AboutWelcome to the Debt-Proof Living Community!
Debt-Proof Living, or DPL, is a term used by Mary Hunt, author of Debt-Proof Living and founder and editor-in-chief of the Cheapskates Monthy newsletter and CheapskatesMonthy.com. You don’t have to read the book, newsletter, or website to be involved in your own debt-proof living techniques... we aren’t here to "live by the book" by any means... but if you are interested in a good set of resources outside of this community, these would make a great starting point for you!
Before you join, remember that not all debt is bad debt... but if the debt is unsecured, as in the form of credit cards and some monthly installment plans, you can be assured it is not good for you. The idea behind this community is to change our habits, get out of the debt we already have, and maintain a lifestyle that will prevent us from accumulating more debt in the future.
As founder of this community, I simply wanted a place to post my own progress through this journey, something separate from my personal journal but a part of LiveJournal since I enjoy journaling as a hobby. By creating the community, I have also created a forum in which others can participate to whatever extent they choose, from mere observer and occasional commentator to full-blown active debt-proofing!
All are welcome! Our only rules are:
1 - be courteous and respectful to fellow community members, including keeping your posts and replies devoid personal attacks
2 - keep your posts to the community page relevant to management of personal finances, the chief topic of this community
3 - keep references to religion and politics as personally reflective rather than in the form of propaganda, and please respect the political and religious stances of others (see rule 1 ;-)
4 - anonymous posts are discouraged, but if you choose not to have a journal and would like to post, be courteous enough to sign the post with your name at the end
5 - solicitation for home equity loans (HEL) and consolitation loans are not welcome, and potential solicitors who attempt to use this community as a resource for potential clients will be reported to livejournal.com and asked to cease posting (this rule was prompted by this entry">)
