If anyone can make a difference, it's Gackt...

Thanks to [info]gakuhai for the link to the story, but I couldn't comment on it there so...

The first three sentences of the article (I can only read the Japanese not the Korean down below!) talk about how he arrived in Korea on the 17th, has released "Love Letter - for Korean Dears" for his Korean fans (with seven songs from Love Letter rerecorded in Korean), and that he had a fan meeting to promote the album.

I translated the fourth paragraph because I wanted everyone to hear his words:

On the afternoon of June 18, at 12:30 p.m., in a union news interview at the University Shin Sennen (New Millenium) Hall before the fan meeting, Gackt, who regards himself as a pacifist, expressed his hope, "The people of the two nations are geographically close, but the reality that the people feel mentally/psychologically distant is sad.  We must search for a way to get along.  I am thinking that I want to become that opportunity."

I think it's great that Gackt can use his music to reach across borders and unite the people of nations whose enmity has run so deep over the years.  He can really make a difference...

Wow! It's so beautiful that he wants to do that, with his music. :D I can't come up with good enough words to express how thoughtful that is of him.

That right there makes me respect and love him even more than I do already just by those words and hope. I do hope the distance between Asian countries do collapse and everyone can be united as one and Gackt can help with that! :)

I would beg to differ with you. Music is a powerful form of communication in addition to being an art form and I am sure that if he sets his mind to it, which it sounds like he is, he could influence the younger generations to make a start on stopping the hate so to speak.

Yeah, it's really awesome! And I personally think Gackt has already achieved something and is just getting started. For him it really is about the music; if he can get some Korean kids to listen to his music and see him as an artist rather than as a "Japanese artist", I think he will have succeeded in breaking down some of those cultural barriers. Politics is a whole different realm, and no, I haven't heard him talk politics. He can only do so much as a musician, but he is going all out in terms of what he can do. And for that, my respect for him and my belief in him knows no bounds. ^^

I can understand your hesitancy, and please be assured that he loves Korea. Don't know if you read Gackt's autobiography Jihaku, but in there he talks about how he would like to consider himself Asian above all. Even though he is extremely proud of being Japanese, he hopes that all Asians can come together as one people. He has felt that way for a long time. He has been learning Korean for a long time because he wants to be able to communicate with his Korean fans when he visits. Same with Chinese.

Sounds stupid and judgemental I know.

No it's not stupid! I'm Japanese so I know all about the tensions...

I completely agree. I live in the US; the only access I have to Gackt is his music and when I see him on TV, both via the internet. I don't live remotely close to Asia.

I might never see him in person, and he inspires me so much I can't even describe it. Gackt makes me want to do better at everything I do, music, school, hell, even life! He makes me want to be a better person.

I think it's amazing that a person like him even exists.

A social consious is a wonderful thing to have, and I feel so...privillaged...or maybe proud (or both!) that I'm a fan and get to watch him as he works hard to achieve his goals. Ganbatte Gakkun. =)

Ahh... if only more people would think like that.
And not just in Asia, either.
There is so much tension in my own country, small though we are, that it makes me feel sick sometimes. ;_;

Maybe I should do the same as he.
Of course, I'd have to become a wildly popular/talented/famous/brilliant singer/songwriter/musician/actor/whatnot first. ^^;;

That's wonderful. It's fantastic when you can see that your favorite artist is not just some shallow, vain, power-hungry pop star, but a person who actually wants to make a difference and will truly set his mind on doing something about the problem he wants to conquer.

I really admire him for wanting to use his popularity for a good cause. Apparently he said something along the lines of 「いつか両国がAsiaで一緒に歩ける日が来る」 the day before, too. It's good to see the cultural exchange that's going on between Japan & Korea lately. I think that it really can make a difference to the political climate.
