German Vocab Games

- This is my little vocab game. It is just a beta version, and I haven't announced it in any other community or maillist yet. I hope some of you will have time to play around a little bit and give me some feedback about it: mistakes/typos, speed, features you'd like to see, etc. I would like to give personal thanks to [info]timwi and [info]n_true for helpful suggestions! articles game, #4: "der angestellte" (male employee) exists in german and "die angestellte" (female employee) as well. so i wouldn't use that word for the game...

Good point. I think I have a couple more such as Verwandte, Taube, etc.. I will have to exclude them from the list for the articles game.

Btw, the number (#4) does not tell me anything because it is randomly shuffled every time (from a table w/ about 2000 nouns).

i've just noticed the randomization when i tried the advanced vocab game for a second time ;)
typo: it should be "wage agreement" instead of "wage areement" there...

I noticed in the "der-die-das" game, that you translated "vicinity" with "Umgegend" - the correct word is though "Umgebung".
"Umgegend" doesn't exist, tough I find it personally quite fun. :)

Oh, and another error: in the same game you gave "das Zaun" as correct answer, but a fence is male in german - "der Zaun".

Also "the secret" is not "die Geheim" but "das Geheimnis"

I can honestly say I never heared the word in my life, and my dictionary isn't carrying it either...maybe it's a slang term...

I've never heard Umgegend used, but the Germans use Gegend to refer to "that part of town". I heard it last used as, "I won't leave my car unlocked in your Gegend!" (I was talking about Kreuzberg I think).

It is in my German dictionary (as well as the three online ones I use) and it also has an example: die Umgegend von London - the area around London. I am pretty sure it isn't slang, that is usually marked. Perhaps it just isn't used often.

I used my dictionary by some BZ-Verlag, that's were I not found it.
I have by now dug for my good old Duden and found it, and it's in there marked with ugs, what's the short form of "Umgangssprache" what you could translate with "slang".
Guess that's why the first book was lacking it...ohwell, impoatant is, I learned a new word in my mother tongue!
That doesn't happen very often. :)

Yup, "Umgangssprache" is translated as "slang". If you are writing something more formal you could also say "colloquial language". Funny that my dictionary didn't mark it that way, usually it does. Sometimes we learn new words in our native language when we talk to people who are learning our language, because they look things up, and then have to choose one of several words. And sometimes it is an interesting choice ;D

Umgegend - question / collection of neologisms

Hello.

Well I've just googled somehow in this thread where I found the word creation "Umgegend". Great!
It is right, this word does not (yet) exist in the German language.
However, as I'm collecting words that don't yet exist (Worterfindungen, neologisms) on my home page I'd like to add it to my list of new words.

If the author of the word agrees please send a short mail with "Umgegend" and the name/ pseudonym of the author to halli-hallo@ideesamkeit.de
(please put "umgegend" in the subject line so that I see I don't recieve a spam mail)

Hey, it's funny. I've googled for "Umgegend". Thou the word does not exist in German language, it exist about 18,500 times in German web sites ;-) ...

Very cool. I'm not advanced enough to do very well or offer any real corrections, but it is a good exercise and testing ground for someone like me who isn't receiving a formal education in German. (well, sort of formal. My girlfriend is aus der Schweiz, so she does insist on being very efficient! Jawhol, meine Frau!)

Hey, I just played the der-die-das game. It's really a great idea. I've encountered another ambivalent word : der/das gummi. Both is used.

And I don't know if that was already discussed in denglish, a few groups of nouns have suffixes that indicate their gender. For instance -ung and -*eit are AFAIK always feminine.

Oh, and Umgegend is also new to me...

-schaft is also female. I've been using these spiffy tricks to get by :) That and speaking in plurals and you wont have as many problems with not knowing articles!

im trying to do this listening and its about a cafe and people ordering food. they girl orders her drink then asks her friend what she wants. she replies 'sechtung' or 'zechtung' either way im not sure and i cant find it i my dictionary!!!!!! its a drink she is ordering(i think) so if you could help me with this:)
