Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
So imagine you have your entire LiveJournal sitting on your hard drive as an SQL database. What do you want to do with it?

Granted it's pretty fugly at the moment and nothing actually works, aside from the journal downloading part (most annoying code ever written). I'm just playing around with the interface at the moment. So what should be on there? Ideas I've had so far:
  • Export to random formats (but what?)
  • Mass search-and-replace
  • Search for entries by keyword
  • Maybe open a raw SQL interface to just type your own stuff in

I would like to see option to synchronize with something like blogger.com or wordpress. Export to these formats will be much appreciated.
I certainly would like to play with raw SQL interface - for example to do automatic tagging for my old posts.

Oooh! Yes!

(and for DS: the ability to post the same entry to multiple blogs/accounts...)

Perhaps looking at this code would help?

Seconded on export to WordPress.

Export to PDF and ODF would be nice too.

But more importantly than all of the above: make it work with Firefox 3! It's driving me nuts that I can't use DS since I upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04...

Just a quick brainstorm...

Judging by the KDE-looking window decorations in your image, I'm guessing this is going to be cross-platform, right? (*hopes*)

An advanced search would be nice... Allow a search between certain dates... or complex queries... ( +career -walmart )
A raw search would be good for those of us who speak SQL.

Full (or by number of results) list of subjects rather than monthly...

...create playlist from music?

List links...

...search comments...

Optional "smart search" a la Google's "Did you mean..."

...and just to give you a real challenge... a J2ME version for PDAs and smartphones.

j2ME version is not a challenge. It is suicide.

It's entirely XUL, should run on anything Firefox runs on.

Definitely would like to be able to do a keyword search, and add tags to resulting entries.

Formats - probably .doc .rtf .txt and .pdf are most universal?

Searching entries is definitely something I've wanted the LJ site itself to have. Search the actual entries and titles would be good. And of course by the tags if possible.

Would it search the raw text or the html code too? Say I wanted to find entries with image links and search for "img" .. will the downloaded journal entries have the html intact?

Would it be possible to print entries? (or do you already have that in DS, I can't remember because I never tried it)

Thats all I can think up for now!

Mass editing of tags would be nice. I had a lot of posts before tags were implemented that I had to go through them by hand to tag each and every one of them. maybe a list with checkboxes or something. but that might have to be a completely different interface.

And toss in another vote for porting over to wordpress, options to have tags transferred and to add what category you want them filed under.

Echoing the request for mass tags, user pics, moods.

Search implementations based off of text, filters, mood.

An additional feature unrelated to SQL or SQLite being on the client, it would be nice if there were some way to synchronize drafts between multiple computers. I tend to not make posts because I have a half written draft on my work computer (written during a slow day) and I can't finish it at home. Maybe implemented through Google Notebook or some other web API.

I'll post something incomplete with private-lock private-lock eye icon (like friends-lock friends-lock icon) and then I can pick it up later someplace else and continue.

I would like to see import/export from XML, HTML, TXT, ODF, RTF, and PDF export. Any searching would be great, and raw SQL would be the icing because almost anything could be implemented with some code. SQLite is compact enough that if you wanted to cart the file with you on a thumbdrive (or RW DVD) it could be easily done.

Export as iCal. Being able to integrate with Mozilla Calendar (or whatever it's called right now) would be super sweet.

One question: Does the download include comments and their threading? If not, can we get that? (I've read that doing it sucks, but is still possible)

Export to PDF
Export to DOC
Export to HTML
Export to XML
Export to TXT
(for export formats that support it, possibly include web links?)

Mass entry changes (from public, f-locked, friends group, or private TO anything)

Full entry search... I dislike the fact that it's nearly impossible to go back and search my private or friends entries.

Maybe include the ability to change tags on entries based on search criteria? I know I posted a lot of a certain type of entry I'd want tagged, before tagging was introduced.

Regexp searches!!!!

Granular journal statistics -- entries, comments, etc., per month/year/day. Totals. Averages. Start dates/run dates. Etc., etc.

Those are just a few that come to mind.
