Q Who is the girl at the end?
A She's only a worshipper of Kira. It's not Misa.(Ooba)
There was no particular motif, she was drawn based on my own impressions. (Obata)

Q Why didn't Misa appear at the end?

She loves Light, and users of the Death Note end up miserable. Matsuda probably let it slip that Light died, so I believe she fell into despair and committed suicide.

Below are snippets from Ooba's interview. Some of the nuances are a bit different, though.

・Ooba thought of the tagline at the end of "Maku" [chapter 107] herself.
・Mello's death was done badly on purpose to hide the truth.
・Light considered Misa evil because she killed people.
・Ooba wanted to write about the harshness of reality, rather than human drama in Death Note.
・The speedy plot was possible because she avoided writing about the human drama aspects.
・There is no particular theme to the series; If you had to pick one, it'd be "Humans all die someday. Once dead, they can never be ressurected."
・She didn't want to write about good or evil, and considered it unimportant.
・"Light was very evil", "L was also somewhat evil", "Only Souichirou was justice"

I don't speak or read Japanese at all but I copied and pasted the text into a online translator. It's not very well translated, but still makes sense...sort of:

The true colors of female believer who appears at the end?
There was especially no motif, and it drew by the image priority ..no
one person Mass of ..A.. believer who worshiped Kira to the end (Oba)
it to have.. (Obata).

The reason why Q Mass doesn't appear in the final times?
It is because it was not possible to draw in A situation.
It is thought that it has leaked it, despairs (Oba).

- A part of edge case

155 Nia CM
171 Mero CM

It suitably excerpts it from the Oba interview hereafter. Though it is thought that
the nuance has changed slightly

・It is Oba to think about the last fuel sentence of "Act".
・The death of Mero is because it dares to turn down the real intention.
・The moon was recognized to the Mass, "It is a bad man because it killed the person".

・Deepening the man drama in "DEATHNOTE" wanted to draw the severity of the reality.
・"It drew and it is likely to be able ..man drama.. ..S Pee Dee.. to have developed. "

・The theme of the work is "The person doesn't revive when he or she dies ..the death
some time without fail... " if it enumerates it forcedly as not being especially
・The good and evil theory is not thought to be important not wanting draw.
・In "The moon is terrible and bad", "Some L is also bad", and "Only Soichiro is a justice"

What I can garner from the first one:

Q: "Who was the identity of the female devotee who appeared at the end?"
A: "A devotee who worshipped Kira to the last - not Misa." (Ooba)
"There was no particular motif, it was drawn to my image preference*." (Obata)

I gave it a try... the key points from the Q/A part are basically:

* Misa is NOT the girl worshipping Kira at the end of the manga.
* Misa did not appear at the end because she had slipped into sorrow and may have committed suicide.

Light to me is a very black-and-white, good-and-evil, all-or-nothing thinker and personality. I can see him thinking Misa was evil because she killed people-- but Light figured he was good because he was ridding the world of those he considered evil, not just "killing people".

I'm in agreement with you about L. His looks, mannerisms and speech quirks are endearing but he often was seriously cold-blooded and lacking in empathy.

Strange as this might sound, I think Near is probably the least "evil" of the Three Wise Men (*chuckle*), if the term can be applied so loosely (since Ohba makes it clear that this story is not so much about making any sort of delineation between Good and Evil, but instead about existing realities and the 'truth,' as it were, about the humyn condition).

Mello, very cleary, was willing to become Kira to beat Kira, and that takes him out of the running for being any sort of substantively "good" character.

And L, toward the end of his life, became increasingly withdrawn and even (facetiously) remarked once or twice that it would be okay to let someone die (ends justify the means and all that), or that they would need to "test" the Death Note to make sure that it was real (am I remembering this correctly? was that Near? If so, then this theory is doopie and I should shut up now). This can be accredited (likely) to his desperation to flush out the killer, and perhaps the instinctive knowledge that his death is imminent, encroaching, but his resolve to be The Good Guy slowly begins to crumble near the end of his life. (As far as his --ostentatiously--rude personality quirks go...I think that's more something biological than it was a conscious intent to be crass or flippant. Latent, inverted sociopathy, perhaps, or a form of Autism, which was probably not intentional, but nonetheless marvelously feasible. So, said quirks don't necessarily count against his Good-o-Meter.)

As for Near...Near is Pure Objectivism. He's a seriously F*cked Up Child-Gone-Horribly-Wrong, and he's definitely verbally cruel, and yes, his wit is certainly caustic and severe...but he never at any point is willing to do something definitively *evil.* He's a (loveable! adorable!) prick, but he's done nothing to qualify him in any capacity as Evil. He's the 'neutral' character, in my book. The unbiased third party who stands behind and assesses, and only makes decisions based upon logic and reason, though with highly emotionally-charged goals in mind.

If that even makes sense.

Where L is Purity/Innocence gradually chipped away, Mello is Passion Misdirected, and Near...well, Near is Static, Determined Objectivism.

I love them all.

And frankly, I hadn't actually thought of L in terms of 'evil' before Ohba said it, either.

But...but, yeah.

She's so f*cking amazing.

That is all.

I'm also glad she gave the Justice Baton exclusively to Soichirou.

About mid-way through the series (just shortly before L died *sob*), it occurred to me that he was the diametric opposite of his son, the juxtaposed image of the Meglomaniacal Mass-Murderer (with "good" intent), and the Ultimate Archetype of the Unflappably Good Guy.

The Jesus (pronounced Hey-Seuss, so as not to offend anyone) to Light's Kira (hee--Kira was ACTUALLY the devil in Angel Sanctuary *dies of beautiful way that Universe is somehow magically All Linked Together*), if you will.

I'm glad she officially recognized that.

It's incredible the way that she gave us the two opposites so starkly like she did (there was no grey area with either of them; it was all-or nothing for them both, as moonjaguar pointed out already in Light's case), with such prominent characters in the story, and in the form of Father and Son, even.

Yay, Ohba-sama!

AND.

(yes, there's more. i'm obnoxious. live with it. ^_^)

Girdles.

Additionally.

I'm also happy she addressed Mello's death, and the Aftermath of Misa. I had figured (kinda) that something along those lines was true in each respective situation, but you know...now I KNOW.

...does anyone know if we're given any insight into any of the characters' ("any" meaning L, Light, Near, and/or Mello) hystories?

Yes?

No?

But I'd much rather read L trying to 'figure out' (sleep with) Light's Method o' Death (Explodey Mind Sex), with much Clever Banter and Word(fore)play.

Something tells me L'd object less to trying out the Death Note if it meant Butt-Secks with Light.

Ohba Sucks

she's a bad writter. end of story. she was shrooming. I remember in an interview that she regretted killing L in the way she did cause it screwed up the story too much. So she just screws it up more. LISTEN TO THE FANS PEOPLE!! Thats what you must do when you write. I figured it was because she was pressed to finish on time and she just said fuck it, but her excuses seal it. she's a terrible writter. I don't pay attention to terrible writters, I make up my own endings for personal satisfaction--everything happened as planned, but in more detail I find satsifaction in the theory that kira is in hell, and L, mello and matt are there too. So I can only imagine the eternal fun they'll have. you can tell she was pressed because all the little chit chat in the end chapter had all the best parts in it.

her biggest problem is, its all talking. thats great in the short run, but for 110 chapters its bad, especially when you TALK about action and obvious action scenes just ready to pop, and nothing happens. they just talk...talk and stand still. no one does anything. no twists, no turns, no interesting plots. I counted in my head three possible options that could have worked out very reasonably! THREE!! the only kinda interesting ending was that matsuda went ape shit. but mikami being killed by near--that was something we needed to see! more on mello's past and stuff he did to get where he was would have been nice too, he was an emotional and in-depth, very important character, perhaps the secondary force in the second season, and she threw him aside.

No one was explained. It was all talking. A story this long NEEDS action and emotion and drama and plot twists and sex and violence and mayhem. clean and simple, that fucking c^%$ was a terrible, horrendous writter. She wasted Oobata's time and talent! The art was what most of us thrived on two, without him, no one would have really payed attention this long. She spead through everything interesting and locked her claws down on the boring and irrelevant. PLAIN AND SIMPLE. Those excuses are bullshit. I hate misa, but that should have been her at the end. I mean, even saying that she commit suicide is too important to leave to an interview!

Can you tell I've been planning this? It doesn't take much for me to answer whats wrong with DeathNote. I mean, in the first season, the most awesome plot was the handcuff and the humor between l and light, and misa's personal issues. she started out great. The one way I've always made stories is to plan the ending FIRST, or somewhere where you know how its going to end. You need time and second opinion.

Shit. Thats all this was--shit. and I'm not even gonna get how to read 13, cause it will be shit too. I rely on my own story, corpse flower, that has my personal indentations that make me feel better (plus lots of hot graphic sex as extras ^^) with love, lust, violence, flashback, info, action, emotion and drama. its my way of coping--but it still pains me.

this comment was much longer than I intended it. sorry.

you know i am hoping the anime writers/producers will be able to notice some of Ohba's/the mangas shortcomings and try to fill in for those in this anime adaptation. not exactly deviate from the story, but to add in all those blanks. like the drama part Ohba says she (is it really a she?) left out cos she thought it was unnecessary, i think this actually will be key and i hope the anime will play it up without overdoing it. it would then make it one very fantastic piece of anime.

Woah, I didn't quite realise that this manga wasn't really aimed at good/evil because that's what a lot of people thought and wrote about when they reviewed DN. 0_0

But yeah, the girl at the end couldn't be Misa since Misa looks different. It would make sense if she committed suicide though.

I'm glad that Souichiroh was the only justice one. ^0^ He's such a great person.

I agree with L being a little evil but... *whistles* >_> it's CUTE evil!! XDDD

The mentioning of Mello and L in the very last volume of DN when Near was explaining about how he busted Light was really good. ^0^ Making Mello's death really quick was a good idea since I was quite awed by the effect it made when Near mentioned it again. *loves of "cameos" of L and Mello*
