Tutorial : Random
Making
For GIMPers. I have no idea if it is translatable or not. I think not, though, because we’re using the Render tool.
If you need anything clarified, just let me know.
Pre-tut notes: I am using gray and green for the colors, but keep in mind you can use any color you’d like. Go crazy. Neon pink and orange even. : ) This is mainly a tutorial to show you NOT to be afraid of the Render tool - many cool things can appear if you experiment.
Starting with a blank 100x100 canvas.
1) Now, pick your background + color of the outline box (I chose a light gray: #eacecea) and go to Filters >> Render >> Pattern >> Checkerboard. A box should pop up. Personally, I like making the size of boxes 10 pixels, but this is a personal preference. Click ok, and you should get something like this:
2) Now, for the body. This is surprisingly super easy. XD First, let’s get the font that you’ll need from dafont.com HERE. Install it, and it should appear now. Go to Filters >> Text >> FreeType and click on the new font. You can make it any size you want - personal preference. However, leave enough space so you can make your border for the body and text later. I used “U” to get this shape.
3) Now for the ever-lovely rectangular tool. Now, I’m not going into detail on how to make the appropriate size box, but I will say leave about 8-10 pixels on each side of the figure and about 3-4 on the top and bottom of the figure. Place the layer below the figure layer.
4) Now make another box and fill it with your background color. Make it about 2-4 pixels wider than the white box. Place that layer beneath the white box.
5) Merge the white and gray box layers, duplicate, and bring it upwards on the canvas. This will give room for whatever text you would like. Make sure to have this layer BELOW the original.
6) Final touch - the text! I used Georgia at 7 pt in a neon green (#00ff00) and put it in the above box. I moved the whole ensemble (excluding the checkerboard) down to fit the canvas better and to make it feel not as cluttered.
I love to see results!
