I was reviewing oreos livejournal to see the kind of people they call "oreos"- and I agree with you that they are not special because they have "diverse" interests. They are isolated because they choose to isolate themselves, they say things like "I don't listen to rap music" in a condescending manner, and they call other black folks "thugs". I also found it amusing that one member said that "she's happy that she's lightskinned, and that she looks like she's mixed with Indian or Mexican so that she wouldn't be confused with them". What a dumbass, others (non-blacks) will see you as black regardless of how "light" you think you are. Then I didn't like the concept behind "sswhite". How are our women actively looking for white men? I mean, if you're saying you're an equal opportunity dater, fine. If you're saying that you happened to end up with a white man and it had more to do with common interests, then that's fine as well. But when you look for white men to the exclusion of black men, then that does bother me that you think you're too good for black men. Do you find your own father to be a failure? Do you find your brother to be a failure? Do you find your son (despite who you choose to procreate with, the child will still be considered black) to be a failure? I just don't like when girls that like to call themselves black treat white men as gods (most of these men are overrated simply because they have white privilege) but they won't even recognize the African royalty among their own. And they can't even use "no-good black men" as an excuse as if all black men are that way (again I use the father-son-brother example here) and not think that white men would treat them the same way that they were treated before if not worse. If they really believe that white men would treat them any better, or if white men are the "cream of the crop" they need to open up a real history book or attend at least one Africana Studies lecture to reconsider 4 comments|post comment

Do We Black Have Our Own Culture? [17 Aug 2006|08:04pm] miyaunna I was in another community, and my sis and I really started talking with other people about whether or not Black Americans have their own culture. Now, maybe I'm retarded, maybe I've been raised in my own mind for the past 21 years, but I could have sworn that black people had their own viable culture in the way that we live our lives. It's not like we're not American, but isn't our culture a subset, like Sicilian American or Irish American? Maybe I'm crazy, but after all these years, there's no such thing as Black/African Amercan culture? Someone please help me if I'm wrong.
