Hello everyone!

I unexpectedly have an extra ticket for the Dar Williams concert tomorrow night at the Boulder Theater. A FRONT ROW ticket. That I'm willing to sell at FACE VALUE for $36. And hell, if you live in Denver, I'd even be willing to carpool if you'd like! Concert starts at 8p. Leave me a comment with contact information if you're interested.

Ticket SOLD!

Double turns? [Oct. 13th, 2008|04:39 pm]

cliched
So, since moving to Denver I have noticed a lot of signs that say "NO DOUBLE TURNS." I was utterly confused at first and afraid I was breaking the law by turning left and then left again at the next block. But! I think I've got it. Does it mean only the outside lane can turn? That is, if I am in the far right hand lane, I can turn right, but the person in the lane to my left cannot?

I tried googling, but "double turns" is so broad it brings up a bunch of stuff about dancing and other things unrelated.

Thanks!

ETA: Excellent! Looks like I figured it out. Thank you!

cute cafes and coffee shops [Oct. 12th, 2008|11:13 am]

hi everyone!

I recently moved to denver near aurora (evans and quebec) and I am looking for a small place with some charm where I can go grab a chai tea latte and study.  I have been to Stella's on Pearl st., which I love, but I am looking for something a little closer. Any suggestions? Or anything so great to would warrant the drive? Thanks for you input!

Your input needed! (posted for the wife) [Oct. 11th, 2008|01:24 am]

My name is Jennifer Goodland. I am a writer for the University of Colorado Denver Advocate, a student newspaper on the Auraria campus in Denver, Colorado, USA. I am looking for students or alumni at UC Denver who are willing to be interviewed about why they write/read fanfiction and some of the free speech issues involved in writing and reading fanfiction. My goal is to explain fanfic as a legitimate form of expression in a way outsiders will understand, a la this entry. If you are not comfortable using your real name, your fannish alias is acceptable - I need to know your real name as a source, but as long as I know you are a UCD student or alumnus I don't need to use it in the article. I am not excluding other fandoms, but given the recent RDR lawsuit and Strikethrough incident, Harry Potter fanfic authors are a plus. (Please do respond even if you aren't in that fandom, though.) People can respond to Jennifer.Goodland@ucdadvocate.com by October 12th.

Questions behind the cut. )

It seems like a lot of questions, but I'm looking for less of a detailed essay and more for short quotes.

Also, if anyone at Auraria is willing to weigh in on library masturbation (for? against? Were you aware? Ew? Cruisy bathrooms and sleazy spots?) I'm up for interviewing UC Denver students/staff/alumni on that subject as well.

Renters vs. Foreclosure [Oct. 9th, 2008|01:27 pm]

greener_grasses
Does anyone have any personal experience or advice for renters who's residence is being foreclosed? The home is handled through a realty agency who had no idea the home was in foreclosure. We've received letters, calls & knocks at our door this week, including one letter from the county clerk & recorder. Auction is also scheduled for late January. So we're pretty sure this is for real.

Thanks.

Does anyone know what in particular the hispanic ladies at the west side of the 16th street mall the end of Larimer (on the side of The Market and gelato place) are protesting/striking against?

They stand behind a huge banner I always forget to absorb for later googling.

Zombie Crawl Time! [Oct. 8th, 2008|11:12 am]

cobaltamber
http://www.eyeheartbrains.com/

Saturday October, 18th 6pm

Here is the copy to tell you more about this event.

We will beginning at the Denver Pavilions at the corner of 16th and Glenarm at 5pm. Those needing blood, makeup, blood, torn clothes, blood... ect can prep before the event. The walk begins at 6 (heading west on 16th to Market st). Come as a zombie or prepared to become a zombie. If you want makeup artists to "attack" you and make you a zombie put an X on your chest and run around screaming "Oh my god!! They are attacking me!!"

*NOTE: This is not a pub crawl. There is no drinking during the crawl, only slow moving zombies in search of brains.

As in previous years, we will end the crawl by eating brains (pizza) at Two Fisted Mario's and brain juice (drinks) at Double Daughters.

Pet sitters and moving help recs? [Oct. 8th, 2008|12:39 pm]

[mood | awake]

I posted this summer about moving to Denver in August...well, that got kinda FUBARed, but now we are for seriously serious moving in December. Does anyone have any good recommendations on reliable and reasonably priced movers? We've got the loading of the truck and transportation to Denver covered -- we really just need help unloading the truck, to save my husband's and his uncle's backs. I know this question has been posted before, but I couldn't find it scouring the archives (Mods: Are there memories/tags for this group that I was just missing?)

Also, we'll be back on the East Coast for the holidays, which means my cat will be by herself in our new apartment, so we'll need to hire a pet sitter. My husband found Watchdog Pets, but I was wondering if anyone had experience with them or any other good recommendations for pet sitters? (I looked back over the last couple months in the archive, but didn't find if this had been posted before.)

Thanks so much!! :)

minimum wage? [Oct. 5th, 2008|11:30 pm]

_bang_bang_
[mood | confused]

So I did a bit of research but am still a bit confused. I'm moving to Denver at the end of the year from San Francisco and am trying to figure out how much I can afford to pay in rent in regards to how much I'll make. The most recent article I found said that minimum wage in Colorado is currently $7.25 per hour but is supposed to increase again on January 1st. Also, the minimum wage for servers is only $3.83???

In SF we have our own minimum wage which is a few cents shy of $10.00 per hour and servers get the same minimum wage. Elsewhere in California it's about $8.00 and the servers get the same. Obviously I get that the cost of living is way different but why do the servers get paid so little?? I've been a server in SF for 5 years and make more money part time than my full time office job friends make.

Is it worth it to get a serving job in Denver with the wage being so low? Or should I just find a full time job doing something else?

Are you registered to vote? [Oct. 5th, 2008|06:58 pm]

sixtyforty
Please take a moment to check your voter registration status here (click "Verify Your Voter Registration Information").

Even if you have sent in your registration, you might not be registered because of some perceived or actual error. A list of voters who have submitted registration forms but were reject for whatever reason can be found at Project Vote 2008. You might find a neighbor, friend, or relative on that list.

The deadline to register to vote in November's Presidential election is Monday, October 6. If you're not registered, do it now! You can print up a registration form at the first link above and then take it to an elections office, campaign office, DMV, voter registration drive, or possibly some other places....check to see what's near you.

Computer recycling [Oct. 4th, 2008|09:32 am]

capheine
I have a bunch of old computer stuff (towers, keyboards, etc) that I would like to recycle. Anyone know of any good recycling places on the south part of town? Anything relatively close to Dry Creek & University would be great.

Thanks! :D
