I also like this:

It's the hands. And the wheel. I think the wheel definitely adds a certain whimsical quality.

As I find it inexplicably amusing.

what makes good fridge magnets????

I bought a whole shitload of this cool thick magnetic sheet stuff that you can print on and then cut out, and I have some of that Diamond Glaze that seals artwork like glass and turns it super hard, so in theory I could make my own fridge magnets of ANYTHING!!!!

...

But what would make good fridge magnets?

...

I'm drawing a blank here.

...

LOLCATS?

...

This?

Some things i recommend today:

I've been listening to radiodarvish.com while I work today, and it is making me very pleased. Go give it a listen.

If that's too relaxing, then may I recommend that you go and listen to the Cat Empire? My goodness, I love this band, and wish to acquire everything they have ever made. You will too, if you don't already know about them (I'm probably the last person to have heard these guys -- o.k., in my defense, I heard them a while back and kept thinknig I need to hear more and finally got around to it). My exploration reveals that these guys don't seem to put out anything even vaguely unimpressive, and they're honestly odd. If you don't know them, the video for "Sly" is
here
.

You can even alternate the Cat Empire with Radio Darvish for a really special experience. Seems to work for me.

also, go do some yoga and then eat something with coconut, preferably fresh but any coconut-containing product will do.

Those are today's recommendations from me.

I have to go right now; hope everyone's weekend is going well.

It's really strange when something is bad on purpose

Check out this Devendra Banhart "Bollywood"-type video of his song Carmensita, featuring his girlfriend Natalie Portman. I love Banhart, and the song is great, but parody of a cheesy genre walks a fine line and sometimes it just fails.

PSA: Shopping

There has one thing I have always enjoyed, and that is shoe shopping. My mother tells stories about how I would hide the shoes of visitors if I liked their shoes, and visits to shoe stores to calm me down. She would also tell stories and show pictures of me wearing my dad's cowboy boots and a diaper. (If I get brave I may scan it for you all.) She would also tell you that my favorite shoe is the Mary Jane (it really is).

I remember getting a new pair of shoes and the world seemed different, all my old clothes seemed new because the shoes make the outfit and add a new pair of shoes, it's a new look. The highlight of back to school shopping is the shoes and the school supplies. I love starting a new year in new things. It gives me a little boost in a potentially overwhelming situation. You know what I mean? New class, different mix of kids, and a new teacher you don't know.

Since 2002 my church has adopted an inner city school close to downtown OKC. We provide a new outfit from head to toe, a backpack filled with school supplies that the school says they need, and we just show them that they are loved. In the winter we provide them with a new coat, hat, gloves, and a Christmas present. They also get a picture with Santa, cake, and punch.

This year we have adopted two schools. The school downtown and the school by my church. That is a total of about 800 kids. I am excited about what we get to do for these kids. I have worked at the school by that church. I know how those kids are hurting and needing to see that people care for them and will provide for them because sometimes mom cannot and dad usually is not there.

Today I bought five pairs of shoes, and later I am going to buy five more. Why? Because I love shoes and I what it is like to know that mom and dad don't have the money for new shoes. I know what it is like to wonder if we can afford what we need for school and if we get everything for school what will we be giving up to get the stuff. I want these kids to not have to worry like I did. I want them to know that they are loved. Plus I love shoe shopping even if it is not for me.

So if you can give. The economy is tight, and I hear we are in a recession but my finances are ordered by the Lord, I have increase, and I choose to use that increase on others.

So we were supposed to go to the aquarium today for [info]oh_faerie_nuff's birthday. Unfortunately, Paul's left leg has been taken over by a pretty bad cellulitis infection which has rendered him largely immobile. He's on antibiotics and doctor's orders to stay off the leg and keep an eye on it, which means we're largely housebound for the weekend.

Luckily the Geek Gods seem to have conspired to make this easy. G4TV started this morning with a Lost special, which was followed up by a Heroes season 2 marathon. I'll probably toss in my The X Files: Fight the Future DVD later to remember the good old days when Dana Scully had a sense of humor.

Basically, I'm at home and having a geek out. I'll probably hit up Target later just to get out of the house since Paul's finally able to sleep thanks to his painkillers. The infection is spreading though, so if it gets much worse we're going to have to consider a trip to the ER.

One thing I will say: re-watching Heroes season 2 only makes me hate that stupid flying boyfriend of Claire's even more. What an annoying douchebag. I hope he doesn't show up in season 3.

Airing

I've gone back and forth (and back, and forth, and back, and forth, and back...) regarding whether or not I wanted to post about the Laura wank. I commented in the initial, now-infamous [info]fanthropology post but backed off once the inevitable wank started building up. Other than that I've kept my big nose out of this, save for comments in two posts: [info]lennoxmacbeth's FANDOM CAN GO TO HELL and [info]ciderpress's I've got the thingie. Half in English. Half in squibbly.

There are a number of reasons for this, the big one being that Laura is my friend, but I very much disagreed with her actions in this case, and as her friend I didn't want to add to the dogpile. Laura knew about both comments I made, I e-mailed her with a link to the initial lennoxmacbeth comment, and mentioned that I'd commented in ciderpress and what I'd said. She also knew, before the wankstorm started a'brewin', that I disagreed with her actions and expected there to be consequences in the form of major social backlash.

I'm posting now because I've been defriended by Laura. The fault is some hers, some mine, and the backstory is kind of involved and I'll get to that in a minute, but the long and short of it is the stuff she defriended me over is the kind of stuff I wouldn't want to be friends with anyone who couldn't tolerate anyway. It's a shame, and I'm sad - the one thing I haven't wanted since this started was to lose a friend - but at the moment, I'm pretty sure the Laura I thought I was friends with doesn't actually exist, in which case me speaking up wasn't the problem...just the catalyst.

So. Backstory. )

But anyway. Where it stands today: For voicing my disapproval of her behavior and her lying by omission to me (a lie by omission I discovered very publicly, I was defriended. For attempting to un-out somebody who had already been un-outed once, I was de-adminned.

I did, for a time, believe with almost childlike faith in the FanHistory wiki. And when I started to learn about the wank surrounding it, about the bad rumors and the negatives, I thought it could be saved. I thought a little better PR, more admins like [info]slwatson, less admins like me - only there by virtue of my friendship with Laura - find some people willing to go through and proofread and clean up, ignore the worst of the wankers, it could be good. I believed, honestly, it would have been the best thing for both OTW and FH for them to work together.

A few weeks ago, I started to realize FanHistory will never go anywhere with Laura at the helm. She's too wanky, and while I don't believe she deserves everything she gets, something like that needs credibility in fandom. Which is a shame, but that's the way the cookie crumbles.

So there's my dirty laundry. What a week for Sims to be broken.

Newsarama wins Eisner

Newsarama Logo

Last night, Newsarama.com Senior Editor Matt Brady accepted the Eisner Award for "Best Comics-Related Periodical/Journalism". As a writer for the site since 2003 and as a man with an enormous ego, I'd like to think that my work there helped make this happen. Congrats to Matt, Mike, Vaneta, Ben, Steve and everyone else I'm ignorantly forgetting.
