WHY RULES? AREN'T WE ALL ADULTS HERE? True, we are likely all adults here. However, rules are not always evil, nor do they strip one of one's autonomy by default. Reaching the age of 18 does not miraculously guarantee that one has appropriate social skills or some kind of inherent ability to conduct themselves effectively and/or politely. Basic rules and guidelines can be insightful, and help increase the general comfort level in the community. Don't worry - this ain't gonna be like A Handmaid's Tale or 1984.

OBJECTIVE COMMUNITY RULES:

[info]denver_goths is an inclusive community, and anyone interested in the goth culture is welcome here. Members do not have to reside in Denver to join. Everyone is welcome - local, statewide, nationwide, or international!

Any postings of forwarded jokes/annoying 'cute' things, virus hoaxes/'warings', chain letters, etc...will not only result in you being sent to either Barad-Dur or Guantanamo Bay, it will also result in you being banned from posting to the community.

Vendetta posts are lame ... No, really. They are. "He/She looked at me funny, now I'm going to try to embarrass him/her!" STFU please, and move on. [info]denver_goths will not tolerate regular visits from the WAAAAHmbulance.

Never quote or repost locked/private Livejournal entries sans permission of the original poster, or repost private e-mail/correspondence (this includes instant messenger transcripts) to [info]denver_goths. This is a bannable offense.

The BACK button of your internet browser is your friend. For those not in the know, you may use the BACK button to stop reading something that doesn't interest you. As well, allow [info]denvergothmod to bring to your attention the SCROLL function available in your internet browser. To clarify, you may use this function to avoid posts that do not interest you by simply scrolling past them. 'Nuff said.

Never make racist or bigoted remarks, even under the guise of humor.

Never proselytize. Don't take a cybercrap on anyone's religion or lackthereof.

No personal attacking or flaming. [info]denvergothmod understands that discussion can get heated, and that is okay. However, name-calling and slandering another person will not be tolerated.

PROMOTIONAL EVENTS/ PHOTOS GUIDELINES:

Members are encouraged to promote their clubs, gigs, or events. All promos must go under the LJ-CUT tag to allow for easier and more aesthetic navigation of the community. In the subject line of your promo post, give a basic synopsis of the information contained in your post. For example, Club Stompy McStompyboots Friday, July 29, 2005: NIETZER EBB NIGHT! No cover! Etc. Then place the entirety of your promo under the LJ-CUT tag (see next).

Members are more than welcome to post pictures from their events -- please use the LJ-CUT tag.

USING THE LJ-CUT TAG:

The LJ-CUT tag is your friend. Please use the LJ-Cut when promoting your club, gig, or event. You may certainly use graphics and post pictures from your event -- we absolutely want to see what our community is up to! To use the LJ-Cut tag, please read the following:

SUBJECTIVE RULES and SUGGESTED NETIQUETTE/POSTING GUIDELINES:

Crediting quotes or funnies by linking to the source where you found 'em is appreciated.

Yes, [info]denvergothmod is pro-gay and anti-Bush. Cope.

Humorless whining about stuff/people you don't like is boring. Don't.

Breaking these rules will result in A) merciless mockery, or B) merciless mockery possibly in prose constructed entirely from The Cure or Sisters of Mercy lyrics. PH34R THIS.

No one is entitled or given license to harass a fellow [info]denver_goths member via LJ comments, any chat medium, another messageboard, etc... [info]denvergothmod does not condone harassment or flaming of fellow community members, no matter how badly you wish to beat said person to death with their Docs and package them up neatly within a roll of PVC for efficient disposal by Waste Management.

IP addresses can be logged, so don't think you can get away with being a anon-a-dick. Also? [info]denvergothmod has a sweet, sweet inside track with [info]lj_abuse, so just be aware of this fact.

POSTING ETIQUETTE/GUIDELINES

Off Topic (OT) posts are okay in moderation, but remember not everyone is going to be fascinated by your in-jokes with, say, two other people, your personal life, or the reposting of a cryptic conversation between you and a friend.

If your post includes an inline image for some reason, and it's not your image or hosted on your own server, webspace, or photobucket (or like account), just directly link to the page featuring the image you want to share. If you're going to use it inline, upload it to your own space on the web. Don't steal anyone else's bandwidth. Bandwidth stealing & remote linking to images not on your own server is evil. Please see prior references to the PVC coffin o'doom or Guantanamo Bay.

If you want to post, you have to join the community. Anonymous or non-member postings aren't allowed, due to the high level of extremely irritating trolls who post what they think are witty one liners or stupid OMG U SUXXORS posts. Sockpuppets are not encouraged -- please re-refer to the above comment regarding [info]lj_abuse.

Anything you say on this community is open to discussion. If you put it out there, be prepared for dialogue in return. [info]denvergothmod will not delete any comments or censor any opinions. Comments eligible for deletion include direct flames or insults, or derogatory comments, to fellow community members.

Please use good judgment when posting and commenting. There are no stupid topics or questions, just stupid ways of asking or presenting them. This applies to stating opinions as well. Please remember the internet is an imperfect medium for communication. Extend the benefit of the doubt to your fellow [info]denver_goths members by default when something rubs you the wrong way - oftentimes comments which come across to a reader as insulting are due to unfortunate or poor wording. Ask for clarification; don't assume. Additionally, there is always going to be someone offended by something, even if the intention is benign. If someone offends you but is not breaking the rules, please explain in your comment(s) why you're offended, but please refrain from personal attacks.

Posts containing promotion for other gothic communities are welcomed and encouraged, and cross-posting is certainly allowed.

Please do not post to [info]denver_goths to link to other communities' drama asking for [info]denver_goths members' "help" in debates. If someone starts a flamewar elsewhere, it makes us look bad and encourages trolls to visit our community if we suddenly surge into the middle of the argument. Fight your own battles.

A Final Word from Your Moderator:

[info]denvergothmod is not here to hold your hand or mother you as you traverse the community. If you make an offensive statement or cop a shitty attitude, you open the door to others to offend you in return. What [info]denvergothmod asks is that people be respectful of each other, especially in disagreement. The rules are somewhat open to interpretation and [info]denvergothmod does not want to play thought-police 24/7. But if you step way over the line, [info]denvergothmod will take appropriate action. For more suggestions on posting and commenting etiquette, please read this. If someone breaks the rules outright, please do not criticize the offending member publically, as it just adds fuel to the flamewar. Instead, if you wish to lodge a complaint, please e-mail [info]denvergothmod at denvergothmod [at] gmail [dot] com. Please provide a direct link to the offending comment or post for [info]denvergothmod's consideration.
