Carrollton area book stores
I've noticed a severe lack of bookstores in Carrollton proper. Sure, there's Lewisvilles, Addison, Richardson, Plano and other surrounding municipalities willing to pick up the slack, but still, it's a damned shame that you end up having to go out of your way to find a bookstore. Well now, it appears that Half Price Books wants to open a store at Trinity Mills/PGBT & Josey, in the shopping center which also houses Target, Chili's, Ross, Petco, among other businesses. While shopping for cat supplies at Petco this weekend, I noticed that they have a petition sitting at the register, to allow Half Price Books to move into the shopping center. I would strongly urge anyone in the area (not just Carrollton resident, but Farmer's Branch, Dallas, Plano, etc) to go in and sign the petition, so that we can at long last have a bookstore within reasonable distance. Other than the Petco, I don't know if any of the other businesses have a petition book available on site to sign (feel free to comment if you know one, and I'll update the post with the name of the business), but by all means, please go sign the petition, and let the elected officials know that we want books, and we'd like to buy them close to home. | | Saturday, July 4th, 2009 | 12:29 am [voodoolimbo]

Anyone need moving boxes?
Free to a good home. I have several boxes (20+) in rather good condition, including two of the mid sized wardrobe boxes with the metal bar included. I also have several office type boxes that are broken down and need only tape to put them back into working order. Current Mood: curious | | Friday, June 26th, 2009 | 4:33 pm [dallasjen]

Blue cross doctors?
Does anybody had a recommendation for a GP in North Texas. I have blue cross blue shield and I know they have recommendations online but they don't have the number one thing I'm looking for. Does anybody know any doctors for whom medicine is not their primary response? Every doctor I've ever head, my family's ever had and friends have ever had have always reached for the prescription pad at the first high test result without looking at life style, diet and excercise etc. I did have 1 doctor who mentioned diets but his idea of dieting was fasting twice a week with only chicken broth for a year. I'm looking for a doctor who takes more of a hollistic healthy life approach so if anybody knows one that would be great!! | 12:22 am [xianghua]

Carvel
Thanks to old episodes of The Office, my husband wants a Fudgie the Whale cake from Carvel for Father's Day. And so far all I have found was a fridge of generic cakes in Wal-Mart in Plano. Called the store fronts in both Lewisville and Carrollton and both are closed. Anyone know where I can get one of these ice cream whale cakes? Thank you! x-posted ETA: I live in Carrollton but will be in Denton on Father's day, so anywhere around those two places would be awesome. | | Wednesday, June 10th, 2009 | 8:13 pm [spryghte]

Beware of scamming No Kill Shelters
Do not adopt from Halteman's Haven. We adopted a kitten and when it came time to get him fixed, Kelli Halteman decided to take it upon her self to not give our cat back. Our contract states that the kitten must be neutered by the end of June. Because we didn't have the money to have him altered this week when she scheduled it, we let her know it would be done next week when I got paid. She claimed that she would take care of it herself for us. We released our cat yesterday to be fixed and now find out that she is not giving the little guy back because we breached our contract. I will be sueing for our cat now as we love the little guy and did not breach the contract at all. Be warned that this no kill shelter does not abide by their contracts at all and will take your pet on a whim. *x-posted* | | Monday, June 1st, 2009 | 3:55 pm [dallasjen]

Dentist
Yes, I know there are dentists everywhere. However, I don't have insurance and I am deathly afraid of the dentist. In fact, typing the word dentist just made me cry a little. :( So, where can I go for dental care that is cheap and will be reasonably understanding of my fear? | | Monday, May 18th, 2009 | 1:07 pm [starswillfollow]

laundromats
What's the cleanest (by whatever standard you might measure that by) laundromat in the metroplex? My queen size down comforter (yes I realize we're approaching the zenith of summer shortly) is probably too big for my dryer and I'm too cheap to dry clean my machine washable ikea brand down comforter. Back in high school a friend of mine went to state with his science fair project involving swabbings and the resulting cultures from laundromats (don't ask - you don't want to know, especially if you have to use a laundromat) so cleanliness is very important for me. | | Thursday, April 30th, 2009 | 11:14 pm [hadlock]

utilities so noticing my electric bill more than doubled from last month, i called the electric company to find out my 12 month contract had expired and I was currently paying 18.9 cents per kwh(!). If I agreed to another 12 months they would lower it to 14.8 cents... vaugely remembering this website: http://www.powertochoose.org/I found out there's a company willing to sell me the SAME power with no additional wacky connection charges for 9.7 cents per kwh. Double check to see how much you're paying before the hot season kicks into high gear. You don't want to be paying double what you should for your electric bill. Anyone know of a website that does this for natural gas here in Texas? Or at least a listing of natural gas companies that serve the Dallas area? | | Sunday, April 26th, 2009 | 1:08 pm [misoranomegami]

Handicapped accessible limos?
A friend of my sister's is a high school senior this year and is getting ready for the prom. Only thing is both he and his date have heavy duty motorized wheelchairs and they haven't been able to find any limo services in the area equipped to handle 1 let alone 2 large wheel chairs. Does anyobody happen to know of one that might? Or barring that I wonder if there's anybody with a really nice car equipped to handle that who might be willing to rent their services for the night. His car is modified, but he's got a really old junky van and he was wanting to try to go in style. Current Mood: hopeful | 11:30 am [starswillfollow]

93.3 the Bone = DMB?
Dave Matthews is my Jesus, so I'm happy. My husband was curious to know whether this was for the DMB concert or if The Bone had changed it's format. | | Wednesday, April 15th, 2009 | 11:14 pm [eremiticsteam]

Free Hugs Day With all the protests and movements and campaigns going on that are so all about nothing, I have to wonder if anyone locally is giving any thought to the upcoming International Free Hugs Day on 04 July 2009. Any plans? Any groups doing anything for that day? | | Tuesday, April 14th, 2009 | 8:54 pm [hadlock]

Dallas Tea Party?
If you drive from downtown north on 75 you may have seen the home-made signs hanging from the overpasses. I don't know if they're still there, but they were still up on Saturday the 12th. Taken April 11th: Taken in Lakewood leaving Whole Foods on March 10th: Yes I'm aware it's not safe to take cell phone pics from a moving car while driving.... http://www.teapartyrevolution.com/http://dallasteaparty.orghttp://taxdayteaparty.com/There's some buzz about this on craigslist but nobody's claiming this for any one group. Which is bizarre because it's well organized, too well organized, like an astro-turfing company is behind it. All of the links go to protest stuff, but I haven't found any literature in particular trying to crucify anyone in particular or what kind of legislation would replace the Fed exactly. Sort of seems like they're trying to drum up Republican support. Anyone interested in discussing this? I don't watch TV so I don't know how much the local media has covered this. I'm kinda tempted to go, not in support, but because it seems like I miss out on every other notable event or protest in this town. Where can I pick up a modern looking couch (NEW! not craigslist!) for around $400 that's not Ikea? Also dresser @ $200. Ikea has some nice looking stuff but... it's Ikea; and I'm hoping someone has some good local suggestions. I've been to West Elm in the distant past but I don't think they have anything in the $400 range. | | Tuesday, March 31st, 2009 | 5:14 pm [rafdfw]
