4:21 am - Would you sell them this cheap?

hairypolack
The 89 + betacam SP tapes I posted about.. somebody on craigslist says they want them

his letter said :
My form of payment will
be by sending you Check via UPS with a second day air delivery.

I'll be responsible for the pick-up and the movers fee will be
included in your payment to avoid delay and to enable pick up company
to schedule an appropriate time for the pick-up at your location after
check has been cashed as I have other properties to be moved alongside
the item.

Would have love to come over for viewing but I'm afraid that might
not be possible due to my work frame. If you have more pics please
send so I can have a good look. Do get back to me with your full name
and address including your cell and land number so I can make out
payment.

*********

should I happy to be rid of them- or am I cheating myself? Im also nervous about sending them BEFORE Im paid.. what would YOU do?

9:51 pm - capturing clips from DVD in Premier Pro

ciddyguy
And these are not encrypted/commercial DVD's, but stuff I've dubbed to DVD from video tape. I was able to do get the clips off of DVD directly through Premiere Elements 2, no problemsand I don't recall ever having to download any codecs and now, I can't do that w/ Premiere Pro. It says something in the help about while it supports such, including VOB files, of which is what I'm grabbing the clip of and it's usually the last file shown once you open the VTS folder after selecting all files, the codec may not be available locally. I also tried to do this in encoder and that didn't work either.

Well, it appears I can't just import said clips and can't figure out what to google for in the way of codecs. VOB codec perhaps? Anyway, I found some work arounds for CS2 and I have CS4.

So in the end, do I have to download a codec for VOB files or is there something I need to set up first?

Thanks again!

8:49 pm - Animation Masters Thesis LJ

but_no_cigar
Hi guys,

I've started a new lj that I think many of you might find interesting.  I'm a masters student in 3D animation at the Glasgow School of Art, and the blog is the critical component of my master's thesis practical animation project.  I'm going to try and make it a theory-minded work-in-progress review of what I'm doing, literally as I'm doing it.  I'll explain the choices I'm making with the work, why I'm making them, and as much as I can compare and contrast with anything else relevant I get my hands on as part of my research.  Alongside this, I also hope to explore what it means to be an artist criticizing and theorizing, in particular about their own work, and, in a larger sense, what it means to "do" theory with a working knowledge of the creative process itself.

Right now "official" blog installments are planned for the pre-production, modeling and texturing, animation, post-production, and final, overall review stages.  These entries will be tagged "official."  Extra nuggets of theory and critical discussion that don't go along with these official entries will be tagged "theory."  I would also like this blog to become a resource for the animation community here on livejournal, and so I'm going to also post links to helpful tutorials and similar resources where I come across them, naturally with my nutshell opinions thereof.  These posts will be tagged "technical resources."  As far as my own personal areas of technical expertise go, I'm working with Maya 2009 for the 3D animation, shooting reference and special effects film with a Canon mini-DV camera, doing sound in Pro Tools, working with post-production effects in After Effects and possibly Combustion, and editing the whole shebang together with Avid.

Apologies for joining mainly to self-promote!  I'd love to hear any comments anyone has about the project or in general.

Thanks!
Samantha Close

5:28 pm - Audio problem

ciddyguy
After trying to figure out what the name of the program I use to interleave the MPEG2 files from a DVD RAM disk, turns out it was Virtual Dub Mod, a nifty little application that can interleave the MPEG2 so it can then be saved as AVI, with audio, which then could be opened in Premier Elements no problem on my old PC, well today, I have a new Dell Studio XPS with the Core i7 processor at 4G of RAM, running Vista Home Premium 64.

After figuring out the download, I finally got a successful copy that seems to work so I then I had it interleave a DVD RAM clip so I could save it, same as in the past, well, it DID just fine, that is until I went to import it into Premiere, AVI files don't play well in Premiere Pro, also, no audio. After some figuring out, I opened up Adobe's Media Encoder and it encoded file saved to the hard drive as F4V, which Premiere took great, but no audio as apparently, the saved files had no audio.

Then I tried to encode directly from the RAM disk itself, Encoder could not recognize the file VRO file, which is where the actual program files exist.

I've even tried to record it directly in real time through the PC, using Nero Showtime, recording into Soundbooth, but the audio does not transfer across.

Have any other solutions? As it turns out the DVD burner that came with this PC CAN playback RAM material just fine, BTW, I have the Adobe Master Suite CS4 in case there is a program in there that will solve this. BTW, Premiere can't take DVD RAM directly, I know, I tried that.

Any and all suggestions greatly appreciated.

8:13 pm - Raid arrays and Premier Pro

ciddyguy
Hey y'all,

I am awaiting shiny new Dell Studio XPS 435 full ATX tower PC w/ the Core i7 processor to arrive and since I use Photoshop and Premiere Elements now (and Premier can do HD, even version 2.0) and am considering upping to CS3 or 4, pref the suit w/ Illustrator and After Effects and such within the year and had been reading up on the min's for Premier Pro when I was speccing out my PC for potentially going high def and one of the system requirements for high def is stripped array (RAID 0) and preferably SCSI.

From what I have looked today, that's still an expensive option when compared to what one can get for the same price in a SATA drive, now true, I was looking at the Cheeta at 10K RPM and they are whicked expensive in SCSI format (184GB or so for less than $200 if I recall right when for the same price, one can get at least 500G drives w/ SATA, if not 1TB). The new PC has an eSATA port on the back of the box as well as firewire 400 and USB.

I looked at external eSATA drives and found that Simple Tech has one that runs off of that or USB that is 2 drives in one enclosure that is capable of 0 or 1 RAID and up to 2TB (1, 1.5, and 2TB capacities) and the least expensive price I found was 188.99 online via price grabber.

So my question is, with Premier Pro, would the eSATA be adequate for fast, reliable performance or is SCSI still the king of the heap? Mind you, this will be something I do at lease 6 months down the road, if not closer to a year out, the computer is specced to handle HD when the time comes and even has an HD widescreen monitor and 4 gigs of DDR3 RAM, perhaps may boost it to 6GB later on and an ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics card w/ 512MB of VRAM (the PC can take up to a Gig of VRAM on a graphics card)

I'm asking as it'll determine the best course of action for I want to have a separate hard drive for scratch disks from the main boot drive and still use my 500GB USB 2 simpletech (7200RPM) external HD for audio and image etc storage when the RAID is finally purchased as the PC can only hold 3 HD's internally, now if it held 4, that'd be a no brainer but...

Thanks for your time in advance.

7:52 pm - Sony camcorders

chuckvideo
I was wondering if anyone's used or had experience with the Sony HDR-CX100 Hi Def Camcorder. I'm looking for an overall Hi Def camera to shoot family videos and some occasional projects with, and I'm looking with a versatile camera with decent battery life and a good quality microphone in the $500 range.

Has anyone used this camera, or does anyone have a recommendation for perhaps a better camera for the price? One thing the Sony camera lacks is an external audio in connector, which would be a plus for my uses.

Thanks in advance.

8:20 pm - Question for you video editor gurus out there

ciddyguy
I am working towards landing a new creative type of career, at the very least creating internal signs and such for a company, or marketing materials etc for creative companies to sell to clients to gain business and want to keep my options open for personal creative/arty endeavors which would include video, HD or SD and that means upgrading my gear and software for I know that in many positions, MS Office, especially word, PowerPoint and Publisher would be used and for more graphics type stuff, Illustrator, Photoshop and perhaps After Effects or the like for 3D stuff when needed and that also means upgrading my PC to a new machine of at lease Duo Core 2 Quad processor or greater. I DO now most of Office so that's a given and do know a fair amount on Photoshop, but mostly elements 4 but have cut my initial teeth using an older version of PS, 5.5 w/ Image Ready 2 for Windowos.

Anyway, due to budget and such, I'm thinking of going w/ Dell for I can get an employee discount that can save me a decent amount on a new PC. Specing of late reveals I can spec a Dell Inspiron desktop PC to a Quad processor, upgrade a few other things and I can get it for $1300 or some such or I can get an XPS desktop workhorse machine, also from Dell w/ the i7 process for not too much more with not as much configuring as I would the inspiron for video.

Anyway, if I do video, I'll go withi Premier Pro, I use Premier Elements 2 now on my less than adequate PC and it does OK but no matter what, video playback sucks no matter the source or what it's played on, some players do worse than others is all, even worse if it's a full rez SD video file I have created (burn it out to DVD and it's fine on any DVD player). It's a P4 w/ a gig of RAM but I suspect the MB to be a POS and the graphics card is old but did read up some reviews on FCP today as everyone says it's the editor to go with if you plan on getting even remotely serious about video but the current version of Final Cut Suite has had some mixed reviews with it having an ancient interface, to the compressor software being unreliable and problematic w/ subfiles etc. and some of these were from pros who've used FCS in their work/company (and in some cases for years)  and are contemplating moving to Adobe. If this is the case, that's a shame and Apple does not support Blue Ray when I think Adobe does and I know companies like Dell offer Blue Ray players/burners as options for their PC's.

But am curious, what are your experiences w/ FCP in recent years, has Apple kind of lost it and what about Premier? I know at one point, they were not stable, especially versions up to Ver. 5 but Version 6 was the first version to really take Premier into the big leagues, inso far as reliability is concerned. Is that still the case now (I have some personal experience w/ Premier 4 and 5 on the Power PC back in the late 90's and indeed it had it's issues w/ reliability etc, 4 more than 5 when I managed a video program at a local community college and they do have G4's w/ FCP as well)?

Curious as in CS4, Premier will accept FCP's EDLs but does FCP of Premier? I could not find any mention that I could see of that and is that also true of CS3?

Thanks in advance.

The fantastic 'Mercury Prize' nominated artist Helicopter Girl performs the coolest of cool sets at the House Of Rock Studios, Glasgow for Kerchoonz Live #1.

"I believe that if anyone is putting in work, they should receive compensation. At the same time, we must also be aware of things they offer that are a real plus for artists, such as the exposure. Having said that, it was lovely to receive a payment from Kerchoonz." - Helicopter Girl www.kerchoonz.com/helicoptergirl

You know how when you rewind or fast forward a video tape, you get the effect of static and lines quickly scurring past the screen?

How would I record that? Ideally, I would want this image/effect to be uploaded to a DVD.
Better yet, is there a way to get that effect on a digital editing program like Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere Pro?

Is the below technically feasible? If so, how would I go about doing it?

I want to set up a video camera in a room and have whatever the camera captures projected onto the wall via a projector. But here's the tricky part: I want there to be a delay in the projection. For example, say someone walks into the room and begins jumping up and down for 10 seconds then does other things. Instead of having the jumping up and down projected live, I want it to be projected about 30 seconds or something AFTER the action actually happens so that the person see what he or she was doing 30 seconds ago.

Hope this makes sense.
