Why it's good to know people [Jul. 19th, 2008|04:44 pm]

[Current Mood | accomplished]

So, for those who missed out on the hint Thursday, you would have found me at 1 Infinite Loop in Cupertino yesterday.

Or, for the less cartographically inclined, here.

As it turns out, Kim Silverman (probably known to most of you as Lord Silvermane) is a senior engineer at Apple and [info]goodwitch779 managed to get me lunch and a tour with him.

While I could wax poetic about the Apple campus being such a bitching place to work, how the cafeteria is run by the former freaking manager of Il Fornaio (I enjoyed the grilled tofu. This should mean something), or how small(!) the global headquarters of Apple actually is, I'll write up part of my Q&A session instead:
-Why only AT&T as the iPhone carrier? It's mostly due to the Visual Voice Mail. We originally offered it to Verizon, with the condition that they rewrite their voice mail code. They told us to fuck off. [His words, not mine] AT&T was next, and they were willing to do it, but in return they wanted to be the exclusive provider.
-Why no iChat for the iPhone? It's the reason why the price dropped for the 3G iPhone. AT&T wanted to exorbitantly charge for SMS, and we wanted them to subsidize the hardware in exchange.
-Why $10 for the iPhone software upgrade? Technically iPhone users were charged $10 for their upgrade, but their price was made part of their AT&T bill and given as a kickback to Apple to produce the upgrade. Apple isn't allowed to upgrades for either product for free because, of all things, Enron. After the scandal, the SEC ruled that companies couldn't report profits on unfinished products, which is what a pre-2.0 iPhone or iPod touch is seen as. Since Apple was already paid for them, they shouldn't be adding more things onto them.
-What's the focus behind Snow Leopard? This is our opportunity to take a look at the operating system we've built in the last seven years and make it more streamlined, rather than tack new things on. Of course, there's a large number of features that didn't make it into Leopard that the developers want to incorporate this time, so the question becomes how many new things can be added.

And then, after some card tricks, it was time to exploit his employee discount at the Company Store (a completely separate entity from the Apple Retail Stores) and come home with new swag. SWAG!

oh. my. fucking. god.... [Jul. 19th, 2008|04:50 pm]

The Dark Knight, seriously, best movie I've seen in a really long time. Tons of really great lines that will be showing up in status messages soonish (I'll wait til the important people have seen it though so as not to spoil anything), beautifully filmed and oh my god, I was not disappointed with a single actor (except of course Bale, but hey- I don't like Batman.)
Yes, you read that right, I don't even like Batman and this was one of the best movies I've seen in a really long time. The reason I loved this movie so much was the same reason I would watch the other Batman movies and the shows: the villains. Yeah, I have often been known to have a soft spot for the evil characters, but only when they're done really well. I don't find interest in evil characters who are just doing it for money or the ones whose motivations are so superficial they're unbelievable.
possible spoilers )

Okay, all done squeeing, since Ben is being stupid and killing my mood.

Other news, going for induction Monday morning. Brit got home in time to be there. This makes me quite happy. Been sleeping well, thanks to the Ambien. Torin is still trying to escape. Stephie's getting married. Kebin was joining the Marines but changed his mind. He's still dating the psycho bitch, but he gets that she is psychotic, he just fails at breaking up with anyone. I don't see them together much longer (thank god.)
Finished the first season of Heroes. Working on downloading season two. Sure there is more, but Ben won't shut up, so I'm going to wrap up now.

I just finished season 4 of Doctor Who, and it had me in tears. I really liked Donna. She was finally feeling good about herself, and then she has to have her mind wiped. I was actually expecting her to die.

I loved how all the characters were back together again. I have a feeling Mickey's going to be taking Tosh's spot on Torchwood, and maybe Jack will finally convince Martha to take Owen's place.

Now my head's all achy and I feel like crap. And there will be no more Doctor Who or Torchwood for a long while, because they're both finished for the year.

Sad.

I can always download episodes of older doctors, I suppose, when I'm in the mood.

I've now gone to see this movie twice - once at a midnight showing, and again today at a 9pm show. And oh my god, this is THE best comic book movie adaptation I've ever seen. Heath Ledger is AMAZING, hands down easily on the short list of awesome movie villains. I'm still debating if he bounces Darth Vader out of the top spot; it feels like sacrilege, but the characterization is just ... wow. He makes the movie. With comic book and graphic novel based flicks, the villain or villains often make or break it. I've always thought DC had better villains, anyway. The genre, with movies like this, The Incredible Hulk, and Iron Man, is finally coming into its own, in my opinion. I can't say enough good things about this movie - go see it if you haven't. If you have, what did you think of it?

Your result for The Color Code Test...

Color Code: WHITE: The Peace Keeper

31% Red, 31% Blue, 34% White and 3% Yellow!

The Color Code Test )

Edit: Since I scored so close on Red and Blue I'll also list the general info about those as well.

RED (Motive: POWER) - These are the power wielders. Power: the ability to move from point A to point B and get things done, is what motivates and drives these people. They bring great gifts of vision and leadership and generally are responsible, decisive, proactive and assertive.

BLUE (Motive: INTIMACY) - These are the do-gooders. Intimacy: connecting, creating quality relationships and having purpose, is what motivates and drives these people. They bring great gifts of quality and service and are generally loyal, sincere, and thoughtful.

Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions [Jul. 18th, 2008|06:38 pm]

 Hmm...maybe I should add tags for the systems these games are on. I think I will, starting with this one.^^;

Anyway, this game is an "enhanced port" of the original Final Fantasy Tactics on the PS1, and, having played and beaten the PS1 original, I'm almost embarassed at how out of practice I am with this game. ^^;

The differences between this and the original:

-New translation(new names of some characters/items/whatever, new script, and so on)
-Added secret characters
-a couple of new jobs
-some mulitplayer
-animated cutscenes(with voice acting in the English version, something the Japanese version doesn't have, or so I've read)
-there's probadly something else I'm missing.

Graphically, it's the same as the PS1 version(2D sprites), as is the gameplay, for the most part. For someone used to the PS1 version, it'll take a little time to get used to hitting the "X" button to confirm selections instead of the "circle" button. Same with using the analog nub instead of "R" and "L" to rotate the map during battles. Sometimes it pays to read the instructions before diving headfirst into the game. ^^;

The only downside is that there's slowdown for a lot of attacks, but it's barely noticeable and you get used to it. The slowdown only adds abou 1 second to attack animations, so it's not as bad as some people like to make it out to be. In fact, in a way, I think it makes some of the cooler attack animations look more impressive. ^^;

So, if you've played the PS1 version and it's one of your favorite FF games(it's tied with FF8 for the second spot on my fave FF list. FF6 takes the top spot ^^; ), and you have a PSP(this game was one of my big reasons for wanting a PSP, I love it), then I recommend getting it. Besides, it just got a price drop at Gamestop and Best Buy and is now $20 instead of $40(I got the last copy at the closest Gamestop), so go get it now! Run! XD

One little compliment can make you feel amazing. So give me a compliment, anything in the entire world, even that my shoelaces are pretty. Put this in your journal. And once you get some comments, put that entry in a memory or tag and when you are feeling down, just go to that entry and this will remind that you're not so bad in other people's eyes after all.

Yeah, I decided to do this too.  I guess just because it sounded interesting.  Feel free to say anything.  Don't feel like you have to.  Anyway, until next time.
