    New music redux
So today I tried out some new music. I snagged a copy of violinist David Garrett's new album, Encore. I saw an ad on PBS for a concert they're airing, and it seemed intriguing. It was pretty nifty -- his choice of tunes is a fangeek's dream. I listened to Encore while taking my chem exam today, and had to keep checking my player to see what the titles were. From a great rendition of "Smooth Criminal" to selections from Highlander and Pirates of the Caribbean, the album had me smiling and giggling inwardly the entire time I listened. Highly amusing, and lots of fun!

SCA folks: Anybody going to SRWC?
Subject pretty much says it all -- anybody going to SRWC? We're not making Pennsic this year, so this will be it for us for most of the summer, SCA-wise. We'll have the booth open -- come by and visit!

    Need new music!
I have decided that I am utterly bored with the selection of music I currently have loaded on my mp3 player. Now, I do have gigs and gigs of music in my iTunes that I can put on it, but I'm interested in something *new* (or at least new to me). We got some iTunes gift cards for our wedding (waves at christianet, yay! Thanks again!), and they really need to be used.

So? Any suggestions? I'm open to just about anything -- my tastes are nothing if not eclectic, and I'll listen to just about anything *once*. (That's what the sample selections are for, so I don't wind up buying stuff I wind up hating!)  What say the denizens of the f'list?

    They can do WHAT???
I'm watching the nightly news report, and a few minutes ago, this came across the airwaves:

    http://www.wesh.com/money/20000575/detail.html

Basically, it talks about how some credit card companies are tracking customers' purchases and their buying patterns (and NOT their paying patterns) can affect credit score, interest rate, and caps on credit limits. Specifically, regular thrift store shoppers are at risk for credit problems simply because they shop at thrift stores.

Uh, what? WHY would a credit card company give the slightest crap as to whether or not I buy things at the Salvation Army or at Macy's? If I pay my bill on time, why would my buying patterns affect my credit rating in the slightest???  I use my credit card for everything I can -- I get points towards free books/products on Amazon for my purchases!

This, of course, is upsetting to both customers and the thrift store proprietors. They're generally linked to charities, and if people are afraid of losing their credit rating for shopping there, people might stop using thrift stores and the income to the charities would be curtailed. This is just crazy. WTF???

I'm still frustrated because insurance companies can raise your rates if your credit score is less than stellar. Uh, what? Let's see -- I'm having trouble paying my bills, so you'll RAISE my premium price and make it even harder to pay my bills? For something I legally *have* to carry if I own a car? ARGH!  This is insane.

    Numbers and more numbers.
I feel like my waking hours are wrapped up with tracking and balancing neurotic numbers, day in, day out: blood sugar, carbohydrates, fiber, protein, mono and polyunsaturated fat, calories, portion size, minutes of aerobic exercise, minutes of stretching, hours of sleep. Remember to limit caffeine. Remember to breath. Rinse and repeat, three to five times daily.

I hate these numbers and details. Yet I obsess over them. This obsession starts to feel unhealthy at times, and I'm sure it annoys the hell out of my family, but there are tangible rewards to it. For example, I weigh less than I did when I got married 13 years ago. My figure is better and I have better muscle definition. And my autoimmune GI disorder seems to be in remission.

Hooray for my immune system not attacking my gut. Seriously. That alone is worth it.

I have two more doctor appointments and a diabetes education class this month, then two months of mind-body medicine classes starting next month. And I still need to make an optometry appointment. And then . . . I should be good until October, when I have to get blood glucose and lipids checked again.

Hobbies I need to make time for: creative writing and world-building, roleplaying, fall/winter garden planning, and Aya's Halloween costume. I also need to work on patching up my marriage - but that takes two.

There are not enough hours in the day.

Do I want to be a whale or a mermaid?
Stolen from [info]huushiita, who stole it from [info]owls_dream

Recently, in large French city, a poster featuring a young, thin and tanned woman appeared in the window of a gym.
It said: THIS SUMMER DO YOU WANT TO BE A MERMAID OR A WHALE?¨

A middle aged woman, whose physical characteristics did not match those of the woman on the poster, responded publicly to the question posed by the gym.

    To Whom It May Concern:
Whales are always surrounded by friends (dolphins, sea lions, curious humans).
They have an active sex life, they get pregnant and have adorable baby whales.
They have a wonderful time with dolphins stuffing themselves with shrimp.
They play and swim in the seas, seeing wonderful places like Patagonia, the Barren Sea and the coral reefs of Polynesia .
Whales are wonderful singers and have even recorded CDs. They are incredible creatures and virtually have no predators other than humans.
They are loved, protected and admired by almost everyone in the world.

Mermaids don’t exist. If they did exist, they would be lining up outside the offices of Argentinean psychoanalysts due to identity crisis. Fish or human?
They don’t have a sex life because they kill men who get close to them not to mention how could they have sex?
Therefore they don’t have kids either. Not to mention who wants to get close to a girl who smells like a fish store?
The choice is perfectly clear to me; I want to be a whale.

P.S. We are in an age when media puts into our heads the idea that only skinny people are beautiful, but I prefer to enjoy an ice cream with my kids, a good dinner with a man who makes me shiver and a coffee with my friends.
With time we gain weight because we accumulate so much information and wisdom in our heads that when there is no more room it distributes out to the rest of our bodies.
So we aren't heavy, we are enormously cultured, educated and happy.
Beginning today, when I look at my butt in the mirror I will think, ¨
Good gosh, look how smart I am.

    "ffs."
Can you guys do me a favor? I need more votes before I can post winners over @ garrett_stills. It only takes a couple of seconds! This challenge has gone on way too long, plus participation over there has been kinda BLAH lately. Hopefuly the Tron movie will bring us more members. No telling if the movie is going to be good or not. Hopefully it will be.

ANYWAY, the voting post is HERE!

Thanks in advance, I really REALLY appreciate it.

You guys, I am hugely pissed off.
The murder of a trans woman is never a good news topic to read about, but I'm more than slightly annoyed by this one:

Camilla was murdered by her boyfriend 'Vladimir F' after he found out that she had previously undergone a sex change operation.

Why am I annoyed1? Let's see if we can break it down:
    1. The "pre-op picture" in the article really isn't necessary. At all.
    2. No matter how I googlesearch to try to find out more information, that is the only news article I can find. Blogs calling her a "tranny" and forums where they're saying she deserved it because she was "lying" and "really a man"2, those I can find.
    3. The article was quite possibly old news by the time it was published - the first comments there are dated the 10th of July, whereas this blog3 was apparently posted on the 26th of June. Yes, I know, those things aren't the most reliable methods of time checking, but I haven't got anything else right now.
There was probably more that annoyed me about this, but I've been trying to write this for an hour now, and I'm too generally pissed off that I really can't get my head to work properly.

    1Besides the hugely obvious, obviously.
2I have seen examples of both - I will give them out privately on request.
3Said post is rage-making in it's own ways.

Well, it seems I've been away from LJ for awhile. Sorry anyone who's still watching me or anything. I've been busy. Busy with what, you ask? Why, I'll tell you.

I've been - wait for it- writing! *throws confetti* Yes, I've been working on some original fiction, and I'm working on joining some communities that I can post some of my stuff to, as well as discus writing in general. So, expect to hear more from me soon.

This is awesome! Ever since I was three and first saw Disney's "Fantasia" on TV back in 1968, I absolutely fell in love with this image of Diana/Artemis with her thin crescent moon bow and shooting an arrow!

I have the statue shown here in my icon and I just found this sterling silver pendant version by Paul Borda~

In memoriam: G. Scott Eskinazi, 1967-2009

I've been very concerned for weeks (hell, months) for my dear friend Scott. He's always had respiratory problems, and we often commiserated about them. He's had issues with pneumonia (first walking, then deadly) for months, and has been on more different antibiotics in the last six months than most people take in years, not to mention the anti-inflammatory steroids (which have their own problems).

He'd been in the hospital for two weeks, but was improving until two days ago when he was suddenly taken to the MICU and intubated and put on a respirator. A friend last night posted on the EK list that he lost his battle in the early evening. His lady posted earlier today that he passed around 6pm after a 20-minute fight -- having run such codes, I can just imagine what it was like for all of them.

I am just sick and miserable over this. Scott was really and truly one of the good ones. We'd been friends for decades; he was one of the most supportive, kind, gentle men I've ever known. He and Maria got together a few years ago, and I was so happy that he'd finally found happiness -- if anybody deserved it, he did. He also had a wicked sense of humor, and could cut to the heart of a situation and could diffuse drama like no one else I've ever known.

Scott's passing is hitting me like David's did. I'm in a fog, and having a lot of trouble functioning today. This wasn't as huge a shock as David's death was (David just dropped at home; Scott was in the hospital for two weeks), but it's still another bit of proof that the universe is not in the least bit fair.

I need to stop now. I'm in the school library, and will start crying openly again if I keep going. But dammit, this is not fair. Scott was one of the best, and for him to be taken from us at only 42 years of age is WRONG.

Scott was SCA, and was also a fixture at local fandom events and conventions. He was a fixture at Lunacon, and would always be there to lend a hand.

Rest well, dear friend. You are going to be sorely missed.
