattoos, no matter what they wear because the clothes don't matter.
No other band seems to shine as brightly as they do.
No matter what they wear or how they sound they are still the Dir en grey that I and the rest of you have fallen for.
The whole clothes thing is such a mundane and unimportant matter compared to the power that is their music
SO we must not lose sight of that.

I honestly think what you wrote hit the spot. The more I look around some Dir En Grey communities, the more I get aggravated when I see people calling them "Now they're just plain ugly" "I can't tell them apart" and so on and so forth. In my case, I became a Dir En Grey fan last year, and all I ever saw was their vk and thought "They're pretty cool." then I saw their Withering to Death Apperance, and liked them even more just for the fact they could change how they look yet, still make GOOD music, and the true fans would still love them for it.

I just wanted to tell you I think this was a really good thing that needed to be said. So thank you. ^^

Oh and one other thing, never look at the reviews for Withering To Death on Yesasia.com, I got so friggen pissed off it was sad. lol.

Have a good day!

I actually do not want to react in those forums. I'm a member of two, by the way. They're like lions there. You say something not to their liking, they pounce on you and start playing rock-paper-scissors to determine who gets to bite you first. I'm not saying that they all share the same opinion but it can become biased everyu now and then because if an older member is anti, then some members tend to flood to that side.

As much as they say they aren't visual anymore, they still are. Kyo's Clever Sleazoid costume- there is no way he could walk down the street anywhere (excluding Harajuku, lol) and not get looks, therefore they -are- still visual, just not to the extreme that they were. A lot of fans are making a fuss about it, but I have no problem with it as long as the music doesn't start to suck. I like new Diru better than early Diru (excluding WtD, that CD just sucked for the most part IMO), and I'm starting to like the new looks. Die looks good, Shinya looks good, I've learned to love Kaoru and his "chin-pubes", and even Toshiya and his "Mexican Crackwhore" look is growing on me (still not fond of Kyo's look though). If they want to make their look grow up, let them. They're anywhere for 27-31. Most little boys grow out of playing dressup by the time their eight. So they waited a little longer. Is that going to kill anyone?

It's ok to speak your mind about them here as long as you keep it OT somewhere within the post. And as long as it doesn't start up a riot XD

I think a lot of us have that twinge of fear where they might loose what got us into them originally (well... the older fans anyway). They had a certain sound, a certain appearance that was nothing like anything you'd find in the US or Europe. I myself just don't want them to change simply to get more popular or seem more appealing to potential overseas fans. Afterall, what got me into them was their unique style 5 years ago all the way back in 2000.
But while they change, I don't think they're really leaving their old selves behind. Music and appearance can change but they're all still the same people.

Lol. Well I'm glad this did not start a riot. (keeping my fingers crossed... don't want to be kicked out...)

As hebiichiqo said, they did not change drastically. I guess the part of me that said that they did is just whining because it misses the old Dir En Grey. And yes, I have to agree with you when you said they did not leave their old selves behind. Their influences, their motivations remains the same and regardles of what market they're trying to capture, their music remains unique.

I guess the reason for the slight change in the band just to broaden their reach market-wise and to grow artist-wise.

Agreed.

Too many people treat them like a boyband. That's not what they are.

In fact, they probably left the VK scene for that reason. They probably didn't want people purely liking them because of what they look like rather than the music they play.

And that is why I love the Rock Legends Program03 - just them in the studio doing what they do best - making F*&%ing excellent music!

You said what so many people think... I am also a member of some of the *other* Dir en grey communities and I agree that they can get a bit "touchy" sometimes but it's just people's opinions I suppose.

Here in merry old England, they're so much better than any of the other old poop Kerrang or Scuzz tells us we should like so I'm just greatful that I was introduced to them!

I mean, it would be weird for evreyone to love them, I know that but to just turn them because they changed their appearance? I'd understand if they criticized their albums or something but to 'hate' them for such a shallow reason is just wrong. Give me a constructive criticism of their music--not their fashion sense. So I watched it and yeah, I thought it was a prank. However, since I don;t understand Japanese, some of them said that it's not. This clip is about the bowling ball present. *shrugs* I am really confused. I'm going to edit again...
