palmer woods update

so some of you may remember this post, in which i asked for help in getting a picture of my parents' old house in palmer woods.

i was actually able to get back to michigan this past weekend, and went down to the neighborhood. as requested, pictures of the house!

this was the original picture, taken in the late 1960's:

I grew up two blocks from Budd Wheel (now ThyssenKrupp Budd) My great grandfather built the place, my grandfather worked on the assembly line. When Budd shut the gates, the company I worked for bought the contents and I cleaned Budd for auction and took apart the presses. When I was cleaning Budd out, I took a lot of stuff, I found a stack of pictures someone took and left. So here they are:

i'm hoping someone in this community could help me. in 1968 or 69, my parents bought this house in palmer woods:

they sold it and moved to birmingham in 1975, only two years before i was born (and yes, i'm still a little bitter that i never got to live there), and this is the only picture i have of it, and it's only half the house (it extends, as i recall, further to the left). i would do this myself, but i live in boston, and rarely get back to michigan - would anyone be willing to take a drive by and snap a photo of the full front and send it to me (bloonic at yahoo dot come)? it's easy enough to find - it's on wellesley drive, the second block off woodward, on the right. it doesn't even need to be great lighting or anything - just a picture of the house.

i know this sounds a little shady, "oh, someone go take a picture of this random house for me", but i swear there's nothing sinister at play - i'm compiling a gallery of the various homes my family have lived in over the years (and between the standard up-and-down-grades, plus divorces, remarrying, children, etc, there have been a lot), and this plus one other that my grandparents lived in, but is in a gated community behind the bloomfield hills library that i can't get into anymore (since, you know, they don't live there anymore), are the only two i'm missing.

and google streetview hasn't covered palmer woods yet.

"And You thought that urban decay was bad!" Thats the tagline of this blog and it fits quite well. As people move farther and farther away from the big cities in search of whatever it may be, sprawl is choking the life out of once thriving metro area's. Nothing could be more true of the The Detroit Area which is especially dense with over 50 suburbs surronding Detroit makeing what many from here refer to as "The Metro area". Older suburbs closer to Detroit are facing hard times as people spread out to newer ones and the business sectors follow.
In this blog, I will visit malls and large shopping plazas in the burbs of detroit that have been hit hard by sprawl. What happened to make it get this bad? Is there anything being done revitalize? What can be done in the future? I hope to bring fourth fond memories, make people think, and adress some very serious problems.
