Debut 2009: Dull Boy

About Dull Boy

Superpowers are awesome -- unless you actually have them, like Avery does. There's only so much he can pass off as "adrenaline" before people start to get suspicious. Probably it's best to lie low, so guys in white lab coats don't come to carry him away, to find out what makes his freakish body tick. Who wants to be vivisected? But flying under the radar becomes a whole lot harder when you can actually fly. It's dangerous to be different, so for now he'll pretend to be normal, unremarkable Avery -- a dull boy -- anything to keep his secret safe.

What he doesn't expect is the horrifying truth about where his powers came from, who else might have them, and the madness of one villain's plan to turn this superpowered dull boy into something even more powerful and amazing.

Very Important Literary Discussion

Okay, so [info]sarahcross and I were having a very important literary discussion about characters who are a part, or are becoming a part, of our modern mythology. But without a system to rank them (like, you know, Zeus and Hera are the bosses, Athena's his daughter, etc., etc..) it's hard to really put them in a modern perspective. So we ask you, oh Debs and Debswatchers:

Who would win in a fight: Batman or Edward Cullen?

***

ETA: Please no spoilers for Breaking Dawn or The Dark Knight, and we're not talking about literary merit. Just who beats whom in a fair fight, given the powers ascribed them in the canon texts.

BIO: Sarah Cross

Name: Sarah Cross

'09 Book Title: DULL BOY

Publisher: Dutton Children's Books (Penguin)

Favorite Books: UNWIND by Neal Shusterman, BOY TOY by Barry Lyga, COMPANIONS OF THE NIGHT by Vivian Vande Velde, RUNAWAYS series by Brian K. Vaughan, GLOOM COOKIE series by Serena Valentino, PARADISE KISS series by Ai Yazawa, UNLEAVING by Jill Paton Walsh, JUST LISTEN by Sarah Dessen, ALEX RIDER series by Anthony Horowitz, GOSSIP GIRL series by Cecily Von Ziegesar, HEAD GAMES by Mariah Fredericks, THE TALE OF GENJI by Murasaki Shikibu, THE ONCE AND FUTURE KING by T.H. White, NOTES FROM UNDERGROUND by Fyodor Dostoevsky, GROWTH OF THE SOIL by Knut Hamsun. Um . . . and about a hundred thousand more.

Favorite Bit of Writing Advice: Be wary of writing advice that is too prescriptive, saying "you MUST do this to be a writer." Different things work for different people.

Also: Hemingway's iceberg theory is not very helpful. At least in my experience. ^.^

Random Info About Me: I love animals--which doesn't keep rampaging groundhogs from trying to kill me. I listen to one song on repeat for hours & hours while I write. I'm a fan of Supernatural, Reaper, Top Chef, The Big Bang Theory, & Friday Night Lights. As a senior I edited my high school's literary mag, & tried to sneak in an anonymous story in which our assistant principal transformed into a tentacle monster & dismembered two amorous students. Alas, I was thwarted. Our batty advisor brought it to the asst. principal for his approval (what was she thinking??), & he demanded to know who submitted it. I NEVER TOLD!!

DULL BOY Synopsis: I don't have an accurate synopsis right now, but I promise to edit this post & add one as soon as I do. For now: DULL BOY is a YA novel about teens with superpowers.
