I Was a Fool in Love

Another great gig experience highlighted by two live premieres, 8 and 12, and the personnel debut of Tristan Deppe (aka, Deppe the Younger) on bass guitar for 2, 3, 10 and 11.

(ABOVE: Pumpernickel Crusty!)

The duet with Lora Bloom went over very well and I'm toying with the idea of using our earlier home studio recording of this song as the opening track for the next CD. As it is, I seem to be recording more than a few songs that would work well as openers. Some middles and closers is what I really need.

Thanks to the Deppe family, the Highwire Gallery – Lisa on spirit machine and Matt on sound—and our opening act, the divinely elegant Thomas Nola et son Orchestre (with fantastic nuclear cover of "Sandra Lindsey"). Later that night, Thomas also concocted some delightful spaghetti sauce out of random cans he found in my pantry. Who knew that Bon Ami makes an excellent vegan substitute for parmesan cheese?

ALL PHOTOGRAPHS BY LISA SPERA. MORE OF THEM IN THE PICS SECTION OF MY PROFILE.

See ya'll in Fleetwood?? Remember...
UPCOMING CONCERTS

from David's myspace blog

Saturday, May 31, 2008
Alexander's German Delicatessen
11 Deysher Road
Fleetwood, Pennsylvania

This is an "unplugged" show, as in upright acoustic piano and vocal only!

Featuring surprise guest vocalists and duets.

Come see David put the pedal to the metal (sustain pedal, that is) at a club with goats in the backyard.

Get there early for some delicious schnitzel. Prosit! Gute Appetit!

Also, new HEATHEN HARVEST review of PSEUDO EROTICA AND BEYOND: 1986-1998">

An exceedingly well-written and praiseworthy review that may have even given me a title for my eventual autobiography. The Crucial Fig Leaf of Irony... I like the sound of that.

Thank you, Mr. Drengskap!

Here's the link:

READ ME, THEN GO TO davidewilliams.com AND BUY THE CD!

Some choice cuts =

"David E. Williams is the Noel Coward of Generation X, belonging squarely in the American gothic lineage of such figures as Edward Gorey, Diane Arbus, John Waters, David Lynch, Charles Addams and Charles Burns."

"There are certain recurrent themes in Williams' lyrics. Sexual deviation and violent death. Freaks and deformities. Pitifully thwarted desires and ambitions – these are not so much torch songs as blowtorch songs. And an unhealthy obsession with the evil doings of the Third Reich – this particular strand in Williams' writing reaches a climax on the grandiloquently apocalyptic production number 'Wotan Rains On A Plutocrat Parade', which is filled with demented white supremacist ravings, redeemed only by a crucial figleaf of irony."

"If Williams' chosen subject matter were less relentlessly offensive, less iredeemably bent, he'd probably be feted as a great singer-songwriter, along the lines of Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits or Jarvis Cocker. As it is, it's really a matter of personal taste as to whether you find Williams' personal brand of alienation in tune with your own. Myself, I got along with this album well enough to listen to all of it three times in a row on the very day it arrived."

David E. Williams on a Nirvana tribute?

Yes, David E. Williams on a Nirvana tribute.

If you ever wanted to know how I sound doin' the Cobain blues, you are hereby informed that I just covered "Heart-Shaped Box" for Montage of Heck: A Sinister Tribute to Nirvana. Organized by the fellow from Selbstmorder, this release is available from a number of labels, distributors and even as a free download for all you kids who weren't even born when that mythic shotgun married that mythic skull.

As for me, I had just turned 30 when Kurt (OR SOMEONE ELSE!) pulled the trigger, and I was having a bit of a breakdown myself: every time I looked at another human being, I automatically envisioned them with their entrails exposed. Seriously. It was a real problem and you can verify it with people who knew me at the time.

I remember being slightly irritated when I read that a contributor to Kurt's depression was the fact that his loser punk rock friends in Seattle made fun of him for buying a Lexus with his newly earned dough. My advice would have been to drive over them… forward, back… then drive over them again.

Well, a lot of people have written a lot of songs. And some of them are good. I guess I have to sing as many as possible since I'm the voice of a generation.

In the near future, I'll be telling you all about my cover song from the other side of the world (literally and figuratively): "Erlkonig" with music by Franz Schubert and lyric by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

For now, I really do "wish I could eat your cancer when you turn black." Here's the official word from Mr. Morder himself on how to get yourself this Nirvana tribute:

"Montage Of Heck: A Sinister Tribute To Nirvana"

So, the extreme tribute, dedicated to the works of Nirvana, has been completed and will be available shortly through the various labels involved. This is a release spanning through various underground, extreme genres, which is available for production and distribution by any underground, D.I.Y., or even net labels.

THIS IS THE FINAL LISTING OF BANDS AND TRACKS FOR THE TRIBUTE BUT NOT THE ACTUAL TRACKLISTING:
band links available on David's myspace blog

Let's Reanimate - Scentless Apprentice
Cuntworm - Territorial Pissings
Selbst-Morder - Don't Want It All
12225 Chacals - Sifting
The Hypodermic Eye - Paper Cuts
David E. Williams - Heart-Shaped Box
Shadows Remember His Toil - Moist Vagina
sarkofachocrss88 - Very Ape
Fire Walk With Me feat. 209 Sins - Something In The Way
Karmakumulator - Milk It
The Wealthy Primate - Radio-Friendly Unit Shifter
The Aquaholics - Pennyroyal Tea
Tetanus - Man Who Sold The World (covering Nirvana covering Bowie)
CLG - Coma As You Are
DemetriusGrave - On A Plain
Nippercreep - Floyd The Barber
Saul Turteltaub - Tourettes
Tim Page feat. Selbst-Morder - Oh, The Guilt

Free Download at: http://www.nowupload.com/c/mFq

If you would like to obtain a copy of the release, you can get in contact with any of these great labels for more information: FirstBreathDistro, Deadknife Records, Ratskin Records, Jerk Off Records, The Horror Of...Records, Kitty On Fire Records, NH D.I.Y. St. Records, Ocinatas Industries, Subconscious Manifestation Net Label, Brew Distribution, HumaN LarvaE Tapes, PickledWhaleMeat Records, and two other labels yet to be announced.
label links available on David's myspace blog

If you are involved with or know any underground labels who may be interested in carrying this release, feel free to pass the word along.

..*somewhat legal crap*
..The rights will be shared by all labels involved in the form of the overall .zip file containing all the artwork, audiofiles, etc. Labels agree that it can be sold, but only to cover production costs. The rights are available to any underground, independant label to release, not available for mass-production or professional pressing. The bands maintain their rights to their song as well, and can use it on other releases or however they see fit.

Thank you for your time and interest.
And a special thanks to all the bands, labels, and individuals who made this release happen

I can be reached through this myspace site-->>Selbst-Morder, by e-mail at ODmagazine@canada.com, or on MSN Messenger at solicitinghate@canada.com
..Mr. Morder
…onwards,downwards… ..

Photos, set lists, etc. from Boston and Philly concerts

Boston, January 25, 2008
Jacques Cabaret Underground

1. Sandra Lindsey
2. in sickness and in sickness
3. Sarah's Booted Boy
4. The Ballad of Bob Crane
5. Beautiful Brownshirted Man—lead vocal by Jerome Deppe
6. Bad Day Anyway
7. Here Comes the Cold Narrator
8. Gossip Séance (Séance Gossip)
9. Grey Balloon Masquerading
10. Kill Yourself in Cape May
11. White Noise – a song from Jerome's solo project! He sang lead vocal.
12. Hymn to the Genius of Idi Amin
13. Pumpernickel Crust – Jerome and David duet
14. Summer Wasn't Made for You and Me
15. I'm in Love with the Ambulance Driver

Jerome Deppe played electric guitar on 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 10, 11 and floor tom on 8 (our audience participation number). Yet another new version of "Bad Day Anyway" has arisen: vocal, piano and a kind of shimmery noir guitar part.

Pre-recorded synth tracks were used on 1, 2, 3 and 13. David used Thomas Nola's Yamaha piano on most of the others, a synth organ on 10 and a synth choir on 11.

We intended to have Jerome's son Tristan play bass guitar on four songs, but a perfect storm of Puritan law and the venue's self-loathing prevented him from entering the club.

Boston photos by Mr. Thomas Nola:

A note on Thomas Nola et son Orchestre, who also played on the bill (let us hope I not mischaracterize!):

Thomas' CD's combine traditional super-sophisticated songcraft with an almost (that's almost) free form post-psychedelic approach to arrangement. Once, while listening to the mildly chaotic break (down?) of "So Long, Lale Anderson", I thought rather senior citizenly to myself, "Hey, this is the sort of thing that happened when John Cale produced Nico on The Marble Index."

In a live setting (at least at this gig), things almost reached a point where the delicate architecture could have collapsed at any moment—wild bass solos, a big guy with a trumpet playing from beyond the fourth wall—all of this as we listeners tried to focus on a lyric about Paul Revere screwing Henry Pelham out of fame and fortune. It's a heck of a show!

Jerome and I and Orchestre member Melissey were invited onstage for the last three numbers: "In the Poppy Fields", the aforementioned "Lale Anderson" and Nola's version of my own "Sandra Lindsey". The latter song was performed twice that night (Jerome and I opened with the original version), and I must admit that Tommy whipped our asses on this one. After introducing it as "the most romantic song ever written" (gosh!), Nola sang and pounded keys with an intimidating rage while the rest of us chimed in "harmonies" a la the closing numbers at those mega charity concerts like Live Aid, Live 8, etc. I hope the video comes out, because, as the composer, I would be more than satisfied if those of you still listening accepted this version as definitive.

Thank you, Thomas. And all the best to you and Andrea for your hospitality, cooking and humor during my 4-day exile on Broadway. (Thank you also to the Universes, for having us on the bill for their CD release party.)

Philadelphia, February 4, 2008
The Balcony at the Trocadero

1. in sickness and in sickness
2. Sandra Lindsey
3. Sarah's Booted Boy
4. The Ballad of Bob Crane
5.
THE APPEAL OF DISCARDED ORTHODOXY: A TRIBUTE TO DAVID E. WILLIAMS

As some of you may already know, Old Europa Café is honoring me with a tribute release (on two CD's!) called THE APPEAL OF DISCARDED ORTHODOXY. That's right: a tribute release for someone who's not even dead! Maybe the weepy reaper snatched the wrong soul when he came swinging by our house a half a year ago. It would make a lot of sense. To me, at least.

Well, listen up. I like this record a lot: fine performances delivered by icons great and small. In fact, some versions are so superior to the originals that they fill me simultaneously with pride as a songwriter and humility as a performer.

This project took over two years to complete, but Old Europa Café finally has copies in stock ( click onto http://www.oldeuropacafe.com/main.php?nav=pd&prdct=8215 ) with other copies SOON TO BE AVAILABLE through yours truly or your favorite music distributor. Be prepared for further announcements.

Thank you to everyone who participated. Here is the official press release. Quite a roster of performers, if I do say so myself. Jeepers! I'm even on there:

Two generations of post-industrial and neo-folk artists, an all-star cast highlighted by Love Axis, Changes, Spiritual Front, Naevus with Rose McDowall, Shining Vril (John Murphy), Ernte and Foresta di Ferro cover songs by America's troubled and troubling troubadour.

38 tracks ranging from pure folk to dramatic pop to harsh noise on two disks separated as "Pop and Folk" and "Contra Pop and Folk."

This long-awaited international tribute, with artists from the U.S., the U.K., Belgium, Germany, Croatia, Greece, Italy and Poland also features: Aesthetic Meat Front, Albireon, Angel of Decay (Jon Canady of Deathpile), Artefactum & Horologium, Bleiburg, Circus Joy, Code Viore, David E. Williams (in tribute to himself!), Dead Man's Hill, Division S, Dogs Hate Monet, David Talento, Der Bekannte Post Industrielle Trompeter, Der Feuerkreiner, Ethel Mermaid, Jerome Deppe, Lark Blames with Rodolfo Protti, Lloyd James, Macelleria Mobile di Mezzanotte, Myoclonic Jerks, Nazi UFO Commander, Oneiric Imperium, Rome, Second Amendment (with Andrew King), Seelenblut, Spectre, Teatro Satanico, Testing Vault, The Lindbergh Baby, Thomas Nola et son Orchestre, Womb.

This is the cover:

Williams sings Patton for Bleiburg

D.E.W. sings lead vocal on "God of Battles", a track from Bleiburg's mammoth (12 hours/ 117 songs!!!) CD/DVD release Shadows Will Survive. The text for the piece is a poem by American World War II General George S. Patton, the nation's most mythic military figure and arguably one of her most lucid philosophers. Study and learn the poems of "Old Blood and Guts" at: http://www.pattonhq.com/unknown/chap14.html

Conceptualized and realized by Bleiburg's S. Rukavina, Shadows Will Survive also includes contributions by Douglas Pearce (Death in June), Kenji Siratori, The Grey Wolves and nearly two dozen other underground luminaries. Its ambitious length allegedly may earn it a place in the next Guinness Book of World Records, so buy it now and be part of history!! From Old Europa Café, THE ONLY RECORD LABEL THAT MATTERS:

http://www.oldeuropacafe.com/main.php?nav=pd&prdct=389

Bleiburg:
www.myspace.com/bleiburg
http://www.dark-transmission.de/

David contributes piano, organ, harpsichord and throat to new Naevus CD.

Mr. Williams proudly contributes to not one but two tracks on Naevus' hau-rockin' new masterpiece THE SILENT LIFE. As our hero succinctly commented on Naevus' myspace page: "If this record isn't the SGT. PEPPER'S of neofolk, then such a thing is impossible to create." Evoking the spirits of Argent, Manzarek and the guy from Iron Butterfly; David plays a heavily reverbed organ solo on "Castles in Spain", while his acoustic piano and synth-harpsichord anchor and embellish the driving melodic post punk of "Kill Your Friends". To the latter track, David also adds a backing vocal, allowing him the resume' highlight of singing along with the legendary Rose McDowall (albeit digitally from 3000 miles away). PLUS: John Murphy on drums, Matt Howden on very velvety violin and Jerome Deppe artwork on the cover. Why haven't you ordered yet?? http://www.hauruck.org/ or a distributor near you.

The out-of-print CD's are now available for download!!!

Out of print and officially unavailable for nearly half a decade, Williams' debut CD A HOUSE FOR THE DEAD AND A PORCH FOR THE DYING (Ospedale, 1994) and his second CD I HAVE FORGOTTEN HOW TO LOVE YOU (Cthulhu,1996) are now downloadable in mp3 format via SNOCAP on his MySpace profile page for $10 each! Individual songs from these releases are available for 75 cents each! (A small price to pay to discover the hidden meanings behind "Shadowy Lesbian Pornograph" and "Vaginal Interior Decorator"). It was these releases that earned Williams such hyperbolic accolades as "the greatest living musical genius to grace these shores since, well, since ever" (from THE BLACK FLAME) as well as all those creative comparisons to Liberace, Barry Manilow and Andrew Lloyd Weber in various stages of psychological depravity. Buy, listen and learn.

Local band Jupiter Fly-By celebrated the release of their Soccer Every Sunday CD by soliciting live interpretations of their songs from a wide cast of Philadelphia artists.

As Fly-By-guy Alex Strang pronounced David to be "one of the city's most accomplished and responsible (?) musicians," our hero launched into "Kings of Drone," recasting Strang's lyric to a piano version of the Police's "King of Pain." (Does this count as one of them there new-fangled "mash-ups"?)

With the song's moderately dissonant final chord droning on, David exploited his dark denoument with a litany of Strang/ Sting cliches, his sonorous baritone eerily evoking the cryptozoological climax of the Police's "Synchronicity II".

For a moment, the audience could sense the very presence of the Beast of Loch Ness. And demands for an encore ensued.

"I normally write historical ballads," said David. Faced with choosing an historical ballad about Idi Amin and one about Bob Crane, they opted again for the sad, sad tale of Hogan the Hero of Hedonism-- "meat on the pillow that could have been anyone."

"JUST FOR ONE DAY"
David E. Williams will perform "Heroes" at a David Bowie tribute event at
Rocket Cat Café (great coffee, pastries, etc!)
2001-3 Frankford Ave(corner of Frankford Avenue and Norris Streets)
in Fishtown, Philadelphia, PA,
Thursday, April 20, 6:30PM.

Mr. Williams will also assist Olivia Neutron Bomb as keyboard player in their rendition of "Kooks".

Other performers include Kilroy, Micronesia vs. Bilwa, Gemini Wolf, Djo, Barry, A.D.Amorosi, Wes Mattheu and the New Way Down, Zelda Pinwheel and Devin Greenwood.

For those of you too young to remember David Bowie, he’s the handsome gentleman who judges the modeling contest between Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson in Zoolander.

FURTHER EVIDENCE OF AN UNHERALDED MUSICAL GENIUS

Thus ends (well, sort of) Tony Dickie’s review of PSEUDO EROTICA AND BEYOND: 1986-1998 in the online extreme culture zine Compulsion.

UP ON DECK WITH NAZI UFO COMMANDER!

D.E.W. contributes a Bauhausian Arabesque guitar solo (played on keyboard, of course) and a 5/4 rhythm track (run through distortion, so it’s not progressive rock!) to "Mercer is My Name" on Strange Monasteries, the debut release of NAZI UFO COMMANDER on the world’s greatest record label, Old Europa Café.

If that’s not enough to encourage your immediate online purchase, read on from the official press release:

"Strange Monasteries is the initial communication to the fractured hive mind extant on this planet. This is Stage 1: Putrefaction. Only a small percentage of the population is capable of being hardlinked into the Greater Vision and Voice, because only they have had the Eruption of the Unconscious into the Sphere of Consciousness. Transmitting from Neuschwabenland South, Nazi UFO Commander is conjuring out of the chaos of space, radio waves and electronics a catalyst that will reunify the dissociated conscious by re-encoding imprints through sustained and attentive listening. In order to affect this reunification, the CD must be listened to in its entirety. To hear it is to know it. A very strange mix of space-industrial, UFO-radio-communication, beating & noisy alien soundtracks… Professionally printed CDR. Limited and on CD label numbered to 150 copies." For detailed track by track descriptions, go to www.naziufocommander.com.

To order, contact www.oldeuropacafe.com or enter "Nazi UFO Commander" (don’t worry about the government eavesdropping… if you’re on this site, you’re already f**ked.) into to find a distributor nearer to home.

PSEUDO EROTICA AND BEYOND, 1986-1998
NAMED "REISSUE OF THE YEAR"
BY OCCIDENTAL CONGRESS!

http://www.occidentalcongress.com/best_works/Playlist2005.htm

November News Update

Now on Old Europa Café !
David E. Williams
Pseudo Erotica and Beyond: 1986-1998

"It wasn't like anything I was hearing at the time, or even anything I would normally enjoy. It was clean, well-produced, and electronic. Still, something about it hooked me even before Williams' vocals kicked in. I couldn't tell you why. And when he started singing, I was hooked for good. Not only did David's deadpan voice not sound like anyone else's, he was writing the kind of lyrics I'd been unconsciously aching to hear — grim, hopeless, cruel, occasionally touching, and almost always hilarious (in a grim and hopeless sort of way)... For the first time in recent memory, the music actually excited me." - from the liner notes by Jim Knipfel

Nearly 2 decades after its original release, Williams’ debut EP comes to CD in all its degenerate glory, along with 19 previously unreleased and amazing tracks from the same period of perverse creativity. Hear Williams’ original deadpan lamentations of vomiting dogs, stolen glass eyes, and the rape of the retarded; set against an increasingly sophisticated musical backdrop of classic pop, dreary dirge, industrial, neoclassical and an early form of what would later be known as "dark ambient"! NOTE: Some of these songs were eliminated from earlier releases because of their political and sexual offensiveness. But now their time has come?

16 page booklet includes:
- Full Lyrics
- Liner Notes by Guitarist Jerome Deppe and Internationally Acclaimed Author Jim - Knipfel
- Selected Song Commentaries by Mr. Williams himself
- Vintage Photos

Track List
NOTE: None of these tracks appears on the full-length David E. Williams CD’s released during the same time period: A House for the Dead and a Porch for the Dying (Ospedale, USA, 1994) and I Have Forgotten How to Love You (Cthulhu, Germany, 1996).

Charlotte’s Glass Eye / My God and My Dog / Bad Day Anyway / Gift
Stillborn / Last Belch of the Fish / It Was April / No Fun Anymore
There is No Mud in Joyville / Soiled Bandages / The Oven
The 23 Definitions of Love / Portrait of Doktor Goebbels / The Little Dead Mermaid
Nativity of Skulls / Got So Many Women / Stephanie, I Forgive You
Musket / Wotan Rains on a Plutocrat Parade / Document (June 19, 1993)
Horse Ambulance / Eddie Waitkus / Lost Yellow Mitten

Just in time for the holidays…
Order yours directly from Mr. Williams at [paypal on his site]

Or send $14 postpaid to
David E. Williams, P.O. Box 2422, Philadelphia, PA 19147 USA

GERM AWARENESS II REPORT!
Bar Noir, Philadelphia, October 10, 2005

Playing his 7th show in 14 months, Mr. W. eschewed some of the "greatest hits" and let his freak flag fly with 3 cover songs and the live debut of an upbeat piano number about your favorite African dictator.

1. The Need for Less Sex in the World
2. Wildfire
(Cover of 1970’s Michael Murphey song about a horse that dies in a blizzard.
Guest Vocals by Karen and Heather of OLIVIA NEUTRON BOMB)
3. Hymn to the Genius of Idi Amin
(Stage debut of an unrecorded newer song)
4. The Ballad of Bob Crane
5. Beautiful Brownshirted Man
6. Legends of the S.S.
10. I Was a Fool in Love
11. I’m in Love with the Ambulance Driver
12. Not a Gear at All

Thanks to a.d., Mark, Needles, Emmett, the Qual posse, Matthew from Virginia (and his friend), Olivia Neutron Bomb, Oneiric Imperium, Tony Violence and Parasite Militia (who recognized "the folly of sound" and limited their contribution to a stunning video loop that played through the evening.) Williams. Whether advancing the theme in orchestral fashion or darkly contradicting a major key motive, his transcendent solos for "in sickness and in sickness" and "That Skirt’s Too Short For a Funeral, Honey" advanced these songs well beyond their pigeonholes of "gothic rock", "dark pop", or "neofolk". On the other hand, the disciplined baritone of his backing vocals often provided (bear with us as we stretch this metaphor a bit) an anchor for listeners cast about in the maelstrom of Williams’ very vocal id.
Before this all starts sounding like an obituary (editor-"too late!"), fans will be happy to learn of Mr. Deppe’s first solo album, a limited edition CD-R entitled The Absence of Light on Old Europa Café (the only record label that matters!) Here’s a semi-official press release: "Combines dreamy, haunting melodies with feelings of abandonment and loss. Post apocalyptic art rock with a touch of film noir and even an ambient version of a popular 60’s lounge song. Crafted and recorded entirely underground to accentuate the feelings of despair and finality."
http://www.oldeuropacafe.com

D.E.W. = M.C. for A.K. at G.B. + G.

The Andrew King performance introduced by D.E.W. on September 4 at Germ Books was an astounding success, probably the most popular event in the store’s history! About 40 people crammed into the store and another dozen or so had to be turned away (although some chose to remain outside on lawn chairs provided by a neighbor). Andrew was in good voice and the proper spirits were properly evoked. Thanks to Philly Fringe, Jennifer Bates, Scriabin, Tristan Deppe, Jerome Deppe, Babs and all who promoted on the web.

Next Month. . .The Return of Pseudo Erotica!
