News for a New Year

First off I hope everyone is having (or planning to have) a happy holidays. I wanted to take a minute and review some really exciting (for me anyway) changes for the new year at DelaWhere.

First off, we are switching to a new schedule. We will still be holding events on Wednesdays, but the show will be every other week. We hope this will allow us to come up with some amazing shows. We have features booked for both shows in January, but more on that later. If you see any DelaWhere fans, please try to pass the word.

We don't want you to worry about when the shows are and what is going on. Towards that goal, we are launching a new website in January. The new site will be a lot easier for us to update and hopefully easier for everyone to reference. We're in the process of building it out now and hope to have it up soon.

Along with the new site you'll also be seeing news and events about the reading in Newark. We have integrated the management of the two shows. They still remain separate venues, but we're sharing some administrative overhead like the website. We'll also be coordinating things as a group in the future.

Also, we are always looking for new ways to reach out to the community. If you know of other groups that might be interested in our events or other marketing/promotional oppurtunities please let us know.

If you have any other questions, concerns, or ideas please feel free to contact us.

That said, we'll be ringing in the new year in style, with features on the 2nd and 4th wednesday of next January.

Happy Holidays!

Women of the World Poetry Slam Selection

This week at DelaWhere? Open Mic and Slam will be the selection slam for the DelaWhere? Wilmington representative to WoWPS.

The round structure for this event will be similar to preliminary rounds at WoWPS. There will be four rounds to the competition. Each round will have a differing time limit restriction, 1 minute, 4 minute, 2 minute, 3 minute, respectively. All other rules will remain the same. Order for the first round is determined by draw. Each successive round is ordered highest to lowest, based on the cumulative score thus far. Highest cumulative score is the representative.

Nota Bene: All entrants are responsible for registration and travel fees. All entrants must be PSi members.

Danny Sherrard Features, plus, It's Our First Slam-iversary!

Join us tomorrow night at the Crimson Moon for a FAN-f*cking-TASTIC feature, 2007 National Poetry Slam Individual champ Danny Sherrard!  Plus, we'll have a sweet-ass open mic for you to share your new stuff, your favorite stuff, and your random stuff.  Can't wait to see your smiling faces tomorrow night!

Want to know a little more about Danny?  Check out this bio:

Danny Sherrard is the 2007 Individual National Poetry Slam Champion.
He is the youngest person to do that. So after he did it, he hit the road
with some books and a suitcase, and decided (although it sounds
corny) that he would let his heart be his boss. Buddy Wakefield
has referred to Danny as "the future" and Danny approves of that ovation.
Now, he is taking the slam scene by storm with his kinetic imagery and language. Danny's poetry speaks to a desire to be more than he has ever dreamed while still trying to keep his feet on the ground. He jumps frequently just to test and make sure gravity is still there. He will uplift you, he will inspire you - come see what the "future" of spoken word has to say.

Tomorrow = poetic awesomeness.

FYI...a little over a year ago we started this whole crazy venture.  It's our first anniversary, and we're happy we've made it this far.  We're looking forward to finding out how much better we can become.  Face it, we're pretty kickass as it is, but as the song goes, "it's getting better all the time".  HAPPY SLAM-IVERSARY to us!  Thanks to all of you for continuing to support us and the Crimson Moon.  It's a labor of love--we definitely don't get paid to do this for you.  Why not come and celebrate with us and Danny Sherrard this Wednesday at 8pm?  See you there!

So what are YOU doing this Wednesday? How about seeing Taalam Acey!

Here at the DelaWhere? Open Mic & Slam, we have soooo many great features lined up for this fall.  You guys are really going to dig it, and this week will be no exception.  Our feature this week is none other than Taalam Acey!

What?  You don't know about Taalam?  Make sure you check out his bio at the end of this message, because...wow.  He's a fantastic poet, a novelist, and a really down-to-earth guy.  We know you're gonna love him, and we want him to have a great DelaWhere? welcome.

Plus, we'll have our usual open mic, and if enough people are interested, maybe we can get a little SLAM together?  Hmm?

Oh, and FYI for would-be open-mic readers...if you are really scared that your own poems aren't "good enough" for whatever reason, the open mic is just that--a place to share poetry.  As long as you're not slamming, you don't have to perform your own poems.  We know some of you are shy about your own work, so if that's not what you want to do, it's okay.  We just want to hear poems...anybody's poems!

We really hope you come out this Wednesday, and bring some friends.  This is going to be a great season-opener-type show!  Oh, and wanna know about Taalam Acey himself?  Read on...

About the Feature: Taalam Acey may be the hardest working spoken word artist of his generation. He’s published a novel, a comprehensive collection of poems, an award winning memoir and 9 spoken word CDs. Taalam has been a full time traveling poet since 1999. Tens of thousands of people own his work and many, many more have seen his performances. Acey performs regularly in more than 50 cities in the US and abroad. On average, he is on a plane once every 3.5 days. That’s 100 flights per year to promote spoken word. Taalam’s work has been featured on BET, TV One and in Essence Magazine. He has been a frequent guest at dozens of colleges and Universities and has lectured on contemporary spoken word at the prestigious Graduate School of Education at UC Berkeley. Acey has twice been featured at the Essence Music Festival. He’s been quoted in several newspapers, including the Washington Post, the Philadelphia Weekly and the New Jersey Star Ledger. In addition, Acey’s work has been associated with films that have garnered an Audience Award and a Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. Acey is also an accomplished slam poet who has won slams throughout the United States as well as in Germany and England. He was featured in an acclaimed Radio-One London documentary on slam and Marc Smith, the founder of slam poetry, used Acey’s work as an example of slam poetry in his definitive book.

See you tomorrow night at the Crimson Moon!

love,
Team DelaWhere?

A Retraction.

Hey, we screw up sometimes, because we don't get to run a poetry slam as our day job:

I f**ked up. I blame the confusion of doing real work at the same time as I do MySpace. Rob C will be our feature in OCTOBER on Halloween (woot!), and TALAAM ACEY (the freakin' man, ya'll) will be our feature on September 12.

Sorry, Talaam. Nothin' but love for ya, and we can't wait to see you! :)

Hey Delaware, It's Poetry Night Again!

Open mic poetry tonight! Fun! Food! And of course, the back porch kitty-cat will keep you company if you need to go out back to smoke. Meow.

Come read, come hang out, and come support poetry in Delaware!

Coming on September 12, featured poet Rob C from Denver, CO! You won't want to miss it. Why not have your best poems ready by practicing at our open mic?

FYI...we tend to start our shows a bit late these days. Please try to get to the Crimson Moon by 8pm, but we've been ending up starting around 8:30, sometimes later. The more people we have to read on our open mic, the faster we can get our show started. We'd love to see your cute poet faces tonight in Wilmington!

See you at the Crimson Moon!

Team DelaWHERE? has returned from Texas!

NPS 2007 was one of the best Nationals for a Delaware team yet! 52 out of 75, with plenty of spot-on performances. Come out to the Crimson Moon this Wednesday for inspired new work and tales of Austin, TX! But dude, check this shit out:

Thanks to Zork and LV for having us in their bed. Also for the free pizza later in the week. I guess they don't call it the DelaWHORE for nothing...lol...

NOTE: Everyone was wearing pants for the filming of this video. No actual humping occured during the filming process of this video. Delaware is not to be held responsible for any cases of the vapors resulting in seeing the HOT, HOT people contained within this video. Also, make sure you wait until the end for my excellent closing quote. Rawk on.

Can't wait to see some local lovelies for our open mic this Wednesday! See you at the Crimson Moon!

Love,
Hannah (for all of Team DelaWHERE?)

Come to Our Team Send-Off/Fundraiser and Tell Your Friends!

I don't know why this is coming over the inter-wubs so small!  We've got a bigger version over at our MySpace.

DelaWhere?'s National Poetry Slam Team Seeks Your Support!

What do you get when you combine 4 poets from Delaware, 1 poet from Philadelphia, raucous performances and Olympic-style judging?   Why, the 2007 DelaWhere? The DelaWhere Poetry Open Mic & Slam, held every Wednesday at the Crimson Moon in Wilmington, will be taking a break from their usual poetry routine on August 1 st to bring you a night of music and poetry to benefit the 2007 team.  There will be poetry performances by members of Team DelaWhere? as well as musical performances by very special guests Gina Degnars (of Stygian Veil) and Chris Malinowski (of The Collingwood)!   There will also be giveaways and a silent auction, plus the bar and the kitchen will be open for your drinking and dining pleasure.  Poetry chapbooks will also be for sale.
