My name is Jennifer Goodland. I am a writer for the University of Colorado Denver Advocate, a student newspaper on the Auraria campus in Denver, Colorado, USA. I am looking for students or alumni at UC Denver who are willing to be interviewed about why they write/read fanfiction and some of the free speech issues involved in writing and reading fanfiction. My goal is to explain fanfic as a legitimate form of expression in a way outsiders will understand, a la this entry. If you are not comfortable using your real name, your fannish alias is acceptable - I need to know your real name as a source, but as long as I know you are a UCD student or alumnus I don't need to use it in the article. I am not excluding other fandoms, but given the recent RDR lawsuit and Strikethrough incident, Harry Potter fanfic authors are a plus. (Please do respond even if you aren't in that fandom, though.) People can respond to Jennifer.Goodland@ucdadvocate.com by October 12th.

What I need to know:

1. What is your fandom alias, and what is your campus affiliation?

2. What is your real name? Do I have permission to use your real name in the article?

3. What fandoms do you generally write in?

4. Aside from fanfic, what other fandom activities do you participate in?

5. How has writing fanfic affected your life, both positively and negatively?

6. What is your motivation - do you ever expect or desire a reaction from the authors, cast, directors of your favorite shows, books, or movies?

7. Do you ever seek profit for fannish activities? Do you think seeking profit is acceptable, and under what circumstances?

8. Please give a short summary of your understanding of fanfic's legal status.

9. Do you think J. K. Rowling's legal action against Steve Vander Ark's "Lexicon" was appropriate or inappropriate, and why?

10. Were you an active writer during LJ's Strikethrough incident? If you were, what were your thoughts?

It seems like a lot of questions, but I'm looking for less of a detailed essay and more for short quotes.

Also, if anyone at Auraria is willing to weigh in on library masturbation (for? against? Were you aware? Ew? Cruisy bathrooms and sleazy spots?) I'm up for interviewing UC Denver students/staff/alumni on that subject as well.

Does anyone have any personal experience or advice for renters who's residence is being foreclosed? The home is handled through a realty agency who had no idea the home was in foreclosure. We've received letters, calls & knocks at our door this week, including one letter from the county clerk & recorder. Auction is also scheduled for late January. So we're pretty sure this is for real.

Thanks.

Pet sitters and moving help recs?

I posted this summer about moving to Denver in August...well, that got kinda FUBARed, but now we are for seriously serious moving in December. Does anyone have any good recommendations on reliable and reasonably priced movers? We've got the loading of the truck and transportation to Denver covered -- we really just need help unloading the truck, to save my husband's and his uncle's backs. I know this question has been posted before, but I couldn't find it scouring the archives (Mods: Are there memories/tags for this group that I was just missing?)

Also, we'll be back on the East Coast for the holidays, which means my cat will be by herself in our new apartment, so we'll need to hire a pet sitter. My husband found Watchdog Pets, but I was wondering if anyone had experience with them or any other good recommendations for pet sitters? (I looked back over the last couple months in the archive, but didn't find if this had been posted before.)

Thanks so much!! :)

minimum wage?

So I did a bit of research but am still a bit confused. I'm moving to Denver at the end of the year from San Francisco and am trying to figure out how much I can afford to pay in rent in regards to how much I'll make. The most recent article I found said that minimum wage in Colorado is currently $7.25 per hour but is supposed to increase again on January 1st. Also, the minimum wage for servers is only $3.83???

In SF we have our own minimum wage which is a few cents shy of $10.00 per hour and servers get the same minimum wage. Elsewhere in California it's about $8.00 and the servers get the same. Obviously I get that the cost of living is way different but why do the servers get paid so little?? I've been a server in SF for 5 years and make more money part time than my full time office job friends make.

Is it worth it to get a serving job in Denver with the wage being so low? Or should I just find a full time job doing something else?

Happy birthday to me!

I am looking for a venue to celebrate my quarter life crisis. The kind of party I have in mind is as follows:

-->Conversation as a central point (which means minimally intrusive music).
-->A place that encourages mingling among people that might not know one another very well. (Rather than having a long bar somewhere with more bistro-seating)
-->Somewhere that doesn't have a "rental fee" (I want to bring my own cake and don't want it to feel like a wedding reception).
-->Somewhere without a cover charge.
-->Somewhere with food as good as the drinks.
-->Casual, comfortable, stylish.

Any suggestions? Thanks!
