My system worked... for a while

  • Jun. 11th, 2009 at 10:15 AM
My new system of using different punctuation in front of each "category" (author, artist, pairing, character) worked really well so long as I was tracking one fandom.

Now I'm tracking four and keeping track of all the different types of punctuation is driving me batty.  I still really like the idea of using punctuation to preface my tags because it makes the "cloud" easier to bundle, but I'm having a hard time keeping track of the what punctuation goes with which fandom.

Yet I dread renaming.

For those who track more than one fandom, how do you do it?  How do you preface your tags to demarcate the fandom it's part of?

For reference, all my fic recs.

Multiple accounts?

  • May. 29th, 2009 at 1:39 PM
I've looked around, but not seen anything about easily switching between multiple accounts. Is it possible? Right now I'm just using the delicious FF extension and having to log in and out each time I want to switch accounts. Slightly easier than actually going to the delicious website and logging in/out, but still more of a pain than I had hoped.

Is there anything I can use to just let me pick which account I want to post to when I'm bookmarking?

more bundle babble

  • Apr. 16th, 2009 at 1:49 AM
Hey guys, want to help me write some software? I know you do! I have been inspired to actually start working on my bundle management interface (working title: BUNDLICIOUS, obviously). I haven't written any code yet; instead, I've been thinking about the actual user interface, and I would like your thoughts!

Here are mine. This is a webapp, so you will go to a site. You click on a button to tell it to go get all your bundles and their tags, and it'll ask for your name and password. (It's going to ask you every time, because I don't want to have to store and encrypt that stuff.)

mockup )
BOX A: This will be where the bundle names actually live, horizontally across the top.
BOX B: Tag list.
BOX C: Where the magic happens.

What I'm thinking is that you will click on a bundle name in Box A, and the tags currently in that bundle will appear in Box C. Box B will have the remaining tags (i.e., the ones NOT in the selected bundle). You will be able to drag tags out of Box C and into Box B to delete them from the bundle, and vice versa (i.e., drag them from Box B to Box C to add them).

I'd also like to have functionality to add new bundles, and delete or rename existing bundles.

As for the tag list in Box B, I figure there will be some links/buttons at the top -- sort by name, sort by count, highlight unbundled, only show unbundled. When you hover over a tag, a little hoverbox will tell you which bundles that tag is currently in. (Hey, maybe if it's not in any bundles, the hoverbox can show you the most recent post you used that tag on? Like [info]murklins' script.)

Hmmmm. Actually, now that I have typed that... maybe there should also be a somewhat lighter-weight option, that would only allow you to add tags to bundles. It would have only two boxes, one with tags and one with bundles. Unbundled tags would be highlighted (or maybe it would only show you unbundled tags?) and you could drag them and drop them on the name of the bundle you want to add them to. The hover stuff would still apply.

That'd be faster if you were just tearing through doing maintenance, but I'm not sure it's quite full-featured enough to really manage your tags and bundles.

Then, of course, there is saving whatever you've done. I don't know much about caching, so. I think saving would probably be easier with the first scenario; I can't be making API calls every second, but it could pretty easily save what you did to one bundle when you move on to the next one. I'm not sure when the saving would happen in the second scenario. Something to think about.

Anyway. What do you guys think? Is it missing anything? Does it sound awful and difficult? Would it make you want to stay home all weekend and bundle?! That is the goal, you see.

bundle up, buttercup.

  • Mar. 17th, 2009 at 1:40 AM
Hi hi hi everyone!

I was talking to [info]murklins just now and she says that one of you is considering deleting all your bundles and starting over. I said, "That sounds reasonable to me. I do that all the time." At least once a month, I'd say, and it's more often when I'm actively obsessing over del.

And then I went and looked at the thread in [info]park_hye_in's last post, which started off being about our love affair with del and degenerated into a lolarious discussion (complete with diagrams) of how much we hate bundling.

So let us talk about bundling!

I don't know about you, but I love bundles, and I seriously fucking hate bundling. I have talked about this a little before, I think, about how fen tend to use bundles to impose a hierarchy on what is effectively a flat structure, which is maybe different from the way non-fen bundle. That said, though, I think bundling should be easy and fun, and it is not. It is terrible and soul-crushing.

How are we going to fix it? I think it is unlikely that del is going to fix it for us.

Current fixes
[info]murklins has some greasemonkey scripts:
  • Auto-Highlight Bundled Tags: Automatically checks off "Highlight tags already in another bundle" anytime the bundle edit page is loaded.
  • Show Unbundled: On the page where you pick a bundle to edit, show the unbundled tags so you know what bundle to choose. (Also comes in a lite version.)
  • Unbunbled to Top: Changes the tag bundle edit page to show unbundled tags at the top of the list. Also, when you hover over an unbundled tag, shows most recent link that has that tag.
She's also written a few other scripts that are sort of related to bundles but not necessarily bundling. You can see all of them here.

What else is there? Are there any other tools or scripts that I don't know about? I did a quick search, but nothing new turned up. It's been a while since I messed with any third-party apps (or even first-party apps, for that matter), so I'm not sure if any of them have implemented any kind of rudimentary bundle management. Do you guys know? What else is out there?

Future fixes
[info]murklins really wants on-the-fly bundling, which would be integrated into a posting widget (Firefox extension, standalone app, whatever). If you tagged a bookmark with an unbundled tag, it would ask you right then if you wanted to add that tag to a bundle.

I have slowly come around to this idea, but I'm not sure it would be enough -- what about the 2,000 tags you already have, that aren't bundled? I guess it could add them to bundles every time you used one, and eventually, maybe, they would all be bundled. But it seems like a less-than-ideal way to do bundle maintenance.

For bundle maintenance, I want a drag-and-drop interface. Or, at the very least, some goddamn selecty boxes. (Sort of like the ones LJ has for friendslist filters.) Or... something else? I am not sure. You guys tell me! What would make bundling easy and painless and fun?

To reiterate
Are you doing anything to make bundling less sucktastic? What is your ideal bundling situation? Is there anything that can be done to make it good times?
I just had a weird moment where someone was like, "Oh, you know, my bookmarks from back in '07..." and I thought, 2007? Did I have a del account back then? So I went and checked, and of course I did! My earliest bookmark in my current non-fandom account is from December 2005, and I also remember starting several miscellaneous accounts before that (I had to delete them, because, you know, my organizational system wasn't coming together properly). I mean, now that I think about it, 2007 wasn't that long ago, but for some reason delicious still kind of seems like a new phenomenon to me. Aha, maybe it's because I love it as much as the day I got it. And I know some of you must have gotten your accounts way before me, because at the time I felt like I was jumping on the bandwagon. You guys! We've been obsessed with tagging for OVER FOUR YEARS!

So I'm curious if any of you will have time-lapse memories as well: When do you think you first started deliciousing? And when did you ACTUALLY start?

checking in; network spamming

  • Feb. 19th, 2009 at 11:39 PM
Hey everyone! I just wanted to check in and see how your deliciouses are doing. How're the new features treating you? Settled into the redesign yet? Can you believe we have been flailing about bookmarking for a little over a year now? (Okay, we have been flailing about it way longer than that; I meant in this comm.)

My REAL question, though, is: do you ever worry about spamming your network?

I tend to go through fandoms pretty quickly, and often they're pretty small fandoms and so if I spend a week reading all the fic in, for example, Slings & Arrows, then I have probably only read 100 stories. But sometimes I decide to start reading in an old, giant fandom, like Doctor Who or due South. Right now it's due South, and I've tagged something like 300 stories in the last two weeks. That is a lot. I started to feel bad about it, and so now almost none of the links are shared; I figure I'll go back in a few months and share them, so that my del-friends can look at their networks without seeing an entire page of Fraser/RayK links.

Is that crazy? I mean, of course it is, but is it crazier than normal? How do you guys read your networks? I am so curious about this; I just have everyone's links in an RSS feed that I check, but there are subscription bundles you can build and filters you can put in place, that sort of thing. Do you use any of that? I'm sure there are ways to find good fic using your network, but I've never really had a handle on it. I just... read my network.

New FF Beta Extension

  • Jan. 20th, 2009 at 4:50 PM
Hey, if you were using the Delicious Bookmarks extension and having the problem where the tags were reordering, there is a new beta version out that claims to fix that. You can get it from the delicious-firefox-extension Yahoo group's Files page (must join group for access):

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/delicious-firefox-extension/files/

Listed fixes:
1) Fix for repeated bookmark migration with "feedly" extension.
2) Fix for tag order not being preserved by the extension.
3) Delicious toolbar can now be repositioned.
4) Fix for problem with Livemarks not getting updated automatically.
5) Fix for extension not showing bookmarks union in tag bundles drop down.

Keep in mind it's a beta!

Tag order problems

  • Dec. 26th, 2008 at 12:53 PM
Has anyone else had this problem? It's driving me mad. I'll add a bookmark, with all my tags input in the correct order, and then when I go to look at my delicious page, the tags are totally scrambled. Not only are they not in the order I want them, they're not even in any logical order (I could understand alphabetical or something). They're just totally random! If I reorder them from the delicious page, it seems to stick, but it's really a huge pain in the ass to have to do that.

Batch Editing Now in Beta

  • Dec. 15th, 2008 at 2:52 PM
Batch editing.

IT'S HERE, BITCHES.

Thoughts/reactions/complaints?

It seems to do most everything YumYum used to do, and since YumYum was the GM script I missed the most I'm kind of peeing myself with glee right now.

I CAN TAG MULTIPLE BOOKMARKS AT ONCE OMG!

  • Dec. 8th, 2008 at 12:40 AM
Hi everybody! A couple recent Delicious blog posts: updated add-ons and a fancy new media player.

But the more interesting part, which you may have seen already but maybe not: a person is "researching the use of Delicious within Fandom" and calling for survey responses (until December 14) from people who know something about that. Yay. I love it when people do research on Delicious.

More links, you say? I regularly save other random Deliciousy news in my bookmarks.

Delicious.com Date Display

  • Oct. 27th, 2008 at 3:08 PM
So, is anyone unsatisfied with the date display? Personally, I really really miss seeing the exact time, and I'm also not so sure I like seeing each date displayed just once. Or maybe I *am* ok with that, but I don't like the way it takes up so much space on the left?

Unless Delicious.com decides to add the exact posting time back into the page, the best I can do, I think, is grab the time out of RSS feeds, which means it won't work on private posts or on any but the most recent 100 links, because that's the most you can get out of RSS. But that might be better than nothing, since I often find myself having to view the RSS source to get exact posting times.

Who has thoughts on improving the date display? I wrote so many useful GM scripts based on comments to my last post, so come on, whine about any issues your have with it, give me ideas.

gimme those bundles!

  • Oct. 21st, 2008 at 1:45 AM
Okay, guys, I totes fixed my bundles problem. I have written a greasemonkey script that grabs the complete bundle names out of the code, and displays that instead of the inexplicably truncated version. It also widens the sidebar a bit, so that long bundle names don't run into the tag count. It should work for everyone's bundles (meaning I can look at some other user's page and see their bundle names, too), although if you have bundle names longer than mine, it may get weird. You can probably safely up the sidebar width to 21em (the script sets it to 20), but much more than that will require more CSS tweakery so that it doesn't run into your bookmarks.

screenshot )

If you install it and run into weirdness, let me know. I use punctuation in my bundle names and had to unescape everything ([fandoms:comics.and.spinoffs] becomes %5Bfandoms%3Acomics.and.spinoffs%5D in the link, so I had to change it back), but I'm not sure the method I used to do it will work in all cases. So please let me know if you notice something like that in your travels.

I could not have done this without [info]murklins, who held my hand and listened to me complain about javascript for many hours.

I'm not sure yet if I want to do this for tags. Might as well, I guess, now that I have some vague idea about what I'm doing. Thoughts?

Man, between this and the styles that me and [info]murklins have been writing, I almost love delicious again! I hope you're all regularly sifting through comments on her last post, because she keeps writing new GM scripts based on the comments. How are you guys settling into the new del? It's been a while. I'm still not used to it and there are things about it I still don't like or understand, but all this time we've spent bending it to our will has definitely helped.

top 10 tags

  • Oct. 16th, 2008 at 2:56 PM
Sorry, forgot to include this one in my last post. I also wrote a style to hide the "top 10 tags" section, because I find it worse than useless. The style hides it on your own page and on other uses' page, but shows it on bookmark history pages (where the top tags are the only tags del shows you, and where it actually makes sense).

Next up: showing me the full names of my bundles! God, I fucking hate that 19-char limit. I think getting bundle names will be pretty easy, and then I'll make it show me my tags.

What else is on the list, guys? What still needs fixing?

Another style!

  • Oct. 16th, 2008 at 2:08 PM
Hey everyone! I finally got off my ass and did some tweaking, and I think I've built a style that lines everything up and makes it actually scannable. I used [info]murklins' style to left-align the tags, and from there I got rid of the weird arrowy background images (the ones that make it looks like the tags are somehow hierarchical) and also killed the bar and the lock icon on private links. I put a blue background on those instead, so they're still obviously private but don't require your eyes to jerk around as you scan your page. Also, link titles are bold.

screenshot )

You can install the style here. (Requires Stylish for Firefox, or GreaseMonkey for... other things. Note that I have not tested any of those other things.) The network page could probably use a little work, but I like what my own pages look like. Thoughts?

(PS - the thing making the pairing tags bold in my screenshot is one of [info]murklins' GM scripts. Find out about all that stuff in her last post.)

Firefox Tweaks for Delicious.com

  • Oct. 7th, 2008 at 2:51 AM
Ever since the Delicious site update, I've been lazily waiting to see what changes they would implement in response to feedback and what greasemonkey scripts other people would come up with to deal with the new design. But in the last few weeks, my irritation with some aspects of the site has overcome my natural sloth (this is a considerable feat -- my powers of sloth are legendary). So hey! Code for all. Mostly only semi-tested by me, so if you install any of these scripts, understand that you're my guinea pigs. Bugs are to be expected, and you can email me at my gmail account (verymurklins) or comment here with any problems you run into.

All but the last of these require Greasemonkey. The last one needs Stylish.

Scripts )

OK! So now I've shown you what I tweak in Delicious. What do you guys do? Have you installed any userscripts or userstyles? Not necessarily ones you've made yourselves, but also anything you've downloaded. Tell me all about it! Post screenshots!

ETA: If you want to find other code that works in Delicious since the site change, people have contributed to a list of styles and gm scripts here: http://support.delicious.com/forum/comments.php?DiscussionID=505

ETA Oct 21:
In comments are a few new things:

ETA Oct 27: Sort Visible Links (by title, url, popularity)

ETA Nov 18: Auto-Highlight Bundled Tags - Automatically check off the "Highlight tags already in another bundle" ticky box

release notesssss

  • Aug. 7th, 2008 at 10:09 PM
hooray, we've released a few fixes! they include: html feeds, unbundled tags, autocomplete a bit better, daily blog posting a bit better, other bundle stuff, updated firefox addon! i put details in this forum thread.

you guys might be crazy but you're good bug-reporters. :)

also perhaps of interest: there's a thread about greasemonkey scripts for the new delicious and a thread where people are discussing "the art of tagging".

Delicious Blog Rescue Tool 0.9.1

  • Aug. 6th, 2008 at 10:20 AM
I released a new version of the Delicious Blog Rescue Tool today that deals with a major bug that was introduced when the new Delicious went live.

If you already have the previous version installed, you should be able to go Tools->Add-ons and click Find Updates from the Add-ons window -- it will prompt you to install the new version. Or you can visit the website and click the Install link: http://deliciousblogrescue.mozdev.org

Please note that no user interface changes have been made to the tool yet to bring it in line with the revamped Blog Posting settings page. I plan to do that when I have a little more time on my hands and am not just scrambling to fix bugs. Please read the New Instructions listed here. It is really important when you use the tool that you input the time correctly, in GMT, and right now it is not intuitive at all!

a few days later...

  • Aug. 4th, 2008 at 12:50 PM
Okay. As far as I can tell, del is not mainstream. It never has been. It's for technogeeks and web fetishists. Do you keep an eye on the top ten links? They're OS X tricks and Lifehacker posts.

... and fanfiction. (Sometimes.)

My hypothesis is that fen are the other main userbase of delicious. I mean, most fannish people I know have a del account or seven. Most of the non-geek people I talk to have never even HEARD of it, or if they have, they shrug and say they don't get it and they move on. Even among technogeeks, I think it's losing its shine (see this post about how no one bookmarks things anymore, for example). Fen still bookmark, though, passionately -- and that's going to be the case for a very long time.

The thing is, fen use del in ways its creators never intended, imagined, nor anticipated. We use bundles to impose a hierarchical taxonomy on a flat structure; we use punctuation to force a sort and, again, to impose a hierarchy; we have thousands and thousands of tags in our accounts; we have long, strange tag names; we have multiple accounts and we scrape our links and send them other places with scripts and feeds; we use it as an important piece of fannish infrastructure (newsletters, reccers, etc); the list goes on and on. It's not simply a place to store our bookmarks so we can find them later. It's much, MUCH more than that.

Worried is not necessarily the right word for what I am right now, but I'm seriously considering leaving del. I interact with it mostly through third-party applications -- I use Pukka to post links and an RSS reader for my network and subscriptions -- so when I go to the site, I go to do very specific things. Those things (the biggest one is bundling) are currently impossible because of bugs, and said bugs are low-priority.

I don't know. I really don't know. I don't think that my concerns should outweigh anyone else's. I know the del team has a lot going on. (I work in web development, so I really, REALLY know, and I don't know how they haven't just killed everyone.) I'm not even sure I know what my point is. I guess I am frustrated right now because I love this site and kind of feel my del account is a work of staggering genius, and I spent hundreds of hours of my life on it, and I feel that mostly, fannish concerns with the new site are being dismissed as weird extreme issues that are pretty much our own fault for using the site in ways it wasn't intended to be used.

And maybe that's true. But I still don't think it's okay. Don't you want to show your power-users some love? Fen are awesome. Throw us a bone once in a while, and we will do amazing things for you. But I guess I keep forgetting that Yahoo owns del now, and they probably do not give a fuck. Sigh.

Sigh. So, yeah, I don't know. I still haven't had as much time to play with it as I'd like, but I can't do any of the things I normally do, so what's the point? And everything else I do sometimes has been made very complicated. Everything takes many more clicks, which is the cardinal sin of interface design, and the click targets have been made very small, and the team keeps saying things are "lined up better," but that is not true by any definition of "lined up" I'm familiar with, and I just. There is a lot of awesome here, but the back-end improvements, for me, have been completely obfuscated by interface design choices that make things harder. At first glance, it looks nice, but I think I like it less now that I've had time to get used to it than I did when it was shocking and new. Argh. Del. I love you. Why must you mistreat me?

Am I overreacting? I do that sometimes. Do you guys have thoughts now that you've had a little more time to get used to it?

new delicious & blog posting

  • Aug. 1st, 2008 at 8:46 AM

Has anyone else found that their auto blog posting didn't work last night (either to LJ or to another blog, like MovableType)? The settings are still there, so I hope this is just temporary . . . But I thought I'd ask here.

Edit, 12:10 PM Eastern: I don't know if it's necessary, but I re-filled in the username and password in the blog settings, and my links just posted. Annoyingly, you don't seem to be able to pick times any more, but hey, I'll take it.

Let's hear it for the... girl!

  • Aug. 1st, 2008 at 12:29 AM
You guys. I am a little bit drunk. BUT.

It was a big day for the Delicious team, and I am just one of the many, many people who whined about my DIRE issues on the forum. And like everyone else, I got amazingly quick responses -- seriously, they are working their asses off over there.

We happen to have a member of that team who occasionally checks in here, lending our comm a legitimacy it really does not deserve.

THANKS SO MUCH, BRITTA, FOR ALL YOUR EXCELLENT HELP!

We love Delicious so much; we criticize (constructively) because we care. <3
