greg and i found this site through an urban exploration website. it's a quaint little cemetery in the middle of nowhere. all of the graves date from the 1800's, it had a very new england type feel to it. most of the graves in the ground were reclaimed by the earth.
we paid our respects to the dead, photographed what was left, and went on our way.

I spent last week doing fieldwork out of Darling Marine Center, near Damariscotta, Maine. There are a number of trails around the campus, one of which is called Cemetery Trail. It leads to a small cemetery in the forest surrounded by a stone wall with about 20 headstones, all of which bear the family name "Wentworth". The headstones are dated in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

St. Mary's and Allegheny Cemeteries - statues and others

As with the angels, a cemetery always seems empty without it's share of statues. The two cemeteries from this exploration had many beautiful statues, and there are just a few of them.

I've always loved how different types of stone vary in their durability... some stones show their age easily, while others, like the above, look far newer than their dates would suggest (Albert Glockner died in 1879, and his wife, Maria, followed in 1885).

Once upon a time the letters on this set of steps were made of more than discolored stone, now all that is left are the holes that held them in.

This is the extent of my current photo-exploration of these two cemeteries... there will be much more of these in the future, though.

I hope everyone enjoyed them! As always, comments on any of my photos is welcome, and appreciated.

St. Mary's and Allegheny Cemeteries - angels

Angels... big or small, old or new, they are a staple in almost every cemetery.

The above is one of two bronze angels in the Allegheny Cemetery. We found the other on our first camera-less drive through the cemetery, but I couldn't remember it's location, so it will have to wait for another trip.

My next post from this series focuses on a few of the many mausoleums in the St. Mary's and Allegheny Cemeteries in Pittsburgh. These are some of the more decayed ones, though by far not all, and the majority in the two cemeteries are in immaculate condition, so while they are beautiful, they most likely will never be seen here in my posts.

As seen in the detail photo of the doorway, this beautiful mausoleum boasts an impressive, though not indestructible, solid marble entrance. I wonder what filled the crest-shaped recession above the door.

Behind this mausoleum is the former St. Francis Hospital... it was closed in 2002 and is being renovated to house a new children's hospital.

I love the trees and grasses growing out of the cracks in the roof on the above mausoleum. Such a beautiful contrast to the crumbling stones.

And one last mausoleum for the set, though not really decayed...

... there is a small herd of deer that call the Allegheny Cemetery their home. On our first drive through (in which I had forgotten my camera), we saw 7 of them grazing. When we went back, we only saw two of them, though I am sure the others were around somewhere.

I meant to post these yesterday but forgot, so here they are today... photos from a very unusual mausoleum in Pittsburgh, PA. It took some searching online, but I finally found a bit of information about this one. It is the resting place of Emil Winter, who was, among other things, one of the founders of the Pittsburgh Steel Company. More info on him can be found here.

There are three ornate stained glass windows, this is the one on the back wall of the mausoleum. The other two were incapable of being photographed since they were on the side walls, which were quite obscured by the metalwork of the entrance.

I have many more photos to come yet... I will only be posting a handful per post so there will be several days of viewing yet to come.

St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery; Donnelly Mausoleum

There are two large cemeteries right next to each other in Pittsburgh. Today we explored small portions of each, the 5 photos in this post are from only one mausoleum in the first cemetery we went into.

The iron gates weren't padlocked like so many other local mausolea are, and upon opening one to get a better look through the glass door, I noticed a very unusual sight...

... there were massive amounts of debris covering the floor. There was no way the glass door could be opened with the debris covering the floor (it opens to the inside), so I can only assume this was some sort of internal roof collapsing.

One of the two stained glass windows was in very poor shape, most of it smashed and missing. (Sorry for the glare/haze, the glass doors were quite filthy.)

Backing away from the doorway, I noticed a little violet nestled in a crack in the stones.

Next post... an Egyptian Mausoleum in a Pittsburgh? Yes, there certainly is one.

Consecrated in 1898, Toronto's Mount Hope Catholic Cemetery is the final resting place of more than 76,000 men, women, and children.

Awed by the profusion of elaborately carved markers, I tried my best-- despite the blazing afternoon sun-- to capture a few on film. Most of these pictures were snapped blindly, as the glare on my crap camera was *most* unholy (Guess that's what I get for being a baptised Lutheran in this place!)
