The numbers are in... and they aren't good
Supernatural on the CW (Viewers: #5, 2.27 million; A18-49: #5, 1.0/ 2)

That's a series low for us.

Ofcourse this does not take into account that in the Chicago market it didn't air until 12 FREAKING 30!

GRRR.

xasterisk[info]xasterisk on April 25th, 2008 04:19 pm (UTC)
I don't think they add the people who watched it outside of the 9 PM hour to the final totals... but I could be wrong. This blows serious chunks.

omg... that's a horrible rating O.O
xasterisk[info]xasterisk on April 25th, 2008 04:19 pm (UTC)
Seriously. We were picking up speed before the hiatus, too.
Misty[info]misty_writes on April 25th, 2008 04:08 pm (UTC)
I'm not surprised. I loved the episode, but I think new viewers who might have tuned in for the first time would not understand what was going on and would have turned it off. I know I would have if that was the first episode I ever saw of SPN.
xasterisk[info]xasterisk on April 25th, 2008 04:22 pm (UTC)
I think it's safe to say that I would have, too. Newer viewers probably thought that the CW stuck in another show in place of SPN.

That's what you get for taking us off the air entirely for a month.

Yuck. Good thing it's already picked up for S4.

SUCK.

And yet again, I boggle at the fact that almost two million people watch Smallville and then change the channel when SPN comes on.

I'm so glad we've already got season 4; otherwise I'd be a nervous wreck about right now.
xasterisk[info]xasterisk on April 25th, 2008 04:39 pm (UTC)
That's why I personally think that the lead-in theory is crap. People watch what they like and stick to what they like. They'll only tune in for their shows and then change the channel once it's over.

Boo hoo! I guess people wanted to see some angst
xasterisk[info]xasterisk on April 25th, 2008 04:32 pm (UTC)
From the tiny line I read about next week, they'll definitely get that soon enough. Although, have angsty episodes done well? I seem to recall that BUABS and AHBL2 were season lows.

Nik[info]painwithoutlove on April 25th, 2008 04:24 pm (UTC)
I'd say that's because some area's had it delayed till SO late. I get SPN on two channels at different hours. One didn't even air it until 1:30am.
xasterisk[info]xasterisk on April 25th, 2008 04:36 pm (UTC)
Unfortunately, I don't think that those numbers count toward the final totals.
oc_pixie[info]oc_pixie on April 25th, 2008 04:28 pm (UTC)
Wow...that is low....but they did have to deal with the return of Grey's Anatomy AND many cities not getting theirs because of sports.

Eiter way it sucks....but the CW can't retract their renewal right?
xasterisk[info]xasterisk on April 25th, 2008 04:35 pm (UTC)
I hope they don't because they need good shows to survive as a network and we need syndication.

Dark Angel was picked up for a third season and then it got cancelled unexpectedly. *knock on wood*

Man, I thought this episode was one a new viewer could watch because it didn't have much to do with the main storyline. Like he or she could get into easily because it's like a hilarious take on other ghost shows out there. ...Unless some people now think Supernatural is seriously like Ghostfacers, then that might have turned the show off for them forever. That's possible. Some new people may have flipped through a TV Guide and caught sight of an ad but tuned out right away because they don't realize that this episode was supposed to be, well, stupid and cheesy.

Unfortunately this wasn't the only show returning - we were up again both Lost and Grey's, and honestly? I never thought this particular episode would draw big crowds.
xasterisk[info]xasterisk on April 25th, 2008 05:30 pm (UTC)
Lost and Grey's are on the same network, and so we were up against CSI and Grey's instead. Lost airs at 10 PM now.

I'm not surprised. I love the show, and I wished that I'd never watched that episode. I can't imagine many non rabid fans liking it.
xasterisk[info]xasterisk on April 25th, 2008 05:35 pm (UTC)
It seems to be one of those things you can't help. They couldn't scrap an almost finished, pre-strike script to write a whole new one when they could spend time filming and have maybe fifteen episodes for this season instead of sixteen. On the flip side of things, they shouldn't have ended such a long hiatus with a comedic standalone.

Shows usually have low ratings after a hiatus. We'll pick up more viewers next week.
[info]dokunokasumi on April 25th, 2008 05:34 pm (UTC)
It was that opener.

>.<

When they scrambled out Supernatural for Ed and Harry.

It was like "Minds Eye Theater" or something!

Gruh.

And didn't help they waited until the END of the show to roll the credits.

=(

I pray next week will be better.

cult episodes are always the ones that don't "sell" well. I think the episode is unique and special and I'm glad it was made, however the ratings look.
the ricky the bartender fanatic.: spn: THE HUG (AHBL2)[info]vorrothiel on April 25th, 2008 06:12 pm (UTC)
People always mention "new viewers" but really, I think the majority of Supernatural viewers are NOT new viewers. I know I wouldn't start watching a show right in the middle of a season. Supernatural has had a constant 3 million viewers on average per season (used to be much higher in season 1 when it was in a Tuesday time slot). I don't think SPN is going to attract hundreds of thousands of new viewers for just one episode. :/
xasterisk[info]xasterisk on April 25th, 2008 07:04 pm (UTC)
A lot of things seemed to be going against this episode. Delays, irritating camera work, storyline and its placement in the final four episodes of the season. While new viewers are not the blame entirely, some may have tuned in out of curiosity and assumed that Supernatural is how Ghostfacers was shot and written. Mostly, this was just not the episode to end hiatus.

My mom, who became a fan mid season 3, walked out halfway through the episode. She did not like it at all and did not get it. She has never done that.

I am a series long fan and even I wasn't into that epi much. I think fans, new and old, may have tuned out.
partaymon5[info]partaymon5 on April 25th, 2008 07:04 pm (UTC)
I'd agree that it wasn't a great episode after a long hiatus for sure. I watched my recorded version all the way through when I came home from work. Then turned on the version that comes on at midnight....I didn't watch that one all the way through, because it just didn't hold my attention. After something like Jus in Belo and the fact that they took it off the air for so long, I think they just lost momentum. People were watching other shows especially because they knew this one didn't have anything to do with the myth arch,so they wouldn't be missing something important. I think the preview for next week will bring them back though.

S'okay. It's down all over the board. Just a few episodes before yet another hiatus isn't going to pull in loads of viewers, and we still have 22 eps for next year.

*GRINS*
