It's been way too long. [Jul. 20th, 2008|01:09 am]

birdboy2000
Even without the personal issues, it's been way too long. It was way too long in March. It was too long in December.

Any tips for invigorating one's writing spirit? I want to create, but I can't seem to get myself to work on anything.

So, yesterday someone in the Borders manga aisle asked me out of nowhere if it was true that Japanese was read backward -- her boyfriend/male friend/brother/some guy had just told her this and she didn't believe him. I also managed to ride on the same bus to the mall as two people I know. Yeah, Ithaca isn't that big, and I live on the downtown-mall bus route (at least on weekends -- the route changes on weekends to better swing by all the dorms instead of the part of campus with the classrooms. As a result, the bus stop where I live moves about a block.)

I had more thoughts, but I can't think of them. D&D continues to be fun. Dave is talking about running a one-shot of Paranoia, and I am temped to see how obnoxiously perky I can be while playing Paranoia.

I missed the Avatar finale tonight, but will catch it tomorrow.

So, given that I'll be in town a little longer, I ordered sushi (Avatar-themed, of course), brewed up some tea, and settled in for one of the greatest finales in the history of animation.

Avatar series finale? EPIC. The creators better start work on a spin-off or something to resolve dangling threads. Zutaran tears taste like delicious candy.

Just one question: WHERE'S HAWKY?!

also, reactions. SPOILERS AHOY )

Que d'eau, que d'eau! [Jul. 19th, 2008|07:56 pm]

[mood | stressed]

Tonight was... eventful. Okay, the last hour.

I'd been chatting away for some time with people. And there was this noise in the next room. The boiler/heating/fridge room (what? the fridge doesn't fit in my room <__< and it's noisy... Oh wait, the other noise.). I though it was just someone taking their shower. But then I had to go there to rinse my glass of milk, and there was water EVERYWHERE. in my room, the corridor, all over the boiler room....

I panicked and ran upstairs looking for the landlords' phone number (My luck has it these things always happen when they are not there). Then I remembered that when they leave, there's always someone to keep watch over the... other tenants (my landlords manage a home for mentally handicapped people). I rushed up the stairs, bathrobe (I was planning on taking a shower later, plans that are for now, postponed) flying, occasionally revealing starry underwear (until at some point I thought about putting on pants). Then we started running all over the place, pulling furniture (water had leaked through two walls in the next room), mopping up water were we could with towels (my landlords don't even own a friggin' mop! Fortunately, they have a lot of towels. I swear I've seen so many in my life!), and laying other towels down on the patch of soaked carpet, replacing them when they were useless with new ones. Louise got the brilliant idea of running the soaked ones through the spin cycle, which helped lots. Nobody would have noticed the leak until, like, an hour or two later when Louise would have went to bed if I hadn't been there. God knows the damage that would have happened.

And finally, when we had done all we could, I could come back to my neglected MSN convos (nobody had noticed that I had vanished >__>), work on coming down from the CRAZY ADRENALINE HIGH, and take off my soaked socks so my feet could dry. Oh, and trying to remember what I had done with the glass I had been going to rinse to begin with. Spent fifteen minutes looking for the damn thing >__< Put my socks to dry too.

I have never been more disappointed in my fandom than I have been today.

http://www.sonicstadium.org/news/sept-nintendo-power-confirms-sega-continues-to-whore-sonic

We have a Nintendo Power scan, revealing a brand new Sonic game. Naturally, people throw a fit over it, but this time it's based on absolutely nothing beyond a single cover image.

And now Sonic Stadium, the much reputed and proven BEST source of information is acting like freaking 4chan with its news articles.

I'll admit, when I saw it, I had a fangasm. I was so bloody excited because it LOOKED so cool. But I don't see why boundless optimism should be completely discounted when boundless pessimism has ruled for so long. I mean, it's a visual alone, and isn't the job of a visual to ATTRACT based on the simple matter of appeal? The Sonic fandom doesn't punish optimism, it destroys it.

Yes, I know the series hasn't exactly been stellar for a while. Yes, I know lots of Sonic fandoms are jaded. But there is no excuse for a place that people who go to a site for NEWS - news that should be reported UNBIASEDLY out of respect for members' of the fanbase's right to form their own opinions - uses its initial post about a new game to manipulate and tell people how to think. Why not just post it? Why not just say this exists?

Shortpacked was right. Fandom isn't a wonderful place. Fandom is a horrible world where the majority cares only about proving and perpetuating an established opinion and status quo, and for mocking or deriding anything that exists outside of it. And then, when the tragedy of wank, argument, and shit like this happens, they celebrate it and poke fun at people's nerd rage. And I'm part of the horrible fucking system.

You find bright spots in the whole thing. You find friends and respectable people, and sometimes you get a fandom that's better than others.

But these are rare gems that should be protected.

I hate this. Something I grew up loving, a video game character that inspired me and defined my life is being made black and ugly by the people who claim to love it. I don't care if I'm not thinking logically. I'm sick of it. I'm tired of it. It makes me want to SCREAM.

SEGA isn't ruining the dream, IT'S EVERY GOD DAMNED SINGLE ONE OF THEM.

I FUCKING HATE FANDOM.

One of the best reasons to love Avatar - as well as being, you know, coherently written and wonderfully characterised and adorably self-aware and beautifully animated and generally awesome, it mocks fandom. And I swear this one was even more blatant about it than the School Time Shipping short, which says one hell of a lot.

So today's been a productive day.

-I finally got pants and boots for my Kaede costume. Although the boots are made for winter and are awfully warm, but oh well.
-I got my butt to Burger King to get the new Pokémon toys. I got a Pikachu standee with a card, but I haven't opened it yet (should I?)
-I found out I won an icontest! There were two themes and everyone else did Izzy, so my Game Over icon was all by its lonesome...but finally, making Oikawa icons paid off! And it wasn't that complicated either; the hardest thing was brushing the timestamp off Yukio's hair.
-And I made [info]pokemacros. I was very surprised that I couldn't find any Pokémon macro comms already, but hey.

Oh yeah, I wrote three fics, all about the same characters. Violence for [info]30_kisses, then cowrote Dream and Normal with [info]angellover89 for [info]rocket100. Violence is...pretty sadistic but only has one direct act of violence despite the title, Dream is a crackfic and has some gross humor, while Normal has illness-related things and an excerpt from an indavertently hilarious sex scene from some novel (Buson's reading it aloud and it actually makes Bashou laugh). Oh yeah, and Normal is a followup to Dream, so read Dream first.
It occurs to me how few of my fics really tie into each other, so Dream>Normal>(rest of the arc) is a rarity. Probably because I usually kill characters off (like in Violence) that I need back in later fics.

Now to resume work on the two Sacredshippy fics I was doing.

Oh yes, this past week there was some...interesting news. You know Anime Evolution, the fic I go to British Columbia for? It was scheduled for the week before Kumoricon, so next month...and then we get emails saying that AE has been "postponed". Apparently the place it was going to be at decided to have teacher conferences instead, even though AE's been scheduled since early this year. So now they're trying to find a new location for that weekend (it won't interfere with Kumori, though--people are very insistant that it not, since there's another con in Seattle at the same time as well). I'm good with pretty much whenever, but a lot of people are possibly out a considerable amount of money.

And, since I started off the entry talking at least partially about icons, here's some of the others I've made recently! Most of them about Jiri, of course.
God damn, it took me this long to realize that two verses of that song fit Jiri in that scene perfectly? There's something WRONG with me, considering how long I spent obsessed with that movie.
Yes I did another Jiri icon with that caption. I don't care.
I don't know if these are funny or sad. Or both.
'sup indeed.
NotJiri is...interesting. He's like Jiri, but he's a raving lunatic psycho and is totally undistingushed.

And speaking of raving lunatic psychos! Because when am I going to have a segue like that again? (ok, probably more than one would think) I made FFVI icons playing off a recent icon trend which is probably nearly over now that the movie it's about is finally out.

I need someone to kick me into gear with Turquoise and/or Obsession. You all know the drill. And on the subject of "the drill", remember to look at my fics to see what you think I should submit to Kumoricon. Although since I'm working at it, I can only submit three fics total, so that limits the playing field even more, but hey, ANY suggestions work!

Oh yes, I found a fanvid that does what's so rare in the fandom--it UNDERSTANDS Oikawa. It's awesome so I thought I'd spread it around.

See you next time!

[mood | utterly baffled]

You know, there are a lot of things about fandoms that I don't really understand the apeal of - like femslash and 'high school' AUs - but I've figured that it's just the writer's personal tastes and they're free to enjoy whatever they like.

And then there are things that just make me go, "WTF?" M-Preg is one of those.

I mean, there are times when I figure you could stretch the series a bit and it would be possible. Plus, it's always fun to imagine what kind of bundle of joy our favorite pairings would produce, and there are some really creative people out there who can pull it off. (Of course, the best ones are professionals - Chris Claremount's original idea for Mystique and Destiny being Nightcrawler's biological parents is one of the most awsome things I've ever heard of)

But I don't understand all these totally random M-Preg fics that don't even try to explain how a boy can get pregenant. It's like it's just another fact of life, which, well - it's not.

And what's really got me confused is - why the hell are there so many of these seriously weird M-Preg fics popping up in the Digimon Frontier fandom, of all places? o.0

New Avatar: I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. Oh lord. Now I need to download it for better Koizilla icons.

Moar FF fan videos! Because I feel the earlier FFs don't get nearly the fan attention as the Playstation generation, I'm only linking to anything related to them.

FF4
Caramelldansen (Cain, Cecil, Rosa; Rydia, child and adult forms)
Rydia dancing, SD Cecil antics
Lucky Star-style Four Lords of the Elements

FF5
Ojama Job Change (Ojamajo DoReMi parody)
Caramelldansen (Everyone! Ahahaha, oh lord, they even included the Legend of the Crystals gang!)
Faris fan-art slideshow to "Pirates Ahoy!" (from the Dear Friends arranged album) Goddammit, fandom, the giant boobies don't work with her. Also, it's kinda sad how many of the artists I recognize.
Wut?
New World theme
Battle with Gilgamesh, with rather weak singing and lyrics.
Similar to the above: Main theme sung by Miku Hatsune
Pretty good violin cover of My Home Sweet Home and Harvest

FF6
Caramelldansen (Terra & Celes)
To FMA opening and ending
Terra's theme, new lyrics. While it's still one of my favorite Uematsu themes, I liked the Wanderer of Time lyrics more.
Toki no Hourousha/Wanderer of Time
Fan-version of TnH: Terra in Black. Wow, I've had this in mp3 form forever. You can find the mp3 here.
Danjo (pretty blah, honestly)
FF6 Lucky Star style. See if you can spot cameos from other games.
Sabin rap!
Speed-drawing of Chardanook, and pt 2. Warning for boobies.

Crossover!
Final Fantasy no Bara. This is absolute HILARIOUS if you're familiar with Rose of Versailles.
Ouran Host Club OP with a crossover omake
FF Battle Medley on violin

Avatar Episodes [Jul. 18th, 2008|10:46 pm]

So, when I was a middle schooler, I was a big Star Trek Deep Space Nine fan. And, well, one thing lead to another, and the series had to introduce a character, Ezri Dax, in the final season. So, the series writers had to concentrate on finishing up all the story arcs, and fleshing out Ezri's personality. It was... less than ideal.

Cut for great justice! And also spoilers )

I'll try to catch Ember Island Players in the morning. I'm playing D&D during the finale, but I have to rely on iTunes anyway (no cable) -- with luck, the finale will be in my inbox Sunday morning. If not... I shall have to resort to alternate methods. Arr.

Haw haw (why am I using this icon it's totally inappropriate)

So apparently the last time I watched Sweeney Todd I didn't quite realize just how LULZY it was.

I mean yeah there was the whole "By The Sea" sequences which is like... UTTER LULZ. And Mrs. Lovett is hilarious. But like, I didn't notice that after Todd ate one of Lovett's meat pies in Worst Pies In London he spent the entire rest of the song trying to spit that crap out (and all the roaches, good god). Or that the beggar woman was trying to convince Toby, of all people, to get Beadle Bamford and the police. Or that the blood was THAT ridiculous.

Or Snape humming OH GOD I'LL NEVER GET OVER THAT.

It's still a Great Movie from Greatland. What's Tim planning next? I know he's producing "9" (with Timur Bekmambetov), but I dunno nothing about what he's going to direct. Can we expect Helena to be there? How about Danny? Johnny might need a short break. ...oh no wait Johnny's gonna be in "Dark Shadows", whatever that is. Aaaand... oh, "Alice In Wonderland" - the Burton motion-capture version? I don't know about you guys but I think that sounds heavenly. And... OOH I DIDN'T KNOW HE'S REMAKING FRANKENWEENIE!!! ...IN STOP MOTION YOU GUYS THAT'S TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE. Okay how about I mark... 2011-2012, that sounds about right? Ooh ooh more Burtony stop motion yay yay *dance*

Oh. Lulz. Tim's older than my mom.

Need to reference something, can't find the info, so I'm poking at the F-list just to make sure. Has Officer Harper - you know, Robin's GCPD contact, introduced in the 'Face the Face' storyline - ever been given a first name? Is there a fandom-established name for her, or has nobody but me bothered to remember the dear girl?

And if she doesn't have a name, what do you guys think would be a good guess?
