Fic: Monstrosity and Miracle

...Wait, *this* is going to be the first thing I post to this community? Sorry about that, guys. I'm usually much...okay, not saner, but differently loopy. I'll dig out my older, less depressingly cliché stories sometime to prove it to you.

Monstrosity and Miracle
Rating: PG-13 (for to be on the safe side).
Genre: Angst/Romance/Hi I'm Riku and I'll be your vampire this evening.
Warnings: Riku spends forever being angsty and stubborn. Also? Vampires.
Summary: Riku sees only the monster in himself, never the miracle. Fortunately, Sora and Kairi see differently.

Monstrosity and Miracle

Hello. I've lurked for a while, but have only just joined. I've come bearing a fic, belated Christmas fic, based on a request for awkward cute teen fumbling.

Title: Island Triptych

Rating: R for fumbling? Maybe just PG-13, after all.

Word Count: About 7200, give or take a few

Summary: Our three favourite protagonists are just chilling on the Island. They angst, joke around, and figure things out. I restored this from a long lost draft, so I might have missed some errors. Please feel free to nitpick, and harass me about grammar.

Part One

Part Two

Part Three

Fic, Blindingly

Hello there! First post of mine; hope you enjoy. <3

Title: Blindingly
Fandom: Kingdom Hearts 2
Disclaimer: Kingdom Hearts does not belong to me. No profit is being made from fanfic.
Note(s): Guest starring Lucrecia as Riku's mother. Thus, she's a bit ooc, sorry about that. Sorry about Tidus, too.
Pairing: (eventual) Sora/Kairi/Riku <3
Summary: If Riku wakes up to find himself blind.

It's strange how Riku had suspected it was coming, yet when it comes it is such an unpleasant shock.

"I'm sorry. Your son's eyes are…"

Riku reaches up and waves his hand in his face, but that gesture means nothing, when he doesn't even know if his eyes are open or not.

-

Navigating the small children's island is slow, and painful. He can almost feel the hovering stares of his friends, and he hates it like anything. But whether it's because they knew how he feels about help or the look on his face, they don't approach, and when Riku arrives at the paopu tree, they don't come to sit beside him.

He sighs and leans his head back.

At least the waves sound the same.

-

"Riku!"

Riku hesitates with his hand on the doorknob, but doesn't turn. There is no point in turning.

"Don't forget your cane."

Riku sighs, a sound his mother couldn't hear, but she can see the defeated slump of his shoulders as he fumbles next to the door for the offending object.

-

Riku still wakes up expecting to open his eyes. He stays in bed an extra minute or ten, waiting for the sunlight to blind him, because he can feel it on his face. Gradually, he realizes that his eyes are open, but color is something forever lost to him.

He gets up, fumbles for his clothes, and prepares, with not altogether a little anxiety, to face another day.

-

Casually walking down the street, Kairi takes his hand. Riku frowns, because both Sora and Kairi had developed a habit of taking his hand and normally he would have been pleased, but there was nothing special to this handholding than guiding their blind friend.

But Riku can't bring himself to ask them to stop, if it makes them happy, and so contents himself to his discontentment.

-

"Hey Riku, throw me that blue cup, will you?" Tidus asks, constructing his masterpiece of a modern art sculpture; namely, throwing all his materials together in a mish-mash, claiming it to be modern art, and hoping he'd get a good grade.

There is no answer, and Tidus looks up, to where Riku is sitting, hands still on the blitzball he'd been twirling in his hands.

"Oh shit, I'm sorry, Riku, I—"

"It's fine." There is carefully no emotion in the statement, as Riku resumes playing with the blitzball, and Tidus could have punched himself.

"Idiot," Selphie mutters under her breath.

-

"One round, Sora."

Sora turns around, and Riku is holding the wooden sword in his lap, with his face turned down, so that Sora can see neither his eyes nor his expression. Something inside Sora's chest twists, but he answers, "…ok."

"Sora." It is a hiss of a breath, but Riku doesn't raise his face, "I'm not an invalid. One. Round."

Kairi watches until the end, and tries not to wince as Riku goes down, hard, and Riku starts laughing without any kind of amusement in his voice, and is there by his side as his shoulders shake and his voice turns to sobs.

-

Reading is frustratingly slow, and he doesn't know why he has to do it, except that his mother insists, and it's one thing he can do alone, without anyone's stares.

His fingers brush against another set of dots, and suddenly, sick of it all, he fumbles for his cup and throws it against the wall.

-

Lucrecia has to take a minute to process what she had seen.

Riku had exited the kitchen, without touching the walls, or trailing his fingers along surfaces, or shuffling with his hands in front of him.

He walks to the door, sure it is there, with his regular gait, as if—

Lucrecia bursts out of the kitchen, and down the corridor, where Riku puts on his shoes and grabs his cane, without missing a beat, and reaches for the doorknob without any fumbling, before she can call out to him.

She stares blankly at the door a moment before excitement catches up, and she rushes out the door.

On the street, she bumps into Riku's friend, and breathlessly explains to her what has occurred.

"…<st1:street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">Ms. Crescent</st1:address></st1:street>," Kairi begins, and Lucrecia doesn't like the look on her face, "Riku can cross the bridge at the children's island without moving his cane from side to side, to find the edges. He's—I was next to him. He was whispering to himself. He's counting his steps…."

Lucrecia's shoulders slump. Lucrecia asks softly, watching Riku fumble with a 3D puzzle in his hands, gaze straight ahead and unfocused.

"No change."

-

The curious sound of piano notes knocks Lucrecia out of her reverie, and she walks into the living room to see Riku sitting at the grand piano, pressing one key at a time with a look of concentration on his face.

Lucrecia swallows a giggle, and quietly creeps away.

-

Riku slows down when he hears Kairi (her quiet footsteps, the slight rustle of her clothes, her soft breathing) come up beside him, and he shifts his cane to his other hand so she can take his hand.

Their clasped hands rest comfortably between them as they talk, and they are soon joined by Sora, who takes the cane so he can replace it with his hand.

Sora swings their arms as they walk, and Riku almost tells Sora to give the cane to Kairi, because Sora is no doubt swinging the cane around; Sora always swings his arms, no matter what is in them save Keyblades. But he doesn't, and Riku is sure Sora is glaring at him and Kairi for laughing when he knocks something (sounds like a stack of boxes) over with the cane.

-

"Riku, pass me some of that clay on your left, please?" Selphie asks absently, staring at her mini sculpture, rubbing her fingers.

"Sure."

Selphie blinks at the block of clay in her hands, and looks over at Riku, nonchalantly bringing a cup to his lips, and Sora and Kairi just beyond, suppressing laughter.

-

"Riku! Throw me a ball! Third rack right from the door!"

"Which one?"

"Second from the left!" Wakka calls back without looking, knowing as he did that that ball was just slightly heavier, and might be their advantage to winning the game—

The ball bounces past, about four feet from where Wakka is standing, and he calls a "Thanks!" as he jogs out to get it.

-

"I win."

Riku stands over him, wooden practice sword held over one shoulder, a familiar smirk on his face even as his eyes stare way over his head.

"No fair! I was going easy on you!"

"Wanna go again, then?" Riku says, bringing the sword down, "Loser buys ice cream."

-

"Riku," Lucrecia says, and Riku freezes, because that is his mother's 'surprise' tone of voice that almost certainly meant disaster, "There's this…gathering. For—well, we should go."

Riku tries not to groan, in case his mother might be inclined to '"accidentally" whack him over the head with his cane again.

-

"Exactly what," Riku says, as Lucrecia guides him through the doorway, "is this gathering?"

"Well you know," Lucrecia dodges, as she sits him down.

Riku sighs, resting the cane on the floor and leaning his hands on it. He knows not to put it on the floor now because he might poke out people's ankles with it or trip people with it, as he learned from his mother's tirade after she'd whacked him over the head just to teach him. (He thinks there's still a hole in the carpet where the experiment fell when she tripped, but he hadn't yet checked to see if they'd gotten a new carpet.)

"It didn't say 'singing' on it anywhere, did it?" he asks apprehensively.

Lucrecia takes a little too long to answer, and Riku sighs.

-

Riku had breathed a huge sigh of relief (that Lucrecia had elbowed him for) when the people in charge only insisted on volunteers, and even though some were beyond horrible, at least he didn't have to sing. But for some reason, the people had insisted on reseating him, and now he had no one to complain to.

"They don't understand" was suddenly blurted out on his right, and he wasn't entirely sure if the statement was directed at him, so he chanced a "hmm?"

"They think it's just ok to play some crappy music and all that," the voice said, and Riku still wasn't sure if it was talking to him, "Cuz you know what? It's not ok, it's just…it's just…"

"Uh…what's your name?" Riku cautiously asks in the lull.

The petulant answer of "Mari" confirms that someone is, indeed, talking to him, and Riku is not-so-secretly relieved because he isn't an idiot who's talking to himself.

Mari prattles on on a bitter, angry tone that's worse than the horrible singing, and he shifts and fidgets in his seat, and wonders if she'd notice if he just got up and walked off.

-

"I can't say I do," Lucrecia answers politely. "He gets places fine on his own. I worried about the boat, at first, but he hasn't tried. He gets someone to take him."

"But think of all the trouble they could get into! They could fall into ditches, or walk into thorny bushes and…"

Lucrecia listens with polite interest as the anxious parent prattles on, and mildly says, "My Riku isn't like that," when the anxious parent pauses for a breath.

The anxious parent is staring at her with an anxious, probing stare, so Lucrecia feels compelled to answer, "I find Riku on the piano sometimes. He isn't playing anything, just pressing the keys in order. I think it's a sort of self-imposed training, teaching himself to recognize things by their sound. And yesterday," Lucrecia smiled, "he was playing 'Three Blind Mice.' It took him four tries to get it right, just those three notes put together. And when he did, he just sat back and sighed and. Smiled."

The anxious parent didn't say anything for a moment, before asking, "But…aren't you afraid that he'd walk into a wall?"

"Hmm? Oh no," Lucrecia answers, getting up, "he counts his steps, you see. And, excuse me, I think my son needs rescuing."

-

"But you understand, right?" Mari says softly, leaning her shoulder on his.

Fuck no I don't! Riku barely resists the urge to knock her over the head with his cane, and turns his head. "Mother." He makes what he hopes is a pleading face in the direction of her footsteps.

Thankfully, she seems to understand, as she says, "Shall we go, Riku?" and takes his upper arm, and pulls him away from Mari. Riku lets himself be pulled, and almost drags Lucrecia in the direction he hopes the door is.

Lucrecia is laughing as she says, "That bad?"

"Mother, please. Don't take me to anything like this ever again."

-

"Here, Riku. It's a drink. You like soda, right?"

There is condescension in that voice, almost overrun by malice, for all that his classmate wants to sound friendly and nonchalant.

"How kind." Riku keeps his hands in his lap. "What brought this on?"

"Just a friendly gesture."

"Really."

"You don't like soda?"

It is a challenge (if a rather stupid one), but Riku hears footsteps coming up behind him. Riku doesn't say anything, just waits, and a moment later, the boy says, "Wait. I think I just saw a bug in this one. Never mind."

Riku listens to the footsteps of the boy, rapidly striding away, and turns his head to listen for the softer footfalls, "Sora."

The creeping-away footsteps freeze, and then the weight of the footfalls shift into what Riku imagines is an embarrassed manner, "How did you know?"

"I always know," Riku drawls, and hears a snort as Sora walks over and sits next to him.

After a moment, Riku asks, "Was there really a bug in that drink?"

"I'm not sure," Sora admits. "But it couldn't have been anything good."

Riku doesn't dispute it, and entertains himself by imagining the glare on Sora's face that drove the other boy away, and then retrieving his cane and standing up, "Kairi's calling."

"Huh?" Sora looks around, and there she is. He smiles, because Riku really is the type who can overcome anything, and follows.

-

Riku exhales heavily as the kiss breaks off, a mashing of lips that was no less a kiss, and hastily removes his hand from Sora's shoulder and his other hand from Kairi's hair.

Draws in a breath when Kairi's tongue trails down his jaw and Sora gently pushes him onto the bed.

"Sora. Kairi."

He feels them draw back a little, and roughly tells himself it's stupid to be disappointed, because—

"Riku." There is something like admonishment in her words, and Riku wonders what kind of face she is making, because right now he has no. idea.

"We've been waiting forever." Sora says, close to his ear, and Riku only just manages not to jerk away, because to Sora physical rejections are telling.

Riku tries to say something, but right now his emotions, his senses, his brain is in a mush and he knows there was something he had to say but can't recall what it is.

"You let us, didn't you?" Kairi says softly, and Riku detects the disappointment in her voice and the painful feeling of Kairi not touching him, because right now the gap between them seems awkward, endless—"the handholding. And the touching. And the teasing."

"I—I thought—"

"What?"

Riku can't answer, because if he voiced what had been his doubts, there would be no taking it back. And he can't, can't let it fall from his own lips that he'd distrusted them, distrusted their feelings. Because he'd been sure it was out of pity.

He feels Kairi shifting, as if she is going to leave, and manages to croak out a "wait."

There is suddenly a very scary silence as the two of them turn back to his face and they are watching, with an intentness that Riku can no less feel than if he'd been able to see.

"Wait," Riku repeats softly, because he doesn't want them to go, and yet—

Then Kairi's lips are on his again, and she brushes his hair back from his forehead and sighs and says, "Just trust us."

"We love you." Sora adds from beside him, taking his hand. "We did before."

Then Sora kisses him, too, and mumbles into his mouth, "And we still do."

Kairi's hand is on his arm and Sora's is on his hand, and they both feel Riku force himself to relax, and they smile. "If it's too much right now, we can take it slowly," Kairi teases, and Sora laughs, and Riku blushes, and he looks so cute.

But they love him too much to drive him away with their impatience, even if he was thickheaded enough not to have gotten it, these last long months, but they are willing to wait, and to take their time convincing him.

When they kiss him again, he doesn't pull away.

In the middle. First dividing then reuniting them. Holding their hands together, she prayed for the strength of hearts to persevere despite the pitch black that was tugging at his heart, taking over, swallowing him whole.

It would come from his left. Always.

x

No. This time, Kairi was right.
Title: Bright Enough to Blind
Rating: PG-13
Word count: 1,838
A/N: Set post KH2, sometimes even the moonlight is bright enough to blind.
For prompt:- Sora/Riku/Kairi: Blindfold - "wrap the night around me"

There are times when the sultry evenings have given way to true night, bright and clear and silent, with the stars awash across the heavens like the foam on the waves below; times when the moon is brighter and more pure than any sun-star, that he goes down to the beach and sits at the edge of the water watching the breakers roll.

He tosses off his jacket and seats himself on the sand, his toes curling and uncurling, digging patterns in the white. It feels like nothing, like the world has fallen away to just him and the waves and the play of moonlight on the water. If he closes his eyes it's like being back in the kingdom of darkness, on a silver beach with the light of Heaven shining untouchable far away. Just the memory of it twists inside of him and makes his eyes ache and his heart burn.

He picks at the strip of cloth he holds in one hand, wrapped tight around his palm so that it nips the skin between his thumb and forefinger. The end of it is loose and he pulls at it, unwinding it slowly until he can stretch it tight between his fists, testing the strength of the fabric. It's black ribbon, so dense that its weave denies all light. He snaps it tight and clenches his fingers around the trailing ends.

Sometimes it hurts so bad.

Sometimes when he's walking along the beach with the hot wind in his hair and the scent of the palm trees rough and sweet and earthen in his nose, when he can hear the children playing and the birds crying and Sora joking and Kairi dancing; when she turns her head and her laughter on the wind almost breaks his heart. She's so beautiful and gentle he wants to fall to his knees and kiss her hands.

He knows then that he is not worthy of them. He with his darkness and his guilt and his tainted, dirty heart. He is strong and capable and he will do the things that need doing because someone has to. Better that he with his blood-stained hands be the one to touch the darkness than them, because their light should never have to see the things that he has seen. Do the things that he has done.

"Riku...?"

The voice almost makes him jump, and it is hard to resist the urge to hide somewhere, somehow, in this clean, open stretch of beach.

"What are you doing...?"

He turns and they are there. Sora's eyes full of the reflected starlight, the smile that curves his lips touched with concern, Kairi peering from around his shoulder. He does not know how they came so close without him noticing, but then, he has always been blind to them.

He makes to speak and finds silence instead. To tell them why he is here, but there are no words for the darkness that he feels coiling inside him. No words for the yearning, for the pride, for the emptiness that twists and the desperate, debilitating fear of losing them that unmans him quite so completely.

Sora's eyes fall to the cloth in his hands, to the blindfold he wore so long ago, the symbol of all his sins. Riku's fists clench around it, drawing it into his lap as though he can hide it from them.

"I..." he says, and Kairi steps forward, around Sora, shoving him lightly on the shoulder to move him. Sora glances at her, his face a comical mask of surprise.

"Riku?" she says, kneeling in the sand between his knees. He looks up at her, feeling that terrible, treacherous weakness tightening his throat. He can see the glow of their far-off homes reflected in her eyes so warm and bright it almost blinds him.

"I," he says, and her hands settle on his knees, squeezing softly. "I can't..."

She smiles and it burns.

"It's..."

It's all too much, he wants to say. You're too bright. It's all too bright. It hurts my eyes.

Instead, the words fail, catching in his throat like stones. He looks down at the sand between them, at the grains of it that cling to her knees and the hem of her dress. Her skin is so smooth and suddenly he wants to touch her. Instead he tightens his fists and the cloth between his fingers creaks with the pressure.

"Riku!" says Sora suddenly. "Come on, Riku. It's okay. You can tell us."

He wants to snap at Sora, because that's all of the problem, all of it, and sometimes Sora just doesn't get that everything can't be fixed with a smile and a hug and a stupid promise. Promises damn you to hell and bind you so tight you can't breathe because you can't keep them but you can't not. You can't break a promise like that but you shouldn't have made it in the first place because you don't have what it takes to keep it.

Instead he says, "What would you know, dumbass?"

Sora jumps indignantly, bristling and Riku wants to laugh-cry at the familiarity of it.

"You two..." Kairi says, and her voice is almost lost beneath the rush and hiss of the waves.

Sora winces and Riku reaches out a hand to place it gently on top of her own.

"Sorry," he whispers and that makes her shake her head and squeeze his knees again beneath her tiny palms.

"Is that it?" asks Sora suddenly. "Is it that again? It's that blindfold isn't it? It just keeps on reminding you of the darkness. You should throw it away, Riku."

"I can't," he replies quietly.

He expects Sora to reply, to argue, to contradict him, but instead there is silence and from the shift of Kairi's shadow he sees her exchange glances with the other youth.

"It's okay, Riku, we understand," she says, and it makes him want to take her in his arms and bury his face in her softness and just hide away. "The darkness, it's a part of you. But it isn't you. It will never be you, and it never was. You're you. And whoever, or whatever that is, we love you."

Sometimes, he just wants to cry, because she's so damned beautiful, and he doesn't deserve this, them, anything. Instead, he deliberately makes himself loosen the grip he has on her hand because he must be hurting her with his strength, even though she hasn't said anything.

"I want..." he whispers. "I...sometimes. It just. It's just too bright." And then he hangs his head, looking down at the sand, and refuses to look up again in case he sees the inevitable in her eyes.

"Hush," she says, pulling her hands from his, and for a cold-terror moment he thinks she will leave him. "Give it to me."

She pulls at his fingers, uncurling them from the length of cloth and pulling the material from his grasp. He lets her take it, because even if she throws it away he knows it will come back to him. But she doesn't throw it away. Instead she pushes his chin up with the back of her hand so that he has to look at her face, and she smiles that blinding, beautiful smile of hers.

"If you prefer the night, that's okay too. We'll still be here."

Softly, so softly, she stretches the black cloth between her hands and leans forward to lay it over his eyes. He feels her shift up onto her knees so that she can reach around the back of his head to tie the ends. Her hands are soft as she smoothes his hair flat beneath the knot and then she sits back on her heels.

"Is that better?" she says and it hurts, it hurts so much that he thinks he might cry and he's glad of the blindfold because it will hide his tears.

He wants to speak, wants to tell them both how much it hurts, but that it hurts because they love him and not because they don't, and that he'd do anything, anything for them if only they'd ask. But he doesn't, because the words won't come and all he can do is nod his head, his mouth open to mask the ragged breath that would otherwise sound suspiciously like he was losing it.

He feels her hands on his arms, the smooth warmth of her palms running over his skin and when she leans forward to kiss him all he can think is how soft she is. Her kiss is gentle and sweet, her hands lifting to rest on his cheeks, fingers lacing between the strands of his hair. He breathes in the nearness of her, the heat and the scent of the raspberry soap she uses, and his hands come up to rest on her hips.

She draws back and he wonders if it is over, and doesn't dare to ask in case it is. She shifts and he feels the flex of muscles beneath skin, hears the puffing sigh of shifting sand beneath Sora's feet as he approaches. He feels the youth settle behind him, his knees on either side of Riku's slim hips, and draws in a deep breath as the boy's hands slip around his flanks and up his chest.

Sora's lips are soft on his neck and his breath washes hot as he whispers, "S'okay. We get it. If you need it, that's okay. We'll do whatever you need."

And that is how he surrenders to them as the tightness in his chest overwhelms him and he lets his head fall back and his shoulders rest against Sora's chest. Kairi's lips are on his cheeks and his mouth, and her fingers are tracing the swell of his muscles making his breath turn ragged with more than tears.

Between them they wrap the night around him in soft touches and gentle caresses, kisses that trail across his skin and the enfolding warmth of their arms encircling him. Later, when he comes beneath Sora's insistent fingers and Kairi's lips, his cry stolen away by her kiss, he does not fall because they are both there to catch him.

Afterwards he lies back in Sora's embrace, Kairi a gentle weight across his thighs, and they listen to the lap and hiss of the waves on the sand together. They do not speak, and when Riku reaches up and pulls the blindfold from his eyes, blinking against the moonlight, Kairi leans up to take the fabric from his hands and kiss his eyelids softly. She does not mention the taste of salt beneath her lips, or the shudder that passes through him as he pulls her tight against his chest and leans them both back into Sora's arms.

They lie together in a darkness made beautiful by the stars burning high overhead, and it seems to them all that the moonlight on the water is bright enough to blind.

It's some threesome pr0ns! Been working on this one for awhile; finally hunkered down and finished it! Sooo, this OT3 fic resulted! Teenage awkwardness for the win.
Crossposted to kh_het and underourblanket. Apologies if you see it a few times!

Kairi and I were thinking of pitching a tent tonight.

One slash, then another and another, and the Neoshadow before him evaporated into black dust. He could still smell the acrid burning scent from Mushu's fireball attack. They had gotten so used to fighting, it all came second nature.

Heh, I'm sure that'll be fun for you guys.

If he could concentrate, that was. Riku was finding it more difficult than he'd like to admit. Twice already Donald and Goofy had warned him to watch his back. A Nightwalker nearly took off his arm one of those times.

Well, actually, I asked Kairi about it, and she said okay. So do you want to join us?

Luckily, the Assault Rider's gallops thundering behind him gave him fair enough warning this time. He spun around just in time to dodge the jab with the lance. While the Assault Rider tumbled over its own hooves, he slammed his foot down on its lance.

What do you mean, join you?

"Sora, it's open!" he yelled.

His friend leaped high and landed on the Heartless's back, stabbing his Keyblade in the small space between its horse body and armor. The Assault Rider shook, then disintegrated soundlessly. Sora flashed him the usual grin.

You know. All three of us. I mean, I know you told me once about Kairi...

Riku wished he'd never mentioned it in the first place. Because if he hadn't Sora wouldn't have asked him about tonight, and he wouldn't be stuck thinking about it. It was completely breaking his concentration. He wondered if Sora was distracted, too, or if it was just him.

That's beside the point. I thought that was just supposed to be your guys'...thing. You're together, after all.

He thought maybe he was just overreacting. He could've been wrong about the tents and the close-door nights all along. Heh, it'd be ironically appropriate if it ended up being nothing but telling jokes and stories. His wandering thoughts brought him out of the immediacy of battle.

Well, you're our friend, too. We thought you might like it. Just to...see, I guess.

Another Nightwalker. He didn't have time to block this one, and its claws swiped a good chunk of skin off his arm. Grimacing, he knocked it away with Way to the Dawn. Donald was already raising his staff for a cure spell.

So you're coming, right? I mean, it's not like you're scared or anything.

Of course he wasn't scared! If there was any time to be scared, it was right now, fighting for his life. It seemed bizarre to Riku that the battles against the Heartless felt more normal than "normal" grown-up things: finishing school; making his own breakfast; nights in tents.

Donald's cure spell took effect, and the skin re-knitted over his arm.

Yeah, I'll be there.

------

As the sun began to sink beyond the bamboo groves, Riku sank his feet and then his knees into the chilly lake water. It wasn't the cleanest water he'd seen, but it was clean enough to wash off the grime and sweat of today's battle. Shedding his shirt and throwing it onto his pile of already-discarded clothes, he slipped the rest of the way into the lake.

He had to fight to keep his teeth from chattering. Taking care not to get his hair wet, he splashed water up and down his arms. The motion reminded him of how he'd been injured there, and he mentally chided himself again. It'd been stupid for him to let his guard down like that in the first place. Stupid for Sora to ask him that at all. Why doesn't he just get that I'm fine with him and Kairi together?

Because he was fine with it, he told himself. It certainly wasn't like the thought of getting warm and curled up with an extra body or two was sounding better and better. That was just because the lake was so cold.

Well, if I'm going to do this, I might as well be clean for it. Riku scrubbed himself with more vigor, almost angry with himself for being so paranoid. To adults, this came as easy as...well, taking a bath. If he could handle fighting hordes of Heartless, he could handle this. It was just spending the night with his two best friends. Intimately. At their request.

He groaned, shuddering as he splashed cold water onto his face. You know, never mind. I just won't go. They'll manage fine without me.

"Hey man, you okay?"

The water around Riku splashed as he nearly leapt out of the lake itself. His surprise dissipated at turning and seeing that the voice belonged to a small red dragon standing on shore. "Sheesh, Mushu. What are you doing out here?"

"Oh, Mulan sent me to check on you 'cause she was worried when you got injured or somethin'." Mushu seemed to wave it off. "And you weren't in the inn so I had to hike around. Why're you so jumpy?"

"It's nothing," Riku grumbled. Not that he didn't appreciate Mushu's concern, but he wasn't exactly comfortable talking to the guardian while buck-naked in a lake.

The dragon began to walk in a circle around his clothes pile. "If you ask me, you need to relax a bit. Just chill. I mean, what've you got to be all jumpy about? You've got all your friends helpin' you in fights, and you're the toughest guy out there! He twirled a whisker between his claws. "Well next to me, of course."

"Of course." Riku cocked an eyebrow at him. "And I think I should thank you for the compliment."

"That's right you should! Now stop mopin' around here before Mulan gets on my case any more."

Riku considered all this for a moment. A spark of determination seemed to form from the dragon's words, and he decided to run with it. "You know what? You're right. I will go 'chill' for a bit."

"Now that's what I'm talkin' about!" Confident that his "mission" was a success, Mushu jaunted off through the grass, allowing Riku to climb out of the lake and locate his towel.

------

Riku found the tent pitched near the gummi ship transport spot. It was a very large tent; a far cry from the tiny things he'd first slept in almost...three years ago? But they'd seemed perfectly comfortable back then. He couldn't really remember when they started buying the bigger ones.

As he approached, he could hear muted whispers and laughs from inside. There was some kind of light from within, as he could see their silhouettes projected against the canvas. Riku started to approach, but the determination that got him this far seemed to peter out now, and he stopped short.

He felt like someone had grabbed his insides and twisted them tight. There was no use denying that he'd sometimes thought about spending that kind of time with Kairi, and he wasn't quite sure what to think about Sora. But at seeing their shadows dance against the tent, the twist felt more like fear than jealousy. If he screwed up, would their friendship be different? If he was too good, would Kairi regret being with Sora? Would Sora resent him?

So he paced back and forth from the tent, not sure whether leaving was wise or cowardly, or staying was comforting or terrifying. It's stupid to be scared of stuff like that. But it'd be worse if I completely ruin what they have. What do they even have? I barely know!

Riku paced until his thoughts became so blurred they couldn't drown out the crickets anymore. He almost turned on his heel to walk away; telling himself he couldn't deal with this now, and he could always apologize later. But a voice stopped him.

"Hey look, it's Riku! He finally made it!"

He turned to see Sora's head poking out of the tent, grinning with way too much enthusiasm for the late hour. He waved Riku towards the tent. "Come on! What took you so long?"

So much for backing out now. Deciding this was fate making his decision for him, he put on a smile. "Just taking a late bath."

"Yeah, yeah," Sora's tone chided him a little. "Oh, make sure you take off your shoes before coming in." He pointed to the two pairs already outside the tent. Riku pulled off his own boots and set them aside before hunching down to follow Sora inside.

The "floor" of the tent was completely covered in pillows and blankets; far more than would've been enough for two people. They must've 'borrowed' some extras from the gummi ship. Kairi clutched the flashlight, their only source of illumination in the night. Riku sat cross-legged next to the two in a makeshift circle, unable to tear his gaze away from Kairi for a long minute.

"Riku, how's your arm?" she asked.

"Oh, it's fine," he insisted, giving it a flex. "Nothing a cure spell couldn't fix. Why's everyone so terrified for me?"

Kairi gave him a confused smile. "Terrified? I just wanted to make sure it wasn't hurting."

"Mushu just asked the same thing on Mulan's behalf."

Sora smirked. "Oh, Mulan always gets worried when someone gets so much as a scratch. She did that when I was fifteen, too."

To Riku, his friends looked strange in the dancing light, but not necessarily a bad strange. "It's hard to believe it's already been three years."

"Yeah. We'll all changing, but sometimes it seems the worlds all stay the same," Sora sighed. The smile didn't leave his face. "But I don't mind. I like it better that way."

"I will say that maturity makes you more philosophical. It's almost...spooky!" Kairi emphasized the last word by holding the flashlight beneath her chin and contorting her face.

Sora burst into laughter, and Riku found it hard to stifle his own. This was hardly what he was expecting, but perhaps he really had been wrong about what they did on nights like these. It was just jokes and stories all along, and he breathed a little easier because of it. The disappointment in the back of his throat was easily ignored. Grabbing the flashlight from Kairi, he imitated her face with a bit of mockery. "Wooo, I am Kairi, and I will haaaaunt your darkest nightmares!"

Despite nearly doubling over with laughter, Sora managed to grab the flashlight next and use it to spotlight his hand and arm in silhouette. "Oh yeah, well I am the GREAT AND POWERFUL MUSHU!" he mimicked, puppeting the words with his hand. "I have chosen YOU, Keyblade bearers, as my minions in my fight against the Heartless!"

Now none of them could bother hiding the giggles. The flashlight got lost somewhere in the tangle of blankets, as the small space forced them to nearly collapse on each other. Although still recovering, Riku managed to locate it again. "Haha...you know, I didn't think you could bring a flashlight here. It's not like this world knows what they are."

Sora stretched, and replied, "It's better than having a lantern and accidentally catching the tent on fire."

"Although here they do have some oils and stuff that make the fire smell nice," Kairi mused.

"Not going to matter much if the tent burns down," Sora reminded her, and started to strip off his jacket for the heat.

Riku fiddled with the flashlight, smiling as their shadows danced in warped arcs above them. "Good thing you think of everything, huh Sora?"

"Well, maybe not everything..."

"Huh?"

Then Riku noticed it. Sora hadn't stopped at taking off his jacket, and now crumpled his shirt into a ball and tossed it into the tent corner. His hands moved down to unbuckle his belt. "I think we're ready to start now, huh?"

"Yeah, I think so," Kairi replied, and Riku felt something in his throat bounce. The vague light was enough to reveal a hand unzipping her dress. And then the belt slid off and the dress came away completely, and it was all happening too fast for his brain to process. Kairi still seemed a bit self-conscious, crossing her arms over her bare chest. "Come on, Riku, take off your clothes," she said with a bit of a giggle.

"Oh, right," he half-mumbled, and started to pull off his jacket. He undressed himself with every ounce of casualness he could muster, and succeeded at least in detaching his emotions from it. As he moved down to the belt and pants, Sora and Kairi drew the circle in tighter, leaning in as if sharing a secret, and perhaps they were. Riku set the flashlight down between them as he stripped off the remainder of his clothes. "I'm still not exactly sure why you guys...asked me," he ventured.

Sora rubbed the back of his head, his expression just a tad sheepish. "I told you. You're our friend, and we thought it would be fun."

"Plus, we just thought..." Kairi covered her mouth to stifle more giggles.

"What?" Riku pressed, leaning in closer.

Kairi took a moment to recover herself. "Well, Sora – not I, but...we thought that since you were older and more experienced, you could show us some things."

Riku had had his internal conflicts before, but this made both sides take a nosedive into complete dismay. Experience? What experience? I've had just as much time to practice as they have! And it was probably even less so, as the reach of his knowledge extended to what he could do with his hand, and a girl from Twilight Town he'd known for a few months.

Still, at this point, backing out and having to live that down from Kairi and Sora was a worse option.

"I should have expected ulterior motives. Well, maybe I can show you some things..." He stretched out in what he hoped looked like a carefree manner. "But I think we need to warm up first."

"Yeah," Kairi agreed, and leaned up to kiss him. Even though he saw it coming, he still couldn't seem to call up the proper reaction. She didn't kiss his lips, but the side of his mouth, and held it there before planting continuous kisses up his jaw line. He barely started to register that hesitant pressure on his face before Sora crept up the other side of him. Not kissing, just exploring the side of his neck, as if looking for a good place to touch down. He tried to swallow back something dry in his throat, but it remained.

"How about I watch just you two for a bit? Then I'll know where you guys need work," he blurted. It was as good an excuse as any.

"Okay, but you better jump in before we get too far," Sora warned.

Kairi cupped her hands over her mouth again as if not really believing that Riku was going to be their audience. Riku couldn't quite believe it either but for now it gave him a little more time to figure out what he was going to do. The idea of screwing up whatever it was they had didn't feel much better than the realization that he did want to have sex with them.

Sora wrapped his arms around Kairi from the side, and mumbled something close to her ear that made her laugh harder. He then leaned over to kiss behind her ear, but she moved and he missed, hitting the side of her nose instead. More laughter, and the two of them lost their balance and tumbled over into the pile of blankets.

Riku wouldn't call either of them "skilled" by any stretch of the imagination. Sometimes Sora's kisses missed, or he accidentally squeezed too hard, earning him a knee-jerk kick in the side. Sometimes Kairi's gaze would stray back to Riku, and she'd burst into too much laughter for Sora to really accomplish anything. But they didn't care much about the specifics, and Sora seemed to have learned enough to get small gasps and moans out of Kairi though touch alone. In turn, the expression on Sora's face turned dopier with every response he coaxed out of her. The tent seemed unnaturally close and warm, and Riku felt sweat starting to bead on his forehead. And they haven't even gotten below the belt yet...

But they were getting there fast. Sora moved his head down from her face to her chest to suck on one nipple, earning a brief squeak out of her. His free hand wandered down to squeeze at her thigh, while her hands traveled the opposite direction to tangle in his brown spikes. They remained like that for awhile, until Kairi risked another look at Riku and burst into more giggles.

"Hey, come on!" Sora said, his concentration broken. "You gotta pay attention, or I'll do that one thing again!"

Riku managed to shake himself out of his trance long enough to ask, "What one thing?"

"Oh, Sora!—"

"See, if you just touch this one spot here—" And Sora lightly brushed a thumb just above the inside of her right thigh.

"EEEP!" Kairi let out a loud squeak and hitched her legs up as if to curl into a ball.

"I found it completely by accident," Sora said with a grin. "And look, you can keep doing it over and over..."

"I didn't even kno-EEEP!" Kairi responded and curled the same as before as he touched her there again. "This is so not fEEEP!" On the last one, her hips gave a bit of a twitch upwards.

The action reminded Riku that he needed to do more than just watch. He almost unconsciously began to stroke himself, squirming a bit so that he was enough behind the pillows for them to not notice. While he didn't know where all the good spots were on Sora and Kairi, he knew how to take care of himself.

Except it wasn't quite working. Sora and Kairi were getting faster and more desperate, as Kairi had counterattacked by sitting up and getting between his legs to fondle his balls. This produced an extensive whine of pleasure from Sora before his mouth just hung open. Riku felt mentally aroused, but somehow couldn't get his body to follow suit. The blood was pumping in his chest from nervousness too hard for it to go anywhere else, and no matter how he worked his hand, he couldn't produce anything but sore skin.

"He likes this," Kairi stage-whispered to him.

"Oh yeah..." Sora slurred, although now he only emphasized the obvious, as he was becoming hard alarmingly fast. She continued to roll the loose skin in her palm, causing Sora's mumbles to turn into long and pleased groans. "R-Riku...you promised you'd jump in!..."

"Right now?" Riku choked. He was sweating and pumping faster than ever, but still too flaccid.

Sora seemed to have trouble forming coherent sentences. "Gotta show me how...last long! I-I always come too..." As if fulfilling his own prophecy, Sora's hips bucked wildly, and he orgasmed with a loud moan, barely more than a minute after becoming hard. Kairi moved just in time to avoid getting it all over her arm.

After the pleasant exhilaration washed off his face, Sora relaxed, although he sounded disappointed. "So can you show me how to last longer, Riku? I always come too fast, and I don't even mean to." The disappointment turned to embarrassment. "Sometimes before I even get inside her."

"It still feels really good when you do it other ways," Kairi reminded him, folding up the sheet with Sora's semen on it and tossing it outside the tent. Once back inside, she turned to Riku with great interest. "Come on, don't just please yourself in the corner all night! Share with us!"

Sora flopped into a spent heap all over the pillows. "Yeah, I wanna see if we can find any weird spots on you, too."

Riku balked. "I, uh..."

Kairi was advancing on him, her face still flushed red and her body still damp with sweat. Sora edged closer too, tired but not exhausted enough to refuse further play. There was no way he could stall any longer.

"I...can't get it up," he mumbled under his breath.

Not loud enough for them to hear. "What?"

"I said I can't get it up!" Riku repeated, louder, before finally removing his hand to show it was doing no good. "Can't...even do that. I can't show you anything new. Because I don't know it."

An awkward pause filled the tent. Sora and Kairi glanced to each other, then back to Riku. Sora scratched the back of his head. "Riku, if you didn't want to do it, you could've just said—"

"But I do want to!" Riku blurted. The next statement took all of his willpower to say. "I'm just...too nervous!"

The following silence may not have been as long or awkward, but it felt even worse to Riku. He had done himself in after all. He'd gotten himself so worked up about performing well that now he couldn't perform at all. And here both Sora and Kairi had been depending on him, expecting him to pleasure them and vice versa, and now he didn't even know what to do.

Sora broke the silence first. "Here, I know what we'll do." He dug through the blankets until locating the flashlight, and switching it off, plunging them into complete darkness. Riku's eyes took a moment to adjust to the lack of light, and even then Sora and Kairi were mostly blue and black silhouettes before him. "I can look for weird spots on you, and Kairi can suck you off when you get hard enough."

"Wait, why that?" Riku asked.

"Well, Kairi's done it to me a few times before, but I've never given head to a guy, so I didn't think you'd want me just trying now when—"

"No, I mean..." Riku swallowed again. "What am I gonna do for you and Kairi?"

"Riku, don't worry about that now! Just relax," Kairi said, and he felt her slip a hand around his penis. It was smoother, less calloused than his own, and a gentle touch he'd never quite felt before. He tensed up for a second before relaxing again, letting out in inaudible sigh.

The tension spiked again as he felt Sora's warm breath on his face, searching once more for a touchdown spot before he finally settled for a kiss on the mouth. Riku didn't respond at first, too stunned, but finally eased enough to put his tongue into play with Sora's. He fumbled through the kiss with tongues all over and their noses crashing together, but it still brought a fast flush to his cheeks. Sora tasted like sweat and that beef and rice they'd had for dinner, but he didn't really mind.

He thought about protesting something once the kiss broke, but didn't really have anything to protest. Maybe how his own hands had suddenly become useless. Kairi gave him long and gentle strokes while Sora continued to nudge around the underside of his face, probing with fingers and tongue into all the little nooks and crannies Riku could never find. He worked his way up his cheek, into and around and behind his ear, almost getting lost in his long silver hair. Then his hands roamed down his spine, stopping to stroke at the small of his back. Riku twitched and gasped at the sensation of just simple touch on a particular patch of skin.

It only got worse, as Kairi leaned in closer to cup his balls with her other hand. Riku instantly understood why Sora had enjoyed it so much: it felt wonderful. His stretch of silent pleasure broke with a long moan.

Riku somehow eased himself from a sitting position into lying on the floor. He wanted to use his hands somehow, touch back for every nice touch he felt, but couldn't quite reach his friends. "I need to do something..."

"Just relax!" Kairi stopped long enough to chide him again. Riku tried, just letting go and feeling Sora and Kairi explore his body. It took some getting used to feeling them move from one place to another, and at first not being able to see them was disorienting. But the darkness helped in that he didn't need to see what was happening, he could just trust they were there and trust they would take care of him. He took in deep breaths, concentrating on timing them with the licks and touches he felt. And it worked: once he calmed himself out of anxiety, the arousal took hold, and he felt himself grow hard between Kairi's fingers. With Sora's tongue still working up and down him, it didn't take long at all before he was fully erect.

His mouth dropped open as he felt Kairi's own close around his erection. It was happening fast, but not too fast, and although he couldn't see much of anything, he could feel the way her tongue slid along the underside and how she sucked carefully on the head. Coupled with Sora now sliding hands along the back of his spread thighs, he couldn't form the proper noises for how good this felt.

"I wish we'd thought of bringing some oil; I could've tried getting fingers inside you," Sora sighed, moving back up from the hips to the face to give the area another thorough search.

"Not complaining about this," Riku gasped, his voice much higher than usual.

Riku couldn't see it, but he felt Sora smile into the side of his neck. "I love it when she does that for me," he whispered. "And it feels really, really good when she does this one thing where—"

He experienced it first hand when Kairi suddenly gave his balls a soft squeeze, all while clamping her lips down and sucking harder than before. It put so much pressure on him he thought he would explode, and he responded with a startled moan and nearly violent thrust of his hips. Kairi backed off enough to cough and regain her breath, then returned to licking him.

Riku wasn't quite sure who or what it was. It was either Sora rubbing at the skin behind his neck, or Kairi sucking in hard, fast takes, or both of them combined with this feeling of unconditional love and acceptance from his two best friends. Either way, the pleasure mounted so fast and so fantastic that he didn't even have time to blurt out a warning. His body quivered and then spasmed as he came into the warm wetness of Kairi's mouth. He fortunately spent himself fast, as Kairi made a face and then bolted, sticking her head out of the tent long enough to spit. She crawled back over to the boys, wiping her mouth. "Sorry...I still can't swallow that stuff without gagging."

Riku hardly cared. He was too busy basking in the afterglow, gasping in long and grateful breaths as if he couldn't get enough of the air they shared. He heard Sora and Kairi plop down on either side of him, warm and content.

"You guys will owe me big time next time we do this," Kairi finally said.

It was then that Riku realized they'd never managed to finish off Kairi, and the euphoria died a little. "Kairi...I'm sorry I was too slow."

"I'm sorry I was too fast!" Sora added.

"Oh, it's okay," she sighed, and the sheets rustled with indication of her stretching. "I'm sorry if I spit it into your shoes."

There was a pause. "You did?" Sora and Riku asked at the same time.

"I don't know; it was dark out, and I didn't really aim..."

Another pause before Riku let himself laugh. It was infectious, and Sora and Kairi's laughter joined his own. So what if he'd been nervous? Just because they were adults and did adult things didn't mean they had to be adult about it. Riku wondered if it was possible for them to even be "real" adults when it was all three of them together.

When the laughter finally subsided, Riku dropped off into a soft haze before finally hitting true sleep.

------

"Rise and shiiiine, kiddies! We got a lotta work to do today!"

Riku blinked awake, finding the first thing to meet his blurry vision was what appeared to be a skinny red lizard. After rubbing the sleep out of his eyes, he realized it was Mushu, holding a bowl of porridge in each hand and balancing one more on his tail. Riku tried to move, but couldn't free himself from the tangle of Sora's legs sprawled over his back and Kairi curled beneath the same blanket as him. She stirred, but didn't wake.

Mushu held up the porridge bowl impatiently. "Come on, I carried this porridge all the way down here 'cause Mulan said to! Sleepover time is done, okay?!"

"Thanks, Mushu," Riku said, scratching at the tangled mess of his hair. "Can you just set it down by the door and Sora and Kairi can eat theirs when they wake up?"

Mushu groaned overdramatically, and set the porridge down by the tent entrance. "Okay, fine. But don't take too long, or it'll get cold!" Once free of the porridge bowls, he approached Riku with a suspicious look. "You told me you were gonna go chill, and instead you throw a party?!"

Riku smiled. "Okay, you got me. I didn't chill. But I do feel much better than before."

"Mmm, alright. But next time, you better listen to my advice! I am a guardian dragon!" Mushu started to saunter out of the tent, but stopped and sniffed. "And my advice to you is to go wash out your shoes. You need to start wearing socks or somethin', 'cause they smell really funky."
OT3, or OT5?

Sora, Kairi, and Riku as the Destiny Trio. OT3.

But...since Roxas is a part of Sora, and Namine is a part of Kairi, post Kingdom Hearts II, would it turn into an OT5? That would depend on how Roxas and Namine fair when they join their Somebodies, and how they get along with Sora, Kairi, Riku, and others.

I've always wondered about this. >_> Has anyone else done the same - written fanfiction, drabbles, drawn fanart, etc about this possibility? Mere speculation would be fine, too.

[fic][post KHII] Fungus Among Us

Title: Fungus Among Us
Author: Kashu Arashi
Word Count: 1630
Disclaimer: None of these characters are even remotely mine. The most I can claim is owning a copy of Nightmare Before Christmas and it's OST.
Notes: The short version was last week's entry on kh_drabble.

“I’m bored!”

Riku ignored the proclamation and the steady thump of bony little feet against the wood of the chair and kept rooting through the cupboards for something resembling food. The closest he’d found was a large bottle of absinthe and for some reason he didn’t think Jack and Sally would be overly thrilled with the baby sitters getting roaring drunk.

Behind him, Sora tried to work the problem. “Well Danny, what do you want to do? We could play with the xylophones some more or play hide and seek -”

“I wanna play outside.” The little skeleton replied in a petulant little voice.

For once his sister, normally the calm voice of reason, decided to agree with him. “Yeah! I wanna play in the snow! Is it almost Christmas? Santa always brings us snow for Christmas!”

“It’s July. Christmas isn’t for another six months,” Riku replied, shifting a large jar of nightshade to see what was behind it. Hen’s teeth. Lovely.

“Well I still wanna go play outside!”

Riku turned to find Danny with his arms crossed firmly over his thin little chest, scowling at Sora, while Catherine was practically dancing, her skirt forming a hypnotist’s pinwheel. He shook his head and looked over to where Kairi was playing with the baby. “There’s nothing to eat, unless you want to try a maggot frittata.”

“They’re surprisingly good, once you get used to them,” Sora offered. “But they really need mushrooms.”

The horrible part was that Riku couldn’t tell whether Sora was being serious or not, so he didn’t know how justified he was in feeling queasy. Torn between laughing it off as a joke and retching, he decided to play it safe and simply replied, “There are no mushrooms.”

Danny bounced off his chair, suddenly excited. “I know where to find mushrooms! We could go mushroom hunting!”

“Yeah! Mom would love some truffles!”

Riku looked at Sora.

Sora looked at Riku.

They both looked at Kairi.

Kairi shrugged. “Sure, why not? You two can take Danny and Catherine out and I’ll stay here and look after Chris. We should be fine.” Given that Chris was cheerfully mashing a pumpkin rind to mush with his little toothless mouth, there was no reason to doubt the statement.

“Alright then!” Sora stood. “Let’s go get some mushrooms!”

“YAY!” In unison the two little skeletons jumped in excitement then went tearing across the floor and down the stairs faster than Riku would have thought possible. “C’mon Zero!”

The ghostly little dog looked up from his bed, woofed sleepily, then floated in a series of bounds out of the bed and after the two children.

The pale-haired boy looked at Sora and arched an eyebrow. “You realize we’re going to be chasing two children around in the dark, yes?”

“Yeah, well,” Sora grinned at him. “Do you want that frittata with mushrooms or maggots?”

“…let’s go.”

***

“What’s it doing?” Catherine cocked her head to the side and watched the little white mushroom spinning around in front of them.

It was Sora who answered, as Riku had never seen a mushroom actually move before. “It wants to play! Here, watch this!” He summoned his Keyblade and leveled it at the little spinning fungus. “Wind!”

From nowhere the wind picked up, lifting the mushroom off of the ground and tossing it head over heels. Or cap over stem. Or whatever. For some reason, Riku got the feeling the mushroom would actually be laughing if it made any sound.

Catherine made up for the silence, giggling her pig-tailed head off. “It’s so cute! I don’t think I could eat it.”

“White mushrooms are icky anyway.” Danny crossed his arms and frowned up at the mushroom. “We need to find truffles.”

Not lowering the mushroom, Sora arched an eyebrow at the little skeleton. “Truffles? Do you know how hard it is to find those things?”

“We can do it, if you’ll just stop playing with those silly white things!”

“I don’t think they’re silly!” Catherine started spinning, just like the mushroom had. “I think they’re cute! Lift me, Sora! Lift me!”

“Eh, I don’t think that would work with you.” Sora smiled, lowering the mushroom gently to the ground. The mushroom landed, then did a couple of little hops and started spinning again. Zero barked at it.

“Oh look! It wants to play some more!” Bony little hands clapped, sending reverberations down the entire length of the girl’s arms. “Do it again, Sora!”

“Alright.”

Riku sighed as Sora sent the little mushroom flying again. Catherine might be enjoying herself, but he was bored. Although at least Danny had stopped his whining, so that was a bonus. He dropped his eyes to see what the other little skeleton was up to –

- then swung his head around in a panicked arc. “Danny? Oh no. Danny! Where are you?”

“Huh?” Sora’s attention jerked away from the mushroom and he accidentally dropped it. It wriggled and hopped about in an unhappy manner, then vanished.

“Awww! It’s gone!”

“So’s Danny.” Riku scowled. When he found that kid, he was going to tattoo the definition of “obedience” into his bony butt. Then again, maybe not. Jack and Sally would object, he was sure, but it was so very, very tempting. “Where on earth would the little monster have gotten off to?”

“He can’t have gotten far. It hasn’t even been five minutes, has it?” Sora frowned. “Although, if he was looking for truffles, I had the best luck finding them by Oogie Boogie’s old place. By the bridge.”

“Even Danny wouldn’t be that dense, would -”

“EEEEEEIIIIIIIIIIIIAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Both boys jumped in unison, instinctively summoning their Keyblades. The scream had come from the hill in the middle of the graveyard.

With a somewhat relieved look, Sora started running toward the sound. “See, I told you he couldn’t have gone far!”

Riku took off after him. “Oh, no, just far enough to get himself eaten by something.”

“Sora! Riku! Wait!” Cathrine was running along behind them as fast as she could, but her little legs couldn’t move fast enough to catch up.

“I’ll stay with Catherine, you go get Danny.” Without waiting for a response, Sora stopped.

“I- wha – why me?”

“’Cause you, uh, do better with dark things.” Sora called back. He sounded apologetic, but Riku still glowered and mentally promised him death by tickle torture when this was over with. Or maybe death by noogie. That would work too.

He was almost to the hill, Zero tearing ahead of him barking wildly, when Danny came tearing around it from the other side, still screaming. There was something chasing him, but Riku couldn’t quite see what.

“HELP! HELP! IT SPIT STUFF AT ME AND NOW IT’S CHASING ME AND MAKE IT STOP RIIIIIIIIKUUUUUUUU!”

As Danny reached him, he reached out and grabbed the little skeleton by the shoulder, thrusting himself between him and –

- a little black mushroom.

“That’s it? You’re running from a -”

The mushroom hunched down, then spat a ring of purple, foul smelling spores into the air. They coated the inside of Riku’s nose and mouth, making the world spin alarmingly.

So maybe the mushroom was a bit dangerous after all. Giving his head a quick shake, he lashed out with Way to the Dawn, only to have it glance off the mushroom’s cap without so much as a scratch.

“What the - ?” Riku blinked, backing away from the fungus, holding his arm up to his face in case it spat poison again. He couldn’t tell if it was just an after-effect of the spores, but the mushroom seemed to have turned grey. It was slowly fading back to black.

Danny continued to cower behind him with a fiercely growling Zero. “Bad truffle! Bad, bad truffle!”

Riku wanted to tell the skeleton boy to run to Sora. As it was, between boy and dog, he was in danger of tripping if he backed up too fast, but the mushroom was in front of him, so if he was careful with his attacks and if he could actually land a blow, he should be able to deal with the situation fairly quickly.

He lunged again and the mushroom wriggled out of the way. He spun, bringing the blade around in an arching slash, which he reversed into a thrust. This time the mushroom didn’t manage to dodge. The blade went right through it. Riku twisted it, bringing it up through the cap.

The mushroom fell, split nearly in two. To be on the safe side, Riku brought the flat of his blade down on it, mashing the remains into a smear of goo.

Behind him, Danny sat sniffling with Zero licking at his bony little cheeks. “I don’t like mushrooms! I wanna go home!”

“It’s okay, Danny.” Sora walked up and patted the little skeleton on the head. Catherine trailed behind him, keeping plenty of distance between herself and the ex-mushroom. “You’re safe now.”

“No thanks to you!” Riku scowled and put the Keyblade away. “I could’ve used some help, you know.”

“Oh come on, Riku!” Sora laughed. “It was just a fungus. I’ve taken on lots of the things, I knew you could do it.”

“I still wanna go home!”

“I wanna go home too.” Catherine looked up at them both with big, pleading eye sockets. “I’m getting hungry.”

“Okay, we’ll go home. But now we’re stuck with plain old maggot frittatas.” Sora bent over and scooped up some of the mysterious looking mushroom goo. “Maybe if we add this it’ll be tasty?”

This time Riku could tell Sora wasn’t joking. He stared at his friend for a second, then shuddered and started herding the children out of the graveyard. “We are never babysitting on this world again.”

It occurred to me I never posted this anywhere but kh_drabble (and possibly my own writing journal? The novelty!

Title: He Was Smiling
Word Count: 470
Spoilers: Set post-KHII, so I suppose they are implied.
Notes: As I said in kh_drabble: rated PG13 for possible trauma. :snicker: It's a bit depressing, yeah. It nearly tore my heart out to write, but the idea just wouldn't leave me alone. Thank you to the superbeta'ing crimsoncookie.

Somehow Riku knew that for him, it would end in darkness.

Despite Sora's or Kairi's protestations, he knew—-and kept that knowledge safe within him even as he felt the shadows drawing near.

He sat on the paopu tree and watched the ocean as he'd never been able to see it before. He sparred with Sora, laughed at his jokes. He swam with Kairi and carried her piggyback home from the island, warm and wet and sleepy. At night, he held them close as if to wrap them in his chest (with a breath's worth of space, just above his heart). Once, Kairi woke with a bewildered smile, claiming a butterfly had kissed her that night.

He made sand castles.

When the coughing fits began, he hid them in his hand, or in his shirtsleeve. Sometimes he'd excuse himself for a walk on the island; the others knew him well enough to leave him be. He'd crumble in on himself then and let it out, burying the resulting bile—-oozing, dripping black—-in the sand.

He never let them find the holes.

He continued to come to the island until the last day. That afternoon, while racing Sora barefoot through the surf, the shadows fell and he collapsed face first into the waves, gasping for breath until his vision slipped away.

He woke in the evening to a foreign bed and two pairs of wide blue eyes on him. "They said that there's a shadow on your heart." Kairi's tiny fingers clutched unsteadily at Sora's wrist as he spoke, voice brimming. "Why didn't you tell us?"

Calmly, he replied. "It was inevitable."

"Riku, that's...that's so stupid! We can fight this together, you and me and Kairi! We can fix it, Riku! We can-—"

"Sora."

His friend stumbled on his silenced tongue, looking to be on the verge of tears. Kairi's grip tightened on his wrist.

"Don't be afraid."

"Me!? What about you!?"

Riku simply closed his eyes. "I'm ready."

To that end, there was no argument.

That night, they encircled him, held him close as if to wrap him in their hearts. Arms bled into arms and chests rose against each other, sharing the air between. Someone shook; the others echoed and moved to compensate. Fingers pressed against arms, hands against heads, lips against tears. In the dark, a voice barely whispered: "I want to hear the waves." They shifted, and breathed soft in his ears.

--

It was Kairi who felt his heartbeat go.

She pressed her hand to his chest and tried to fill up the void with her pulse—-one two, one two, never echoed back. She folded her face into his shoulder and cried.

--

Sora woke suddenly when the dawn touched his eyes. Breathless and aching, he looked up at Riku.

He was smiling.

Hey guys! *waves "First Post In This Community" flag* I bring fic.

Title: The Pact
Rating: PG makes me look weak but there's no denying it!
Word Count: 2,175
Pairings: I totally ship RiSoKai, but if you don't and you read this, you probably wouldn't suspect anything romantic. That is to say, the fic implies relationships, but there is no hardcore sexors.
Summary: Living life after the journey is often the hardest part; real life dulls in comparison to adventure. Sora, Riku, and Kairi have changed drastically since their journey started, but how do they plan to cope with it ending? With a new promise, of course. Oneshot. Post-KH2, so beware of spoilers.

The Pact

Sora was on top of the game today, and with any luck he would bring them both up to par; no day was allowed to slip through their fingers free of sweat and a bruise or two. It was a part of their pact.

Riku remembered it clearly. So clearly, in fact, he fancied it blocked out all the bad memories that were so heavy and grey they were out of place in the brain of a boy in his bright yellow bedroom, trying to live a normal life.

The pact was something made between the two of them, the boys, but Kairi quickly joined in, to their relief. It was still up in the air whether or not Kairi wanted to keep their journey fresh or have a new, complete life with her men.

It was a mixture of both.

When Sora first mentioned it, it took Riku aback, but
