Keeping up with the laundry and dishes

Ever since school let out 10 days ago, I've been diligently keeping up with the laundry and dishes. When the kids had their activities during the school year, it was so easy to keep up with washing and drying clothes, but finding time to fold and put away was a challenge. At it's worst, the turnaround time on clean clothes was two weeks, although at normal times, it was closer to five days.

But as of this VERY SECOND, laundry and dishes are caught up!!

Note to self: If you deal with junk mail and bills every day (or even every week) instead of letting it all build up until you can't stand the sight of the stack anymore, it will all be a lot less stressful to deal with and important papers won't get lost in the shuffle. Plus, paying bills late is bad.

On the up side, I have almost everything dealt with, including all backed up stuff that I couldn't bring myself to look at before.

Yes, I made a post very like this a few months ago (yes, I did actually pay bills between that post and this post, but they started backing up again due to more fun and exciting medical stuff). I have a new pile of stuff to feed to my shredder, and a few things to file.

Well, one of my neighbors was visiting the other day and we decided to finally get rid of those, as well as some boxes that have been sitting out on my balcony basically since I moved in.

We threw the boxes off the balcony into the parking lot (I'm on the second floor), which was so satisfying - it is something I have wanted to do for months. I just never got around to it (the dreaded inertia). Then I swept the balcony. So, while it's still ugly and little with peeling paint, it looks twenty times better than it did. And I'm planning to get some potted plants to put in the corners to brighten it up a little.

27 Things, Dishes, and SL

Yesterday evening, before I went to bed, I did the 27 thing fling and picked up a bunch of stuff that was laying around the living room and kitchen.

I also did half to two thirds of the dishes that need to be washed.

And this may sound silly to some people, but I've also been spending time organizing my inventory in the online game Second Life. It's so easy for it to get totally out of control (sound familiar to anyone? :), and I'm afraid I have let that happen - at worst, I had over 13,000 items (aren't you glad you can't hit a button and find out exactly how many items there are in your home?!). I've gotten rid of at least a thousand items in the past couple of days - At this moment, I have 12,197 (edit: now down to 12,103, since I'm alternating between sorting there and typing here).

For the SL inventory-organizing, Flickr is a useful tool. I'm taking pictures of all the items that I'm keeping and I'm uploading them to my SL-only flickr account. I go through all of the different kinds of stuff, figure out if I want to keep it or not, take pictures of what I decide to keep, and delete what I don't. I'm also sorting the stuff I'm keeping into (hopefully) a better-organized system of folders.

As in RL, I can only sort for so long in SL before I get bored and frustrated with it, so I'm stopping for now. The temptation is always to go get more stuff, though...

I am putting away my clean laundry (uhhh, finally?) and then I'm going to clean up around my chair, which will involve lots of putting stuff away and not a little throwing stuff away too. I tend to let stuff pile up until there's no room to put anything down anymore before I tidy it. Ugh.

I have a question, though, that you guys might be able to help me with. I have hardwood floors in my apartment. I love hardwood floors, but there is one problem - my furniture moves. The chairs, the stools, the tables (I have very small tables), they all slide around at the slightest touch. Seriously, my cat rubs up against them and they slide. Is there anything I can do about it? I love hardwood floors, but this is very annoying.

So far today I have washed the dishes (after putting away what was dry in the dish rack), finally folded and put away my sheets and towels, also finally put away the rest of those groceries, and put or thrown away a few random things that were laying around.

My living room is very nearly a living room again! All that's left is to put away the clean clothes (oops) and a few other bits and bobs. And take that chair and those boxes down to the garbage. Bah. Maybe I'll just throw them off the balcony into the parking lot (I'm only on the 2nd floor) and then go down and get them. It would be easier than carrying them down the stairs...

I do have the balcony door open, which means the room is even lighter and airier, although it also means the neighbors can look inside if they so desire.

The rest is less well stacked, so I'll have to be more careful moving it.

I'm seeing one of the side effects of clutter that I never paid much attention to before - dust.
Frustration and 27 Things

I talk about little things when I post here - doing dishes, dealing with paperwork, tidying a bookshelf - and don't get me wrong, those are accomplishments and I'm really glad I each and every one of them, but they're not the biggest clutter problem in my apartment.

About 8 months ago, I moved from a decent sized 2-bedroom apartment to a smallish 1-bedroom apartment. I thought I left a lot of stuff behind when I moved, but it turns out it wasn't nearly enough. I have piles and boxes of stuff that I've never unpacked - half of it (I'm sure) is stuff for my jewelry business (which I'm not doing anything with right now, in large part because I couldn't find anything if I wanted it) but the rest...I don't even know what the rest is. It's too overwhelming to try to go through it all. I've been trying to shift it to the bedroom (I set up the "dining room" as my bedroom, since the bedroom is more space than I need and also rather stupidly laid out) but I need to be able to reach the closet and my cat's litter box (and so does he, of course). It's just frustrating and overwhelming. I wish I could ask someone to come help me go through stuff, but my family is too far away and my friends...I don't know, I'm not really comfortable asking my friends that. It just feels weird.

On the up side, I did 27 Thing Fling twice over this evening, including putting away books I finished (so my recently-tidied bookshelves aren't messed up again right away), putting dirty dishes in the sink (must wash dishes tonight! must!), putting dirty clothes in the hamper, and various other random things that were misplaced or needed to be thrown out.
