    Just a small thing~
My new favorite perfume is 'Chanel Allure Sensuelle' after smelling it on a friend a week ago!
It smells very earthy and woodsy, with lots of patchouli, but more like something from an enchanted forest, not too heavy nor "department store" perfumy at all, at least not to my nose.

If you like the sent of patchouli but get tired of comments like, "Oh god, who's wearing patchouli!" or "What the hell smells like a tree in here?!", when you walk into a room then want to shrink into a corner, you might like this better.
You'll still have that earthy tree-root smell and get your woodsy patchouli fix, yet it's a touch more sophisticated!
    I highly recommend it.

Now if only I could find something that smells like a balsam Christmas tree without smelling like, well, a Christmas tree! Sometimes I like to wear a balsam/piney woods/fir tree scent, even in July, and get "You smell like a Christmas tree!" comments. Not that it matters really...
If I want to smell like a tree I will.
    ;)

I know I've posted this poem before, some time ago, but I do love it and this author so.

    Twilight on the Snow
    ~Clark Ashton Smith

Before the hill's high altar bowed,
The trees are Druids, weird and white,
Facing the vision of the light
With ancient lips to silence vowed.

No certain sound the woods aver,
Nor motion save of formless wings—
    Filled with phantasmal flutterings,
    With thronging gloom and shadow-stir.

    Unseen, unheard, amid the dell
Lie all the winds that mantic trees
    Have lulled with crystal warlockries
    And bound about with Merlin-spell.

Latest in the Ballad of Bumley
Tonight, our landlord got into it with "Bumley," shouting and threatening. We had been watching a movie, but turned it off when we heard the shouting. We stood inside our apartment door, listening, knowing there was not a damned thing we could do that would help either of them. The landlord told Bumley that he was coming back to the building in an hour, and if he found Bumley back, he'd call the cops.

It's really really cold tonight. We hadn't had the heart to turn Bumley out for the past several days because of the cold and the snow, even though he really, really stinks. We know Bumley's harmless except to our noses, and a lot of the other people in the building have been turning a blind eye too. But tonight's confrontation was ugly. LL was shouting, and turfed Bumley out and warned him he'd be back.

It didn't take fifteen minutes for Bumley to be back in the vestibule, knocking on the inside door, pleading to be let in because it was so cold. I went out to talk to him, and I warned him that the LL might hurt him if he was found back in the building, and he really needed to find somewhere else to be. I went back inside, and Bumley settled himself into the vestibule.

I called our local precinct to see if they could help Bumley find a safe place to sleep it off. They suggested I call 311, to get in touch with Homeless services. I talked to a couple of people, explained the situation, and a team was dispatched to pick Bumley up and take him to shelter.

We went back to our movie, and heard another commotion in the hall. One of the tenants from upstairs was yelling at Bumley, and turned him out of the building. Not five minutes later, the team from Homeless Services arrived, asking where Bumley was so they could help him. [facepalm] We looked around the block for him, no sight. They said they were sorry, but they had to go because they had a lot of calls to respond to. I guess they decided to take one more turn around the block, though, because just as we were getting ready to go inside, we spotted Bumley shambling down the street, a short block away. We noticed their van, and flagged them to point out where he was. They pulled down the street, and parked in the driveway across his path, and got out to talk to him. We watched from down the block, and quickly realized that he was not going to go with them.

We went down to see if we could help, to show him a friendly face and convince him that these people really were here to help him, and they could take him somewhere warm to get food and a decent place to sleep. I was so proud of clemve -- he worked really hard talking to Bumley, and finally he managed to convince him to go with the HS people. When they went back to talk to him, he looked a bit wild-eyed at me, and I started to talk to him, telling him that really, this would be much better than getting kicked out of our building over and over again tonight until the LL calls the police and has him arrested for trespass. Then I asked him his name. "My name? Is Bela. I Hungarian."

"Bela. Thank you. Will you please go with these people and get warm? They will help you."

    "Help me?"

"Yes, Bela. They will." The HS people nodded encouragingly.

"OK. I go." He shambled over to the minivan's side door, and seemed baffled as to how to get in. Unfortunately at that moment, his pants chose that moment to head south to his ankles.

"Bela, you have to pull up your pants," the HS workers said. He tried, but he was *soooooo* drunk, he really had trouble with it. Finally, he managed to crawl in (after losing one of the slippers he calls shoes), and they all got into the van to take him off. Yes, they picked up the shoe. clemve and I thanked the HS workers and wished them a happy holiday, and made our way back down the block to our apartment. We assured ourselves we'd done the best thing for him, and hung up our coats and went back to finish the movie.

And then my cellphone rang. It was K., the lady caseworker with Homeless Services. It seems that Bela has some really bad short-term memory issues when he's this blasted (and perhaps all the time, I'm not sure -- we so rarely see him sober), and they'd gotten a few blocks away when he started asking where he was, and demanding to be let out of the van. In an ambulance, he'd qualify as AMS, and we could take him to the hospital for assessment, but the HS people have to be very careful about false arrest issues, so they had no choice but to let him out. She said they asked if he wanted to the hospital to sleep it off, but he refused that too. They even offered him a free ride on the subway so he could at least stay warm, but no.

So Bela is somewhere out there, in the sub-freezing temperatures. There's nothing else we can do for him. You can only lead a homeless man to help; you can't force him to take it. Dammit.

    how do silent monks sing?
This has been making the rounds, but I hadn't clicked on it until now. You *must* watch this -- it's priceless, and an instant mood-lifter. Enjoy!

ETA: And apparently, the ones above were mere copycats. This is supposedly the original "Silent Monks" video.

    Welcome Yule!
For all whom these words hold meaning, Blessed Solstice to you, and Welcome Yule!

eta: Amusingly enough, that was not the icon I chose. I'm not sure how it was changed, but it works somehow. The one I picked, "Pagan Holidays," isn't even right next to it! Bizarre. Sometimes I think LJ has a mind of its own.

    okay.
I just figured out that I could change the brightness of my monitor by pressing one of the buttons on the bottom of it. A dur hur hur. In my defense, it's on the bottom and it's tiny. Movie, photo, gaming, text, custom. I figure photo for just... whatever. And then movie for, well, movies. I don't really play computer games much, unless it's Mahjong or something lame like that. I don't knooow.

I've got a funny story. I think it is, anyway. My brother was asleep earlier and I walked over and asked if he was going to go out to eat or if he was staying in and he asks, "Who is the Golden Eagle?" and I said, "I don't know, but are you eating here tonight?". And he says, "Oh, sorry. I dreamed you were talking to me about football." Which was understandable, because there's a football game on but it was still pretty funny.

Also, I'm sure you heard about Brittany Murphy.

    Christmas thing.
    Dear Santa...

    Dear Santa,

    This year I've been busy!

Last week I signed my organ donor card (28 points). In February I bought porn for [info]croakvegas (10 points). In March I bought porn for [info]slayheim (-10 points). Last Saturday I farted in an elevator (-6 points). In July I donated bone marrow to [info]bzzinglikeneon in a life-saving procedure (300 points).

Overall, I've been nice (322 points). For Christmas I deserve an Easy-Bake Oven!

    Sincerely,

    It's clemve's BIRTHDAY!
Today is my darling husband's birthday. I've been working hard to make it a nice one; I know his b'days haven't always been so pleasant. Happy birthday, sweetheart!

We've been watching the Pixar Shorts special -- I was pleased to introduce him to some of my favorite bits. I just love the "For the Birds" short -- I giggle like a maniac, even after seeing it a dozen times or more. I'd never seen the one with the bunny and the magician before -- priceless! Still love the snowman in the snowglobe, too. The rats one was interesting and amusing -- hadn't seen that one before -- and it was nice to see how well "Tin Toy" (I think Pixar's first short? Or was that "Luxo Jr."?) holds up after all this time and development of the technology. The little _Toy Story_ vignettes are priceless too -- I *love* the little aliens! The one from _Wall-E_ (with Burn-E) is better if you've seen the movie, but still, awesome stuff.

OK, I've seen this one. Back to baking -- clemve requested an apple pie instead of cake, so pie he gets! It's snowing like a hamster out there (as Esther would say), so it's a good way to spend the day. Goulash (my late grandmother's recipe) is bubbling away on the stove -- dinner soon! Lovely winter comfort foods are the order of the day.

I hope you all are having as lovely a day as we are. (Except for the broken crockery, of course...)

    Me and my teapots
I've had quite a history with large, cobalt-blue teapots, it seems. I've had three, all of a model once sold by Target. They first came out with them about 1999-2000, and I immediately bought one because I thought they were so pretty. Target had a whole cobalt-blue line -- at that time it was quite fashionable.

My first was destroyed by a boyfriend. He was a well-meaning, rather sweet boyfriend, so I'll not out his identity here (but I will say that he is, as far as I know, not on FB at all anyway). I had a rather bad cold, and said boyfriend had come over to my apartment to see if I needed anything at the store and such. I said I'd love a pot of tea, and told him where the tea and the pot were. After a few minutes, I didn't hear the kettle whistling, so I toddled into the kitchen to discover that my rather sheltered and inexperienced-in-the-kitchen boyfriend had put my lovely cobalt-blue teapot DIRECTLY ON THE BURNER, and was attempting to boil water in it.

I was immediately both upset and amused; it's hard to be mad at someone who's trying to be nice to you. But still, the damage was done, and that pot never held water properly again. It became a planter. Thankfully, Target was still selling the cobalt line, so we went over once I was feeling better and he bought me a new one. I had that teapot for several years until last year, when the Orange Menace (better known as my cat William) decided it was in his way while he was cruising the kitchen counters, and knocked it to the floor with a spectacular smash.

I was pretty tweaked off at him for this; while I have several teapots (some pretty, some sentimental, some just purely functional), this was my favorite teapot in my favorite shade of blue, dammit! It held just enough tea (several large mugs, in fact) to keep me going for an hour or two before getting cold. I searched high and low in stores and on eBay, but no luck on finding a new cobalt-blue teapot that held enough tea for my tastes. Target had long since discontinued that entire line, and didn't have anything that I liked enough to add to my collection. I wanted a nice big BLUE teapot, dammit.

I did find an auction on eBay that seemed promising; it was a lot auction for many teapots from an estate, and among them were a couple of likely looking replacements. I decided what could it hurt, so I put in a bid for $12 -- one for each teapot in the lot. The seller's starting bid was a dollar, so I had a bit of room to move.

Amazingly enough, no one else bid. I got twelve teapots for a dollar, plus $15 for shipping. I had it shipped to my grandmother's house, and one day last winter, we amused ourselves by unpacking the teapots, one by one, from the big box of styrofoam peanuts. That was when I learned that appearances are deceiving, and each and every one of the teapots was a single-serve model. D'oh! Still, Mama liked a couple of them, and one of them was a beautiful art-deco/Fiesta style which is now one of my favorite pots to look at. But, it's still not big enough for my voracious tea consumption, alas. The hunt went on.

And then one day last year at the Salvation Army Thrift Store on 96th Street and Broadway in Manhattan, I came upon a grimy, greasy, dingy teapot marked $2.99. It was barely recognizable as blue. I looked on the bottom, and found the same maker's mark the others had, and was filled with joy and jubliation! I found my teapot again! Whoo hoo! I could barely contain my glee as I brought it to the cashier, and wrapped it carefully in the latest issue of the _Onion_ (I guess they raided the newspaper dispensers for wrapping paper) and brought it home. It took a bit of scrubbing, but it cleaned up beautifully, and for more than a year, I've enjoyed my tea out of my huge cobalt teapot.

Until tonight. Poor clemve-- he was actually in the kitchen preparing to make tea when he discovered it. It was odd -- the cat disaster had crashed to the floor, but somehow one of the small pyrex custard dishes had landed in the open mouth of the teapot, breaking it in two. Then, somehow the pyrex dish fit in to the pot, and clemve first noticed the dish IN the pot, and was figuring out how it got in there when he reached for the handle and discovered the pot was bisected. I found out about it when I went into the living room and found him researching cobalt teapots on the web. My sweet husband -- it's his birthday, and he's thinking about replacing *my* broken teapot. I love him, I think I'll keep him.

Oh, and William? Hasn't come out of his hiding place since he smashed all the crockery. clemve checked him out far enough to make sure he wasn't hurt, and the cat slunk back into the hideyhole. Probably best -- I don't think I could stand the sight of him right now. Damn cat! Until he sits at my feet, purring, begging forgiveness...probably around dinnertime. Argh!

And yes, he's the one on the left in the icon. Doesn't he look so...innocent? Grrr!
