You know what sucks? #2
It sucks to have something creative and fun taken away from you because you are the only person capable of efficiently finishing a boring, labor-intensive project that will be late if you don't work on it instead.

Thanks so much people for being so slow about things, thanks so much!

I was going to work on a catalog, but we're going to have to send that out of house because I have to do some tedious grunt work that's late to production. Shows you what you get for being good at your job.

Oh do I ever understand that.

It seems to be a daily occurrence for me to hear, "Well no other designer can work on this project because no one else can work with this client."

Are you kidding me? So because people have bad attitudes I get all the crappy jobs and the crappy clients? What have we learned here boys and girls? I think I need to adjust my customer service strategy.

Yeah, makes me think that being a snail's-pace slacker might be a good idea. Around here, they get the most creative work and I get stuck with the stuff that's 100 pages long and was due yesterday.

Check.

I just got chastized in an email by a client about being angry, (It's a bit out of your
charcter, don't you think..."
) essentially for having the spine to pitch about not being paid and taking an unfair settlement offer. [ See my thread eleswhere ]

Sheesh.

i have consistently found that my reward for doing my work well has been to get the shittiest projects with the nightmare schedules and rude clients. makes me wonder why i bothered!

You and I may just be twins! I am constantly forced to hump out last minute crap jobs (because I know the job and can do them quickly without errors) while my new coworker sighs and sips her Pepsi while sloooowly creating interesting and creative projects. It drives me mad!

One of the sad truths of this biz.. the people who can get it done get the impossible nightmare assignments. And other interesting work is handed out to the less capable, becuase you're "busy" with that nightmare rush job.

What grinds my gears is that there is a perception among many bosses that art people who have strong production skills are not "creative" types. And that the more "visionary" and creative sorts need to have their prepress handed off to someone more grounded and methodical.

I once received a "horizontal demotion" at a publishing company as a SENIOR Art Director by having a "Creative" Director placed over me to design a luxury travel trade magazine. The Owner wanted a more "womany" and "fashion" look. But this much younger woman, while an able designer had pretty sketchy production skills. So guess who became instant "Prepress Production Monkey" ... and which of us got laid off a month after 9/11?

Labor Proverb

Strawboss: "What does the fastest worker get"

Foreman: "More work."

Banzai...
